OCR02154 - Cave Story "The Angels of Hell"
Random Hero replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Thanx Guys. This was definitely a fun song to work on and I still catch myself listening, and analysing it from time to time. I'm very proud of it, flaws and all. I wonder if anyone picked up on my little homage to the theme song from Fringe at about 3:10? I am also very glad that I didn't miss 2010 with a mixpost! lol I know a few people have said I should do more, and I do actually produce more then one mix a year. But I don't submit the 'not so good' stuff and there is a bit of that. I should start work on 2011 mix now and maybe get 2 in this year! haha And for all those that loved it, here is the alternate ending to the song, which was just cut off the end of version posted here. It features music from the original WII version of Cave Store, not the updated one! ENJOY Click here to listen to The Angels of Hell alt ending.mp3 -
Still working on them I'm gonna tinker a bit with the equalization a small bit and a few other settings. I still have to set up keyswitches (changing the way the certain notes are played; up, down, accented, etc, for certain sections. Right now, I have added ZERO reverb to any of the instruments, all you hear is what was recorded naturally with the front mics when the guys from EWQL made the samples. When the arrangement is totally completed, I'm gonna go back and mix in samples recorded from mics at the back of the hall (surround mics) which can give lots of natural hall reverberation. (I upgraded to the "platinum pro xp" version of EWQLSO.) Of all the instruments, the piano needed the most work, especially in the section where it is more exposed. Still working on it. The major clipping has already been fixed. I'm still toying with ideas for a proper ending, as the chiptune bit is more of a joke then anything. When I submit it, that part will not be there. That being said, I'm still not happy with the way the main song ends as is. Sick of the song? hahaha! It always takes me a long time to finish a song, especially now that I'm trying new things to really add some realism to the song. Thanks for the advice Mono, I think it's helping!! RR

Ok, so I did some major upgrading to my sample library and also started looking at new ways to make the instruments in my songs sound more 'real'. I know I said the last version would be the last WIP but I decided to keep making improvements to the song. Here is a quickly thrown together version, Some changes have already been made since this version was mixed including: -changing the intro string arrangement AGAIN -humanizing and changing the piano section. -fixing the clipped part at the end.

I think I have figured out why, or at least part of the reason. I'm using ESQLSO Gold XP Pro for all of the samples in the song and I have recently confirmed that, as I expected, I have been using the sample library to (maybe) 40% of it's full potential. I have found a 123 page manual for the library and I plan on getting into more of the finer points of the program before I put out a final version of the song. I am also unhappy with the over use of strings and lack of much else (brass for example) in the song, as well as many of the cymbals need to be removed/altered/fixed. So that being said, the song has a bit more work needed yet and I hope I can make it sound a bit more realistic. If anyone has any experience in fine tuning ESQLSO Gold stings, any help would be great. RR

UPDATED Final Mix Attempt 1: "The Angels of Hell" Here is my first attempt at a final Mix of "The Angles of Hell" Not completely happy with the result; the Short flute notes at the beginning sound 'odd', I think some of the EQing is off, and maybe I need to add some compression here and there. I think I'm done the the composition part of the song and now I need to work on the actual production... the part I am least good at. So all help is welcome!!! The music is based on the Wii and original version of Cave Story. Late, but meh. So I subbmitted both parts of the song to the judges. And as most of you know, This first part was a direct post to the site http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01872/ The second part was subbmitted a while after, but there was an issue with a non video game reference at the end of the song. So I pulled the submission. Well I fixed this issue and here is the result. This version has also been submitted (Nov 22, 2009) so it should be entering the panel soon... i hope Ryan -
OCR01944 - Super Mario Galaxy "Meteorites and Rabbits"
Random Hero replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Little bro's first posted remix... awwwwwww! I guess it's thanks to him that I even got into remixing. I remember a number of years ago, he was working on something on our parents computer hours on end, I can't even remember what song or game it was from. But I kinda got the idea to try something of my own. If he could do it, so could I (sibling rivalry at its finest). I would ask him all kinds of question about FL Studio (Fruity Loops at the time) and eventually I came up with a song. Now all these years later, I am still asking him questions and I have 4 posted remixes and now he has one too.. WHICH I LIKE!! Love this piece. Very soothing, very much different from my work, which is usually dark and sinister. Very nice indeed. Maybe we will have to try and work on something together again sometime, last time was a semi-flop! Try again? -
Just finished (for the second time) Part II of Pumber's Bane. The orginial ending was to much of a copy from a non-game source. I get the feeling that there may be a Part III in the near future. The new ending of part II is based on the Castle theme from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and i want to develop it into a full song.. we'll see.. Plumber's Bane may become a series of songs for me.

6 WIPS, Which one do u like best???
Random Hero replied to Random Hero's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
You are completely right about the Star Wars connection. I've done that a couple times here, the other with "March on Death Mountain". I don't think either of these songs are eligible for submission to this site, but I still like them. As for "Requiem for Spirit" the part of the song from 2:30-3:09 is still kinda close to it's Star Wars Roots, So I might expand the RoS theme into that section more. Same with 4:37-4:47. I'm hoping u recognized the rest of the song as a Minor version of Zelda's Theme. The theme was originally in a major key and I hope changing it doesn't disguise it to much! -
6 WIPS, Which one do u like best???
Random Hero replied to Random Hero's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Picked up on that did you? hahaha. I never copied it directly, but yeah, i was definitly drawing on that theme + 'Requiem for a Tower' -
1. When the Dreamer Awakens - Zelda: Links Awakening, Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. The Sad Little Mushroom - Super Mario RPG, SMW 3. Robotasize Me - Sonic Spinball (The Machine) 4. March on Death Mountain - Zelda: A Link to the Past (Death Mountain) 5. Dual Towers - Super Mario RPG (Both Booster's Tower Themes) 6. Across the Fields of Hyrule - Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Zelda's Lullaby, Requiem of Spirit) Of all the stuff I have started over the last few years, these are the only things that are close to done but still need work. Let me know what one you like best, suggestions comments.. anything! A couple of the songs share certain lines of music, just so you know and there are a couple of audio glitches here and there. lol Notes: 1 and 6 have basically the same into and ending. 4 and 6 are heavely influenced by two Star Wars themes. Thanx

Hey guys.. Thanx for the comments, glad u like!! First Direct Post BTW!! I don't know if anyone noticed, but the intro to this song is paying tribute to David Arnold's Independence Day soundtrack; A movie I have seen dozens of times and still love. Actually, I had never seen the movie in theater thou, that is, until last night!!! They actually showed it last night and I HAD to go see it!! If u haven't seen it, U SUCK! hahaha JK. Now: Plumber's Bane Part 2: Well, I think this part has been put on hold. I did submit it, but there was an issue with the ending. I meant to fix it but never did. SO it will be submitted again soon!
