  1. I agree with a lot of what has been said here. I recognise that rex loop from Reason, the second one in the 'glitch' folder. While some variation has been added (mostly 32nd notes added in between hits to achieve a stuttering effect) the drum loop is used almost exactly as it is previewed. Now that isn't a bad thing in itself, but the fact is that it is very repetitive and is the mainstay of the percussion. There isn't much need for me to go into further detail regarding the other elements, but suffice to say, this needs a thicker texture and more varied arrangement. What is here is very good, it's just that it runs out of steam after a while and feels underdeveloped. NO (Good candidate for resubmission)
  2. The instruments need to sound more definied in terms of mixing, as they sound quite distant and lost when there are several playing at once. The arrangent is very good, and the instruments chosen really work with the stlye. It is the execution that needs to be taken up to another level. The ending makes this feel incomplete - this submission is good, just needs some more work. NO (Good candidate for resubmission)
  3. This does work well on some styles that would have a band all together in one room (jazz, rock) as long as you roll off the low fequencies so not much reverb is bring put on the kick and bass. For electronic styles it doesn't have as good an effect...
  4. The choir was quite a large part of the mix. Without it, I'm not sure whether this mix would have had the impact on the panel that it has. I agree with a lot of the constructive criticism, particularly with regard to the lengthy gaps in the song. For me the biggest issue is the balance of the sample vs the other elements. I do feel that this needs more work in order to make the sample more of a peripheral factor rather than the one thing taking this mix to the next level. This for me needs to set a standard for mixes using heavily sampled elements. NO (Good candidate for resub)
  5. The arrangement here is excellent. The instrumentation sounds warm, and the piano fills are a joy to listen to. The vocals however are a different story. Techically they are done very well - however they lack the subtlety and intimacy that the mix demands. They way they are mixed is also quite exposed. The vocalist needed to get a lot closer to the mic to give the vocals more depth both aurally and emotionally. For me the instrumentation and vocals just don't gel. NO
  6. If you've registered your copy of Reason 3 on the website, then it will all go smoothly. You will get a card inside the upgrade box (which is just like a full version but with 'upgrade' on the box instead) which will tell you to log in and enter the details on the card. The system will then check you are a registered user etc, and then you will be emailed a full R4 license number.
  7. This sounds great, especially the GoDown mix! Looks like UT will be back big time! This will hopefully bring back the grit of the original UT99, before it went all quakey.
  8. This is good, but is it oil ocean? The source uses the arabian scale, and so does this mix - however for me that is the only similarity I can hear here. By that logic, anyone could submit a song using the arabian scale and say that it is oil ocean. NO
  9. This is certainly not the kind of thing we get on a regular basis, and adds musical diversity to the site. That aside, the arrangement is very good, mixing in source sections in between original material. I don't have much else to say, other than the fact that this is a YES
  10. The arrangement here is definitely a pass, however the production needs cleaning up in a few places. The piano intro is too quiet compared to the rest of the mix, and the snare is quite loud compared to the rest of the instruments. I also agree with BGC about the heavy right-sided panning. Working on these small but significant issues will ensure a pass. NO (Good candidate for resub)
  11. http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01169/ Source file here.
  12. I'm with Zircon here in giving kudos to the drum programing on this. The bassline is very low in frequency and so may seem low in volume to some. This is very engaging in terms of arragement, and the execution is very original. All adds up to a YES
  13. Well I'll give it a go. The key to this is sidechain compression, using the kick rhythm to change the volume of the bassline. As the kick goes in the bass volume goes down. Then in a matter of milliseconds the volume goes up again, giving a pumping effect to the beat. Let me use some rns files to illustrate this: 1. Original This is just something I quickly threw together. No effects or mixing at all! Nastiness. 2. Mixing Here I have cut down the lowest frequencies of the kick drum so that the bassline can sit underneath that. Then I have cut down some frequencies in the bass synth so that the kick can be most prominent at those frequencies, so the kick and bass are now tight with each other. I have also added some compression to level out the bass and add a little more intensity to the drums. 3. Sidechain compression. I have created a redrum and selected a kick that works nicely to let my bass 'pump'. The output from this first channel is fed into the 'sidechain in' on the compression machine that controls the bass. Now I can program a four to the floor kick pattern on the redrum (or just play it in as I did). The kick signal goes into the compressor and triggers a gain reduction. Still sounds powerful but neat at the same time. 4. Final With effects etc. Hope that was helpful in some way.
  14. Yeah I definitely agree with that point. I would use the blog as an adjunct to my musical projects and for posting WIPS and general ideas. A one-off payment for a blog that has a specifically music-based focus sounds like a good idea to me, I'm in.
  15. I suppose the best thing to do would be to play the game twice, once while saving all the little sisters, and then the second time not saving them. I also missed out one room in the game, in the flet theatre, when the 'artist is preparing'. This is one of the best best fps games I have ever played, on par with Halflife and Deus Ex (only the first one, second one was rubbish!). Combining a contemporary art form with a touch of philosophy is a winner.
  16. I doubt my voice will fit the style, but I'd be up for doing some vocals.
  17. I enjoyed expressing my views in your survey, good questions. You're gonna have to do a lot of reading of the results though!
  18. The name of the mix is terrible, however if the remixer wants the word poop in one of their remixes then that is up to them...artistic license and all that. The arrangement here is very good and a lot of original material has been added. As usual with medleys the transitions become a point of focus. For me the first transition at 1.04 was the most jarring, with the subsequent ones being less so. The instruments have been used well here, although they might not be of the highest quality. The rather short length does detract some brownie points but the arrangement doesn't leave me with the impression that this is underdeveloped in any way. So YES
  19. I like the choir sounds, they seem more appropriate here than in the last version. The drumbeat and bassline were quite repetitive for most of the time, which is fine for the style as the original does it as well. However, here the drumbeat is almost the same as the source while the bassline is a simplified version for the most part. At 3 mins in, we get a whole new electronica/hip hop style section; different, but felt rather disjointed - I ddin't think it blended that well with the rest of the mix. All minor issues aside, this being a groove style mix, the groove is still just like the source's groove. NO
  20. Definitely goes the ambient route, mainly relying on the chords from the source in the intro section. This track is very short, I think that it could have been extended somewhat by bringing in the bridge section from the source, and the mix seems to be somewhat of an anti-climax because of that; the ending sounds as if there was meant to be more but the remixer just cut it off. This needs some more work. NO (Good candidate for resub)
  21. Wow this is amazing, and great music Mazedude! There is no Capoeira anywhere near me so this will be very useful.
  22. I played this on the 360 first, just because the pc demo wasn't out yet. I'm not into FPS on joypads at all! But yeah, this could have a storyline as epic as half-life. I just hope that my x1950pro can play it nicely enough... By the way, screw fileplanet, the bastards, teasing everyone. Now we're all just getting it via bittorrent. Edit: Played the PC demo, runs great, looks just like the 360 version!
  23. I definitely agree with what has already been said. The guitars are quite rough and grungy in stark contrast to the clean, rather weak sounding drums. The arrangement needs some more original elements to it. This still needs some more work. NO (Good candidate for resub)
