Here's a hiphop (?) mix I've been working on for a while that's a fairly loose adaptation of the Mute City theme from the SNES F-Zero. Let me know if anything pops out that you think should be improved. I'm still not satisfied with the scratching, so let me know if you have any ideas.

Also, feel free to lay down some lyrics on top. You just gotta post what you've done in this thread :)

Nice work, I'm really digging this. Nothing popped out at me to complain about, but this is definitely a loose adaption of the source. Maybe even too loose for this site, at least that's my take. And as of now, I'm not really much of anybody.

I'm digging the synth work. It's got a nice West Coast feel to itI I also love the Falcon Puuuunch/Kick sounds thrown overtop. Although I may be listening with bad headphones, I find you really need to make those Primo-ish drums much more chunkier and meatier. The snare needs to SLAM!

Other than that, great great job!

I also use Flare on the iPhone for scratching if you need some fresh "waka waka whaaa?" sounds.

I feel like it does stray rather far from the source, perhaps you could make the lead synth be a closer arrangement of the theme. I also think the melee/brawl sound clips are overused a bit, it seems would be better to have another instrument take it's place sometimes. The bass is also a little repetative, it could benefit from some more variations.

Thanks for the feedback. The song actually didn't start as a vg remix, which would explain why isn't as close to the Mute City theme, but it seemed to click that the melodies were similar.

A-RoN, have you ever played with the FL Scratcher in FL Studio? It seems like that might work similarly to the Flare app you mentioned.

I'll see what I can do about adding some variety to the bassline. The genre I was trying to emulate has really repetitive baselines, but I think there are parts of the song where I could spice it up.

Definitely needs beefier drums. It may or may not need some mastering additionally after the addition of said drums. Also the those samples do get a little overused throughout the song. Maybe consider recruiting a rapper to spit some rhymes over this, as that would make the track a lot less repetitive sounding.

Also I'm not entirely sure the source usage for this would pass the bar. I have to do a good amount of checking here to verify.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. Here are some of the changes I made based on your suggestions.

  • Updated the composition to feature the original melody more prominently.
  • Toned down the Captain Falcon samples.
  • Changed the drums up to be a little stronger.
  • Added variety to the bassline.
  • Added a scratching solo. (I'm no turntablist, so let me know whether or not it's worth it to keep this)
  • Lots of general mixing and mastering changes.

Any feedback on the above changes much appreciated as well as anything that sticks out. Thanks!

Honestly, I think you could take those voice clip changes and drum changes even farther. I think the drums still need more oomph, and the voices should be a bit more in the back. But all-in-all, it's a pretty good remix. The soundscape you have going is really nice, and save for the drums, the EQ is really good, I think.

The intro seems to drag a little long for me.

The only soundclip I'd keep is the first Falcon Paunch. A good ol' massive drum hit could work a lot better instead of more 'falcon paunches'

I'm not sure if I dig the disc scratchings half way through the song.

Also, throughout the entire song is sounds to me that drum are a little on the weak side, especially the snares. Also pulling back the high frequencies on the synths a tad will give a little ear-piercing on them.

But overall, doesn't sound too bad. Keep going.

Yeah those high frequencies in the stuttered synth are a little harsh on the ears, but damn this is a cool track! It's absolutely crying out for some vocals though so try and get someone to collab with you on this one. I like the sound clips, and don't think they'd sound out of place if there was someone rapping over the rest of the track.

Yeah, I can see what DarkSim said working. Talk to Megaran (@Megaran on twitter) and see if he's willing to work on it. I know he likes to do collabs, especially on game stuff.
