  1. That would require me to have friends who go to the U.

    Which I don't. :P

And they know all my friends, so it's pointless to lie :P

    Where do you live, exactly?

On a separate note, I might have some interest in attending a Twin Cities get together, schedule permitting, but because of work and family (ten month old baby), I can't really do anything geographically beyond that.

  2. What? No MoA? That's almost a requirement in you're visiting the Twin Cities area. Though since this is where I'm from, it's not all that exciting honestly.

Yeah, the Mall isn't anything special if you actually live around here.

The Twin Cities themselves aren't anything spectacular, especially in the winter/early spring, but if you wanted to wait until May and you could arrange a boat ride on Lake Minnetonka, that would be a lot of fun for people.

  3. Okay, so a guy who is currently indicted for copyright infringement in the U.S. (and who is currently living in the U.K. and the U.S. is seeking extradition for) is telling everyone else in the U.S. and the U.K. to freak out that the U.S. is going to do the same thing to them.

This guy is just trying to push his own agenda by fear-mongering.

What he says is going to happen is not actually going happen, and for several reasons.

Legally, it is difficult to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that a user who has downloaded one or a couple of copyrighted works off of MegaUpload actually did so intentionally (the required mindset under the criminal statute). It's too hard to track IP addresses to a single individual at times.

Practically, it would be impossible for the Justice Department to go after every single person whose ever downloaded a copyrighted work off of MegaUpload. There are millions of them. I could see them possibly trying to go after some of the worst offenders, but, it would be too hard to track those people down, and even if it weren't, the above legal complications may prove too burdensome.

Politically, there's no way the Justice Department would do it. I mean, seriously, the political fallout from the Jamie Thomas incident was bad enough. Do you have any idea how badly would Obama lose if he actually, as this Chicken Little is claiming, went after every single user who has ever downloaded something from MegaUpload?

It's just not going to happen.

It is disturbing that the Justice Department has those servers, but honestly, I find it highly, highly unlikely that they are going to do anything with it.

This guy has his own interests he's trying to push, and that's why he's trying to make everyone else afraid.

  4. Even worse music has to be tailor-made for young girls, including Hannah Montana, The Jonas Brothers, High School Musical, and Justin Bieber...

To me, a big part of the decline in music is because media conglomerates are producing "music" to specifically cater to a narrow demographic to increase sales in other areas (clothes, DVDs, random plastic crap, etc).

That, and I guess things like American Idol (or Pop Idol to you Brits) have made music about making money (i.e. through advertising) rather than letting bands and artists make music as an actual form of expression. Thus, the homogeneity of today's music.

If corporations backed off and actually let musicians do their thing, the quality of music would definitely increase.

  5. http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02237/ (WillRock's mixes are just awesome for working out)

    Quoted for truth.

Showdown really gives me an energy infusion at the end of my runs.

Also, check out some of WillRock's unposted stuff from the GRMRB 2010 and 2011, and GMRB 2010. DarkeSword has an archive of them in this post.

I recommend a few in particular:

    Time Stopper

    Countdown To Infinity

    Bleets Of Lightning

    Pull The Plug

EDIT: I should also mention TheGuitahHeroe's song from the first round of GRMRB 2011 "Blowin'em Outta the Water"

  6. You mean the literal THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of doujin Touhou arrange albums coming out of Japan every day doesn't do anything for you? :-P

(I agree it would be cool to see some more Touhou stuff on OCR, though.)

Seriously, Touhou seems to be the subject of 80% of all Japanese doujin albums. Why settle for two or three OCR remixes when there are literally hundreds of Touhou songs on Japanese doujin albums? Check out www.vgmdb.net for more

  7. I'm very curious as to where they are coming up with this $500 million in lost profits figure. No way all of those people who downloaded the files were actually going to go see it in theater or buy it. As far as I'm concerned, they pulled that number out of thin air.

EDIT: I'm going through the indictment right now. I just came across this little tidbit and was very amused...

"In exchange for payment, the Mega Conspiracy provides the fast reproduction and distribution of infringing copies of copyrighted works from its computer servers located around the world."

Um...whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

  8. The internet is filled with misinformation about both bills, much of it inadvertant, some of it deliberate (as with any legislation). A lot of this misinformation could be remedied simply by reading the bills (H.R. 3261 and S.968 ). Not all of it, of course. Legislation can be difficult for even lawyers and Congressmen to understand — and copyright law is an especially difficult subject to grasp.

Oh yeah... pretty much the defense of anybody trying to hide something. Really, that link is pretty much garbage, when it comes to supporting SOPA and PIPA.

Copyright law is pretty much the easiest of all of the IP cousins (patents, trademarks, trade secrets) to understand. It really isn't that hard to understand, either.

Of course, the point his saying that was to pretend that he understood how SOPA's opponents could misunderstand the bill. Smarmy asshole. I really hate it when people twist the facts and pretend their version of reality is so plainly obvious that anyone who doesn't see it their way is stupid.

Also, don't put lawyers on the same level as Congressmen as far as intellectual capacity. Even Congresspeople and Senators that were originally lawyers undergo a massive lobotomy before they assume office.

  9. Not necessarily - I can see that backfiring on their businesses. I think them being up serves a good purpose actually, since it leaves it up to friends to educate each other about the issue, and that is often more influential.

I wasn't necessarily saying if they blacked out, but if they had a banner at the top of the page talking about SOPA/PIPA and why it's bad, then Hell would really rain down on Congress.

