The thing is, when there's a map switch and you have over 10 people downloading it at once, it's a server killer.
There's a fix for that: Redirect the players to another (http) server to download files.

[14:15] <+Tensei-San> http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/
If this is true (that's the official site), it looks like cp_steel is going to become a standard map!
Ooh, more updates later this week, too...
-
This map looks pretty amazing, BTW:
...a CTF TC map? wtf!
-
Last night when I played (sadly, not on OCR), I was kicking some serious ass as spy.
Sometime I rock as a spy, sometimes I suck as a spy... it's all in the luck for me (and the level; I suck as Spy on hydro).
-
if someone knows how to convert html to motd.txt then I can just whip up an html doc for it if you want.
It's really easy: Just put HTML into motd.txt... no conversion required.
P.S. Whoops, I was wrong earlier. The server browser is showing no one on the OCR TF2 server right now.
However, since the Steam Friends list is down right now, I'm not betting that the server browser is working right now either.

Good question - the server came with both preinstalled I think, but I could be wrong.
The only thing I can think of that might still use it is the server's ads, and Sourcemod has an Advertisements plugin.
Well, you could try disabling it and see if everything still works. I don't know if you'd need to do anything special other than commenting it out in /addons/metamod/metaplugins.ini (by putting a ; at the beginning of the mani line).
Assuming that Mani is loaded as a Metamod: Source plugin, that is.

So tomorrow I will look into some things. Some people like zircon complained of lag, although I never got any of it - everything ran as smooth as butter on this comp, although TF2 has a habit of crashing due to me being on Vista 64-bit. Also there was a bit of wtf when pl_dustbowl_b4 won the map vote, but it got switched to cp_well...I think I know what happened, so I will look into that tomorrow too.
I will add Rainwave to the radio list tomorrow, as tonight I'm honestly pretty tired from my traveling back to Illini territory.
Does anyone have map rotation suggestions or a custom map desired to play?
To be honest, I'm surprised you still have both ManiAdmin and SourceMod running.
Is there anything in ManiAdmin that you still need?

All-talk+ OCR regulars+ Well_B4+ Melee only= massive fun.
I don't know about everyone else, but I don't care for Alltalk... it makes it so you can't discuss strategy via voice.
Not that we do all that often, but sometimes we do.
Also... Well_B4? I don't remember that one. Is it based on ctf_well or cp_well?
-
I would just start an empty server to get the hang of the classes and some maps, then hop on the OCR server when there's like 4 or so people and mess around with them.
Also I don't mind dustbowl being in the rotation 3 times. I feel safe on that map...
I haven't seen the OCR server down to less than 6 people in days.
-
So I'm planning on buying TF2 soon but I'd like to know if there are any bots for this game. I hate practicing online.
As far as I know, no.
However, you can always hop on an achievement server for practice... they tend to be lower-player servers for grinding achievements... mainly Pyro achievements right now.
Speaking of which, Pyro recently became my least played class after I played Demoman for a bit the other day.
-
Well, I'm not sure how you set up the server stuff, how did you get the whole "Welcome to OCR...No sticky camping...etc." page up? Is there just a text box to write in? did you have to make an html page? I can code basic html and have embedded media players before, but I'm sure someone else would be more capable, we do have website designers around here don't we?That particular page you're asking about is just motd.txt on the server.
As strange as it sounds, motd.txt can be an HTML document.
-
Ok seriously, cave is awesome. Keep it in the rotation.
Speaking of Cave, the download link on page 1 goes to pl_cave_b6, not pl_cave_b4_2.
I assume it's a newer version of the same map.

