Well best-of lists are only true for the person who made them, as music means different things to different people.

All those lists really do is give the people on it hollow affirmation and make all the other artists feel bad. Doesn't really add anything to the enjoyment of the music.

While "Best Of" lists make sense to be wary of in a way, I do think there needs to be some kind of "Know Your Roots" list that hits the important mix points of the site. It would work well as a primer for people who are new to the place, are interested by occasional comments people make about this mix and that, but don't have time to listen to all 2000+ tracks to know what's going on.
