  1. Wait does that mean that those songs are technically not originally made for the game so they shouldn't be on OCR? I sure hope not, and I would think that this has been addressed long before I started coming here, so don't mind this noob comment then. http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=2556890#2556890
  2. http://www.tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/FFX_psf2.rar - 301 "Thunder Plains" Much love to the original track, a favorite of mine for years. Weird intro, as I dunno if it's supposed to sound like static or sea waves. I sincerely hope it wasn't meant to sound like water. Anyway, theme comes in right at :08, pretty similar to the original but with more gentile sounds. Some light percussion and a decent glassy synth entered at :23. Beats coming in at :39 were pretty tame and their dryness didn't quite gel with the rest of the instrumentation. The water SFX faded too quickly out of the background at :40, sounding rather cheap. Track just kind of chugs along politely with a very conservative take on the source, plus all these added pad/synth/beat embellishments. 1:42 adds even more ideas into the background with a new bassline, but the source theme isn't being interpreted at all. Same tempo, fairly similar instrumentation ideas. The strings from 2:24-2:31 were pretty fake and exposed. The section at 2:32 was a little less troublesome with the strings, as you did some decent layering, but they still sounded robotic and dry. Started playing some scales at 2:48, but you probably should have stopped after 8 bars at 3:04, as the idea isn't interesting enough to carry the track for another 16 seconds. Decent more breakbeatish section from 3:20 playing with the beats and bassline more, only to completely move onto something else at 3:35; too bad, there was at least more potential there than I observed in other parts. Yeah, get things more interpretive where it counts with reinterpreting the actual stuff cribbed from "Thunder Plains", then post the in-progress stuff to the Works forum to obtain feedback before trying to submit it again. It also wouldn't hurt to consult our ReMixing forum and seek out how to give more depth and realism to your sounds.
  3. EVE Online - Ambient015 Thanks for providing the source. When I feel the compulsion to steal, I do it from the best, i.e. I quoted TO, because you should read what he said more than once. TO's right on point with the lack of energy and complexity. You've gotta flesh this one out substantially and also achieve a more realistic feel to the performance, which is very rigid right now. You've got a decent WIP/base, but that's all this is. NO
  4. Hello OC ReMix lads and ladetts! I had a listen to the Immortal 2 Amiga-remix-album the other week, and the James Pond 2 remake on it (despite being made by Richard Joseph himself) left me pretty unimpressed. My "vision" was of a more ska oriented nature, with a touch of 1960's surf rock (I blame an excess Robert Johnson and Punchdrunks consumption for that). Anyway, "själv är bäste dräng" as the Swedish saying goes! I had to put my own mind to it, and here's the result: It's pretty short, I know, but surf rock should be short and intense. Plus, the original doesn't give you much more to work with. So instead of making my own stuff up (this is pretty much a 1:1 cover/remix) to make it longer, and wanting to avoid it getting repetitive, I decided against any further adding to the tune. I hope you enjoy it, and find it to be OC ReMix-worthy! Regards, Makke ----------------------------------------------------- http://www.exotica.org.uk/tunes/archive/Authors/Game/Joseph_Richard/James_Pond_2.lha - Title (cust.title) Yeah, this is a great upgrade, and you certainly weren't a slouch in trying to personalize the cover approach and flesh out the instrumentation. I dunno about Joseph's version (I'd love to hear it to compare), but this WOULD be great on an arrange album, As far as it goes for the standards, however, the structure is indeed basically 1:1 with the original. The interpretation factor is just too low here. I know you're a guy who sees things as "what's done is done", but I would have loved to have heard this with other ideas added to the picture. Looking forward to whatever you have in store next, Marcus, even though this one is a NO-go.

  6. Couple o' months. Honestly, it's a lower priority vs. all the other stuff currently going on.
  7. Agreed. Yeah, I goofed on this one for some reason. Sorry 'bout that. I have no idea why I made the mistake. Simfiles probably aren't sorted properly. No worries. We fixed it. Mouse has a co-credit now as well.
