A little over a year later, however, I decided it was suitable for lyrics and said, "hey, why not give it a shot?", improved the instrumentals slightly, and added my own vocals. Yeah, the lyrics are sappy ( http://www.azure.co.nr/music/remixes/distantworld.html) but I've never actually tried writing lyrics before, and this was the easiest topic to dive into. I made the instrumentals with Madtracker and free samples I managed to collect over the years. I used Adobe Audition 2.0 to improve the sound quality a bit, as well as recorded the vocals with a 20 dollar Behringer mic. I figured I'd submit this to you guys even if the sound quality isn't quite up to par with your standards. Nevertheless, enjoy!

While I'm glad the 8-bit sounds are apparently not direct-sampled, it still doesn't help in this context to be using them to provide the core of the arrangement. IMO, the overall feel of the melody isn't different enough at all; it just has some layered harmonies with the verbatim structure. All of the embellishments here with the other instrumentation were cool and added some nice personalization to the track, though I would have preferred usage of those sounds beyond mostly a supplementary role to the 8-bit leads. 2:17-2:43 moved over into some somewhat awkwardly performed woodwind harmonies, I believe, before moving back into the 8-bit sounds. 3:59's section dropped the NES sounds and closed it mostly with original material, referring to the theme (and the arrangement intro) briefly at the very end. As is though, most of the usage of the source material is in the 8-bit sounds, which we discourage if relied on too heavily, as we're also about upgrading music created by limited hardware. If you had creatively interpreted the 8-bit melody AND also built the track more substantially with the higher-grade instrumentation and effects, I could have been more persuaded to pass this. Don't be discouraged though. You always submit really interesting material that just happens not to fit our standards. I'm not criticizing any of your material as poor pieces of music. NO (resubmit)

Some instruments were re-sampled and it was re-recorded with slight changes to the mix, specifically with OCR in mind. The faces are different, the attitudes are different and it's time I showed some love. Let's hope it stays that way.

  7. I think I'll try a "safe" submission in light of the massive lulz that was my last effort at pleasing the OCR judicial system. This song is basically "Path-ology Take 2" so theoretically it should pass... right ? Interesting factoid: it is track 1 from the Cave Story Remix Project. The track remixed is "Living Waterway." p.s. after this then I have another one that is similar but I will send that one after you guys are done with this one k? :3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cave Story - (21) "Living Waterway" Interesting minimal opening. Melody arrived at :22 on a wind instrument, with some mechanical-style beats entering in at :45. Not much in the way of texture, but we'll see if this is leading to anything. The overall volume level is definitely too low. Ok, some new stuff at 1:07, placing the countermelodic material pretty far in the background with some Follin-esque trills from 1:07-1:26, before moving back into the main arranged melody at 1:30. 1:52 moved over into another section of the source with the Follin-esque trills brought back until 2:11. 2:15 arranged another section of the source before revisiting at 3:00 for the last section. The textures could be criticized, but I feel they were adequate enough and offered something different than what we normally get. Man, you definitely don't use harmonies much, as I've come to learn. My main criticism would be the sheer repetition of the industrial-style backing percussion at the core of the track repeated ad nauseum from :44-3:23 and countermelody from 1:52-3:00 causing the entire thing to drag and feel way too repetitive. The original does the same thing repeating its backing patterns the whole time, but you're supposed to be taking it to a new level, and your arrangement is a lot longer than the Cave Story track which makes the repetition level of that percussion a significant problem. Arrangement-wise, there's variations and subdued dynamic changes otherwise, and the interpretation of the source material is ok. Reworking the percussion and that countermelody to change, evolve and integrate more with the rest of the arrangement would be a meaningful plus. You should revisit this one, it could end up a lot more interesting if you were willing to. NO (resubmit)
  8. Well I'm glad I have a new computer available to me with a good sound card, because I cut this one a lot of slack compared to what I'm hearing now. That's twice lately, so I joked that the panel should put me out to the glue factory. This isn't a terrible cover by any means, but in re-comparing this track to the sources, the melodies are mainly just layered up (which is what threw me off on my expansionist POV), so there's a lot more body to this piece compared to the originals, but not much interpretive substance. Any new countermelodic stuff was only there in passing, with CHz giving a good breakdown of both the additive and interpretive features. One thing I disagree on is the track's structure. Yes, the transitions are pure medleyitis, but they were smooth and didn't break the flow of the track at all. A more interpretive arrangement that had transitions of this nature would be fine, but development and interpretation of the source tunes is the major dealbreaker here. While the production quality was a bit crowded but otherwise fine enough for the bar, clearly most of the writing was near-verbatim with the source tunes, and there's not enough arrangement interpretation upon a relisten. Cool track though, Ironhit. We're definitely not saying this is a poor track, just not an interpretive enough treatment of the themes you arranged. I'd definitely be glad to hear you submit more material in the future, and I'm looking forward to it. NO

