  1. Sound and composition are very unique. Not just by themselves but to people as well. Heck I used to know someone that thought they heard bells on the radio when actually it was a piano. The part about bringing a concept of a song is interesting because depending on who hears it you might get someone who's looking for a sound or looking for a melody. Like I had a job doing a techno kind of Touhou piece and made a bid with a concept I made pretty quickly with soundfonts and they loved it, when I completed the song with all the proper production they were blown away and actually tipped me. Another time I made a piece for someone with some SNES sounds to demonstrate what I wanted to do and they weren't particular too into it, then I did it up fully orchestrated and they were again blown away by it. So I'd say there's people who don't particularly mind what you write as long as it sounds amazing and there's people who are looking for particular writing despite the quality (although people sure do appreciate the quality).

I wouldn't say technology hurts music it just makes many more paths and decisions. But I do think in some cases when you're composing a song or creating a melody you are doing it for the sound. Like if Inon Zur auditioned to do the music for Fallout 3 with concepts done on a piano it would not be as interesting at all until it was fleshed out with orchestra, that's what make it more special (although I cannot remember a single piece of music from that game). But if the developer's said "hey were really keen on there being a lot of piano but we want it to express the lonely and desolate atmosphere" then he probably would have gone about that decision with more creativity due to the limitation. I don't know why I picked Fallout 3 it's probably because I can't recall any of Inon Zur's music at all.

Personally I think the best music comes from a place where you're not thinking of sounds or technology, but you know the feeling, the movement...you know what it is meant to do. There will always be more and more pressure as music evolves but I will always appreciate those that can forget about it and just make something real.

  2. That was the oldest version of that mix. I submitted and resubmitted new versions but there were mixed decisions between some of the arrangement and the production. I get the criticism now and could fix it up...maybe I should? I don't know. It's been a long time.

The remixes in this soundtrack are too short and would not pass for a variety of reasons, they're also quite short.

    Thanks for checking it out!

  3. Chrono Crisis Soundtrack - 328MB, 96 Tracks, 4 hours of music.

Many years ago a small team of us were working on a fan sequel to Chrono Trigger which was sadly discontinued for several reasons between the team. We learned a lot from the process and it pushed us in new directions. Our new team is working on something else now but we have been keeping it in the dark for some time and do not intend to publicly address it officially until a later date.

Chrono Crisis didn't manage to get far in terms of completion but a few of us had a lot of fun doing our parts. This soundtrack is not completed but I do not intend to add or work on it further. In retrospect it wasn't as well thought out as it should have been for its size and because of the setting and characters it probably doesn't sound much like the Chrono games. There are some Chrono remixes however. It has been sitting on my hard drive for a long time and I figured I'd upload it for anyone that is interested in hearing it.

This was about 6 years ago so the quality is no where near my current standards but I think there's much to enjoy. Anyone interested in what happened with the project can find some information here: http://chrono.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Chrono_Crisis I'm sure if you google it you'll find out some more.

  4. I was trying to think of a way to be tactful about the cover art, but decided to just praise the music instead.

so, good job, this is pretty sweet!

Haha maybe the whole cover is a bit intense, I want to dabble more in art so I wholly welcome criticism and input.

Thanks for the response guys I'm getting some great feedback :)

    Indomitable Souls

'Only the strongest survive. Indomitable Souls is for the gamers that thrive on an epic song in the most adrenaline fueled challenges they are faced with. Orchestral and electronic music collide with chiptune for an action rollercoaster like no other!

Inspired by many of my favourite soundtracks including Batman Arkham City, Castlevania, Final Fantasy and many more. This is my tribute to the music that blurs the line between being a controller and being a hero.'

Been working on this since January and now it's finally ready to join music March. With a pay what you want option you can get it for free but if you like it enough, feel free to pass me something your way! If you think it's really good please pass it around to your friends or people you think would like it. Really hope you guys enjoy it I had a blast making it!

Shnabubula has kindly done a piano arrangement for the album too based on one of the tracks which was really kind of him, check it out and obviously check his bandcamp too http://shnabubula.bandcamp.com/

  6. I was thirsty and came to this album, now I have bladder problems!

I love 'Liquid Metal'...I even prefer the vocal version! It's so fun. Reminds me of mixes I loved from here and vgmix years ago. Fish!