  8. http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ct - "The Day the World Revived" (ct-2-06.spc) Listen to zircon. Cool intro, definitely. Beyond that though, there was little development of the source theme; this brief mix being at such a slow tempo meant little in the way of substance. Some weak beats underneath the original added at :35. Strings added at :52 sounded fairly unrealistic, and only provided minor embellishment for a very conservative approach. You gotta be more. NO
  9. http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ct - "Battle with Magus" (ct-2-24.spc) Nice arrangement. Beyond the overall volume though, there's just some ridiculously ear-breaking, blistering moments in here that could have easily been done away with (e.g. :10, 1:26, 2:10, 2:44, 3:22). Beatdrop cares not for my ears or yours. When dropping the beat, one cannot be bothered by such things. YES
  10. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=159 - "Rise or Fall" zirc has it covered on both arrangement and production criticisms. Boring, uncreative arrangement until you at least (briefly) changed the sounds up into something slightly different at 2:43. You gotta do more...and you didn't. NO
  11. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=37 - "Oil Ocean Zone" I agreed with Malcos the whole way. The textures employed here didn't sound right at all, and this was a mishmash of decent sounds with poor ones. The arrangement was too conservative and undeveloped, but you at least tried to personalize the approach. Still, it took you until 1:43 of a 2:05-long mix to even get interpretive with the source tune, rather than merely cover it with different instruments. The track had no ending; poop on that. Decent stuff for a beginner, but you've got a long way to go. Make use of the ReMixing and Works forums to help you get there. NO
  12. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=61 - "Marble Zone" A more creative name for you arrangement would be nice. The basic beats in the beginning are really plain and boring. Interesting handling of the chorus at 1:05, indeed. Wish the textures here were more creative and complex, without the inclusion of so many generic sounding synth tones. Straightfoward rendition of the source with the arpeggiated synths at 2:24 was really cluttered and tacky sounding. The idea loses it luster after you hear it going on and on. That beat from the very beginning anchoring the whole thing barely changed up, so I was glad when it finally changed up at 3:17. Nice stuff at 3:45 to finally get something interesting going on. Too bad you didn't use that idea earlier on in the song to spice up the arrangement. Decent concept, but bland execution. The conservative parts of the arrangement dragged this down a lot, whereas the other areas had more promise. zircon had some good ideas from your previous submission that would improve this one as well. You just need to explore more unique sounds and futher personalize your arrangements. NO
  13. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=61 - "IceCap Zone 1" http://www.zophar.net/vgm/sonic.zip - "Scrap Brain Zone" (:37-:50 of the source, 2:10-2:43) http://project2612.org/download.php?id=58 - "Volcano Valley Zone 1" (countermelody of :36-1:05 of the source, 2:43-3:15) EDIT (9/10): Yeah, I definitely wasn't piecing the connections well when I initially voted on this one, my apologies. Thanks to Jefferson for the source tune breakdown, as well as Vig for making sure we had an opportunity to reexamine the arrangement. I dunno why I wasn't connecting that IceCap arrangement; it's pretty apparent and very creatively handled to boot. The rhythm change completely threw me off beforehand, but now that I recognize it I love the interpretation there. Even the very beginning was itself an arrangement of the IceCap Zone's introduction. The cameo uses of the other two source themes were extremely well integrated within the IceCap arrangement. On the arrangement side, the concept is definitely a strong pass. However, looking back up top... ^ I'm sure zirc will be able to better appreciate the arrangement side of this one with your additional info, Jeff. But the really crucial points he made below were regarding the performance quality. Stuff like the ending at 4:47 where it ends gently then has a REALLY fake pounding of the keys just sounded very unrefined. That's just the most glaring example. Work on providing additional complexity for each hand's part in the mix, and hit the ReMixing forum far and wide to research how to achieve a more natural-sounding performance. NO (refine/resubmit)
