Instrumental & Vocal Skills (Other)

  1. Doom II 'Blood Bath' This is an interesting piece of music. Not half as spooky as Ghetto Lee Lewis's orchestral instrumentation for "Friday the 13th Panic at Camp Crystal" but it's got a creepy theme all the same. I love Mazedude's use of guitars and panning. The organ is definitely the main source of the creepy feel in this one, but the other instruments are definitely not lacking in that respect. I would have to say that I think this is probably Mazedude's best work here on Overclocked. Excellent work Mazedude.
  2. Final Fantasy VII 'A World of Piano' Ok. Honestly, this one didn't impress me. Yes, it's done on the piano. Yes it was played live (most likely anyway). But I honestly didn't think it was out of the ordinary for a piano arrangement. The melody was pretty much standard with a little bit of variety near the end, and the accompaniament was pretty standard arpeggiated 5ths. I suppose with time we'll see more variety and versatility from Mr. Klutz, but for a first or second attempt, it's not bad. The dynamics and technique are good. DC
  3. Chrono Trigger 'The Trial in Concert' I am honored to start off the review thread for this remix. Simply put, it is AMAZING. The only disadvantage to it showing up on Overclocked is that it's been around on other sites for a while, and the bitrate had to drop in order to get it under the filesize limit here. But if you download one CT remix from this entire site, let this one be it!
  4. Final Fantasy VI 'Phantom Midnight' I personally really liked this piece. The arrangement is straightforward, yes, but it's strength lies more in the emotion it lends the song rather than in showing it in a new light. Not the greatest FF mix here, but worth a download unless you have something against the game.
  5. Final Fantasy 6 'Enchanted Esper' This is one hell of an amazing mix, in part because of its length. Yeah, there are some mixes that just shouldn't be very long, but there are some that just scream at you "There should be more here!" This one on the other hand is very complete, covers all the bases and styles possible, and keeps you interested. The guitars to me, sound a bit too harsh, almost grainy. But that is all I can think to mention negatively about this excellent piece of work. Indeed, excellent work Protricity.
  6. Final Fantasy VI & IX 'The Endless Search' Hear that horn? How about that organ? This one is some piece of work, definitely broadening the amount of genre's we have around here. I'm not going to lie to you and say that I really love this sound. It's just not my taste, but it doesn't matter what you like, you have to admit that this one is really very well done. Somebody who really likes this genre give this a good review please. Nice work NoppZ, try something different next time... for me, please! Only kidding, do whatever you want.
  7. Chrono Cross 'Just Chill' This, to me, is musical excellence. The Pancake Chef has everything so well balanced in this piece it’s like a taste of perfection. Having the drums panned to the left, and the bass balancing to the right creates a very interesting environment for this mix. Excellent work Mr. Pancake Chef.
  8. Donkey Kong Country 'Ambient Gemini' As the title suggests, this song is quite ambient. Delayed synthy flute starts this off. We've got a tomish kick in the right ear, some little hats in the centre, two sets of synth strings to the left, delayed piano and a couple of other lead synths. The delay in this track is panned to the opposite ear, so you hear the copy on the other side and it makes for quite a good atmosphere. You'll also notice a few ambient sounds here and there. I really don't like the kick in the right ear though - it really feels off balance. Everything else is quite well done, with a generous amount of reverb on some of the instruments and some good mixing of each individual track. Nice stuff.
  9. Chrono Trigger 'Ruined World (Eternal Derelict)' This is, in my opinion. one of CotMM's best tracks. Definitely sounds like it's from the soundtrack of a CT movie. Sets up some GREAT ambiance, then builds a slow-moving (in a good way) melody on top of it. Then just as it starts to get boring, CotMM changes it up, first shifting out the melody and adding in some de-tuned bells, then bringing in a new melody (this one from The Day the World Revived). I would LOVE to know what CotMM had in mind with this, as it sounds like there was definitely a concept behind it that goes beyond the music. Highly recommended.
  10. Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike 'Jungle Jazz' It's McVaffe - what do you expect? Quality, that's what! This remix starts with a well-played (or VERY well synthesized) piano solo, then adds jungle drum loops on top of it. Personally, I liked the piano better than the drum loops, as the drums sounded like every other jungle loop. But overall, another winner from McVaffe. Recommended.
  11. NiGHTS into dreams... 'Merry Little Christmas' This is a very light, very Christmassy piece. It’s too bad its late spring, because I’m sure I could give this a much better review on December 24th. But I will say that it does put me in the mood for some eggnog, regardless of what time of year it is. Excellent work, Dale North, keep it up.
  12. Donkey Kong Country 'Christmas Cave' I love what Deimos has done here. A very interesting melody, but don’t think that just because I say melody that it’s boring. This one keeps changing things up, and moves to a new feel, and then back again. Not for those who need high energy techno, or hard core rock to survive, I’ll admit, but calm soothing music has its charm as well. I love this piece, Deimos, great work.
