  1. A better way than following a step by step guide to making a shitty cookie-cutter master is to actually learn what every method used to master a song does. That way you'll know what you want your song to sound like, and know exactly the tools to make it sound that way. But I'm just an asshole.

Agreed. Which is why I don't think a few tutorials are sufficient to cover this topic (although they do contribute). This is where the book recommendations and concept/theory discussions come in.

  2. I like the randomness that we're getting in the intros. It's sort of a hook. I'm always looking forward to hearing what weird thing is gonna happen after the "... djpretzel said:" line.

And wingless is doing a heck of a job co-hosting the show, too. VGDJ now has Soul +1.

  3. I know we've already got a daunting collection of stickied threads in this forum, but I think if there's any other topic that needs a sticky, it's production. The problem with the art of production is that it's an art that takes many years to truly master. As one of many upstart musicians who lack experience in this field, I say this forum needs a database of production knowledge.

What we need are links to training resources. We need book recommendations, tutorials, and other forms of study media. People can ask questions about concepts, hardware, genre-specific tips and other related issues.

Mastery of this skill is a long-term commitment, but with a thread like this, we can at least help to accelerate that process.

  4. Sooooo ...

I've spent the last tweek trying to catch up on all the VGDJ shows I had fallen behind on over the last few months and um ... I'm starting to run out of shows ...

    .... yeeeeeeaaahhhhh ....

Please don't die, VGDJ. You wouldn't want my life to get boring, would you?

  5. I'll have a few files up later. Granted they may not be the final mastered versions of my remixes, but they'll be the basic package.

This "song files as tutorials" idea needs to be taken to the next level. I recall a year or so ago when Prot was trying to create a whole website where OCR folk could post their remix song files. I was rather disappointed that it never really took off.

This thread at least needs to be sticked or something.

  6. I've never managed to find an orchestral percussion kit that quite manages the sound I'm looking for. I love listening to the percussion in scores by Harry Gregson-William, Steve Jablonsky, Klaus Badelt ... pretty much any composer who fits in the "Hans Zimmer"-style catagory. The driving bass drums/taikos/timpanis/etc are the real appeal to me (although the supplementary sticks/cymbals/electronic/etc sounds are great as well).

Does anyone know of a sample kit or something that provides this sort of sound?

    http://www.sephfire.com/sector6.mp3

Here's a sample from Steve Jablonsky's work for "The Island." Note ...

    -the snare-like hits around 0:18

-the beat the kicks in at 1:47

These are the kinds of sounds I've tried hardest to emulate but had little luck with. Any suggestions?

  7. Just wanted to come in and say I'd be happy to help out musically in any way I can (for what it's worth). If anyone wants/needs and hand with some particular thing about their track or if remixers suddenly start dropping like flies, send me a PM or something. I don't expect to be needed for anything given the high-calibur crew TO has assembled, but I figured I'd put it out there.

Looking forward to hearing your work guys. :)