Warning: Really long post
Controls:
In addition to the normal WASD layout:
, to change class
. to change team
E calls for a Medic
R reloads
Q switches between your current and previous weapons
Z, X, and C opens voice command menus
V (hold) to voice chat
l to drop briefcase in CTF maps
g to taunt (each weapon has a different taunt, except for the Spy's Sapper... the Spy Disguise kit has one instead)
m to edit your character's weapons if you've unlocked any Medic or Pyro weapons through achievements
TAB to check scores... also lists what classes your teammates are using and whether or not they're dead. Also lists who you're dominating or who is your nemesis (i.e. is dominating you)
SPACE to jump
CTRL to crouch
Y to text chat
U to team text chat
B (Spy only) to switch to your last used disguise
Oh yeah, quick overview of the classes:
Scout
Advantages
2x Speed
2x Capture speed
Double Jump
Disadvantages
Low-clip primary weapon
Primary weapon loses power at a distance
Soldier
Advantages
Primary weapon does lots of damage
Primary weapon does splash damage
Primary weapon can be used to rocket jump to areas you (and any other class) can't otherwise reach
Disadvantages
.75x Speed
Low-clip primary weapon
Easily dodged primary weapon
Can kill self with rocket splash damage
Pyro
Advantages
Primary weapon does lots of damage
Primary weapon sets enemies on fire, causing another 50-100 damage
Resistant to fire
Can reflect rockets with air blast
Disadvantages
Primary weapon is only primary short-range
Primary weapon doesn't work underwater
Secondary (long range) weapon kinda sucks
Demoman
Advantages
Primary and secondary weapons are strong
Secondary weapon (Sticky Bomb) can have 8 on the map; they explode when you right-click. These go away when you die
Secondary weapon can let you bomb jump to areas you normally can't reach
Disadvantages
Primary and secondary weapons are slow.
Primary weapon is hard to aim
Bomb jump is not as powerful as rocket jump
Heavy
Advantages
Primary weapon does lots of damage
Has lots of hit points
Disadvantages
.75x speed
.25x speed when primary weapon is firing.
Primary weapon takes time to spin up (hold right mouse button to keep barrel spinning)
Engineer
Advantages
Can build a sentry gun, dispenser (dispenses ammo/metal and heals nearby allies), and teleport entrance/exit
Can upgrade sentry guns twice for 200 metal each time, spent in increments of 25 or less; it takes at least 8 wrench hits to upgrade a sentry gun.
Hitting engineer structures with your wrench will repair them if you have metal. This also applies to upgrading and reloading sentry guns
Disadvantages
Relatively weak offensive power.
Spies can sap your buildings. A sapped building immediately stops working and starts taking damage. Two wrench hits will destroy a sapper.
Medic
Advantages
Secondary weapon can heal other players
When secondary weapon is charged, right-click to unleash a special effect: ubercharge (the default) causes you and the person you're healing to go invincible for 10 seconds.
Disadvantages
Relatively weak offensive power.
Relatively low health.
Sniper
Advantages
Primary weapon has a zoom. While zoomed in, a power meter appears. If you shoot someone in the head while this meter is full, it's always an instant kill.
Primary weapon does a lot of damage while zoomed in, even if you haven't let the power level charge.
Can take out engineer buildings at a distance, although it may take a few shots.
Secondary weapon is a fast firing weapon, possibly the best secondary weapon in the game other than the Medic's medigun.
Disadvantages
You move slower while zoomed in. This makes you easy to kill.
Spy
Advantages
Can disguise as enemy.
Can cloak for 10 seconds or so.
While visible, can sap enemy engineer structures. These structures immediately stop working and start taking damage. You stay disguised after placing sappers.
Your tertiary weapon (Butterfly Knife) is an instant kill if done from behind or at the sides.
Can call for enemy medics.
Disadvantages
Running into enemy players while cloaked with make you visible for a second.
Getting shot while cloaked makes you visible for a second.
Running into enemies while disguised will stop movement for both of you.
If you are hit with a pyro flamethrower, the flames will show up even if you cloak.
Cannot use weapons until you completely decloak.
Using a weapon other than the Sapper will remove your disguise.

id imagine that you saw this already but
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1456-EUDN-2493
Gotta love how they list every major anti-virus on the Programs Which Interfere with Steam page.

