  1. Any East Coast OCRers going to Gauntlet in NY on the 16th? If so, let me know, maybe we can meet up and play some friendlies.
  2. I'm curious as to whether or not I'm the only person here who is good with the ice climbers specifically after forcefully eliminating the cpu controlled one. I can play with one Ice Climber if I have to, but I find that I'm most effective when I have both of them. The double smash attack and grab combos aren't possible with just one. Also, Ice Climbers vid featuring Chu Dat: As for the tier list, I think it's pretty accurate. The tiers aren't necessarily based on which character is the "best", but also on potential, who wins at tourneys, learning curve, etc. There are TONS of Fox and Falco players at tourneys, so it only makes sense for Fox and Falco to be at the top of the tier list. Conversely, I've never seen a Mewtwo player at a tourney, so he's at the bottom. Tiers don't really mean anything, because a good Roy will always beat a bad Fox. They exist to give you an idea about the characters. And regarding this whole "casual vs. competitive" debate...I go to tournaments as frequently as possible. The items are off, stages are banned and there's a time limit. I play and I have a great time. When I'm playing with my friends, we turn items on, go to Hyrule Temple and play 12-minute matches (wall-tech FTW!). I play and I have a great time. Casual play and competitive play are not mutually exclusive. I'm not sure why so many people have taken this either/or attitude.
  3. I don't think anyone posted this, but they released a new tier list over a month ago, for anyone who's interested:
  4. So, the month of August has been a good month for Smash Bros. Melee tournaments in CT. I went to a tourney on August 12th held at a local mall. There was a fair turnout, about 25 people or so. I easily defeated my first opponent with my Roy, beating his Link and then his Kirby for a straight-sets victory. My next opponent proved a little more difficult. He played with Yoshi, and beat me in the first round, but I rallied to beat him twice in a row and claim victory. Afterwards, I had the unfortunate pleasure of facing my friend JV Smooth in the semifinals of the winners bracket. He beat me in straight sets with his Peach. After that, I went to the losers bracket, where I faced my friendly rival, a kid who calls himself V. We've faced each other at every tournament that we've both been at, so we have a friendly rivalry. He won the first round by one stock, and I won the second round by one stock. The final round could have gone either way, but he triumphed with one stock left. It was the best match I've ever played, even though I ended up losing and being eliminated as a result. I finished 5th at that tournament I believe. That Tuesday, a friend of ours hosted a Smashfest that he called Viva la Smash at his home. It was a two-day event, but my friend JV and I were only able to attend on Wednesday. There was a friendly free tournament, so we participated. I played Green Hunter first, a Smasher from Mass. that uses Samus (I think he may be a member of the Mages). He beat my Roy, then beat my Marth for a straight-set victory. Afterwards, I played three people in the losers bracket, and beat them all handily. But unfortunately, I had to face JV again at this tournament, and he beat and eliminated me. I tied for 7th at this tournament. After that tourney, we all hung out playing friendly matches. I was choosing my characters randomly, and the Ice Climbers came up. I used to play with them pretty seriously, but I left them to focus solely on Roy. Since they came up on random, I played with them, and proceeded to own everyone I faced. I even played Green Hunter in a friendly, and I beat him. I was very surprised at how well I played with them after ignoring them for months. So I think I'm going to switch them back to being my main characters, in place or Roy. I'll practice up with them, and hopefully have them at 100% in time for the next tourney, which is only a few weeks away.
  5. A heads-up for any Connecticut Smashers: There will be a Smash Bros. Melee tournament held at Buckland Hills Mall in Manchester, CT this Saturday. Anyone interested can check out the thread on smashboards here: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=79679 Be sure to come out and support the CT Smash scene! Plus, the more of you who show up, the mpre money I'll win when I take first place!
  6. When I played shminkledorf, he recorded our match. I'm trying to get a copy of that video from him. I didn't really see anyone else recording though, so I'm not sure.
  7. I went to a tournament a couple of weeks ago. There were a few well-known smashers there (PC Chris, UnknownForce, Krazy Jones and Korean DJ), and overall it was alot of fun.I didn't play nearly as well as I would have liked to. In fact, I went two and out (the tourney was double elimination). I played as Roy most of the time, and I only won one match when I switched to Jigglypuff (the victory came against a Falco on Final Destination). Basically, I choked. The first match I lost was against a person who's handle was V (my handle was Jam Stunna). I'd faced him in the tourney before this one, and beat him, when he used Fox and I had Roy. So this time was a rematch, and he beat me soundly. I didn't N-air a single time when I faced him this time, and I paid the price. Next, I faced a player named shmenkledorf. His Falco beat my Roy, my Jiggs beat his Falco, and his Marth owned my Jiggs. And that fast, I was out of the tourney. I didn't play the way I practiced, and I didn't stick to my gameplan, so I lost horribly. I'm mostly dissapointed because I did worse at this, my third tourney, than I did in my second one (I had four victories in the losers bracket before getting eliminated by UnknownForce at that one). Oh well, there's always next time. EDIT- Found the tournament results:
  8. Wow, that was really good. Wario looked hilariously accurate.
  9. While that is true, it somehow shows the developer's lack of creativity whenever they do so. Yeah, I can agree with that.
  10. I don't know why everyone hates "clone" characters so much. Yes they have the same movesets, but in almost every case they're so different that they require completely different playing styles. You can't play with Gandondorf the same way that you play with C. Falcon and hope to win.
