  1. Nuff said, there is none. There is only: MIDI 0 and MIDI 1 The main difference is only one thing: MIDI 0 starts with Channel 0 up to channel 15 per MIDI bus. MIDI 1 starts with Channel 1 up to channel 16 per MIDI bus. You can't enhance MIDI. Sometimes it's not even fully fledged out. That HD-MIDI/XG/OSC thing is crap - at least at the moment. I'd personally like to have a better "dithering" (resolution from 0-256 rather than 0-127, then again there's SYS-EX which runs on a HEX basis) but in times where music is compressed to it's maximum, it's so totally useless. BTW: You all say "there is no MIDI", "MIDI sounds" or even MIDI is crap. A couple of things to finally set clear: - MIDI is a controlling language to "remote control" synthesizers, several parameters, program changes, FX settings and the like. - MIDI is built into everything if you work with instruments. That counts to hardware synths/sampler, as it does count to software synths/sampler. Even if you say "that isn't controlled by MIDI", it sure is in the background. Or do you think every sequencer invents the wheel anew. If so, no 3rd Party VST Plugins/VSTi would work with them! - Still questions about MIDI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIDI To the XG Software-Synth: I have to dissapoint you. There were once two Software synths. One called S-YXG50 and one S-YXG100. They differed in terms of patches included, but were basicly software rebuilts from their hardware equivalents: DB50XG Wavetable/MU-15 and the MU-100. Those synthesizers were DISCONTINUED. They were once standalone synths running in the background to "brighten up" MIDI files that were once standard in videogames before lossy formats like mp3/ogg/AC3 took over. You can still find the S-YXG100 (if I'm not mistaken) on the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 however. So if you got a copy of that game, you're lucky. Keep in mind though that this is NOT A VSTi. Chances are that you need a loopback device like "Hubi's MIDI Loopback" to use them in your sequencer. And whoever says that XG sounds crap. I started with the DB50XG Wavetable on a Creative 16bit audiocard, later I got it's "external form", the MU-15 (didn't have the money for the MU-100). Those XG synths were the flagships of Yamaha till they released the Motif series. I still appreciate that oldschool sound once in a while. What made them infamous though were the controlling possibilities. Without 3rd Party tools (which are still available for a couple of bucks) you had massive problems to tickle out everything out of these XG modules. But for bread and butter sounds they were fairly okay. I still use my XG synth from time to time for a couple of productions, even though I'm spoiled with my Kurzweil and tons of (free) software synths by myself. Regarding mLAN: mLAN was only a logical step, invented by Yamaha btw. I sure hope that Muse Research with their UniWire technology and Yamaha with mLAN will revolutionize the music technology in terms of connections. Imagine this: Working on a purely digital base, no need for tons of cables anymore. Neither for audio (with multiple in/out, digital or analog) nor for MIDI (no MIDI switches anymore either). Just one GigaBit LAN network card, a LAN switch with the proper speed and devices that support those systems. Result: - Less cables - Total control of Hardware (special VSTi GUI's for example) - Total control of Software (Faders, Automation, Recording) - Noiseless arrangements (due to the pure digital data transport) - no CPU power blown (some modules could work as "PowerCore" systems with hardware acceleration) But this is a totally different issue.
  2. Makes me want to say: LOL ROFL LOL N00B F4G LOL! XD *if this is really true, cause I know it's made up... haha*
  3. And this is the sign to stop, as it starts to become a "where to get samples" or a general "sample request" thread.
  4. Internet sure is serious business...
  5. Alright look... Instead of whining and acting childish - which is obviously done in here like "OMG MAILBOMB THE CREATORS TO GET US A PASSWORD - ELSE VGDJ IS GONNA DIE! YOU KNOW YOU WANNA!!!" - there're a couple of possibilities. "If" (I put them in quotation marks on purpose) VGDJ is to die, then so be it. Like I said... it's not like the end of the world. Pixietricks knowns exactly what's to be done to do an own radio show. Then why brag on and cry around for getting a "password" for VGDJ from the original creators if they don't feel like it. Would Larry give VGF out of his hands? Would D-Lux give VGMusic out of his hands? I could continue with all other shows too (Fusion Radio, Press Start, Nitro Game Injection, etc). Isn't it easier to start something "own" rather than taking over something, even if it's hard to start at point zero? There're tons of pages out there to host podcasts. Ready to go in a couple of minutes (even layoutet). With your own show you can do whatever the hell you want. You have the brains, you have the equipment - be creative! This is why I wrote it, not to show that I "hate" VGDJ. It's just not the same anymore. See it as your most favourite TV show - and suddenly in the middle of the season you have a totally new crew and main actors for the rest of the run of that show. Wouldn't that kinda piss you off too? Think about it.