When I noticed that it uses a simple 12-bar blues scale I tried to fool around with it and came up with something that made me happy to listen to. -------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/nsf/iceclimr.zip - Track 1 Pretty basic, bland bucket drum style opening picked up by the geetar fading in around :08. Possibly could have shaved something off the intro, but it's too serious a criticism as I see the build you were going for. Bassline joined in at :17 to the get the foundation of the theme in place, coasting for quite a while at that level. The melody finally arrived at :58 on a pretty tacky e-piano that didn't have much presence; not a particularly strong choice of lead given how it's produced. The melodic interpretation value was pretty low. Not really getting too much going on beyond the basic genre adaptation. The dropoff of instrumentation from 1:39-1:59 wasn't a bad idea in theory but left the track feeling very empty and exposed the lack of realism of the drumkit. Added a little funk guitar stuff on another iteration of the source at 1:59 before going for the gradual fadeout close at 2:20. Kind of a tease at more development of the arrangement, but ultimately not much anyway. The sample quality was also a low point. The groove/overall flow was ok but the timing still felt rather robotic and rigid over the long haul. Even if you can't step up the sample quality itself, there should be more finesse in the sequencing so that the performance sounds more human, which is more important. I'll leave it to the others to provide better insight at that level. Beyond the genre adaptation, the arrangement never really picked up besides doing a pretty basic cover of the theme. You really need to get more creative with the theme and give it a more personalized and unique interpretation within the framework of the genre. Solos, melodic alterations, new countermelodies, anything would have made the end result more interesting. A decent base, but too cover-ish and undeveloped an arrangement. NO

That could be done afterwards in the credits, followed by a pimp of his own website so that crediting the songs doesn't take focus away from promoting himself and the videos.

I want it to sound more powerful and also to be more easy to listen to. Therefore I decreased the tempo and I put in a pretty heavy bass. The song was created with Reason together with cubase for mastering. /br joynes ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://project2612.org/download.php?id=135 - "The Shinobi" Pretty blistering on the treble, but not feeling too annoying because it tends to be in short bursts and not a sustained level of earbreak. . Really needs some serious EQ adjustments and better balancing. Besides that, the sound choices for the lead and support are pretty ugly, IMO; they don't lend to good-sounding textures. 2:33 is just way too barren with that cheap synth lead, even with the addition of more elements at 2:41. The closing section at 4:02 with the faux electric guitar is just ugly; it's a promising idea that wasn't pulled off well in my opinion. The interpretation factor is noted, as the first minute or so of the arrangement teases at the original in a somewhat supporting-level role, placing it more in the background compared to the original writing up front until 1:11. The melody of "The Shinobi" was altered, but it was still basically the verbatim theme only a lot less melodious; not something I could consider an improvement. From a personalization level, this was at least in the right direction in terms of adding more substance to the groove and giving the track more body, but the melodic interpretation was still low. Gonna have to leave it to the others to offer more specific criticism with regards to improvement, as there are other angles that I can't articulate, but it boiled down to weak melodic arrangement, some areas with weaker textures, and mixing/EQing issues all leading to NO.