On the other hand, I can understand its decision not to. They have a lot of power by directly reaching out to users. It's important that they only use it in the most dire of circumstances so as not to hurt their business model (as you mentioned), and so that the option remains an effective one.

  10. You know what would be good? If all of these sites stayed down until SOPA dies. THAT would really draw attention.

If Facebook and Twitter did ANYTHING, then it would spell the end of SOPA/PIPA.

[in response to the White House announcing it "will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet"]

“I welcome today’s announcement that the White House will support legislation to combat online piracy that protects free speech, the Internet and America’s intellectual property," Smith said, according to The Hill. "That’s precisely what the Stop Online Piracy Act does."

Lamar Smith is a grade-A douche voluntarily putting his head up his own ass.

  11. Or just use noscript for firefox, it'll bypass it.

The easiest thing is to just disable Javascript in your browser.

    EDIT:

    http://choochoobear.tumblr.com/post/16047028443/sopa-lives-and-mpaa-calls-protests-an-abuse-of-power

Some of the strongest hypocrisy I've ever read, if I were trapped in a room with these people I'm not sure I could restrain myself from projectile vomiting every time they attempt to speak. I'd like to say that I'm boycotting them over this but I'm not a big film guy to begin with, it's already been a year or two since I've bought a movie anyway.

I hope the Hollywood douches now realize that they've awakened a sleeping giant, and now they can't pull crap like this ever again. People love their internetz

  12. I just got an email this morning in response to signing the White House petition against SOPA and PIPA. It can be viewed here:

    https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#/!/response/combating-online-piracy-while-protecting-open-and-innovative-internet

    Here's the good part:

We must avoid creating new cybersecurity risks or disrupting the underlying architecture of the Internet. Proposed laws must not tamper with the technical architecture of the Internet through manipulation of the Domain Name System (DNS), a foundation of Internet security. Our analysis of the DNS filtering provisions in some proposed legislation suggests that they pose a real risk to cybersecurity and yet leave contraband goods and services accessible online. We must avoid legislation that drives users to dangerous, unreliable DNS servers and puts next-generation security policies, such as the deployment of DNSSEC, at risk.

  13. OH WAIT...I had an amazing idea for all us bored people! It's totally original and is in no way, shape, or form ripping off DarkeSword.

We should totally take this next week or so and find us each a robot master from the Mega Man series of games, then have each person do a remix with that theme as well as a Wily castle theme. Any takers?

I'm no remixer, but I heartily endorse this option!!

  14. Eh, I felt for the most part that MM6 had a very accessible score (moreso than MM3's robot masters in general imo) and fitted the general scope for the series significantly more than 5 and even 8. Maybe aide from Centaur Man and Knight Man I felt they had a great ability to sink into your mind in regards to structure and made them worthwhile to re-arrange, and I felt that Yamato Man was like the crown jewel of the game for me.

Alas, I picked Plant Man from that game mostly for two reasons: simple structure (24 measures split into distinct sections) and the fact that there's no coverage on OCR yet (though I am aware of Vurez's "Amazonian Flower", thank you very much). Even then, I'm sure that between the five of us who represented that game (me, Geoff, Jason, Lidawg and Nuts) we've managed to come out with something really solid for that game's coverage :)

I agree that MM6 has a pretty accessible score. I actually would rank it in the top half or third of all MM soundtracks. The robot master themes are all pretty solid, but the best part of the soundtrack is Mr. X's Fortress.

  15. Yeah I'm listening to the Mega Man 4 complete works OST and it is amazing. I rank MM4 as having one of the best OSTs of all time. Cossack fortress songs 1 and 2 are just ridiculously amazing.

MM4 music is definitely one of the best, but it does seem to be a bit underrepresented in these compos.

AeroZ took Toad Man in GRMRB 2011, and prophetik has Dust Man and LuketheXJesse has Skull Man in WCRG 2011, but that's it. Three robot masters over the course of three compos.

On the subject of Tengu man... I like both of his theme versions just about equally though the Saturn version represents Tengu Man a bit better than the upbeat chipper PSX version.

    Agreed.

I was thinking it would be fun for the next robot master competition that instead of everyone picking the same RMs, everyone picks a robot master that hasn't been picked yet. Like...exclude all the RMs from this competition. That way we'd have a whole bunch of new sounds goin around. I noticed a lot of remixers picked RMs they picked before in previous battles. That is no fun.

    Go go Clown Man.

At the start of GRMRB 2011, Darke encouraged people to pick robot masters that were absent last year. Some did, some didn't. Hopefully, more people do in 2012.

  16. I'm listening to some youtube Robot Master remixes and I'm now realizing that there were a lot of good robot masters that weren't chosen.

Off the top of my head I can say:

    Quick Man

    Bright Man

    Dive Man

    Burst Man

    Cloud Man

    Tengu Man

Each of the ones I listed have amazing themes.

    Quoted for truth.

I'm really surprised more people don't do Quick Man and Bright Man. Bright Man's probably ignored because he looks like a fat, bald guy.

Also, a lot of people were actively pushing for someone to pick Tengu Man's theme from the Sega Saturn version earlier on. Was pretty close to having Jewbei pick it, but then DarkeSword changed up the way he selected robot masters and he did it randomly. So no Tengu Man.

By the way, you should go vote in the social group!

    EDIT:

You are butt poppers who smell like butt poop. Magfest is awesome. Why aren't you guys vandalizing this thread while Shariq is gone?

    Butt poop

Cuz the posts don't disappear when he comes back, and I'm nearing critical mass for how much I can take emoticons being thrown at me.