  13. Final Fantasy IV 'Tale in Piano' This mix is the ever popular FF Main Theme (known as the Prologue back in my day! .) This particular arrangement is very well done, and sounds very full for a piano piece. Notable because of it's expressiveness and emotion - it almost brought a tear to my eye. Very artfully done.
  14. Seiken Densetsu 3 'Angels on the Shore' This is a very sweet moving melody, nice soft ambiance, and a lovely wind instrument. This one really makes me wish I could play the game because the way it sounds, there must be a deep story line behind this somewhere. If you like slow melodies then this one is probably for you, a good break from the fast paced electronic stuff. Thank you for this Ailsean.
  15. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 'Town Music (Busy Life)' Oh Hazama, Hazama, Hazama. What am I ever going to do with you? Hazama really puts the quark in music. This mix is a real smooth soft drum beat with a cute little piano tune, but that’s not the real treat here. It's Hazama’s adorable (sorry, that’s the only word I could come up with to describe it) little voice as he rhymes to describe the life of a Hyrulian. And in response to Hazama’s comment on this mix , "I don’t think we can do anything but love you, Hazama. Keep on rhyming."
  16. Street Fighter II 'Tatsumakisenputronic' Awesome electronic sounds and it’s just the right length if you’re a fan of techno. I love the mood that is set by the chords and piano in the beginning that carries right into the high energy techno beats. The voice samples add an emphasis of power and strength that reflects the attitude of the game. An excellent mix DJ StarBLaSt, and well worth the download.
  17. Mega Man 'Set Me Up the Bomb Man' Someone give me a controller, I want to play some Mega Man. Mute the TV and put this on the stereo. Yes! That’s what I’m talking about. In case you haven’t already noticed, I suppose I should let you in on a little secret: I love this mix. The thing that gets me into the groove with this one is that bass line. It sounds like the authentic NES bass enough to bring back the memories of those old games (not that I ever played Mega Man in particular), while still adding enough sweet electronic spunk to make me want to dance. And by the way, it also hops into some awesome piano inserts a couple times, just to spice things up.
  18. Final Fantasy VI 'Back to Towne (Arranged)' McVaffe is back in piano arrangement mode again I see, with a FF3 mix done completely in piano, with a touch of strings and flute. Now, I'm going to try and not be biased again as usual, since I'm not really into this kind of thing, so I had better watch myself. Personally, I think this is one of McVaffe's better piano exclusive pieces, and I really like the quality of the sound that's displayed here. I must admit, the work done here is great as I believe those into the music would really be in for a treat. BTW, I’ve always wondered this, is it pronounced M.C. Vaffe or McVaffe as in McDonalds?
  19. EarthBound 'Sound Stone (C Major)' Spekkosaurus with a piano exclusive rendition of EarthBound. Quite realistic sounding, but the bad thing about this is the nasty high-end crackle which appears after the choir sound enters. It sort of ruins it in some way. Still, I really like the effort and bravery that went into this, but it's just a little long and some parts didn't keep my interest for long enough (especially when the bass plays on it's own).
  20. GoldenEye 007 'Controlled Jazz' Minimalistic jazz of the classic Bond theme and Mustin on sax? sounds like a winner to me, and my ears agree.
  21. Suikoden II 'Reminiscence (Deep Sleep)' Nice soft mix from Hazama. This is my personal favorite of his stuff, (I'm not overly fond of the Pop-Up mix). If you like pianos you'll love this mix. A very underwatery sounding mix also. It's a pretty tune.
  22. Radical Dreamers 'The Furthest Promise' Tinkly piano intro, really nice, followed by what we've all come to expect from Ailsean, some great electric guitar. Not much to say except that this mix is definitely one of the betters in the Radical Dreamers flood. Check it out, along with the rest of the Far Promise flood of Apr 21st. Collect the whole set!
  23. Final Fantasy VI 'Death on the Snowfield' Yes yes yes yes. Shoot me in the head, because I'm gonna go insane. I love this remix. The lo-fi sounding drum line has a particularly warm sound to it, contrasting with the minimal and barren sounding guitar line. Just beautiful.
  24. Zelda II 'Thelonius Temple' Niiiiice! I really like the piano on this one and the overall jazz motif. Very well arranged. I can't think of anything bad to say, except that the remixer has never done anything else besides this! That in itself is a shame. OK and I guess it could be a bit longer.
  25. Star Fox 'Clan McCloud' I think right before he made this tune djp must have went to the music store and purchased some new instruments and/or software because the sound quality of his mixes started making leaps and bounds forward with this cool tune. The percussion is particularly good, I think. So are the strings which sound very smooth and clean. In the second half the song quiets down to make room for some cool piano, then gets going again. I thought that was a brilliant touch. Nothing at all bad to say about this ReMix. Well I could probably find something bad if I really wanted to, but I don't want to.
