Instrumental & Vocal Skills (Other)

  1. Doom II 'Blood Bath' This is an interesting piece of music. Not half as spooky as Ghetto Lee Lewis's orchestral instrumentation for "Friday the 13th Panic at Camp Crystal" but it's got a creepy theme all the same. I love Mazedude's use of guitars and panning. The organ is definitely the main source of the creepy feel in this one, but the other instruments are definitely not lacking in that respect. I would have to say that I think this is probably Mazedude's best work here on Overclocked. Excellent work Mazedude.
  2. Friday the 13th 'Panic at Camp Crystal' Creepy! Absolutely perfect for Halloween. The use of orchestral string instruments in this song is amazing. I should have had this playing in a stereo sitting outside my front door just to freak out the kids. And then the whole song turns right around into this goofy electronic bit. Which is really amazingly well done, but what the hell?! I was really getting off on those orchestral strings. I think it would have been nicer as two different full length songs, but ah well. Excellent work Ghetto Lee Lewis.
  3. Hang-On 'Journey to the Finish' Night tight techno track, with racecar and announcer samples that seem to be obligatory in a remix of a racing game. Nothing too innovative, but enjoyable. If I had to nitpick one thing I would say that it needs a deeper bass.
  4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Ice Attack' This is some solid trance here, people. Though I don't have time to rant about the merits of it, I'll just say that it's really enjoyable. That is, if you like trance, but from past experience of the general population at OC that really shouldn't be a problem. ^^ Me likes
  5. Final Fantasy 6 'Enchanted Esper' This is one hell of an amazing mix, in part because of its length. Yeah, there are some mixes that just shouldn't be very long, but there are some that just scream at you "There should be more here!" This one on the other hand is very complete, covers all the bases and styles possible, and keeps you interested. The guitars to me, sound a bit too harsh, almost grainy. But that is all I can think to mention negatively about this excellent piece of work. Indeed, excellent work Protricity.
  6. 7th Guest 'Fat Dance' Well, can I even begin to say anything bad about this track, what with it being the original composer's own remix? Hell no! And would I want to? See previous answer. Very well produced, very professional sounding (I should hope!), and all around very, very cool. I enjoyed it even though I'm not familiar at all with the 7th Guest soundtrack. So overall, I would highly recommend this. BTW, when I get to be a major figure in the videogame industry </wishful thinking>, rest assured I'll be doing the same thing!
  7. Axelay 'Kick My Axe' People, this is one fine remix. There's not much to criticize, and so much to praise - the excellent guitar work, the way the synths are incorporated seamlessly, the well thought out arrangement, the fact that things stay interesting the entire way through.... everything here sounds like it was done by professionals. Remixes like this one don't pop up here to often, so download and enjoy them when they do.
  8. Mega Man 2 'Dr. Wily Haunts Flash Man' Maybe I just like Mega Man music, but I really enjoyed this tune. The guitar playing is neat, something I always like in a tune is a good sounding electric guitar. The synth stuff is okay, nothing new or exciting, a little too quiet maybe even. I like the guitar and drums, but sometimes it's all I can hear. See 3:06 for my example. I always liked Flash Man's theme, and you can hear it here, but it's not distinct enough for my taste. Overall though, a really cool song.
  9. Phantasy Star Online 'Lobby Static' If you've read through my reviews, you'll know that I'm not a fan of static in mixes. This song is no real exception, although there isn't an abundance of loud static in the song, which is good as far as I'm concerned. Now see, this is all personal opinion but, to me, this song sounds like it's being held back. There are some parts where it seems the song is allowed to "shine through" (examples: 0:40, 1:10) but these shining moments don't last long before the song seems to be subdued again. Once again, only my opinion, but I felt as though the song would have been much better if, at 0:40 where the song was first allowed to break through, it had stayed above the static. It just feels to me that throughout the length of the song, it's struggling to be heard, to be seen. Was this intentional? Was Quinn Fox trying to portray this battle between music and static that perceive? Who knows. Personal Rating: 2/5
  10. Rez 'Fear (Arrakis: GIGA)' I have a confession to make: I've never seen Dune. Or played Rez *stunned silence* Now on to the mix... it's very interesting, but not my cup of tea. I'm never fond of mixes where the voice samples seem to take center stage as they do in here (unless it's Daknit finding some great innuendo in innocent StarCraft lines. ^^) but maybe I'm biased cause I'm not familiar with any of the source material. Once the music takes center stage it gets a tad better, but it plays the same short theme over and over and over... I'll be humming it in my sleep now. So I guess there's not much stuff here that I really enjoyed. But if you're into Dune or Rez, you might.
  11. Mario Paint 'bLiNd Is Dah BomB!' The intro to this piece is very odd. From there its a very cool sounding piece with a Techno beat, and it's got some very experimental sounds to it. Obviously, since I said techno and experimental in the same sentence, twice now, not every one is going to take to this piece, but give it a try, you never know. I do very much love the vocal samples and I wish they were more frequent in this song, but I suppose I can't have everything I want. It's interesting, and catchy, which is why I Love this piece. Good work, DJ Leifo (Ko Miho Leifo), keep it up.
