OCR01062 - Xenogears "Live from the Yggdrasil"
Less Ashamed Of Self replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I realized after a little while that not putting my 2 cents here would be a crime to such an amazing mix. While, after a LOT of listening there's the odd thing I could see that would improve, (picky things that would probably just put my spin on it instead of yours) this is still an astounding piece of brilliant piano jazz. It's a great take on the original piece and a huge compliment to the original composer. This track in particular carries special memories for me from this past summer of 2004. I would drive into night shift with my OCR cd cranked (two luxuries that were new to me) and would sing along... I know that would ruin it in any jazz club, but I pretty much memorized the whole thing by ear. It was just me, the night sky, the responsibility of the car, the wet windshield, and the smooth smooth mood-setting piano. The live piano recording sounds infinitely better than the highest quality soundfont... Gorgeous. As a greedy fan I demand more like it... but take you're time... give me 10/10's, not that should be too hard for your blessed fingers. JJT, I salute. -
OCR01268 - Suikoden "Cliff the Great Crusader"

Very nice... this put you on the map for me Trenthian... and here I thought you just hosted bad remix competitions. Yeah, solid, love the feel... LOVES the recorder (you've got some great texture with the tongue there... ew...) All around solid. The kind of piece you'd play for someone to demonstrate the creativity of the remixers around here. -
I don't know the piece but Shabablubahabwhateveryournameis... Nice, freaking mint. It's a very very technical piece, instantly a favourite of mine, gorgeous, catchy, and fun. I look forward to memorizing it as I did other thick IDM greats like Aphex Twin's 54 Cymru Beats or Squarepusher's Boneville Occident. 10/10, possibley my all-time favourite though I need to hear it a lot more.

OCR00178 - Final Fantasy VI "Relm's Weepy Loop"

I thought about this track while washing dishes at subway and it brought a tear to my eye. That's a powerful track. -
Right on bro, nice work. Congrats on the hosting. It really is a nice little remix. (I liked it when I first heard it, ) I was pained to see the words 'newcomer' in the intro though... I knew djp would use it, and to the OCR hosting world it's true, but I think he uses it too liberally. I mean you've been around for a year of PRC's right? Hardly new. Oh well, I'm over it. I suppose I'll get similar treatment when I get hosted.

Big Ziwtra fan: no exceptions here. A deliciously loungy little genre defying piece. This song is best described with one adjective: pleasant. It's my choice adjective for a song next to sick. If only I still had my minidisc player, I'd go take this song with me to the prettiest park and watch the snow fall or something like that. Nice.

Kirby's Adventure: Rise of the Star - History

Crazy... I don't know how some stuff is popular while other stuff isn't around here. I'm not complaining, more power to everything... just... wow. Good luck everyone, too bad I didn't audition when I could've. -

What are the guidelines for this? Just mix a song from Kirby Adventure & Post? I've been meaning to do one from the Orange Ocean world-map for a while now. Any genre preferences? -
I really didn't like this tune at first. Then it started to grow on me... now I can't see it out of my collection; it demands that you enter a certain place & mood. At first I thought I knew what you were going for and that you missed your mark entirely: a nice ambient techno of sorts that, for me, has too 'saw'-y a lead to have the original tender sensitivity. Then I gave it a chance, and it became something a little more, the drum effects are inescapably not dancy, and that's precisely the point of them... they are like a marker, a direction for the flow, a bank to your river, and they are used more effectively than I originally gave them credit for. While not perfect, and still a little loud and 'saw'y for my tastes (considering the gentleness of the original), it is a very solid piece. It's different, I like that. It's like a hug from someone that smells just a little more pungently than you'd prefer. I'd like to see more like it. 8.5/10

OCR00186 - Maniac Mansion "[go w*ld]"
Less Ashamed Of Self replied to m68030's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Man... older songs had a different standard. It cuts off suddenly at the end and nobody pays it any attention. Amazing song, 9/10... but I'm adding an ending... Jerks... -
Not true... but alright... Yay TO! Yay PRC! Yay OCR! YAY LETTERS! I really do like this mix, it's very fluid and enjoyable. The guitar though, IMO, while amazing in sound quality and technique, is very loud. I would have mixed it differently. But stil, not at all bad... that was a good PRC too, everyone should check the other entrances out. 8.5/10

Why don't you make it a 'requirement'/guideline that people search vgmusic.com and/or elsewhere for midi's to link to... I mean if you don't know the game's system or the song then it's impossible to judge whether you agree or not. You're still liable to get n00b after n00b who won't read any notice you post, but I, for one, am tired of seeing linkless posts that I might agree with.

I say we find everyone who thinks this mix is below average and punch them in the nuts. This track is so full, so rockin, and so killer that it demands our attention... no OCR compilation would be complete without it. I'm not familiar with the original, but I'd be surprised if there isn't a fan out there that isn't floored by this track. Most delicious part: the bass at 2:20 then the drums that come back by 2:22... *drool* 9.9999999/10 just because I can hear some things that bug me ever so slightly. -

Coo, thanks for the quick draw replies Xelebes... I appreciate your knowledge base... and musical tastes and location for that matter... Huge pitch-bender slider VST? Anyone? Anyone? -

I suppose I do mean a lofi effect *smacks head* , but one I could automate; from hifi-lofi... and by ends I just mean the two extremes of the slider. -

K, I'm looking for two types of VST's maybe you can help me... small full software apps good too... (I've given KVR a brief look) 1-A pitch control slider capable of several octaves in either direction. 2-(and I'm not sure if this is even possible...)a slider control with a 44100 sample rate at one end and a 6000 or so one at the other... that would likely be a simulation, but from high quality to low quality... you know what I mean right? -
Wow, while not entirely always in perfect harmony, this song shows great skill and incredible musical talent. At times it reminds me of the kind of 'free jazz' stuff I would only lend a patient ear too, but then throughout the mix you can hear that you kept very true to the original track giving it a great new flavour! A vast improvement on the original, and while not for everybody, should be enjoyed by everyone who isn't musically closed minded. Nice stuff Neskavartten; glad to see you're letting yourself run in more untame variations as well.

OCR00786 - Mega Man 2 "Teardrinker"
Less Ashamed Of Self replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It's very disonant, and that wasn't what you should've been going for with this mix. I don't know man, could've been much better. Nice ideas, even a nice final mood, but I'm with everyone else here... it's kind of like listening to two songs at once, nice if it's abstract art music... bad if it's wingless. I like all your other stuff though.
