  1. Well, let's ask the question first of all - with the right amount of attention, CAN this be an OC Remix?

Well, for what it is we have a nice interpretive version of the source; doesn't seem to go anywhere aside from working a lot around the organ riff of the original, but if there's going to be future revisions it'll be a good idea to keep exploring and going for more of its development.

However, let me bring in some pointers for future musical endeavours. I've kept a good eye on your music since the B4C2 last summer and I can see some potential if you know where to improve yourself. Here's a start:

    - I've studied the waveform and it looks really quiet in comparison to other similar sounding tracks. You've got the right idea with the drum compression, but if you have a wave editor then you can be able to normalise the exported waveform to give it more presence. Bringing it up to around -0.1dB is a good start without sacrificing any loss of audio quality.

    - I understand where you're going with the drum writing and the synth selection, but I feel the grooves and the choice of soundfont don't match. You've got four-on-the-floor kicks most of the way plus some nice rolling hihats and breaks that just don't seem to work with the acoustic sound - it would benefit more from going for a more electronic-based groove, similar to what we usually expect from halc's stuff. If you have a VST that can handle sampling, then exploring what Wave Alchemy provides can be a good start. You can also try Maschine Drum Selection if you're a Kontakt user as well. If in doubt, consult the Music Composition & Production area for any further advice.

    - In addition, the mixing feels very muddy. Getting around to EQing tracks can be problematic for those starting out for the first time, but once you understand the basics you'd get to understand it more. Let me link you to this chart:

There's some tips there in order to suggest how to cut or boost your instruments for whatever kind of effect you're looking for. But it's usually best to focus more on the effect you want, and then after that start cutting out the unwanted frequencies, i.e. the notes that the instruments aren't playing.

So for example, that bell that plays the melody at 0:59 generally plays a note range between F5 and F6. You're most likely going to get your effect presence in the higher register, so a high-pass at around 675k would be a good start. Provided you're able to compare this with the piano roll of what workstation you're doing, you'd be able to make those unwanted cuts and see what kind of presence your instruments are looking for. Drums can be cut in a similar way, but the cut frequences also depends on the general timbre of the drum piece as well.

I hope these will help you on your way nevertheless. It's not too bad, but it's still a long way off from being an OCR mixpost; however, just keep making music and I can see you getting further ahead in due course. :)

  2. I'm kind of taking a shot in the dark for this, but I'm looking for help in filling in the last 4 spots of my Vivillon collection.

I'm missing Icy Plains, Jungle, River and Sandstorm; what I can offer in return is an Elegant, Continental, Monsoon, Polar, Sun and Archipelago as well as raising my native pattern of Garden.

Let me know if you're up for giving me a hand :)

  3. If you want my take on this Twiggy, then yes, I can understand where those who don't quite seem as polished don't have anywhere to go to show off their music if they want to aim for OCR in the first place. And we have people around the forums that have been trying to get onto the site but heavily struggling. Heck, a lot of musicians that got posted on OCR within the past few years have been down there at the beginning.

My advice to you is to just start working on whatever music you'd love to do. Maybe sign up on Soundcloud; use it to host some work on there when you get it done, or just use it as your own musical sketchpad in a way.

Or if you want to work on something specific, OCR's Competitions Area is a good starting point too - PRC and MnP are always looking for new faces.

Other than that, there's Newgrounds and Youtube being your most likely bet to share music. But that's the point though - SHARE music. Some of the most popular crap on both sites are driven purely by nostalgia or fanboyism, and if that's your aim then it's probably not for you.

But yes, there's always a lot of options out there to share music that you've done, regardless if they're going to pass the panel or not.

  4. I dunno. We've had so many bow-out rounds thus far that it'd be a shame to have it happen at the very end like that. I like this decision, especially since it means YET MORE great music. I don't see how this is a bad thing.

The way I saw it as a bad thing is more in regards to fairplay - making sure everyone works hard on equal footing and abiding by the rules.

But come to think of it, the Sonic Bracket in particular never had a full roster chip in at this point. It's taken me a while to just absorb this, but I can see where this is coming from.

I had a talk about this privately with Matt on Facebook (sorry for not finishing earlier, the chat box just BROKE); and having understood his situation much clearer, it's one that I will at least comprehend.

  5. Hmmm, it looks like a lot less people voted this round, unless everyone is waiting for the last minute  I'm in a bit of a dilemma, because between my work schedule and family commitments next week, I'm legitimately worried about my ability to make a track. I've talked to Amphibious about possibly moving on regardless of how voting ends, because I don't want the Sonic Bracket to go out with a whimper. But we'll see how things go this last hour and then I gotta make a decision.

I understand, but you won that matchup fair and square; there's no reason for you to just back away now even if there are other commitments involved.

And even if you do give Amphibious a free pass, what happens then? If he becomes the champion again, then because of you bowing out that'll rob a fair contest win out of Wildfire or whoever's left in the Robotnik Bracket. No disrespect to Jordan here, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be the only person that'll be disappointed if that happens, regardless of the outcome for this particular match.

[EDIT: ...well. Damnit. Commented way too late.]

  6. Last reminder for those that have left votes behind:

    * wch090 and TheGuitahHeroe have so far only voted in the TGH / therex matchup and need to contribute to the others for that vote to count.

    * On the flipside, Phonetic Hero is missing TGH / therex in his votes.

    * And Ringu Man still has Flex / urdailywater to go.

Come on, don't leave those pancakes unfinished! We're good cooks, honest!
