  1. That's odd. Might be a problem specific to your setup, or possibly reaper. Does that happen with two instances of sfz with any (even small) soundfonts loaded?
  2. Sorry Dan, I don't understand all of this technical mumbo-jumbo.
  3. I actually think the thin guitar fits the mood nicely, better than something with lots of thump and crunch would anyway. I'm not so sure about the pinch harmonics at 2:04 and 2:07 though. They aren't in key and sound like they're there just for the sake of being there. Gotta compliment the slick drums. Interesting work as a whole guys. Lyrics for the non-instrumental version: Some people stand in the darkness, afraid to step into the light. Some people need to help somebody when the edge of surrender's in sight. Don't you worry! It's gonna be alright. 'cause I'm always ready, I won't let you out of my sight.
  4. Hmm, I suppose I hadn't considered that. Although I wonder what musical impact something that slow has over the sound. Listen to a metronome at 300 BPM (aka 5Hz). Does something that intermittent really have a tonal quality that will add to or detract from a mix? I was actually thinking more in terms of the psychoacoustic idea that the fundamental frequency can be perceived through only harmonics, even though the fundamental frequency might not actually be present. Then, if harmonics are present above the actual range of perception, a fundamental freq that may actually be perceptible can be heard. That wouldn't work if the speakers didn't actually play the non-perceptible frequencies. I don't know much about it, but from what I've read that's what I've gathered. But you're right, that idea and aliasing are different.
  5. Plenty of good headphones feature frequency responses out of typical range of human perception. Out of curiosity, does anyone know why? Sure, high freq sounds can get aliased back to low freq sounds so I can see some purpose in having higher than a 20kHz response. The DT880 reportedly have a 5Hz low end response though. What's the purpose?
  6. Haha, lol. Simple but perfect from note #1! I might have gone with the "Earth Angel" stylistic comparison too if an acute case of insomnia hadn’t recently led me to the Turner Classic Movies channel where I was treated to the 1959 musical flick "Go, Johnny, Go!" (another song from “Back to the Future” ). The movie was cheesy for sure, but I loved the vocals and this mix catches the vibe to a tee. Great voice and great work man.
  7. To the Family and Friends of Reuben: I believe that one of the greatest accomplishments that any of us can make in this life is to do something that will be remembered fondly after we are gone. Reuben has done this by humbly sharing the gift of his creativity with the world. For that, although I had never met or spoken with him, I consider him a great person and someone whom I would have liked to have called a friend. Even though it is easy and understandable for grief to fill your hearts when remembering him, I hope that it is some consolation that the sadness that we all feel is in part a testament to the happiness that Reuben’s art has given to so many, and the smiles that it will continue to evoke for many years to come. Sincerely and with Warmest Wishes, Brandon Bush
  8. Nice. This ongoing love affair that you have with pitch-bend is a very good thing
  9. www.kvraudio.com -- download. click a preset. inspire!! Works for me every time. Or if you're of the wealthier persuasion: www.zzounds.com -- purchase. receive. inspire!!
  10. Genre descriptions make my head hurt, but if you're after hard/punk/speed/metal/etc, Melt Bananna probably fits somewhere in there and they rock. Also, Milka is a great band out of Orlando FL that are a little softer and more towards the pop side of things. Maybe too close to that Evanescence vibe sometimes, but I thought I'd put in a good word for them anyway.
  11. All any music store has to do around here to stay open is be located in a convenient location and charge reasonable prices. The closest Guitar Center to the U. Maryland campus is not easily accessible to most students (esp those without cars), and the other music stores either have an extremely limited selection or extremely ridiculous prices. I'm talking above MSRP
  12. Not to discourage you from looking for a collab, but in spite of what you may think, you can get OCR quality results with very little money. If you already have a computer, you're more than half-way there. Check out the mixing for free guide and Zircon's gear guide for ways to get by on $0. Since you are a vocalist/pianist, a mic for your vocals will cost you $10 and a super cheap Casio 61-key keyboard can be found for $80. You actually might find a keyboard cheaper than that somewhere, but just make sure the keys are velocity sensitive and it has a midi connection. Yeah you might have to beg borrow and "borrow" to get that money to start off with, but it will be worth it Good Luck
  13. Agreed. I was all ready to complain about what I assumed would be a good but obvious imitation of a piano...but there's nothing in the demos that feels anything but authentic or at the worst, sampled.
  14. Yeah I could see it being thought of as gimmicky, but the idea of putting "Reuben Dies" as a site announcement just would feel a little odd for me. And again, highlighting his music on the main page would mainly be to catch the people who are less likely to read a thread. I'm all for a letter to be sent to his family though. We have some great writters here, but I've always thought that djp is especially talented at getting across an idea through words. Add to that the fact that he is the site admin and my hopes are for Dave to step in and represent our community with the english version of the letter. Agreeing in part with zyko, whatever we do as a community, we should get on with it like Nario and others have.
  15. OK, that's not quite true... we've voted on numerous mixes using drumloops, even prominently, and passed them anyway (knowing full well they were just default FL, or Reason, or Garageband, or w/e.) It's by a case-by-case basis, but generally speaking, the loop just can't CARRY the mix. See what I'm saying? Like if it's a drum-centric style (eg. drum n' bass) and the primary drum pattern is a Reason default, yeah, that might not bode well, but if it's pop rock and you use one, well, that's not as bad. Exactly, as in this fine example and descision.
  16. The Reuben Roulette idea was just something simple to increase awareness, not replace any tribute/letter/statue that might be planned. IMO the roulette would be a little less showy than an official OCR announcement but would still gets people's attention. In the end, it would only help with any other more "heart felt" actions that are taken.
  17. http://www.reubenkee.com/demos.htm Larry also posted his other internet hangouts earlier in this thread (at VG Frequency).
  18. It would be cool if the Russian ReMix Roulette was temporarily changed to a Reuben Remix Roulette (yeah only 7 OC ReMixes, but still). For those who don't visit the forums enough to see this thread, it would give his work a little more exposure and get a few more people talking and thinking about him. Just a thought.
  19. You really don't need a keyboard, although that might make music creation faster. Assuming you're on a Mac, just get yourself a sequencer like Logic Express or Ableton, or even FL Studio if you want to go the Boot Camp route. With some practice and a few good tips you'll be making the hotness in no time. EDIT: Beat to the punch by Zircon
  20. Exactly. So while you can make an international #1 hit single that relies almost entirely on a Garageband drum loop, that garbage ain't gonna fly here at OCR. Jay-Z, Rhianna and The Dream get a NO (please resubmit)
  21. Sadly, Reuben Kee and four other men lost their lives in a boating accident this weekend. http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13286 His music lives on.
  22. More info might help. What type of controller are you using? Have you inadvertently changed the default pitch bend range on it? Are all of your synths showing this behavior? To diagnose the problem I would record a midi track and move my pitch wheel to its extreme upper and lower positions. Then, look at the recorded values. Depending on your sequencer, the values should go from -127 through +127, or -8192 through +8191, or from 0 through +16383. If not then either your wheel is busted, the sequencer is not properly reading the wheel's output, or something along those lines. If the range is correct, I would suspect that some settings in the synths are the problem.