  14. Yeah, I saw your name elsewhere in an interview with Ceracryst from years ago. Props on your second half here. We're a few years late, but I'm glad I secured your co-credit. http://www.ocremix.org/remixer/cheez80/
  15. http://www.zophar.net/nsf/megaman2.zip - Tracks 1 ("Title" - :00-1:33), 9 ("Shadowman Stage" - 1:33), 18 (Protoman's theme - 2:54-3:00), 7 ("Snakeman Stage" - 3:32-4:13), 13 ("Boss" - 4:13-5:16), & 16 ("Ending" - 5:18-6:59/end) Wish this was encoded in VBR so it sounded less lossy, but this was pretty well performed. The drum samples are pretty lame, like Jon mentioned. The snare in particular doesn't sound real and the tone is generic/out-of-the-box. Particularly weak transition at 3:00, IMO, but nothing to cry about. Despite the conservative arrangement and weaker transitions (some much better than others) the performance was heavily personalized, which is where any ReMix needs to compensate in order to pass when it goes conservative. The countermelodic work in particular was well handled. Writing new parts & adding character and uniqueness to the presentation of the existing parts gets the job done here. Great debut, Scott! Hope to hear more from ya. YES
  16. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=61 - "Robotnik 1" The theme arranged here is in both S3 and S&K, so I'm ok with crediting it to S&K. We allow the artist to attribute the track to basically whatever game they want, as long as it's from there. Piano sample opening things up doesn't sound very realistic, but is performed decently and also had some nice effects on there to compensate for the sounds. Nice segue at :59 to some tite beats. Lead comes in at 1:16 and is really too dominated by the beatwork, but the clean production makes it less of an issue than if other people did the same thing. Very tasteful use of the Sonic 3 SFX at 1:49, especially the spring noise being played around with like that. Excellent changeup in the lead instrumentation at 2:06; same at 2:23 to keep it moving. Great way to come up with a creative (albeit liberal) and sophisticated arrangement of a 26-second-long source tune. The track evolved very skillfully. Props on a winner, Steve. YES
  17. http://project2612.org/download.php?id=61 - "Mushroom Hill Zone" & "Knuckles' Theme (Sonic 3)" Opens up rather abruptly and tepidly with the Mushroom Hill Zone stuff. Not really feeling the percussion there, but oh well. Nice changeup at :17 though, even though the texture still seems really empty. Steve messed with some of the progression of the original with the variation at :27. Some guitar synth-like stuffs at :45 that's decent, but the texture still sounds really thin regardless. It's somewhat of a holdover issue from his previous OC ReMix, Mega Man 2 "The Fifth Season". 1:03 builds off the Mushroom Hill Zone before seguing into some seemingly original material at 1:21. Tight usage of the Knuckles' theme at 1:40 at the foundation of the track. Some flat-out weird synth soloing was on top of that and didn't seem to have much rhyme or reason. Definitely could have used more direction. Switches back into the chorus of Mushroom Hill Zone nicely as the Knuckles theme faded out nicely. Some more variations on the theme. Even though I'm not really feeling the arrangement choices as much as others would, I have to give props to the constant instrumental variations here used to keep things fresh. Nice ideas at 3:37 for the last section, though the transition to it was too abrupt IMO. In any case, this was a very liberal/mostly original take with Mushroom Hill as the base going toward the fadeout close. Not my cup of tea, but the work put into the arrangement was good; good instrumet variation, and very personalized handling of the source material. I still think Steve's stuff tends to sounds a bit thin, and that the arrangement could sound less meandering, but he's certainly getting the job done. YES
  18. I agree 100% with your baseless comment. Because mixes #1492, #1493, #1494, #1495 and #1496 are definitely not either a) predominantly played live or completely played live. Clearly, we need to keep out any mixes like that. Pick anything posted in the last 3 years, and I'm sure it would fall into the "ultra-synth" category. Understandably, that is all we allow.
  19. "R3" is the most significant figure in the name "R3FORGED"... Redeemed Relinquished Reforged ...hence the R3. :\ As long as there's a method to the madness, that's all I need to hear.