  11. Seriously? I hope they leave it in. Sure, it has its abuses, but it's also the only thing that makes some characters competitive (Luigi, Ice Climbers, etc.). But then again, with the unavoidable lag that the game will have online, maybe wavedashing might not be possible, or it'll be extremely difficult. That's one of the reasons why I'm not really excited to see Smash Bros. go online.
  12. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5295353616970642959&q=DBR Educate yourself.
  13. Bah, I dunno. I'm just not a fan of having to fight the stages, too. It's just more satisfying to beat them man to man, no items, no cheap deaths. Then again, My PvP experience with the game is limited to my brother. I've never really played the game competitively before. By the way, what exactly are the generally accepted character tiers for SSBM? My best characters seem to be Roy, Fox, and Donkey Kong. This is the most recent tier list I could find (source: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=50171&page=1)
  14. Marth was in both Fire Emblem 1 and 3, neither of which was released outside of Japan. Roy was in Fire Emblem 6, which was the first Fire Emblem for the GBA. Once again though, it was never released outside of Japan. He also made a cameo in Fire Emblem 7.
  15. I doubt they'll take out WDing, as it was an intentional part of Melee. Perhaps not to the extent that people have been using it, but intentional nonetheless. If you watch the trailer closely, Mario actually does a wavedash. Right before Snake appears from underneath the box, Mario jumps into the air, wavedashes and does a down smash on Link.
  16. I just want to see more Fire Emblem love in the game. Characters: Zephiel (FE 6) Lyndis (FE 7) Hector (FE 7) Lyon (FE Stages: Sanctuary of Dragons (FE 6) Dragon's Gate (FE 7) Songs: Beneath a New Light (FE 6) In the Name of Bern (FE 6) Companions (FE 7) Dragon's Gate II (FE 7) Distant Roads (FE Land of Promise (FE Actually, Zephiel might be hard to pull off as a character, since he's so huge and slow in the game. He'd probably be better as a villain. Along those lines, I think it would be cool if adventure mode had a branching boss system, where you could fight different final bosses depending on your performance. Instead of just fighting Bowser or Giga Bowser, you can fight Pig Gannon, Majora's Mask, Zephiel, Nergal, or any number of final villains. But that's really a stretch I think.
  17. In the trailer, it looks like you have to grab an item in order to use the super attack, which is no big deal since items break the game anyway. It looks very interesting, and could add a new dimension to the standard Smash Bros. fighting formula.
  18. I used to be Rags when you were still around. When I first started getting into SSBM competitively, your Link guide was the first guide I ever read. I never really played as Link, but it was so good that I took the non-character specific tips and incorporated them into my game. I've been playing competitively for a while. I went to a tournament a few weeks ago, and it turned out to be a pretty good deal. Jinx, Unknown Force and PC Chris showed up, along with a few other well known people and tons of less-well known but still good players. I did fairly well. I was knocked into the losers bracket after my first fight, but pulled off three consecutive victories before being eliminated by Unknown Force. Like you said, I find that playing competitively is the most fun, but I do like to mess around with my friends in Super Sudden Death with 50 stock . I've been trying a few different characters, since I feel like the best way to beat an opponent is to know how to play with his character. But I usually rely on Roy, Ice Climbers, and Luigi for tournaments. I've always had a hard time against Falcos, but I'm getting better against them. A new character I've had difficulty against is Peach. One of my good friends that I train with has an awesome Peach, and he would beat me pretty consistently. So I just started using Marth as a counter-character for Peach, and that's working out really well. Needless to say, I'm extremely excited about the new SSB, and I'll definitely be first in line to pick it up.
  19. Wow, a new Smash Bros. game announced and a post by Garde in the same night. Truly, the gods are smiling down upon us. Sidenote- I totally owned a Falco player today with Jiggs.
  20. WHA? http://revolution.ign.com/articles/707/707504p1.html Solid Snake as playable character = WOW EDIT- Jacked!
  21. Yup, Ice Climbers should be much higher. I used to play competitively a few years ago in local tournaments (won most of the smaller ones) and only used Ice Climbers, my best character(s). Their smash attacks are freaking good. My best characters are: 1. Ice Climbers 2. Ness 3. Sheik However, I do much better when there are items turned on. My best game comes from throwing items, as I'm pretty good at gauging where to throw them to hit people. Some of my favorite moments involve hitting a character across the screen until they are flung far off the arena, and from all the way on the opposite side flinging an item and timing it just right so it hits them when they're trying to jump/float back. Makes me chuckle thinking about it. The problem with tiers is that they discount alot of stuff, such as items, banned stages, etc. With items on, Mewtwo becomes one of the best characters. The tiers are good to have only if you feel like you absolutely have to quantify the performance of certain characters under "tournament" conditions, which is not how most people play.
  22. No, it's actually bullshit for an entirely different reason. They are pretty much 100% correct in saying that the characters are tiered. The problem is that they adhere to this. The game is meant to be played for fun, fuck the smashboards level of dedication. Amen The beauty of SSBM is that it's a highly accessable, enjoyable experience for anyone, but at the same time there are enough quirks and secrets to it that it can also be a pretty serious tournament-level game. It's not one or the other, it's both, and that's what makes it so great.
  23. Why don't you give it a shot? About 80% of making avatars is cropping/resizing, so you're pretty much asking someone to do all the work for you. Because I will ruin them. Image editing is something I have no aptitude for. I'm more than willing to do the work, but it does no one any good if they're unuseable.
  24. I've got a ton of Fire Emblem sprites, but they're all too big. Would anyone want to try resizing them? The biggest one is 96 by 80 pixels.
