TheChargingRhino reacted to MindWanderer in Nintendo Switch
It's what the majority of the rumors were suggesting.  Some thing I noticed:
Games on display included Zelda: Breath of the Wild (which we knew), Mario, Mario Kart, Splatoon, Skyrim (big surprise), and an NBA game.  Splatoon is the one I'm most curious about, since it seemed pretty clear that there wouldn't be dual-screen functionality, which means changes to Inkstrike and Super Jump.  If it's a launch title, that means less than 2 years between Splatoon 1 and 2, which to be fair isn't unusual for competitive shooters.  That's a pretty short time for Mario Kart 8 to be supplanted, too, although that one could be a simple port. The two "Joy-Con" sticks analog and face-button placement are almost identical, but not quite.  If a second player uses one of them, they'll find that the joystick and buttons are slightly further down.  Probably not a huge deal, since they'll probably center their grip on the joystick, and the distance between joystick and buttons is the same.  The other keys (+ and -, Home and some grey thing, and the shoulder and trigger buttons) aren't reflected at all. This could be pretty annoying for anyone who keeps their game consoles in a cabinet.  You could probably leave the unit in the dock and keep the controllers outside, but how long will a charge on the controllers last? The blurb mentions "local multiplayer" with multiple units, suggesting ad-hoc wi-fi LAN capability.  That's pretty big. In what looks like an editing error, you can see the side of the dock, with -two- HDMI ports, neither of which seems to be hooked up to the TV the guy is playing on.  If one of those is an HDMI-in (pass-through), Nintendo could be trying to make a multimedia hub like the Xbox One.  Or it could be a second HDMI out, allowing for multiplayer on two independent big screens.  I'd bank on the former, though. In other screenshots, you can see the right side, and there are no ports there, so presumably the AC is back there.  No idea on other ports, like USB.  I'm really hoping for either ethernet, or USB so I can use an ethernet adapter.  Wi-fi in my house sucks. Since it has motion controls, it should be able to play Wii games (probably on Virtual Console), although there's nothing like a B button on the second controller.  I can't see any way it could be used to play Wii U games, unless you could get an adapter to allow you to use the Switch itself and the Hub at the same time, or a separate controller with a screen. That game cartridge is pretty tiny.  I know you can store a lot on flash media these days, but I have a feeling a lot of game content will have to be downloaded and will live in internal memory. Was that an intentional knock on the iPhone 7, showing very clearly that the Switch has a headphone jack?

Japanese RPG designers definitely took a lot of inspiration from early Ultimas & Wizardrys, those games were big hits over there. It's interesting (the Wikipedia article says) that the Famicom/NES version was tweaked quite a bit in gameplay, and also the music is new. I'm not a huge Ultima buff, I've played Ultima IV maybe halfway through on the PC. Still I feel like trying out the NES version of this game, just to see how much it differs from the western Ultima experience (that I'm no expert of). It might be an interesting link between early western RPGs and JRPGs.

The high pitched instrument hurts my ears tbh. Maybe make it slightly less high pitch, then it would sound much better.

I'm really enjoying this. I think the section after 1:47 would benefit from additional sound effects thrown in occasionally. It would also be good to change it up slightly somewhere around 2:15 to keep things interesting. Maybe you could swap the high and low voices, swap their parts? I'd love to hear where you take the song from here.

Also that beat for the chemistry thing was pretty clean tbh, and being someone who likes chemistry that was entertaining, haha.

Hmm, I've always wanted to try producing a rap beat, so maybe if you make some fire lyrics we could put something together
(BTW here's an example of a rap beat I've made before even if its purpose is a bit cheesy, but if I could put produce something more legit and put some rap-style piano thing like this behind it and just edit it a bit, this could be pretty dope. Would you be interested?)

Maybe I'm feeling inspired by Matt Houston's beat, but I want to try my hands at a rap remix of the Sauria level from Assault.
I'm no [good] producer though, so my claim is pretty tentative honestly.

both the MS store credit and the game are gone.
i am, however, continuing to debate selling my music workstation. it's an older i7 (8 cores @3ghz) and 16gb DDR3 ram, with a couple TB of storage and a discrete graphics card for multi-monitor setups, in a really over-large rackmount case. it still handles large projects pretty easily, thanks to the huge amount of cores and the excellent i7 architecture, but would get blow up by any current i7 on the market. i could sell it within driving distance of rochester ny for probably 400$ OBO, or shipped for 50-100 more (i'd need a new case for it) plus shipping, likely around 30-40$ for a system of this size. i'd be amenable to trades as well, since it's just taking up space and i don't have any sunken investment in it.
it is, however, way more computer than you could ever get for 400ish$, so if you're interested, let me know and we can talk it out.
edit: forgot to mention that this is basically a perfect slave machine if you want to get into that kind of setup. tons of cpu power, no fancy extra crap.

As someone who suffered multiple wrist injuries in my youth from having bad teachers to my own ignorance I implore you to not do anything that fatigues your hand quickly or feels awkward for long periods of time.  If you feel any pain in any joint in your hand, stop and reevaluate what you are doing.
Regarding the mechanics of the wrist, your fingers are capable of the greatest range of motion and mechanical advantage if your wrist is in a neutral position. A lot of bad habits form with players hyper extending or hyper flexing their wrist in order to play certain chords and this KILLS the tendons in the hand.  If you flex your wrist while you play you tighten the tendons on the underside of the forearm and the finger movement brings them into repeated contact with bone and other tendons. It will take some time but eventually you'll have an overuse injury like this person will
    .
Keep your wrist in a good neutral position and you'll find that 80% of those chords are much easier to play.  For some chords you'll probably end up bending the wrist slightly but under no circumstances should it look like the picture above.  Here is a picture of pretty good wrist positioning.

One final note.  Try to not allow the joints in your fingers to "bust" or bend inward.  There should, for the most part, be a slight curve in the last 2 digits of your fretting fingers. If a joint bends inwards and has a concave look to it you are not stressing muscle anymore but ligaments.  Muscle recovers far faster than ligaments do and with less pain so keep an eye on that.  The most usual exceptions to this are barre chords and power chords that incorporate the octave.
    Good luck playing!

Something I tell my students is to remember to keep your fingers arched, and to practice pressing the strings with different parts of the finger.
What a lot of new players tend to do is overcompensate and play with the very top of their finger right under their nail, because they don't want to hit the string above it. However, this ends up leaving the fleshy part of your finger laying all over the strings underneath.
Moving your elbow to rotate your hand can help with some chords as well.

@Cole Train@DS394, this track is claimed. I've heard the examples, and I'm very curious to see what you guys come up with!
7 tracks, we're off to a good start!
I'm starting to get a little clarity on where I want the concept to go, so I'll be hammering out a set tracklist for the two discs later this week. Stay tuned!

You are in the Purple Rain now, DS.
I have added 'current performers' to the top of the thread under staff. Anyone else who is interested, let me know.
I've also put myself down for Titania. from Star Fox SNES. It's a weird one and no idea what I'm going to come up with, but a drumbeat and some deep, dark, dirty, distorted guitar has been running around in my head for a while now...
