  1. It seems to me like almost everything is directly in the center? As if everything was recorded and no panning was really done. That may be why the guitar sounds so muddy. Rhythm guitar especially -- did you pan the tracks left/right?
  2. You've pretty much covered most of the criticism. By "intro's too long" I'd go so far as to say it's not just too long, but it drags. For both Dancing Mad and Catastrophe it just feels very very very cover-ish... as if not a whole lot of original thought went into it. The lack of percussion probably hurts the first two minutes. To be honest with you, I enjoyed it at the beginning, then about 45 seconds in I got bored. It wasn't until 1:53 that my interest was peaked again at that strange sound that comes across (really awesome by the way), but then it's almost killed by going into a percussion-less organ chord session for too long. Finally at 2:12 it starts to pick up again and, once again, I was interested. But then it stopped To sum it up: Far too much of it just relies on organ chords and little else, and when it does get interesting it only stays interesting for a little bit and suddenly we're back to organ chords. If this were my mix, the first priority would be to trim the fat and rework the first 2 minutes until it had a bit more originality to it. This has a lot of potential.
  3. Going to forgo the standard outline due to the fact that this is purely for arrangement: I don't know that this could be exactly called "guitarlicious"... yes, it's mostly (or will be, I suppose) guitar-based, but it seems very very very very VERY mellow. Probably too mellow to be "guitarlicious" (which evokes blistering guitar awesomeness in my mind). Don't take that as me calling it bad, it definitely has potential, but after a while it does start to drag at over five minutes long. Maybe the final product, un-midi-ized, will help it to not feel so long. Good luck!
  4. PERFORMANCE (live recorded audio/MIDI parts) [X] Timing not tight enough [X] Wrong notes, general sloppiness STRUCTURE [X] Too short PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts) Much better tone this time around compared to other things I've heard from you. Whatever setup changes/additions/anything new you've done, don't change it again because this sound great. Only issues are the somewhat sloppiness of it (wrong note at :24, coming in just a tad late at :38, etc), and the repetitive harmonization at the beginning. For some reason the harmonization works, but only for so longer. Might want to think of starting out with just one line doubled up, and then change into the harmonization after a bit. Otherwise this is probably going to kickass.
  5. Version 3. The previous version was built on fairly bad synth, was it not? Or am I thinking of a different mix?
  6. Tons of people here who may be interested, including myself and perhaps Tensei if he has the time.
  7. And the new version sounds much better because of it.
  8. Real answer: don't use synth patches for guitar. Use the real thing.
  9. S'what I figured. Let me know when we need to buy.
  10. Dunno... guess I sort of lost interest in it. I may pick it up some day, but there are other things ahead of it right now, such as my Lufia metal suite and a few other tunes I want to do.
  11. Not sure what I can offer you except for the Wily metal cover I did (but never got around to finishing) Give these a listen and see if they don't inspire you. http://metalfrog.org/music/megaman/oldwily/wily-newdrums-50.mp3 http://metalfrog.org/music/megaman/oldwily/newrpg-52.mp3 Hopefully, you'll finish, unlike me
  12. Way too short to give any constructive analysis. Other than the good sampling.
  13. PRODUCTION [X] Low-quality samples [X] Drums have no energy STRUCTURE [X] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow") [X] Too short [X] Abrupt ending PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts) Oh, god. Let me get this right out of the way, as someone who utilizes live guitar, this sampled stuff just completely raped my ear drums. It's no offense to you, it's just that sampled guitar -- especially bad/obviously sampled guitar -- almost never goes over well. It's my opinion that if this is to proceed at all, you'll need to either change the genre and stop using fake guitar, or lay down some real guitar tracks in place of the synth ones. Actually, I can see this track rocking fairly well with real electric guitar. Drums seem kind of lifeless as it is right now; snare has a bit more reverb than I usually like, and it seems like it's buried in the mix. I can't even here the kick drum at all. Definite potential, but with definite concerns that need to be addressed.
  14. ARRANGEMENT / INTERPRETATION [X] Too conservative - sticks too close to the source PRODUCTION [X] Drums have no energy STRUCTURE [X] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough) [X] Too repetitive PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts) First of all, no knock against you or this mix, but no mix will ever ever ever EVER top this one for this song: Now that that's out of the way... Too conservative. The main melody runs throughout almost the entire WIP. There are only a few brief moments where it strays into originality. Kick drum is fine, but everything else is just too quiet percussive-wise and doesn't induce any "get up and groove" energy. The synth used for the main line is... eh... grating. Maybe it's not the synth itself, but the fact that it's used for the entire song for the main melody, with very few changes throughout. This goes to the repetitive nature of the piece; just not enough to stray and call it a "remix" of sorts. It sounds more like a cover in dance-mode (though again, percussive elements aren't there to make me want to dance). The ending also drags on far too long with no percussion behind it, and it may just be me but the end gets louder than the rest of the piece unnaturally.

