  1. If it's anything like the college tour they did last summer, they'll be on stage but shrouded by darkness while a screen behind them plays the characters and videos (including an uncensored version of the Thunderhorse video with full on tits)
  2. Consider the age of those getting married? Of a younger generation (20s?), then these have to be on the list: Ice Ice Baby Can't Touch This Baby Got Back Those songs will get an immediate cheer from the audience, assuming they're mostly young.
  3. Just as an FYI, Intel procs (of the core2duo nature) won't start to show the immediate result of overheating until they get around 75c and up. When I built my quad core, I hadn't seated the heastink properly at first so it was running at 70c idle. It took a push up to about 95c and then finally shut down automatically, so you shouldn't have THAT to worry about.
  4. I honestly wouldn't mind some kind of evaluation from the current judges as to the WIP-regular reviewers so that WE can actually improve OUR WIP reviewing, possibly even more in-line with their vision. Nothing hugely detail orientated, just some feedback. I especially would like to know if what I post there is pap or actually usable, quality info.
  5. I think it's also the quality of 75% of the WIPs up, too. Some poor soul will come in to take a look, find that clicking randomly mostly yields some yutz who has no business remixing but throws something up that is pretty much entirely bad, and drives that person away. The proportion of good mixes with potential to crap mixes with no real thought behind it is ghastly.
  6. I just hope I'm one of the people who gives out decent advice and doesn't type up 4 paragraphs of crap
  7. Let me just express my extreme interest in Fight 2. Will get cracking on a WIP for that to get it.
  8. Very interested to hear what's opened up; might you be open to having a person do more than one track?
  9. He jumped the shark, we can stop talking about him now.
  10. I think the system, as flawed as it is now, is fine as it is. Any attempt to change it to a "tiered" system would breed elitism. A moderator would be just one step below a judge, so what's the point?
  11. THIS. #ocrwip is superior to the WIP board simply because it's realtime; if you put something up I can listen to it (should I be present) and we can work through it on a more personal level to get the result that YOU, the mixer, want/need. I point to Diseased's Gold Medal Challenge '92 / Double Dribble wip as evidence of that. Because he brought it to #ocrwip in ADDITION to the boards, we were able to isolate the issue (muddy guitars) in no time flat and now his mix sounds very, very good compared to the first one.
  12. ARRANGEMENT / INTERPRETATION [X] Too conservative - sticks too close to the source PRODUCTION [X] Low-quality samples [X] Drums have no energy PERFORMANCE (live recorded audio/MIDI parts) [X] Wrong notes, general sloppiness STRUCTURE [X] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow") [X] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough) PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts) Many, many, many issues with this piece right up front. Let's take it from the top in terms of the checklist. 1. Too Conservative -- it's pretty much just the two original tunes pasted together. I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a midi rip with soundfonts applied to it -- that's how close it follows the source tune. 2. Low quality samples -- the instrument that plays throughout the entire thing and seems to be the anchor of the entire piece (having trouble deciding if it's supposed to be an acoustic guitar or a Japanese stringed instrument of some kind, the sample is that poor). The piano is drenched in delay, while also being drier than beef jerky. Not good. Brass sections also sound incredibly low quality. The organ is the only sound which "fit" the piece. 3. Drums have no energy -- yeah. Really. Totally. I don't know what set you're using for drums but there are better things out there -- free better things. There's no beef to the parts that need beefiness. They also sound incredibly lo-fi; every time the snare or kick drum strikes it's just a mass of hissy fuzz. 4. Wrong notes -- even though it sounds like a midi rip to me, there are still points in the piece that just aren't right in terms of clashing sounds - :48 for example. It seems like a bad chord on the organ is briefly played. 5. Lacks coherence -- it's essentially, as I've said, the two themes put together with a very small bridge in between. 6. Not enough changes in sound -- this might not be so bad if the samples/synths themselves weren't so bad.
  13. Very much so. I think the reason people don't use it is it actually requires that one listen to the piece a couple times at least, gather their thoughts about it, and then apply each set of criteria to it while listening. I can see why this can get a bit disheartening because people like to be able to listen to something once, maybe twice at most, and then say "this is wrong, this is wrong, and this is wrong". But it can't be done that way, because even reviewing a WIP is still -reviewing- something, so it's going to take a bit more work. It boils down to this; I have time to do it. I work a job that keeps me on a computer doing absolutely nothing until something else computer-related breaks elsewhere, then I get to leave for a few minutes. (1 hour of real work a day, 7 of internet free time). I'm not bragging or anything, this actually ties into the first point I made; since I have the TIME to do this I don't MIND doing it. Most of the people perusing the WIP forums fall into select categories: 1. Remixers who review WIPs: they tend to have a better critical ear than most, because they know what it can take to get through and be accepted. However these are the fewest in terms of present population on the WIP board because really, if you're a remixer who's serious about remixing you don't have a ton of time OUTSIDE of remixing to review OTHER people's WIPs. 2. OCRemix listeners who review WIPs: this is where 90% of the "this is kewl!" or "this sux" posts come from. They're there just to hear the music, not critique it in any general way other than enjoying/disliking it. The complaints about the WIP board stem from a general lack of feedback which is certainly true in some cases, but as I said in the points above it just comes down to the fact that reviewing a piece takes time, something not a lot of people have. It's not always a disinterest in the piece itself, glossing over a post because of someone's name, etc. I think I've rambled a ton (and I'm switching between this and a WIP in another tab right now , so essentially, YES the checklist is very helpful, to me.
