Oh yes this Tyrian piece is much better than the Kraid piece, it's more expressive and dynamic. But yeah it does kinda piss me off that he couldn't be bothered to specify what we should judge. YES to Tyrian

OCR00948 - *YES* Chrono Trigger 'Enter the Frog' *RESUB*
Malcos replied to DarkCecil13's topic in Judges Decisions
Whoops sorry, it seems I missed this. Ok lets see, is this OCR quality? Yes. It's over my line. Not by much, but it's over. YES -
Well this is a long one. 6.20 The sounds are ok in this, and effects have been nicely applied to most of the instruments. I don't like the drums at 0.48, but I suppose it's to make way for the better drums that come in later, although there is quite a bit of reverb on them. I think it would have been better to bring the drums more up front and lay off all that reverb. If a mix is this long, you gotta really make it very interesting. I think this mix would have had a much better impact if it was cut in half - because the second half isn't much different from the first, and it does get tiring by the 5th minute. NO Boooooooring. Cut it in half then re-encode at 160kbps.

Ok, I can say with almost 100% certainty (now that I've listened to the original extensively again) that the string parts are sampled. I don't know if the rest of the mix apart from the sample is strong enough to carry it. This is really tearing me in half, which I know doesn't help.

OCR00946 - *YES* Silent Hill 2 'True (It's Gone Now)' *FT*
Malcos replied to m68030's topic in Judges Decisions
There's something about the way this song was done. Thats it - the expression. Very organic, well played and well put together. YES -
*NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Hyrule Princess 5 Trigger'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I can hear distortion everywhere, and I don't think it's deliberate. Hmmm, that drum fill really doesn't fit. This mix is kinda wierd IMO. It sounds like a lot of stuff was put together without considering whether it would all work. This person's soundcard has some really bad signal to noise ratio. NO -
Well the transitions weren't too bad, but this is kinds strange. One minute the mix sounds good, then bad, then really good again. I think it's that distorted guitar, I don't like the way it sounds. The brass however sounds very good to my ears. It ws really quite sparse on layers throughout. Nah, this one just didn't do it for me. NO

Excellent arrangement, but Needs a lot more reverb, and I can hear some parts where the kick drum has been programmed in, and then the same sound has been doubled up. NO

*NO* Final Fantasy 6 'Psychotic Tendency' *RESUB*

Link doesn't work for me. -
Erm, how do I get this?

OCR00943 - *YES* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Her Azure Eyes'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is very good indeed. My mind is saying "Harder kick drum!" but this was not the feel that the mix was going for, just my personal thing. YES -
I was on this boss for soooo long, so I am familiar with this song quite a bit. This sounds like the string parts have been sampled, although I'm only about 80% sure because the rest of the mix uses high quality sounds. This is difficult. I like the mix, no doubt, but the question is as DJP poses it. The issue here is whether the sample carries the whole mix. I'll come back to this one later.

What are these called again? Chip tunes is the term I believe. Me: I might be wrong here, but this sounds like 'beat on top of midi'. I personally found the music from Sonic Spinball rather grating, and this is just like more of the same. I don't think this is what OCR needs. NO
-
Orchestral? With that fat delay on the piano? Are you sure? 1.33 Some next insrument takes over from the piano part. Can't tell what it is, because of the delay (violin?), but that wasn't too smooth. Ending was like, what? I literally squeaked "What?!" NO No comment.

OCR00942 - *YES* Tales of Phantasia 'Merriment in Morlia'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the way that this progresses into the main mix. Nice use of effects (just the right amount of reverb), good arrangement, mixing. Couldn't hear anything wrong with this mix really. YES -
I was about to comment on the crackling, but it's gone now. I must say that I think the percussion on this is excellent, that crisp sound. This song moves from some orchestra thing with beats to electronica. 2.13: Oh yeah. You gotta love that programming 2.52: Huh? Oh oh, the crackling's back, and then it fades out. Hmmm, didn't like that bit. But I enjoyed this mix overall, so I'm gonna say YES

Does anyone remember when we got that REALLY LOUD guitar mix? Well this one is really really quiet. Ok lets turn this up. Waaaaaaaay up... Ok, nice sounds, high hat panned to the far left. Sounds like it played in live, it's got that live timing like it wasn't quantised too much. The pads are soothing, and..... Oh. The song got cut off at 1.36. Oh I see. That's because this is downloaded from Geocities. Full review pending. EDIT: Turn your speakers BACK DOWN
-
Intro was waaayy too long. When the song came in it actually made me jump! The timing of the instruments is erm....different. It's like the beat is 4/4, but the instruments are on something else. And without any sort of warning, the song is finished with some kinda reverbed crashing noise thingy. The 'suddeness' of the mix is quite refreshing, but I couldn't keep up with the timing and I think OCR listeners would be like 'huh? what?' so NO

*NO - djpretzel VETO* Lemmings (SNES) 'The Revenge of Mr. Lemming'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
It's well arranged, and the panning is interesting, the organ being placed on the right. The beat would be out of place in any other remix, but this is appropiriate for lemmings. The only 2 crtiticisms for this mix is that the piano could do with some more reverb, and it seemed as if the ending was just a chord slapped on at the end. But anyway YES -
OCR00929 - Super Hang-On "Smooth Ride"
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The day I made this I was in a very chilled out, very calm mood and I suppose that came out in the mix. I'm usually a bit more hyped up, especially when I'm making a remix! I knew that I had to cover this track eventually, as Super Hang On was the first game I ever put into my megadrive. K-Wix, I do agree, it is a little static compared to my previous stuff, but like I said, I was just too laid back that day! Hope you enjoy. -
*NO* Panzer Dragoon 'Panzers Rolling' *FT*
Malcos replied to Antonio Pizza's topic in Judges Decisions
This is not too bad, but when the main part comes in with the drums I could hear clipping, and digital clipping doesn't sound nice. Sound like he just did an eq of the whole song at the end instead of adding a real bassline to it. NO Work on sorting out the clipping and add a bassline. -
The drums strike me as being rather odd. The song doesn't have coherency, and the instruments just don't work together. NO
-
Nice piano work! But the sustain needs to be held for the last few notes in each bar as well, and a higher quality version would be good as well. If this was done, I would say yes without a doubt. It would be good to see this on OC. So NO for now.
-
Oh yeah I forgot I can vote on my own mix. YES
-
Hey I swear I already voted on this mix? Or maybe I just thought I did. Anyway.... Yeah, this is kinda hard, because nothing about the mix stands out, the whole song seems kinda passive, and kinda limp. The instruments are ok, although the song just seems repetitive. I know some songs are meant to sit in the background, but this just did not hold my attention at all. I think this mix needs more variation. A lot more. NO
