Mr. Bottle Rocket
Introduction You've just completed your archaeology degree. You're about to take your experience into the field, where your daily life will include whipping living mummies, breaking ancient pottery, jumping out of airplanes, dodging spikes, and stealing priceless golden artifacts from Nazis before they can use them to take over the world. It's a dangerous job, but you live for thrills, fame, and riches (and, to a lesser extent, the study of past human civilization). Regardless, you're going to need some background music. Sources Definitely approved: La-Mulana, Tomb Raider, 1001 Spikes, Uncharted, Indiana Jones (no tunes from the movies). If you have a different idea, we’re open to other sources. The protagonist of the game needs to be an archaeologist or archaeology-related adventurer primarily; if the character often fills various other roles, their games are not currently eligible (i.e. Mario, who only occasionally appears as an archaeologist). If you’re wondering whether a certain game will be an appropriate choice, listen to the soundtracks listed above and see how well your idea fits in thematically. Check the tracklist or ask one of us for specific recommendations. Style Mysterious temples, heart-pounding action, and everything in between. World instruments and/or influences are highly recommended, but not required. You can be totally serious, you can be a little silly, just keep it in the theme of adventure, exploration, danger, wonder, etc... Deadlines On an individual basis, we'd like to hear from people once a month until they're done. That could mean an extra minute of arrangement, a tweaked snare, or an occasional "my whole family fell to the mummy's curse and I didn't get a chance to work on it." If you don't show any progress or cannot be contacted for three months in a row, we'll remove you from the claims list, though you can come back if your source is still open. We'll work out final deadlines once the project is well on its way; it's possible you'll never have to worry about it. Claims To claim a source, send Hylian Lemon or Mr. Bottle Rocket a private message describing how you plan to approach the arrangement. If you aren't a posted remixer, we'll need some recent examples of your work first. Make sure you're ready to get started on your track at the time of your claim. Chernabogue
Woah, that concept is really awesome. Kinda like doing the soundtrack to an adventure movie Very nice project, a pleasure to read. My only concern is the ultra short deadlines. If you have no tentative release date so far, try to space them more, two weeks is ultra short. I may join once my own projects get released later this year.
Mr. Bottle Rocket
I'll discuss the deadlines issue with hylian, thanks for the interest and good luck on your project! Chernabogue

If you have no tentative release date so far, try to space them more, two weeks is ultra short. Hey, Chern. The decision to handle deadlines that way comes from my own experience with a personal album I'm working on, as well as with the Oracle albums I directed. Getting Phonetic Hero to hold me accountable for weekly updates was the best thing I could've done for my own album, and thinking about how people reacted to deadlines in previous projects made me wonder if a similar approach could work there. When there's a distant deadline, people (and/or I) claim tracks and then don't work on them for a while. By the time the deadline rolls around, they've often forgotten about it (and in some cases are completely unreachable). Lots of time is wasted. Our "deadline" system is more of a check-in thing to make sure people are still on board; we'd love substantial WIP updates, but a little "I'm still here, just busy" or "I did a bit of work, but nothing worth an export yet" works too. Considering people often sign up to write full remixes in one week for various competitions, I don't think two-week check-ins are unreasonable. What it boils down to is that we're not looking for claims by people who can't set aside a few minutes of remixing time every couple of weeks. If someone's really that busy, they probably have too much on their plate already, and I'd rather not add to it! It's less about getting the album done quickly and more about keeping tracks out of limbo. Hope that answers your concerns.
Chernabogue
I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I like it, but two weeks sounded a little short to me. Good luck with the project as well

Good luck with the project as well Hmm, I get you. We'll see how it goes. More than two weeks seems a little long to me, but extension could be a possibility down the line if necessary. Mr. Bottle Rocket
A small update, it's not music related but it's still related. Jorito
Heh, somehow missed this. Dig the concept! I'm a bit too busy atm to make a claim and join, but I do have a question. I'm oldskool and an MSX home computer fan so I'd be interested in doing a King's Valley 2 remix. Does it qualify? It's an 8 bit puzzle game by Konami with an archeologist exploring pyramids in Egypt and features some cool Egyptian music that just begs for a remix. Here's a video with some gameplay and music: Mr. Bottle Rocket, Eino Keskitalo and zykO

