  1. if you want, i discuss this in my computer faq that's linked in my signature. it's still in 'beta' phase, since i haven't proofread it yet, but it should discuss a little about what you're talking about. edit: never trust cisco techs. i had one tell me a while ago he stuck a sun sparc processor - think thousands of dollars, 16 cores with multithreading - in a desktop and it was good and all. something in me doubts that highly, considering that you can't buy them piecemeal and the servers they come in cost like $7k.
  2. theoretically, it'll give you more ram to use, but xp and vista don't really support it. so it's kinda useless.
  3. you're welcome, jg. i posted that simply because you gave very wrong info not only here but in another thread that was asking about the same question. one time i'd have let slide, but when i saw both i figured i'd, uh, let you know. what you also forgot about is that 4 gigs of good ddr2 800 memory is 41$ shipped at newegg right now. upgrading for 4 gigs isn't a big deal, but it's cheaper than any other upgrade to do to your system (besides adding a dvd-burner), and THAT makes 64-bit computing worth the time. plus, if more of us do it, more people will start writing for it...and then it'll become more mainstream. and, when you're working on huge music files, that last 800 megs actually can be the difference between bluescreening and being able to work on your song. particularly if you're running several instances of large, ram-heavy programs.
  4. sold! to the lurker in cali. is that right now, kanthos?
  5. i was going to post here and make fun of you for liking jpop, but that song is really great. good work, man!
  6. i guess i'm just frustrated because there's no real reason for doing this. it'd be like having landline phone companies start charging per call once you're over a minimal limit - it's just not feasible. the 25% of people that are on the bottom end are all grandparents who check their email for pictures of their grandkids, not REAL consumers of internet functionality. this doesn't limit piracy or anything like that. it just bones people who are trying to use the net like it's meant to be used. i just can't see any way that this actually benefits time warner.
  7. and with that, bahamut saves the day. check your permalinks in the first post, people - if it was going to a specific numbered post in this thread, make sure it's still going there. he deleted twelve posts to make it work, so all the permalinks are screwed up. if yours is messed up, post what it should be and i'll fix it.
  8. whoa, i never heard anything about this. do you know if they're planning to expand this to other sectors of NY? specifically, CNY? there's no one else besides time warner out here at a decent price, and if they pull this i know that i'll be screwed. between streaming videos and legal bittorrent downloads, i'm well over 40g a WEEK, let alone per month.
  9. oh, hey, i keep getting your IMs but you're not around when i am. sure thing, just contact me tuesday night. sorry about the delay, again.
  10. i read somewhere that some of the newer games could use the hard drive in a PS2's expansion bay to significantly reduce loading times. is this true? specifically, i'm talking about GOW1 and 2, FFX, FFXII, KH1, KH2, and shadow of the colossus.
  11. i believe he's talking about the 'digital out' settings. does that change the image? the y cb thing just means that you're using true component cables, last time i checked. RGB is for VGA cables with an adapter, or scart input with PAL systems. i was wondering this, too, i just bought a ps2 a little while ago. edit: what game was it? there are a lot of ps2 games that didn't use AA, thus rendering the visuals to look like ass on a tv that doesn't blur everything together.
  12. uh, bump? i've had a few systems to do lately, but not much of anything. been a little quiet, what with the economy being where it is.
  13. i've been trying to figure out a way to get a second post in there. that's a good idea. i'll pm some mods.
  14. the camera is there because webcams are popular among nintendo's handheld 'audience' - tweens.
  15. again, just like the last 64-bit OS question, you're completely wrong. no 32-bit computer can actually access all 4 gigs due to video ram and addressing problems within the x86 architecture. do you really do system troubleshooting? i'd be surprised since you really don't know what you're talking about beyond the 'lol i use computers' phase.
  16. uh, no it doesn't, man. what you just wrote is completely wrong.
  17. so, whatcha all think about the DSi? just curious. i'm a sony handheld kind of guy. but it's cool looking. makes me wonder where the psp2 is.
  18. i saw this on slashdot and hack a day, and thought it was awesome. cute robot, too =)
  19. just picked up shadow of the colossus and okami. man, i can't wait to dig into some of these!
  20. this movie looks excellent. i'm looking forward to it now.
  21. i don't know if anyone here visits this, but lifehacker generally has a 'featured desktop' article occasionally. search the tags. they always tell how to do it. there's some really awesome ones, and they're invariablely all done using free programs like rainlendar, rainmeter 2, speedfan, and cd art display.