  6. As if it'd be the end of the world...
  7. Excuse me if I'm a lazy bitch in terms of "math", but you can do that for yourself this time. Sorry. Just add like... 1:30h to your nearest timezone and you're there. Or... something... whatever. VG FREQUENCY Show #78 - SATURDAY, 11:30pm EST *Expect "OMG DRAMARAMA" tonight!* Here's a small overview of the most salient timezones for you. Small World-Timetable Los Angeles (CA, USA): 8:30pm Calgary (Canada): 9:30pm Chicago (Illinois): 10:30pm Atlanta (GA, USA): 11:30pm Rio de Janero (Brazil): 2:30am (*, Sunday) Reykjavik (Iceland): 4:30am (Sunday) London (England): 4:30am (Sunday) Paris (France): 5:30am (Sunday) Oslo (Norway): 5:30am (Sunday) Germany: 5:30am (Sunday) Kapstadt (South Aftrica): 6:30am (Sunday) Helsinki (Finland): 7:30am (Sunday) Moscow (Russia): 7:30am (Sunday) Hong Kong (China): 12:30pm (Sunday) Tokyo (Japan): 13:30pm (Sunday) Sydney (Australia): 3:30pm (*, Sunday) (*) currently observing daylight saving time (DST) Crap... now I did it anyway. Whatever... Have fun while listening to VGF#78.
  8. Okay, I digged a bit in my archives and my CD backups to find the old tutorial I once wrote after I did some guitar recordings from my electric guitar. This might perhaps clear a couple of things for you. The only problem is, it is in german (and full of typos... I wrote that in the middle of the night and was on a timer - sorry about that). But that's no problem. Important are the snapshots and a translation which you can read further down. The only thing important for you of this PDF is the text on page 4 and 5. Please don't ask me about the samples. You can get the PDF File here: Virtual Electric Guitar - Recording and Simulation Report Here is the translation from pages 4 and 5 into english: Here're are a couple of examples of what I could accomplish with the recordings I made and some added effects (thanks to analoq for giving me his tabs for his Stunt Race FX remix): Several tests how to simulate a guitar I could have done a bit better with automated tremolo and slight pitching (which is easy with Kontakt scripts now), but I used Halion and that time and I was too lazy to program anything. Still you can get out decent results while mixed into an arrangement. Else you have the opportunity to use: - a real guitar - Musiclab RealGuitar - Steinberg Virtual Guitarist (guitar chord player/groove module) For bass there's: - Spectrasonics Trilogy - IK Multimedia SampleTank L (Bass Pack) - B0rnemark Broomstick Bass - Steinberg Virtual Bassist (bass chord player/groove module) I guess that sums it up.
  9. There was a thread once describing all that stuff... now it's gone. [/silent hill]
  10. Just to pimp dis' shit. It's getting lost on the boards really quick lately.
  11. I have to dissapoint you with german tutorials. Germany is pretty much in a "child" level if it goes to remixing. It's all handled as "mega-secret-thingy-dingy" rather than helpful articles.I'm also slowly thinking of stop reading Keys and Keyboards germany. The stuff that's in there is 90% outdated if you know the right places to look for news, the bonus material on CD not really great compared to british or even US magazines (Computer Music, Future Music, Sound on Sound, etc) and the tuturals only give "hints" rather than good knowledge. Also... I'd go away from the Keyboards (Germany) board. It's not really structured and can get confusing for longer threads. Keys is fairly new in that issue however, but like I said... I was dissapointed by the last couple of issues. So I guess that really only leaves the major communities like OCR, VGMix and KWED. KWED has a couple of german mixers, but most of them stuffed with work and the communication is like OCR too: english. So i can only agree to what yoozer said. Browse through our tutorials, some stickies and follow the hints we give to "old threads" from time to time, that's a really good start. We can't help you in terms of "what is the right tool for me". Musicmaker might be a good start, but for serious productions I'd totally go away from it and get another "budget level" tool like Arturia Storm, Reason, Fruity Loops... the usual stuff. Most of the tools on the marked nowadays offer a good basis for every type of genre, so it's not "what tool you have", it's more like "how can you let your tools sound like you want it to sound like". So it's totally up to you. I guess we can't help you that much rather than to say "read manuals and follow the stickies". Then try some stuff, post it in WIP/Remix or WIP/Other, if you have questions come back in here and ask again. That's it. If you really need help in german though, I can try to help but don't expect much. German treads are hijacked with pleasure and I'm not one of those who can be there 24/7 nor am I "the pool of wisdom" if it's outside the sections I'm usually hover around.
  12. May I ask how much you paid for the foam and where you got it from(if it's an internet shop)? I wanna read myself a bit into street prices and stuff. Thanks in advance
  13. I don't even know if I'm being there and record or something. There're other mods who can do the same job as I do. Can't pull every damn night through and follow the regular drama.