Jorito
Good to hear! It'll probably take a few weeks before I can start with this, but know that I'm planning to join in. I do agree with Chernabogue about the 2-week checkin (4 weeks would be my sweet spot for quality progress time vs nagging reminders), but your album, your rules For me it mostly means finding a less busy time before committing. Mr. Bottle Rocket
Hylian and I have talked over about the check-in periods awhile back and I think we'd be pretty okay with extending it to 3 weeks, we don't want a situation where too much time passes between those since we're not really asking for progress on your mixes we just want to hear from you guys on your current life situation, like if you need some time off to deal with other stuff in the mean time. Mr. Bottle Rocket
dooble post but I have an update to share on deadlines. Essentially hylian and I have discussed the matter further and we've made the following changes to the deadlines(bolded the new parts): Deadlines On an individual basis, we'd like to hear from people once a month until they're done. That could mean an extra minute of arrangement, a tweaked snare, or an occasional "my whole family fell to the mummy's curse and I didn't get a chance to work on it." We'll work out final deadlines once the project is well on its way; it's possible you'll never have to worry about it. Naturally if you are able to warn us beforehand that you will be MIA for 3 or more months we'll be lenient on that matter.
Jorito
That seems like a good way forward to me, thanks
Lemonectric
A little update to talk about album artwork! We're interested in having an Indiana Jones grail diary style of artwork for the project--essentially, little sketches of puzzles, traps, maps, and ancient carvings from various games with notes jotted around them. Like this. There could be some mixed media applications if you want to cook up a real thing and take a picture of it on a desk, or you could just do it digitally. We're open to ideas. At this point, the artwork isn't a high priority yet, but that's the kind of stuff we'll be looking for! Of course, we're still looking for music. I'll jump in once I get a better sense of which games aren't getting claimed! Mr. Bottle Rocket
wildfire
I haven't forgotten about this. I'm trying to organize my project commitments right now, and I think I can get something temporary by the end of March maybe? Still planning on that Spelunky remix, possibly in a blues style. Mr. Bottle Rocket
Awesome! Great to hear an update on that. Hylian and I have been a bit busy ourselves with ye olde life but we're still discussing how to best approach things like recruitment and project management so there's no rush, thank you for still having interest in joining in on this. Also, might I add that both of our current mixers have done a superb work on their tunes so far, I can't wait till the day everyone can hear these. Eino Keskitalo
I have some ideas. I really dig the theme (..yeah), I'll see if I can clear my project backlog before this one's finished. edit: dammit, Jorito already used that pun. Mr. Bottle Rocket
Excellent. I reckon you're safe on a time window to join this, we're in for a long bout of field work to get this journal filled up and ready for the scientific community. Chernabogue
I'd like to tentatively claim Spelunky's "Cave Theme". I don't think I'll have the time to start working on it before mid-March (exams and looking for an internship), so I hope that's not a problem. Jorito
Lemonectric
We'll check up with you a month from now, but you can keep the claim for a few months before we send the repo men. Ok, I'm putting you down for "Cave" from the original Spelunky soundtrack! Wildfire is interested in the newer Spelunky soundtrack. We probably won't take any more Spelunky than that unless the tracklist expands significantly to make room for it.
Chernabogue
I should have a rough WiP for the first deadline. This album's concept is too good to pass it! Mr. Bottle Rocket
Mr. Bottle Rocket
Daniel Caton has now joined our team on the dig site, he has laid claim to Nate's Theme from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I've updated our google spreadsheet to reflect this.
Jorito
I'm still interested in claiming something, probably from King's Valley 2, but life dictates my energy and time currently need to be elsewhere. Hope to make a claim in a month or so!
