Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
Meteo Xavier replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
I have to confess something. I played a game today where the main character had big boobies, and now I'm sexist. I wasn't even playing as a chick either, it was a guy named Harold... -

Meteo Xavier replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
Good luck making that work anymore. "Check your privilege" really is replacing that as a fundamental ethos for how this stuff works. The "progress at any cost" movement carrying things now is even starting to conflict with other hypersensitivities. Remember that "walking around for 10 hours" street harassment video? Yep, it's racist, because it doesn't show much of WHITE male catcalling, it just makes blacks and latinos look sexist. Now it's sort of a power struggle to see which prominent "groups" represented is the bigger victim in it. It's just fucking mindboggling what we're willing to do (or do instead of something useful) for the sake of "progress" right now. -

Yeah, I agree I worded that too broadly, I'll fix that in a bit. I figured that sentence was pretty self-explanatory by itself, but here is where we venture into a realm where most people arguing on the subject refuse to go, it's called the "Gray Area". If you can read the following text, it means you understand how "gray" works. It means that the basic point she's making is good, but the methods she's using to bring that point about are not as effective as someone with her means should be able to provide. Because she's using such an extreme and flawed method to get her views out, she has systematically helped start a war that didn't need to be fought just to provide some education and progress to an issue. This much is proven based on documented research errors she has made in her videos and messages and based on the criticism she has gotten from other feminist gamers. So now we have more than one school of thought fighting for the same cause, but they disagree on the methods of how that's done. By the precedents set by Anita supporters, the schools of thought should be 100% correct, but how can that be? It can't. This is cognitive dissonance. Worse than that, she has made significant profit off of her flawed rhetoric which really should raise some eyebrows from even some of her best admirers. It's one thing to make money off the things you tell people, like Zircon said it's perfectly legit by itself, but that's not simply what's going on here - it's another thing to make an excessively large amount of money just to create material that even her own peers have problems with. I'm even researching it now as I write this response, and I still haven't seen where all that money went. If it's reasonable to think people should make money off their views, it's reasonable to expect self-styled icons of crusaders in their field to be using a good section of that money for additional charity. Then there's this: http://cowkitty.net/post/78808973663/you-stole-my-artwork-an-open-letter-to-anita Now it doesn't really matter it was fan art to begin with, that's not the point. The point is that Anita is someone who thinks with her heart, not with her head. And her passionate but half-true statements have just enough strength to inspire other people who are smart enough to want change, but not smart enough to understand that progress at any cost is not progress. Not everyone she's pissing off are GamerGate fucktards, she's pissing off other reasonable people who could be helping to push progress forward faster if she wasn't tainting the movement by: - Having extreme views on a subject that needs to be studied carefully. - Not disclosing where the additional funds are, which gives power to her critics and decent evidence she is motivated by money, not social justice. - "Educating" truths to a desperate audience that are not properly researched and are thus propelled in potentially wrong directions. - Stealing intellectual property, whether from that other artist or the game companies themselves. I'm pretty sure SNK, Nintendo, et all didn't license her to use clips of stuff in a video series that there is good enough evidence she uses for major personal profit. There are other feminists gamers out there providing GOOD education that are not doing these things to get it, yet Anita is the one who is iconic and everyone listens to. So now my question is this: By supporting Anita, are you telling me its ok to make shit up and steal things as long as you're doing it for a good cause? Is this a case where ethics are not required to be ethical themselves? What is the precedent being set here? It can't be black and white here. -

Actually, I just found something refuting it myself. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Trivia/FeministFrequency, down at the entry, "One of Us". It also answers your question where that comes from. I've edited the section of my previous post to suit. All the same, I'm not sure why she would make that infamous comment in the first place if she does enjoy gaming to some degree. It's things like this that still crack at the level of authority she has in the rhetoric she's selling. I just can't fathom why any reasonable adult would champion this firebrand when there are much better examples of feminist critics and gamers out there. -

Edit: Took this section out as I found refuted sources myself. Also fixing the section where I worded the justify means part too broadly and the criticism for it is justified. At best, she's ruining a good and proper movement with shady, bullshit tactics and destroying the good fabric of gender equality issues that need to be addressed. At worst, she's just profiting off a hot button issue with no real emotional investment to it. She's Ken fucking Ham. Does that make it ok to post death threats to her and her family? Of course not. But just because two sides are at war does not mean one is simply right and the other is simply wrong. They can easily BOTH be wrong (which is usually what leads to conflict in the first place). Anita, feminists like her, and the Gamergate fuckheads are all scum. It doesn't matter who's right or for what cause. Anita hasn't done anything to advance women's rights in video gaming, she's just brought it from a boiling topic to outright, pointless war. Every step she's brought the movement forward has had an immediate step back. Certainly there are much better examples of gamer feminists in our culture today, don't you think? -

I'm totally in opposition to the modern feminist movement, but even I have to wonder where this joke about murdering men comes from. I haven't seen that rooted anywhere outside that Valerie chick's SCUM manifesto, I just see feminists acting childish. The violence part is unknown to me. -

I am in Bullet Hell - Now I need recommendations.
Meteo Xavier replied to Meteo Xavier's topic in General Discussion
Well, if'n you bastards ain't going to feed me recommendations, I'll brag about other Bullet Hell-related wins I've scored. Today at Gamestop, I found a copy of Taito Legends 2 marked for $1.99. This disk holds several otherwise expensive SHMUPS that Taito did and the disk was in a good condition. Somehow, I'm still not sure what I did to get this, but I ended up only paying $0.55 for it! That's the cheapest game purchase I've ever made (unless you count Lifesavers as currency). Still unsure how Gamestop gets so much hate. -