'Sweet Wet Nectar' sounds like a good old Sonic tune which I appreciate, love that nostalgic feeling.

Good fun this, those 2 were my favourites. If I get the 40th post I'd tell you to do another one of these ;).

  7. Again with the assumption of bad faith. All this hostility directed at OCR when you have pretty much the entire staff saying that we DON'T hate chiptunes, we ARE willing to reconsider decisions and we WANT folks like Sam to keep subbing their stuff. It's like you guys are desperately looking to create drama where there just isn't any to begin with. We don't sit in some dark room plotting about how to destroy chiptune music and reject submissions. I have FX4 queued up as we speak.

Yknow Z I appreciate that you're responding to everyone like it is your duty but you're not a judge anymore. If you're just going to respond to the most negative part of my post of course it's going to look like drama. I'm glad you gave a YES to Espergirl, I've known that for a long time. I'm also sorry if I upset any chip artists by calling it a genre that was a bad call!

    You're gonna love FX4 btw :)

  8. I realize for the time being this is probably too much of a concession to demand, so I don't expect it, but I understand what danimal means about 2nd class citizen. There are some relatively juvenile piano remixes that have been posted, from a technical and compositional [pianistically speaking] perspective. But for a chiptune song to pass, it has to be in the top top top 99.999999% percent of the genre.

Anyway, I know that this will not change, and I don't expect it to anytime soon. BUT I stand by the fact that it should, and will...when the times change and chiptunes are regarded with the respect they deserve on a universal level.

Being serious now. I do feel that this is a very clear and concise opinion on the state of expectations. To add on the comment of piano arrangements with simpler arrangements and less skill required to perform them, those are obviously viewed more artistically in how they speak to the listener. A fair few of them were even commented on in their reviews about the poor recording quality or slight hitches in performances - but were willing to let them slide because it was felt the remix was arranged well enough and deserved to be passed. That in itself does not entirely bother me but because it is thought of so artistically it seems pretty pretentious to deny those same artistic rights regarding chiptunes and more so by refusing or unwilling to understand the sometimes complex techniques that are needed to achieve even the basic skills and production techniques that make up what is so enjoyable about chiptunes, which personally I think it pretty artistic in itself. If you use reverb for an example it's a program, a shortcut, which evidently is achievable in the composition of chiptune. It's a very capable genre which only gets better with the skill of the writer and to deny its right as an acceptable form of submission is very much the middle finger to the hard work that goes into it.

  9. Wait till I submit my gameboy remix of a gameboy song just fuck with you guys. My sound design and hugeness will be bigger than a lot of your dance tracks. Then what? http://danimalcannon.bandcamp.com/track/roots And no, other than a little limiting and EQ on a master bus, there's zero processing going on with those instruments.

Sidechaining? Fuck that shit, real men do it with envelope commands.

DSP? Fuck that I'll modulate my waveforms by cycling through manually drawn ones.

Here's my point. Chiptunes have evolved. My gameboy isn't a chintzy midi, it AN INSTRUMENT. It's A SYNTHESIZER. Fuck man, the most popular synthesizer of the 80's (DX7) had the same chip as a Genesis. To discriminate against one kind of instrument is just plain shitty.

Just for the record, reading this in a Christopher Walken voice is great.

  10. Oh god, what have I done?? O_O Does this happen all the time here?

Lol yeah pretty much mate. In short chiptunes are awesome but ocremix doesn't want them, they dare you to try but they really should say they do not accept them because you get these long opinionated arguments (which are all fair to some respect) that just open the wound. But you can use it like a gimmick which yknow is a bit like saying a song made out of pitched farts is unacceptable but if your song sounds cool with a pitched fart that's made to sound like a tuba then that's ok as long as it sounds awesome. Actually you might have better luck with a choir of farts than a chiptune, that's a big might though

  11. It means you can't just make a chiptune mix with square waves and noise, that sort of thing. Even if you make an impeccably arranged mix that is pure chiptune it won't pass...which I personally think is weird since the skill of composition can't be hidden in production and is still immensely enjoyable. But if you use it in conjunction with other produced instruments then it's ok. Yknow like techno, not a big stretch of the imagination.