  12. Mega Man X3 'House Hornet' Imagine this: you and your friends are playing a friendly game of D&D, when the party comes across a nest of giant bees. You, as the DM, set the tone of the encounter by looping the song throughout the entire, veeeerrryyy long encounter. Well, at least that's what I did, and you know what? None of the players ever got tired of the song! That alone should be a testament to it's greatness. And if all of that went over your head, this shouldn't: Very highly recommended. (and folks, in the 130+ reviews I've typed up, that's the first time that "very" has snuck in there.)
  13. Bubble Bobble 'This Is Not a True Ending (Asphyxiation)' Personally, I think this mix is great especially that part that starts at about 0:54. Throughout the rest of the mix, the distortion makes it sound like really heavy guitars or something. And the best part about this mix is that if you don’t like this one, there is even another version with the same title without the Asphyxiation. Awesome work, Children of the Monkey Machine, keep it up.
  14. Mega Man 2 'Wily's Mosh Pit' Heh... thanks for nat banging the hell out of the percussion like I was expecting from the beginning... I can't stand that kind of music! As it is, though, this is well-arranged and well-played, and probably one of my top Mega Man mixes right now. Nice work.
  15. Mega Man 2 'Bubble Man (Electron Mix)' Organ does the main tune as fake guitars, bass etc come in and out playing different parts. More panning should have been done here, but it's still quite acceptable. The drums have a short delay on them which sounds sort of cool, and there's just enough variety to keep you interested. Some of the highs are a little sharp, but it's still ok for the most part. Ok song, but could have been better in the creativity department.
  16. Donkey Kong Country 'Ambient Gemini' As the title suggests, this song is quite ambient. Delayed synthy flute starts this off. We've got a tomish kick in the right ear, some little hats in the centre, two sets of synth strings to the left, delayed piano and a couple of other lead synths. The delay in this track is panned to the opposite ear, so you hear the copy on the other side and it makes for quite a good atmosphere. You'll also notice a few ambient sounds here and there. I really don't like the kick in the right ear though - it really feels off balance. Everything else is quite well done, with a generous amount of reverb on some of the instruments and some good mixing of each individual track. Nice stuff.
  17. Battletoads 'Bird Guy Jam' A nice mix between thudding drum hits and light airy synths. The rubbery bassline is a little weird. But hey, it's Battletoads. I like.
  18. Chrono Cross 'Nikki Learns a Song' First off, I love a nice long remix. I love songs I can get into for several minutes. Not that I don't love short little gems like Music of my Groin, but when a song gives you time to get to know it and hear development, I just love it. This track is no exception. It's got several different personalities that come and go, thrashy, smooth and wild.. a great track by Ailsean.
  19. Metroid 'Metaltroid' It's Ailsean. I shouldn't have to review this for you to already want to download it. While not as refined as some of his other mixes, this hard-edged Metroid track has some great trash moments in it.
  20. Castlevania 'Wickedest Child' Straight up rock remixes are always welcome. The guitar intro of this one reminds me of X Japan. It's wide open and epic sounding. The lead line kicks in and just grinds until the file runs out of bits to kick your ass with. Awesome work.
  21. Final Fantasy VIII 'Final Jungle Fantasy' Awesome experimentation with some very interesting sounds here, and that’s one extremely deep sliding bass. Excellent voice samples, and break beat drums to match. Doesn't sound much like the Rural jungle, but defiantly fits the Urban Jungle. Absolutely amazing, DJ Pheonix, I love it.
  22. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Ice Cap Zone (Frozen Knuckles Mix)' I love the intro voice sample. I love the bassline. I love the drums. I love the game samples. I love those strings. I love this whole gosh darn mix. Rayza really puts on an excellent show for us here and shows us just what is the fastest thing alive is. As a final note, I just have to say that damn frozen knuckles would hurt. Anyways, excellent work, Rayza, keep it up.
  23. Wizards & Warriors 'Grosse Lederhosen' This one is interesting to say the least, a very upbeat loud kick electronic sound. The only thing I can say that I don’t really take to is the arpeggio that starts at about 2:53 and completes the song. The instrument used for it sounds too much like it’s just a drum with no pitch change at all. Besides that, the rest of the mix is great, right up my ally. I especially like the Pulp Fiction sample, nice touch Grodan Grobi.
  24. Blaster Master 'TI Blasta Party' Pretty average techno here, and it has its share of problems. There's a lot of dissonance in here - some of it works well, some of it really tweaked my ear. Also, you can only use a flanging so much before it starts to grate, and that point is reached about 1 minute into this 4 minute mix. Ouch. And lastly, it just didn't hold my attention very well - guess it was too repetitive or something. Either that or I'm too tired to let anything hold my attention. Oh well. At any rate, sorry, but I really can't recommend this.
  25. Final Fantasy V 'Cursed Pirates of the Sea' Yay! An FF5 mix! And one that does not, under any circumstances disappoint. Intro sounds a little like Monkey Island - an very good thing. It then moves into a very eclectic style, using acoustic and synth instruments to very good effect, and covering two songs from FF5. Its not without its share of problems - drums are maybe a tad overpowering, and the horn in the second half sounds a little out of place to me. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this to anyone.