ARRANGEMENT / INTERPRETATION [X] Too conservative - sticks too close to the source [ ] Too liberal - not enough connections to the source (too much original writing) [ ] Too much direct sampling from original game audio [ ] Borrows heavily from non-source material (eg. a theme from a movie) PRODUCTION [ ] Too loud [ ] Too quiet [ ] Low-quality samples [ ] Unrealistic sequencing [X] Generic/cliche sound choices [ ] Drums have no energy [ ] Overcompressed (pumping/no dynamics) [ ] Mixing is muddy (eg. too many sounds in the same range) PERFORMANCE (live recorded audio/MIDI parts) [ ] Timing not tight enough [ ] Wrong notes, general sloppiness [ ] Poorly recorded [ ] Bad intonation STRUCTURE [ ] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow") [ ] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough) [ ] Pace too plodding [X] Too repetitive [ ] Too short [ ] Abrupt ending PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts) Not at all my genre of music, both as a critic and a listener, but I'll give it a go. Great source tune to try and work with, unfortunately the length of it leaves a lot to be desired in remixing it. I feel that it just goes on too long for what it is; the main melody is revisted far too often and only actually reinterpreted once (1:33). Piano sample is nice. The constant dun-dundundun-dundundun-dundundun of the backing synth gets grating after a while. Pizzacato strings (that's what I'm hearing, right? Or is it just a random synth?) sound good. For three minutes and fourty seconds I would expect a LOT more interpretation than what was given by this. Drums staying at main volume as everything else fades is also quite jarring; perhaps the whole entire thing should just fade out?

Seems almost like a complete cover of the original tune from start to finish with little given to interpreting the actual melody. The synthy-bleeps that run throughout the backing of the entire track can get a bit old after a while. A bit of conservatism on its use might be beneficial. Drums don't seem to fit the "vibe" that the tune is giving off; they're too quiet, too reserved, and don't vary a whole lot with each part of the tune. Lead synth sounds a little "harsh" to my ears, but that may be the wrong vocabulary to describe what I am feeling; perhaps droning? Just not enough oomph behind it.
  17. ARRANGEMENT / INTERPRETATION [ ] Too conservative - sticks too close to the source [ ] Too liberal - not enough connections to the source (too much original writing) [ ] Too much direct sampling from original game audio [ ] Borrows heavily from non-source material (eg. a theme from a movie) >Not familiar with the source tune (I haven't played Battletoads since it originally came out on the NES) PRODUCTION [ ] Too loud [ ] Too quiet [ ] Low-quality samples [ ] Unrealistic sequencing [ ] Generic/cliche sound choices [ ] Drums have no energy [ ] Overcompressed (pumping/no dynamics) [X] Mixing is muddy (eg. too many sounds in the same range) PERFORMANCE (live recorded audio/MIDI parts) [ ] Timing not tight enough [X] Wrong notes, general sloppiness [ ] Poorly recorded [ ] Bad intonation >Not so much as "wrong notes", just doesn't seem imaginative - solo is sloppy. STRUCTURE [ ] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow") [ ] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough) [X] Pace too plodding [X] Too repetitive [X] Too short [X] Abrupt ending Overall thoughts: I'm a metal-whore, and produce pretty much metal tracks exclusively. I am very snobby about guitar tone (my own, at least), so don't take this as harsh. The guitar tone is muddled, and the solo is difficult to hear near the end. Track is definitely repetitive, revisiting the same themes over and over with little variance. Drums are much too loud. Is it just me or is the snare localized completely to the left? Synth is out of place and does not at all match with the feel you seem to be going with (synth solo at 1:51 sounds good though, I'd keep that). As noted before, difficult to hear the solo, but when I can I don't want to -- just doesn't fit the piece at all. I don't know whether or not it's a side-effect of Newground's flash, but there seems to be something weird going on in the high registers of the piece -- specifically the highhats/cymbals.
  18. Reminds me of ugtz (used game trading zone) from 10 years ago. No, literally -- 10 years ago. I was trading N64 and PS1 games on that site.
  19. Bioshock film to be directed by Pirates director - awesome Bioshock film to be directed by Pirates 2&3 director - oh shit no
  20. When I went, $48 was close enough to see the sweat on the composer's head as things went wrong with the event.
  21. Without some serious routing, FR's are out of the question for you. Also, since it's a strat, what is the pickup configuration? Single/Single/Single?
  22. First of all, what guitar are you rebuilding? "Floyd Rose" can mean anything, and there are so many different types out there (too many licensed kinds that suck, OFR's that rock, Ibanez Edge's/Lo Pro's/ZR's which rock) etc. I ask because cavity routing is very important when it comes to buying a floating bridge of any kind; the trem posts may not be spaced properly for what you buy online. Need to know measurements or, better yet, guitar model. Unless you're actually just building an entire guitar, in which case... if you're asking these questions you're not ready to do that yet