Ah, now there's some good PC recommendations. I forgot about Jamestown. A bunch of those listed for the arcade I'm using Final Burn Legends for - there's no way in hell I'm paying $80-$150+ for a fuckin' arcade shooter. I don't have any iOS currently (and I hope to never do). I thought about getting into Android gaming like I said earlier because I did see Cave finally put a bunch of their games for reasonable prices up on there, but I also couldn't find a lot of other games on Android I felt like buying an Ouya or even that Google console thing they're coming out with just to enjoy that. One of those $50 PSP Vita knockoffs tempt me, but that's about it. -

I've seen Usa a couple times recently. He's still onboard to master, and I don't think he would be if he thought he'd be too busy for it (he's quick too, he once mastered an album for me during an AIM conversation!) Mastering music is his day time job IIRC, so he really knows how to do it. The only hard part is just finding him online, but last I saw him, he told me he'd be on more as some of his other gigs got finished. -

For $45 at its cheapest from what I see. I have Ikaruga for the Cube and Radiant Silvergun on the Xbox, that's probably all the Treasure SHMUP I can stand. I probably should've mentioned it but I didn't want to seem unrealistic in that I was hoping to find Danmakus I didn't have to spend an arm and a leg on (the unrealism part being that they are among the most expensive console games that can be found). Some of the PC ones I saw were highly affordable, like Danmaku Unlimited 2 ($4.99). I still think about getting an Android thing for some of the cheap re-releases on that from Cave and the Raiden series and such, but short of getting one of those Chinese $50 PS Vita knockoffs, I haven't found enough on it to justify getting an Android system yet. -

Ehh, I don't have a PS3. My brother does now, but that's not enough access for me to purchase any PS3 games. What about ones for Windows PC? That's what I was asking about. -

Oh I've got that on the Gamecube, have had it for ten years (bought it new for $19.99) and I'm certain to break it out again as I hadn't in some time. Not my favorite one, but I'd be remiss to give it a lark again. -
After years of avoiding the genre and coming into contact to it through my Japanese Sega Saturn collecting binge of the last 6 weeks, I'm now fully infected with the Bullet Hell/Danmaku bug. I've made many purchases to just barely satisfy this craze that couldn't have come at a worse time (this is Halloween for God's sakes!), much that I could get from Xbox Live, Gunbird for the Sega Saturn, Castle of Shikigami II for the PS2, Chaos Field for the Gamecube, Deathsmiles and I even fuckin' imported Dodonpachi Resurrection Deluxe Edition from the PAL for the Xbox 360 (which is region-free and comes with an arrange album). And yet STILL my thirst remains unquenched. Now I look towards Windows and maybe even Android, which I've never touched or had any interest in until this new mania set in. I know about the Touhou series and will get into it. I've seen Danmaku Unlimited 2 and make great preference to purchase, but I find it's harder to look up Android and Windows Danmakus right now than lists of ones available for consoles. Any other recommendations? Any I can run on a 4+ year old Acer Aspire One Netbook with 1gig ram, 2.0Ghz (I think) single processor? I got Final Burn Alpha and a bunch of late 90s, early 2000s SHMUPS to work on there fine. What else you got?

We can talk and argue about labels until I shit a golden egg, but the functional way the "intelligent", "aware" or whatever the name for people who think they're thinkers because they think differently from the "mainstream" cloud of nameless scapegoats consider groups they don't agree with is this: "You and everyone like you is only as good as the weakest, most hideous link in your chain." Christians are all brainwashing, gay-bashing, child-abusing pedophiles who don't understand science. Muslims are all patriarchal terrorists who want to have sex with a buttload of virgins. Atheists are all pretentious, Josef Stalin wannabes, and feminists are all Valerie Solanas and Anita Sarkeesian. This is what "intelligent" people keep saying on their own volition, so it must be true. Until you start seeing a major movement where people are volunteering compassionate invitations for understanding the groups they themselves admit to not agreeing with, the weakest link in the chain and the labels are going to prevail not just amongst the ignorant, but the people who aren't ignorant too. -
Just trying my luck here wishing for an affordable copy of something unlikely anyone would have - but anyone selling a copy of Raiden: Fighters Aces for Xbox 360?

On the subject of Anita, did you guys see she had to cancel a speaking engagement because someone called in a mass-shooting threat to it? Not even a death threat to her but countless others. We're going to be in a shooting civil war here pretty soon with the way our "intelligent, socially aware" leading generation is carrying things out. I'd be lying if I said 0% of me somewhat welcomes it, but that part gets overwhelmed at the basic human level that recognizes how fucked up that really is. -

I have a bunch of promotional ideas and such for SD3, I just haven't had time to update and organize them into something. This is a particularly busy time for me, as I have some book publishing business I can't afford to miss out on, two game soundtracks I'm working on and prepping for, and I just got tasked to write a game story as well. That doesn't even count my full time job or the extra camera work I'm doing to pay my doctor's bills from July. That sounds like a thin veil for bragging of my current opportunities, but I'm stretched way too thin right now. I love that my work is finally paying off, but it's all coming in at the same time! And at the last half of October which is my most valuable time of the year. Anyone who needs me for anything can contact me at any time, but that's the only way I'll be available for any active work here until around the start of November. -
EWQL Orchestral Templates?
Meteo Xavier replied to Meteo Xavier's topic in Music Composition & Production
It's all good, man. I did figure orchestral stuff of that nature was much harder to do and therefore much harder to find, but I thought it was definitely worth the question since I'm getting awesome results from the performance MIDIs and multis.