  20. pretty sure you know who i am. Earthbound Scaraba The song itself is titled "Scars". The remix features a bassline borrowed from an obscure live performance of the X-Japan song with the same name. In a way, it's my posthumous tribute to the colorful and much beloved guitarist who wrote that song. ------------------------------------------------ http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=mo2 - "Bazaar" (mo2-098.spc) Props to Bound Together (and Mythril Nazgul especially) for giving this source tune the love it deserved wth "Da Black Market". Opens up with some nice synths effects before some synth geetar comes in there at :11. Bit fakey but nothing bad. Drum pattern arrived at :36 with some industrial overtones while the synths did a nice job of playing around the stereo field. Drum pattern was pretty plain and repetitive and the "Bazaar" melody at 1:11 was rather buried under the rest of the instrumentation. Would have worked better if it wasn't that one shrill line with such rigid timing. Little organic perc work thrown in there at 1:23, but didn't blend in well with the rest of the sounds; sounded stapled on top. Arrangement of the melody is basically just that one shrill synth playing the melody verbatim with some minor embellishments from the guitar, which was a letdown. Cool brief section with the voices from 2:11-2:22; great potential, but all too brief. Some new guitar writing at 2:23 looked like it was taking the arrangement in a new direction, except it turned out it was just a new part added into another iteration of the previous 2 minutes. Changed over at 3:23-3:47 into an arrangement of the chorus finally ("Right Now"/Van Halen-ish), though that drum pattern never changed. The change in tone of the whole piece was rather jarring in a bad way; felt like the idea was barely explored and didn't thematically connect with the rest of the song. The backing parts on cruise control became plodding; there's potential for a better-developed interpretation of the "Bazaar" melody, as it was definitely lacking here. This kind of track doesn't have to be bland, repetitive and underdeveloped; I can't imagine X Japan sounds like that. Sorry, Tim. I like your stuff, and I'm sure you're happy with it the way it is, but it's far from your strongest. NO (rework/resubmit)
  21. ReMixer Name: Fishy Real Name: Cain (or Kenny) McCormack Fishy1618@gmail.com Website: http://fishy1618.googlepages.com/home Forum ID: Fishy Game remixed: Final Fantasy X Song Remixed: Thunder Plateau "Electric Rainbow" is my first submission, and is very odd coming from me as there's absolutely no guitar playing in it. It's a very mellowed out, calm version of a very jumpy, bouncy song that i think has a very nice chilled feel. It's got various "synth-struments" (as some guy put it) and some nice strings here and there with a hint of reverse drums for effect. I was inspired to make this when i was testing out my midi keyboard, i was just playing about with the main theme and decided to lay down a bit on the matrix, and i just kept adding to it. Pretty much everything was done real time triggering and there's lots of improvising with the main theme, the leads pretty much go wherever i felt like going at the time, which gives it a nice free feel i think. Anyway, there it is.
  22. Greetings. A few years ago, I submitted a song but it never got to the consideration part. Maybe you guys did not like, maybe I did something wrong. Long story short, I have made several Phantasy Star remixes over the years and my friends keep bugging me to try again, so here. * Your ReMixer name : Aeroprism * Your real name : Sebastien * Your email address : * Your website : none * Your userid (number, not name) on our forums : None yet. · Name of game(s) ReMixed : Phantasy Star 2 · Name of individual song(s) ReMixed : Rise or Fall (original) Rise and Triumph (remix) · Additional information about game if it has not yet been added to the site, including composer, system, etc. : N/A · Link to the original soundtrack if it is not one of the sound archives already available on the site: N/A · Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc.: One of my favorite songs, it was only natural that I start with this one. Made with Reason 2.5, inspired a little by a midi track I once heard. Close to the original one, I didn't feel like going too far on this one. Some of the other PS remixes I did are more original but it was important for me to submit this one first. I tried to keep a Genesis feel to the drums and I figured that trumpets would be the last instrument people would expect hearing in this song's chorus. Anyways, here it is. Have a good one! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aeroprism