BTW, does Steam or TF2 conflict with Vista?
I use it under Vista with no problems (other than TF2 bringing up the crash dialog on exit).
-
I just bought TF2.
Would OCR let me play until I learn the basics, and after that?
I can't imagine anyone objecting. Well, not too loudly.
-
Except that nobody ever does this. You can set up a smartly placed sentry and a dispenser right around the edge of the grain silo on the second point, first stage of dustbowl and dominate an entire team. And by chance it does get destroyed, your dispenser is still there to help you build another. The only real problem are spies, and usually a friendly pyro or engie critwrench takes care of those (or they let themselves be known by taking out the snipers that are usually around in the back).
A spy taking out a Sniper when there's a perfectly good sentry to gank?!
And they call themselves spies?!
Pssh....
Actually, I do stuff like that if (and this is a big if) I think the Sniper is out of the sentry's range or the sentry is too well guarded for me to reach it (yes, this means that it'll probably kill me before I can recloak).
P.S. Despite playing Spy a lot lately, I still have 3 more hours clocked as Medic at this time. So, when people say "We need more medics" I'm loathe to switch to Medic because it doesn't really interest me that much, even though I'm (IMHO) good at it.
-
Hmm, usually the server is full by this time of day, but there's only 9 people on right now... does everyone hate ctf_well or something?
-
I think the Demoman is pretty powerful, definitely can seem cheap. I don't think the Soldier is though - he's quite slow.
All the classes are pretty powerful in their own way, but they all have their weaknesses, too.
Here are their weaknesses, starting from the left (I play Spy a lot, so I have the order memorized):
1. Scout's primary gun sucks at range and only holds a few shots.
2. Soldier's primary weapon is quite slow and can rarely be used in short range combat without killing oneself.
3. Pyro's long range sucks.
4. Demoman has an abysmally slow rate of fire.
5. Heavies don't do that good of damage at distance and it takes time for their gun to come up to speed... they can keep their gun spinning, but their movement is slowed even further.
6. Engineers have a weak offense power. Their sentry guns are also rather stupid... plus they stop shooting while sapped.
7. Medics don't have a lot of health or offense.
8. Snipers have to be zoomed in for a few seconds before their shots work that well. They also have limited movement while zoomed in). The zoom resets after each shot, too.
9. Spies can be detected fairly easily by shooting at allies, or by trying to run through them. Cloaked spies also show up for a second when they run into someone or take damage.

There, I finally got tired of not being able to get on during peak hours and signed up for a reserve slot.
-
Only problem is that it seems in order to give that privilege, I have to give the kick option, which I definitely don't want to give arbitrarily.
You can override that.
Also, I assume that "vote, kick" in the list means that anyone with vote or kick can use said command, because there doesn't seem to be any way to require multiple flags for commands. Although I could be wrong.
-
I fixed the mods - turns out Gameservers didn't update their Metamod: Source installation link.
Ah, OK... I thought that might be it, but I didn't realize Gameservers had their own link to it (I just assumed you could upload the new .dll/.so to addons/metamod/bin/).
-
Nope. If you play Pyro enough, you know how to line up that backburner kill to make it nearly as quick as a Spy's backstab.
I can't say I'm thrilled about nerfing the HP, but Backburner is still a beastly weapon.
I've been playing around with the setup on my (now defunct) server, and it crashes if certain plugins are loaded when the server starts, most notably the Oil Metamod plugin.
I'd recommend disabling various other mods to see if you can isolate which one is causing the problem.
Edit: The TF2 server seems to be up again now.
-
On a loosely related subject, the Backburner lost its health bonus. 'bout freaking time.
If anything, it should have a health loss to balance it against the normal Pyro flamethrower, since it's more powerful.

Given that at least two of the Heavy's achievements involve the cart, I'm not surprised to see another Payload map.