  14. I do my best to comment on every WIP I listen to (which is a lot of them), and I feel that my "comments" aren't uninformed or baseless on the whole -- for some genres that aren't my forte? Maybe. I like to think that I've been more helpful than detrimental -- most people who ask my advice (or don't) usually end up thanking me for it, as it has done nothing but improved their piece. Whenever I throw up a WIP, it's the usual cadre of 80% useful ego strokejob replies ("this rocks!!!!!!!"), but there's still that 20% that is actually quite helpful. In terms of passing by people I don't recognize? Nope -- if anything, if I don't recognize your name I'm MORE likely to give it a listen. What I DO sometimes pass over are tunes that I am not familiar with, though that's not as often as it used to be (usually in my comments I'll say that I'm not familiar with the tune anyway). Although for the feedback form, I think I'm the ONLY one who uses it.
  15. I can honestly say that after reading this sentence I looked up to see if you were addressing BlueFox (as if he had been unbanned).
  16. PRODUCTION [X] Low-quality samples I liked pretty much everything about this piece, both from a production standpoint and just plain musically. Everything but the first minute, that is. The first minute just seemed rather generic orchestral video game interpretation. To me, it didn't feel like the piece TRULY began until 1:10 when the drums came in, and the backing strings played the opening notes to the Song of Storms (which was very nice). If anything, the first minute needs to be more developed because it almost put me to sleep until it got awesome at 1:10. As for low-quality samples, that should be sample. The flute just doesn't sit right for me; everything else sounds great.
  17. It's the key change. The NES intro goes on entirely too long, and then when it changes to the "remix", it changes key unnaturally, which is very, very jarring.
  18. This is how it goes for me, and it pretty much only works for guitar. Since I've memorized the sound of every open string (eadgbe), I can hear each open string in my mind, at the correct pitch. So whenever I hear someone playing guitar or I myself am playing it, I can tell instantly when it's not right -- the sound in my head will not match the sound I'm playing. Of course, this doesn't go for the the tinest of tiny alterations, hence it's not PERFECT pitch.
  19. ARRANGEMENT / INTERPRETATION PRODUCTION [X] Too loud [X] Too quiet [X] Low-quality sampless [X] Drums have no energy [X] Mixing is muddy (eg. too many sounds in the same range) STRUCTURE [X] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow") [X] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough) [X] Too repetitive PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts) I like the general melody, though I should qualify that statement by saying I've never really given the Bonk soundtrack much of a listen. I like the "live" aspect of the piece, ie the crowd cheer and applause. When the synth comes in over the applause, it seems much too loud, because there's clipping going on (in addition to the audience sound). At :49, during the harmonization part, it clips SEVERELY and is much too loud for my ears anyhow. Guitar in the background might be at a decent volume level, but I can't really tell because the synth is just SO loud. The melody just repeats itself over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Not a good thing. Drums are almost nonexistent for the piece; they're also quite low-fi/low quality and don't fit the rest of the piece. Synth choices could probably be better, not really digging them as they are now -- but that could entirely be due to the volume issue. Overbearing and all. It does have a nice middle-eastern vibe to it which is enjoyable. There's just not enough going on to justify the almost three and a half minutes given to the piece.
  20. I gave some feedback in IRC, but I'll do it here too. Looks like the advice I gave you panned out (pardon the pun ). Rhythm guitar sounds much clearer, more present, and is just plain rockin'. I'm curious to know what it sounds like quad tracked, or with the two tracks just panned hard left and right.
  21. Shark Tale really, really, really, really makes me leery of this despite the praise. Friend dragged me to that movie and it just... I... he... it... Facepalm incarnate.
  22. Oh yeah, I'm 24.
  23. I have a Wii and a 360, and while the Wii used to see a ton of play, it's currently not being used until we're done with our backlog of 360 games.
  24. Currently playing: Rock Band 360. GF singing, me guitar. Next up: GTA4, then Mass Effect, then Metroid Prime 3, then Bully Wii, then Silent Hill 0. Yes, I own all of those and haven't even touched them yet.
