*NO* Tekken Tag Tournament 'Xiaoyu Beat Me Down' *FT*
Vig replied to analoq's topic in Judges Decisions
i'd just like to concur with prot that this song isnt that bad objectively, but the fact is, it offers very little if anything over the OST. -
*NO* Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Children of the Valley'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
this is simple, the harmony is 1-Dimensional. the synths sound cheap, there is little to no variation, save....whatever that thing is that comes in at 2:00...it sounds like a synth-squeaky fence gate. blah. ending=blah. this is very straightforward. i think i heard this on the WIP board way back, (if not, it was another mix that sounds just like this) and it sounds like none of the comments i made back then were taken into account. this doesnt offer anything new or interesting. NO -
i dont know what instrument that clicking noise that comes in at :22 is supposed to be, but it's ugly. what this mix boils down to is that it's repetitive and the sounds arent good. the drums are nice but they dont make up for the lack of....everything else. NO
-
the strings are quite sterile, and the harmony is quite basic and repetitive. there is really no dynamicwork here at all. it has nothing to keep the listener interested. there is instrumental build, but it just gets busier, it doesnt actually build dynamically or musically. it is uninteresting. all this and a terribly weak ending earn this a NO

ditto.

*WITHDRAWN* Xenogears 'Heartfelt Recollections'
Vig replied to Antonio Pizza's topic in Judges Decisions
this is a very nice mix. it has a definately unique feel, and it's well done. very respectable guitar synths. some issues i have: the lead guitar is questionable ...some of the rythms are the slightest bit off. i also think that bends were used too liberally, and it sounds like you were faking your way through the part. i dont like the groove change at 2:30 i do like the transition at 3:15. DAMNIT! i loved how this was ending until it ended. the transition worked so well and then i was loving the vamp you had going on, but it ended too quickly and too abruptly (two separate problems). there are things i'd definately change, but it IS a good mix, so it gets a YES -
*NO* Super Metroid 'Anatomy of the Enemy' *FT*

i'm trying to upload it for you but i keep getting an error, if you know more about this stuff than i do, (which is very likely) check out my post in the discussion forum and see if you can lend a hand. Oh, yeah, and its good to see that Dan isnt dead. congradulations on that. -
it sounds nice, and its not bad, but it sounds sterile to my ears, and it doesnt go anywhere. No ending. NO

what they said. NO

throughout the whole mix i kept thinking how nice it is. what's here is really nice. it is sonically pleasing. but also through the whole mix i kept getting ideas of where i thought the song was going, and it never really developed the way it could have. i couldnt really tell if this was intentionally minimalist or if it was just unfinished until i heard the cheap ending. NO its nice so far, but its not finished. Build. layer. add. whatever you have to do to make this song escalate and develop.

*NO* One Must Fall 2097 'CyberNetic Cage' *FT*
Vig replied to Antonio Pizza's topic in Judges Decisions
It really is quite dry. and there is quite a bit of clipping. like....lots. i like the section around :50 seconds, but its quick, and still dry. i think the song could use a background soft pad as well. there are really no dynamics. some sections shift the lead to another instrument, but the original lead doesnt come down. I think the arrangement is great, but there are technical and dynamic issues. id like to see this resubmitted with reverb/delay added, clipping fixed, and dynamics tinkered with in a big way. NO -
*NO* Stunt Race FX 'Deep Sewer Buggy Boom' *FT*

bah, slow download. i'll go to McDonalds and listen when i get back. ... *burger in hand* what have we here? reading the other judges chosen vocabulary, "abstract" and "avant garde" i strangely enough have the wingless in mind. lets hear it. i had just written up a long analysis of the various aspects of this piece, but i decided that was uneccessary. i can sum it up quite simply. this is a very ambitious project. it tries to be atmospheric/ambient and abstract/driving rock/whatever else. while there are LOTS of parts of this song that i like, i feel like they arent woven together terribly well, and there really just arent enough layers in the various sections. if timberwolf would like clarification on what i mean by this, i'd be happy to explain it more in-depth. but i feel the ambience is a bit thin and ineffective. NO i think this has significant creative value, but i think it could use more work. it could be more condensed, and more beefy. i'd like to hear what Matt has to say about this mix. -
This song has some top notch coverage already, and so any new covers have a pretty high bar to reach. i'm continuously impressed by the number of unique interpretations i've heard of this song. This mix definately has something new to offer. the groove is great, the sounds are great. nice flute solo. my only complaint is that i dont really like the bassline; i find it a little cliched and cheap. this definately gets a YES

*NO* Sonic Adventure 2 'Spawns of the Great Pumpkin'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Exhibit A OK.Exhibit B double negative. interestingExhibit C Is that even a word?its an interesting idea. a few things holding this mix back: the vocal recording is really poor. there are noticable artifacts, and the recording quality is significantly lower than the other instruments. it sticks out. the musical aspect isnt bad...at first...but this song is repetitive as hell. i know, its rap. ok. fine. thats not an excuse for boring me with that same piano line playing throughout the whole song. i dont understand myself why big name rappers dont have "B-Section" beats or lines in their songs. it seems like SOMEBODY would be doing it by now. anyway the lyrics are...questionable at times. some are better than others. i really didnt hold the lyrics against the song when i made my decision to give this a NO -
very cool, but its barely two minutes. make longer, and resubmit. NO

*NO* Super Metroid 'Anatomy of the Enemy' *FT*

EDIT: er...well...when i listened to this song the first few times i was on antibiotics for both strep throat and bronchitis...and listening to it again...this is just....not...good. my sinuses and ears must have been quite clogged for me to not notice (or not be bothered by the fact) that this is EXACTLY the original with a drumloop and a mediocre guitar. NO -
Here's a mix from DarkeSword that he submitted 3 months ago. it sounds pretty cool. i'll vote later. UPDATE: bitrate ceiling version: USE THIS FILE INSTEAD

i see what malcos is saying, this mix is very low-end intensive, but i think this was somewhat intended to give a kind of underwater effect. it is repetitive, but that comes with the territory in this genre. i also think some of the delay goes overboard. this is borderline for me, but i'll give it a EDIT er...this is 22hz!? (listens again). bah...ever since quicktime hijacked my computer i cant tell these things. on a second listen (this time i'm not deleriously sick and i dont have clogged ears) the signal degradation is quite apparent. this mix was VERY borderline for me in the first place, but we simply need to have a better recording. NO

well if we are voting as is, i simply cant pass this. NO please send a better encoding.

OCR01004 - *YES* Altered Beast 'The Fallen's Grave'
Vig replied to m68030's topic in Judges Decisions
nice. it builds nicely. good dynamics. i also think it could be longer. anyway, its solid, so YES -
quite repetitive. once again, NO HARMONY TO SPEAK OF! i will NOT vote yes on a mix that has such a blatant lack of depth or texture. this just doesnt offer anything new or interesting. NO

OCR00991 - *YES* Final Fantasy 4 'Tororian Love Song'
Vig replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
decent guitar playing. minus 5 points for use of the word "just". plus 5 points for use of word "whence" i think the piano could be busier during the guitar solo. minus 5 points for more cliched love lyrics. in all seriousness, its a strong and interesting mix. well done. YES -
NO but i'd also like to see a resubmit. weave the two together.
-
about as deep as the cheerleading squad. there is 0 harmony, and thats not an exaggeration. this mix is just the melody played in octaves over a beat. this isnt really an arrangement. NO
-
hmm the guitar is out of tune often. vibrato is one thing, but you want to keep the notes consistently in tune. the guitar is also too dry. it sticks out from the rest of the song. too short, and there isnt enough development. the lead guitar needs some work. NO