  23. ReMixer name: LoopyThePirate Real name: Darrell Reconose E-mail address: loonylupin06@yahoo.com Website: http://www.myspace.com/loopythepirate Game remixed: The Legend of Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time Song remixed: Gerudo Valley Link to song: Comments: My first OCR submission! This is an instrumental rock version of the Gerudo Valley theme from OoT. My hat goes off to Darangen, whose "Falling Back" was the inspiration behind this track. I was going for a high-tech space rock sound that my side proejct The Alien Paradox (http://www.myspace.com/thealienparadox) is known for. Perhaps what was going on in my head was that I wanted it to sound as if Gerudo Valley was "Gerudo Highway" in the 30th century, hence the title. ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.zophar.net/usf/lozusf.rar - 68 "Gerudo Valley" http://www.ocremix.org/remix/OCR01435/ - "Falling Back" Offhand, we only have 2 sets of ReMixes where one mix was directly inspired by another. "Wily Meets Flash Man"/"Dr. Wily Haunts Flash Man" and "Blue"/"Blue (Shooting Star Mix)". The first set was from NoppZ and later Mattias Holmgren inspired by NoppZ. The second was Ziwtra, with Ziwtra later choosing to update the original version of the mix. You listen and compare them and you see how dramatically different both sets of mixes are. Much like the standard we demand for the arrangement of an original VGM tune, if you're going to go for an arrangement inspired by a preexisting arrangement, it's important that your new track still creatively stand apart from the inspiration. This, IMO, does not do that. "Falling Back" is primarily guitar-based, and so is this one, basically using all the same riffs and arrangement ideas that Darangen used, only not as cohesively put together. Playing the vocal parts with the guitar instead was pretty cool and it takes skill to learn the parts, but doesn't get the job done on presenting a different enough arrangement compared to Darangen's. Why was the drumwork so loud at :48? Tone it down. Decent guitar wank ideas at 2:19 for the soloing with the piano underneath, which proceeded to completely fall apart at 2:31 as those terrible drums got added, cluttering the whole soundfield while the guitar and piano decided to get crazy and the overall volume seemed to go up. Terrible idea to throw in the machine-gun drums at 3:05, as it didn't fit with the rest of the sounds. The vox used in that section was barely audible; scrap it anyway, since it sounds cheap and tacky. You have some great energy here along with some potentially impressive flourishes on guitar, Darrell, but that all got undermined by the cluttered soundfield and poor production. The parts adapted from "Falling Back" are too similar to Darangen's to fit in with the standards here. You've gotta get away from the same tempo and/or same rhythmical changes he used and go for something that pays homage to his mix but also stands alone was yours. For the sections you had where you didn't nearly follow "Falling Back" to the T, the production was simply unwieldy and hampered the performance. Keep working on this though. It's got good potential. NO
  24. Hello, I recently completed a recording that I would like to be considered to be put on the site. This is the first "ReMix" I've done, but I think it came out nicely. Here's all the info: ReMixer Name: M2S7N Email Address: mfzb.moneen@gmail.com Name of game ReMixed: Super Mario Bros. 3 Name of individual song ReMixed: World Map 5 (The Sky) Comments: As the first serious ReMix of a video game song I've done, I wanted to do something simple, and it doesn't get much more simpler than the I - IV progression used in this song. Simple songs can be very good songs though, as Koji Kondo has shown time and time again. I recorded all instruments myself, with the exception of the drums, which were programmed, so there's a human element to the song. I wanted to stay true to the original and not add much outside of the basis of the song which is the I - IV progression, but there are obvious instrumentation changes, new rhythms and small parts, a slower tempo, and more of a dub feel, which should be obvious when listening. Overall I think it deviates enough from the original to be considered for the site. Thanks The song can be found here: ---------------------------------------------------- Ha! This sounds a lot like something weed could whip up in a few minutes. zykO liko! Y'all cousins? Not too interpretive on the arrangement here to start, but all of it at least plays off of the melody and countermelody of the original. The synths and guitar don't quite gel together when they're both in play, IMO, but it's not bad. Kind of hard to get something substantial out of a 2:19-long arrangement, and you did try to develop the piece a lot by adding more and more stuff as it went on (especially after 1:38), but there's a lot more potential for the arrangement than what's in place right now. Would like to see the piece extended and further developed by adding some wholly original or extremely sections, since everything's based on that straightforward progression and tends to feel too samey after a while. I like the direction this one's headed in though. NO (resubmit)
  25. Hi, Blew the dust off an old unfinished remix of mine and really worked hard the last few days improving the production quality. It's basically the themes from Oil Ocean Zone but done in an Electronic/Orchestral fusion style, though it's hard for me to really give it a genre. I've tried my best to get it to OC Remix quality, but if you don't think it is that standard I'd really appriciate some feedback ReMixer name: Qjimbo Email address: Website: http://rainscape.org.uk/music/ Best Regards, Jim