  14. To quote Larry "aight my dawgs, tune in this week to..." VG FREQUENCY Show #77 - SATURDAY, 10pm EST *Crappy stream? Blame WMRE! Crappy callers? Blame the callers! Groove bias? Blame... er... whoever you want to blame.* Here's a small overview of the most salient timezones for you. Small World-Timetable Los Angeles (CA, USA): 7:00pm Calgary (Canada): 8:00pm Chicago (Illinois): 9:00pm Atlanta (GA, USA): 10:00pm Rio de Janero (Brazil): 1:00am (*, Sunday) Reykjavik (Iceland): 3:00am (Sunday) London (England): 3:00am (Sunday) Paris (France): 4:00am (Sunday) Oslo (Norway): 4:00am (Sunday) Germany: 4:00am (Sunday) Kapstadt (South Aftrica): 5:00am (Sunday) Helsinki (Finland): 5:00am (Sunday) Moscow (Russia): 6:00am (Sunday) Hong Kong (China): 11:00am (Sunday) Tokyo (Japan): 12:00pm (Sunday, noon) Sydney (Australia): 2:00pm (*, Sunday) (*) currently observing daylight saving time (DST) "aight... now this is it!" Have fun while listening to VGF#77.
  15. Then why did you recommend the Waves L1? This is the devil in disguise in terms of overcompression. Really now... one day you say so, and the other you say so. Also... you mean that I don't know what "mastering" or "engineering" is? Dude... I do this for years now and Cool Edit is definitly not suitable for "good masterings". Also... mastering is not only "smoothing things out". It's also about setting the right volume (balancing out a CD if you do montages), cutting and slicing. Not to mention that most of you still shuffle "pre-mastering" and "postproduction" with "mastering". Not everyone is an engineer by only applying a "limiter" to a track and that's it.
  16. Cool Edit is a pain in the arse for mastering. Recently tested it, even "Adobe Audition" (which is just Cool Edit 2.5 or something) and I wouldn't recommend it to ANYBODY. (yeah flame me, I don't care) And... there're maximizers out there who tend to "pump". Volcano is not the best, it's just one of many free ones.
  17. In every Chrono Trigger song is a part of the main theme. Even in the original version. Same happened with almost all Final Fantasy games. Especially FF7. Another thing that makes "Chrono Symphonic" so special compared to other remixing projects is not the engineering, or the singer, or the remixers. Nope... Chrono Symphonic is the first remixing project (on OCR) that didn't follow the rule "okay you do this and that track and that track only". The mixers could do what they want with their "interpretations". They chose a source tune and mixed it into a complete score. Movie based or not - it is something special. And as already mentioned - the score works best if you have a picture in front of you. So... why not try to play this music while playing Chrono Trigger again? Does it still not apeal? To the "Special Edition": I can only quote Kyle - I'm working on it and it's done when it's done. I won't go into it any further. The thread was closed because it was misused as "feedback" thread, even though in the topic and on the first page was (and still is) standing that this thread is not for feedback and congrats. I'll post in there again if I have some relevant infos for you. Patience...
  18. To some: loud = better loud = most heard loud = get the groove on quiet = no punch quiet = you hear nothing quiet = you have to touch the volume slider => No! These are the standard thoughts and that results in overcompressed tracks unfortunately. If somebody says to me "make it louder", I make it louder. Customer is king. But personally I don't go louder than K-12 (from the K-System) and it's +4dB warning zone.
  19. Gotta speed up my lazy ass with the work I promised to do. If everything fails, you know how to still do a show "outside" of WMRE.
  20. Yeah... and the Waves L2 costs 600bucks itself. I got Shael covered and answered his questions via AIM. And it's pretty new to me that Cool Edit can use VST plugins.
  21. No orchestra I know is 1GB only. EDIROL HQ Orchestra is around 200, the next biggest I know is Garritan, then comes EWQL Silver, Siedlaczek AO, Philharmonik Miroslav, after that the Kontakt2 Pack, and far off everything else. In that order.
  22. You could have searched for "Piano Collection" or just entries that I did. I don't post that often in there. It's old, I don't support it anymore but it's still running hot on my tracker. Link to the Sample Request thread SoundFont was a standard made by the firms E-MU/Ensonic and Creative. Creative ran the system fairly well in times of the AWE series, but it slowly died out with the Live! series from Creative. Even though E-MU and Creative are working together again (Creative Studio product series), they stopped working on the SF2 format. The fans however let this "container format" live on and started the cult to offer samplepackages for "free". Nowadays you can't really buy a samplepack in SF2 format anymore (only what's still in stock). It only lives on in the heart of "sample sharer" and oldschool user. SF2 was pretty much tagged off with other sample formats or even samples that're bound with sample players (like Kontakt Player/Halion Player/Stylus, etc). The same applies with AKAI btw. In the early days it was the only "highend sample format" possible. Then there was SF2, then there was GIGA as container format. Then the hardware samplers died out, so did almost the AKAI format too. You can still get AKAI sample CDs, but they're barely produced anymore. Like it happened with SF2. They're simply way better sampling possibilites now than a couple of years ago. GIGA is a sample standard. See it as "container" like SF2 toowhich includes not only the samples, but also keyswitches, program patches, effect settings (ADSR, LFO, etc). If it's professional grade is a thing that "you" determ. I can't give you free sources for GIGA samples. But if you search in google for "GIGA free download" or something like that, you can find some samples (as in term of testimonials) from the one or another thing from time to time.
