OCR01212 - *YES* Castlevania 4 'Into the Corridor of Shadows'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
a solid, varied and interesting arrangmenet, with some of the most believable winds i've heard. very nice. YES -
the drums are too repetitive, and they are too front-and-center. i think it's a strong mix otherwise, so i'd like a resubmit. NO
-
i agree that the end is wierd, but i certainly dont think it's enough to ruin the 3:45 of sweetness. YES
-
the vocals are campy, the song is on a grand total of 2 (two) chords, the bassline never changes. the production sounds good, the vocals are well recorded, and it doesnt get too repetitive because of a few interludes, some nice synthy sounding strings. very new-wave ballad. YES
-
Judging from this mix, i thought "dj friendly" meant "exactly the same as the original" until Prot straightened me out. but yeah...it sounds nice, but there's just nothing different presented. NO
-
I dont think the problem is a lack of original material, there's certainly some mixage, the problem is the drum loop gets really really aggrivating after a while. also, the mix lacks some sonic subtlety that i would like. needs some softer sounds, some more reverb. and for god's sake, mix up the drums NO
-
The guitars are kind of a turn off...i think some reverb might have helped. i like how the organ swoops in from time to time. again, some reverb would have been a good idea. Unfortunately, this mix is underdeveloped. it's too short and it doesnt expand at all. needs more. NO
-
This reminds me somewhat of graylightning's mixes. there's no huge climax, but there's always something new going on, and there's a subtle build. I really like this piece. it sounds truly cavernous, and it brings a new and interesting sound to the table. while it might border on repetitive, i think it's solidy above the bar. YES
-
The arrangement isnt bad, it's perhaps a bit simple, could benefit from a few extra layers of harmony, a few extra tensions. the problem is that the instruments sound NES-quality, and there's nothing spectacular about the mix to make me look past that fact. bump up the sound quality. NO
-
that just about covers it. perhaps the proper strategy would be to reject and push hard for a resubmit?
-
The first thing i notice is the mediocre recording on the guitar. The second thing i notice is that the harmony (non melody) guitars have some very serious rhythmical issues. all together the guitars sound messy and crowded. the third problem with this mix is a rather serious case of medlyitis. Three themes are done in 3 minutes, and none of them are developed at all. NO
-
This yells "cheese" right from the beginning,in theform of silly vocals. the guitar alternates between being flat and being sharp. it is never in tune. It really gets to me. THe low end of this mix is lacking. Is there a bass? i cant tell. the audio gets crunchy when the drums get busy. The arrangement isnt bad, but it needs some cleaning up. NO
-
Thanks for the play-by-play, "YONKO", unfortunately, while the groove to this mix is pretty cool, the elp comping, or whatever that is, sounds sweet, it never changes, the remix is repetitive, and on top of that, the harmony is only two bars long, and there are lots of changes missed. just lots of harmony missing. NO
-
the groove to this mix is really sweet. the piano is haunting, but unfortunately the remix doesnt develop and it is quite repetitive. on top of that, it's encoded at 64kbps. wtf? NO
-
there is some good fx and panning work done, but i feel that the theme and the musical aspects of the remix are too bare and thin. it's quite repetitive. a lot of hte instruments are dry. good fx, now work on the music a little more. needs more layers. NO
-
This is interesting, something new. The mix starts out akwardly, but the percussion in this mix quickly becomes a standout. Definately more of a mood mix than a harmonic masterpiece, there are just layers and layers of primal dirty musical goodness. Raw, but successful mix. YES
-
bah. the first half this song is beautiful however, the piano comping over the solo is terrible. it sounds very inorganic. The solo is also akwardly played. the mixer clearly doesnt have much experience with the blues. the mix would be much better without the solo. i feel also that it doesnt quite build enough for such a long mix. by the end it feels like more of the same. I think it's passable now, but i'd prefer to hear some retinkering. YES EDIT: Changing my vote, resubmit plz. NO

OCR01211 - *YES* Star Ocean: Blue Sphere 'Killer Dokko'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
i am not really feeling the mastering problems you claim. snappleman says the upload was messed and now the real one is up. whatever this is much more solid than most of hte metal remixes we get. the playing is tight, it isnt repetitive, it isnt too long for the style, and the instruments are separated and clear. i'd like to verify with someone that it isnt too close to the original, but for now it gets a YES -
hmm.. the elp sounds great....unfortunately it's lonely. the drums get really irritating. mix them up a bit. also add a bass. Prot, what guitar are you talking about? i didnt hear it. NO
-
it is on the repetitive side, and rather short, but it sounds nice, and the instrumentation is above average. i like it, and i'll give it a borderline YES
-
this mix is entirely too repetitive. the the bassline and the saw pads play the same two notes the whole time. it's just begging for some new ideas, some escalation, something to keep my attention. NO

*NO* Kirby's Dream Land 3 'Bob Yer Squishy Head'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
slick. simple, straightforward, welldone remixing. perhaps it's a bit repetitive, but it is ultimately rewarding. there are plenty of bad notes in the bass and harmony parts, as well as that audio glitch. unfortunately it isnt finished. you forgot to record the ending. send us the rest, fix the problems, then we'll talk. NO -
how can you lose the time signature when it's the same two drumloops the whole time? this remix has a cool sound, but it is ultimately too thin. there is the main section then the middle section. the main section is wierd in a good way, but it doesnt go anywhere. the middle section is sparse, and the whole mix lacks bass. it just doesnt build...it doesnt say anything. the ending is also weak. NO

OCR01205 - *YES* Shenmue 'Dreaming While I Wake'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
i like this. it might be a little thin on the whole but it is ultimately very pleasing. i recognize the shenmue theme, and it is most definately not a submission violation. (that bell line at the end is derived from the theme.) good stuff. YES -
you think you're so cool with your green "no". well you're not cool. well..only a little.
