  1. there are some interesting things going on in this mix. i am kind of turned off by the constant reliance on four-on-floor beats...i think the mix could be much more than it is without it... 4/4 techno over the 3/4 melody wasnt as disasterous as it might have been, but it still comes off as kind of cheap. why cant you just have a beat that....fits the time signature? i really like the section at 1:45. the section at 2:45 is not good. at all. whiny....strings? i'm guessing. ending is allright, not great. this is borderline. with some work on the aformentioned problems, i'd like to see this up. but for now, NO
  2. nice intro. like the wind...er...whales....whatever the hell it is. NOOOOOO not a 4 on teh floor dance mix! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwhgggh *dies* i'm not hearing anything remotely sophisticated, unique, or interesting. where's the beef...er...harmony? there also seem to be a lot of glitches/clipping. everything before 0:45 is great and has lots of potential. everything else is completely bland and ordinary. NO
  3. in the intro the notes are held too long, causing dissonance when the next note is played. crickets are nice. dissonance at 1:10...keeps on...uh....dissoning for a while. the tambourine is REALLY grating. different instruments cant hide the fact that there's really nothing different going on as the song goes on. there needs to be an interlude or something. sometimes the lead is too loud. 3:00 i'm bored. lets hear something new, please. lead still too loud. slight interlude...but not really. 4:00 i'm bored. lets hear something new, please. 5:00 " " " this mix is just hurting for new ideas. NO
  4. i really love the original song...plz dont have screwed it up.... some nice sounds, but the levels are off. the lead isnt loud enough. also, please, use dotted half notes on the leads instead of bouncing the note around. it's just sloppy. strings in the back are too quiet. not enough harmony going on. the strings just play dotted half notes thru the whole thing. there's really not enough going on harmonically. it's also short and doesnt go anywhere. NO
  5. most of the instruments sound like they could have been done on an SNES. maybe not the strings. i guess the biggest problem with this is that it doesnt offer a whole lot over the original. it also never really goes anywhere. we want to hear something different, please. NO
  6. this is a really basic techno track. the first minute or so are boring and bear no resemblance to the original. then the EXACT piano from the OST comes in over a double-time beat. this just isnt impressive, and it may well be a rip. NO
  7. I love matt's stuff in general, and his latest doesnt dissapoint. dark, minimalist, moody. just like he said. YES
  8. okay. i'm gonna sit my lazy ass down and judge this for Dain. the groove is very smooth. i like it. i'm not a huge fan of the lead patch starting around 1:00. it is a naked melody, no hamony. i have many of the same complaints that protricity does. it can be overly simplistic. on the other hand, i dont think this mix would sound right if it was too much more busy than it already is. I really really really like the tempo/feel changes. this mix has excellent dynamics, which is something i dont hear often enough in the mixes on the judging board. This isnt my favorite mix, but the quality is definately there. I'm going to give it a YES because we just dont hear mixes with such interesting dynamics nearly often enough. many remixers could learn a thing or two about dynamics from listening to this mix. nice work.
  9. Prot and I have different ideas of what types of harmony and dissonance sound good. this sounds good. the chords are, in fact, understated and unconventional with regard to the melody. i really just enjoyed this mix. it carries a great feel, and the quality is topnotch. Some complaints: my biggest complaint, which is a complaint i frequently have with GL's mixes, is that it doesnt build enough. He asked me what i exactly mean by this, so i'm going to try to explain as clearly as i can. so maybe that wasnt as clear as i wanted it to be. anyway, i would like to hear a more noticeable build. also, i think the lead volume is too loud throughout, and the ending should be more gradual. this gets a YES regardless, but i'd like to hear GL make some slight changes.
  10. hmm....borderlineage. there is great percussion, and the arrangement is solid. but it is awfully repetitive for a fairly short song, and the lead patches (trumpet mainly, but sax as well) are bad. i think with a better lead, i would probably give this a YES, but for now, it's a NO
  11. this mix is quite note-for-note, and the sounds are all obnoxiously fuzzy. the tempo changes are interesting, but they arent really...effective. had the feel changed as well, then it would have been a more worthwhile quirk. NO
  12. i think some sounds are better than others. the bass in the beginning does not impress me, quality-wise. similar to what the others said, this sounds good, but it doesnt go anywhere. the first...3 minutes had me. it was escalating, i figured this could be going somewhere. but it didnt go anywhere. it stayed at that level. make everything past 3 minutes more intense. BUILD NO also, some of the harmony lines bear an uncanny resemblance to "dreams in Red."
  13. this is too simple, too short, and never goes anywhere. there are no dynamics whatsoever. the only thing this mix has over all the other chrono trigger mixes is the fact that it has voice recordings....oh wait...thats been done too. NO
  14. not unpleasant, but the soundquality is subpar, the orch stabs are irritating as hell, and it follows the original pretty closely. also it repeats too much for such a short song. NO EDIT: forgot to mention the halfassed fadeout ending. VIG WANTS GOOD ENDINGS!
  15. i like the mixing, the sequencing, the musicality. but the sound quality is so lacking. all i can really say is that this mix would get a yes if the mixer got better patches. for now, a reluctant NO
  16. for the first half of this mix, i thought i would give it a yes, because there was some interesting mixage, some good dynamic changes, and a good groove. but the song goes on, and it gets repetitive, it gets repetitive, and it really doesn't go anywhere. the little EQ stunts become a bit much, and the non-existent ending clinched the NO for this one.
  17. a bit repetitive, but it earns a big fat YES from me anyway due to excessive coolness.
  18. woah...first thing that hits me are the bad notes played by the background synth...really jarring. :40 wobbly synth doesnt do anything for the feel of the song. hmm....so far i have heard several really short lines, maybe two bars each, repeated four times, switch. a lot of the synths are jarring. it is also really long and really repetitive. some decent bits, but it just goes on for too long, and it seems like the mix could have been organized better. NO
  19. this is seriously lacking in the groove department. lacking percussion and bass. the "harmony" is stupid simple, the patches are dry. could be pretty good with reworked harmony, drums and bass. NO
  20. ....hmm it sounds like everything in this song except the drums was miked from two rooms away. the arrangement is there, and the guitar playing is pretty good too, but i cant look past the *really* bad EQ. i'd like to hear this remastered, with more low end. a re-recording would be ideal, but i know that takes time. this is good stuff, just poorly recorded and mastered, so for now, NO
  21. It IS very mono, and many of the patches are very dry and GM sounding, particularly the strings. there isnt very much creativity, it just seems to be the original over drumloops. NO
  22. ack....wierdness...in the sounds. ah...this song has clipping, and it suffers from a slight case of "not enough going on besides drums and lead". fix the clipping, add more layers, more variation, and then this would be a pretty good mix. NO
  23. i agree with what prot said. i also think the harmony in the second half of the song leaves much to be desired. most of the second half is a repeating melody line over simple whole-note harmonies. not interesting. NO
  24. the bass is a little loud...there is some clipping. the drums sound....i'm not sure...a little tinny. the bass does not change notes as it should. it stays on one note for four bars at a time, creating lots of dissonance. this song repeats a helluva lot. i'm bored 2 minutes in. there are lots of cool sounds, but the ideas repeat too much and they dont develop. its not bad, it is just too long and underdeveloped. NO
  25. I would like to again give a big thanks to a fantastic mixer, a "shttyjudgefgt", and my good friend Ari Asulin for not only hosting, but encoding this mix and its 9 minute ogg counterpart. encoding a variable bitrate mp3 isnt easy, as you dont know how big it will end up, and we were kind of working under a strict 6 meg limit with a 7 minute song, so everybody give Prot a hand. -Jesse
