Hey everyone! So I made an album with this Tuberz McGee dude who you might recognize from various Sonic/Megaman compos around here, or for his own original chipmusic. It is available for free/pay-whatever on bandcamp. The pixel artwork was created by the amazing and talented João Victor G. Costa. http://htchiptunes.bandcamp.com/album/menagerie WARNING: This album may or may not contain any of the following; overly cautious giraffes, oversized kittens, pandas puking rainbows, gelatinous lawyers, angry electronics, radioactive cupcakes, lots of pulse waves, and a dude singing.

Hey everyone! More music for ya - this here is the third entry in my Zero-G series of albums, this one a bit more experimental and less chiptune-oriented than before; definitely a lot of new sounds in here, and I had a blast writing all of it. Free/name-a-price as usual on Bandcamp, please enjoy! <3 http://halc.bandcamp.com/album/zero-g3-homeworld http://9bitrecords.com/releases/zero-g3-homeworld/ "9-bit Records is proud to present label founder and curator halc's newest outing, Zero-G3: Homeworld! The album incorporates retro sounds and heavily modulated, futuristic synths and effects, supported by loose hip-hop and broken-beat influenced grooves and a twinkly chiptune aftertaste. Download it for free or name-a-price on halc's Bandcamp page!"

finally. I've only been waiting for it for like the better part of a decade, though given my track record with video games in the last ~5 years or so I may as well not even spend the money ;~; really though, I'll consider getting a PS4 for this game alone. hoping I don't need to bother with the myriad spinoffs and such to enjoy the story, that'll never happen. I'm definitely looking forward to this new installment though.

free album release! halc & Miearth - 'When Late Becomes Early'
halc replied to halc's topic in General Discussion
eh, no particular benefits I guess, aside from getting three of the tracks early for some of those people that were going to buy it anyway. it's more of a promotional/hype building thing, and bandcamp doesn't allow pre-orders to be free, hence the price tag. -
free album release! halc & Miearth - 'When Late Becomes Early'

haha, I think it just took him a while to find one he's actually comfortable with keeping. I think he's finally settled in with Miearth for all intents and purposes from here on. Edit: and thanks! -
Hey everyone! It's been a while, but I'm back with a new original album, this one co-written by myself and my good friend Miearth, who you might know as Insixfour from our Sound of Speed and Majora's Mask collabs here on OCR. Anyway, we have a new 10-track album, currently up for preorder for early supporters (the official release will be free to download), the full album will be released this Sunday the 9th, during a listening party on Arecibo Radio, hosted by the one and only KyleJCrb! Follow the link below for details if you'd like to join the fun! http://www.facebook.com/events/617829941561548/ There are currently three full preview tracks available on the album page, I hope you all will enjoy them and look forward to the full album! We had a ton of fun writing this music and feel it stands among the best of either of our works. Enjoy! http://9bitrecords.bandcamp.com/album/when-late-becomes-early

OCR02813 - *YES* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'What We Left Behind'
halc replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
meh, wasn't in love with the articulations and attack on those strings. they started sounding fake/repetitive really quick. luckily they were no longer exposed once it kicked in, and they work fine as a backing element. really punchy drums, and solid production. personally I found the synths/sound design in general to be a bit generic sounding (the sorta chiptune bit in the middle, as well as those string arpeggios afterward, were a nice change of sound). so yeah. some nitpicks, and I definitely am agreeing with most of Vig's vote, but in the big picture I also agree that this is above the bar as it is. nice work on the mix, and best of luck with the rest of the vote! YES -
OCR02818 - *YES* Super Mario Land 'Super Hipster Land'
halc replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
the glitching, imo, sounds completely uncharacteristic in regards to the rest of the song. at the very least, it's overused within this particular arrangement. otherwise I was actually digging the arrangement quite a bit. sort of a loose/drugged out sound to it. I'd burn one to this. aside from the glitching, I also wanna mention the lack of a bass presence. the track is so full and busy (in a good way), but all of the action is in the mids/high. I think a kinda fat, fuzz-toned bass would really work well in this track. anyway, definitely promising stuff, but I'd like to hear you take one more pass at this one. I don't think it needs a lot of work, but I think a little more polish could take it a long way. hope to hear this one again! NO(please resub) -
yeah. those reverbs and delays are.. for lack of a better work, atrocious. :/ there are some interesting things going on during the electro section, but yeah, the track just isn't very cohesive, and the sounds aren't gelling well at all. the track is also extremely conservatively arranged. there is some pretty minimal rhythmic variations and LFO's in the drums and bass, but for the most part it's pretty much a cover. NO

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 2 'Emerald Memories'
halc replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
quite an adept arrangement of the theme, very creative. performance and sample sounded good. cool stuff. YES -
agreed about the bass, especially in the intro, it could definitely either use some sidechaining, or a wider LFO. it kinda sounds like one big long flat note and it needs more movement to it. I'm not extremely familiar with FF5's music, but this happens to be one of the songs in which I am, and I was definitely picking up on the arrangement throughout, and overall the production is close. I'm really leaning towards a yes on this one, but I can't disagree with Vig's crits regarding the bass being too loud during the drops, and the overall mix is a bit hot and crowded. it might be a matter of dialing down your individual instruments and then using some tasteful EQ and compression on the master to get it to the loudness you want without it sounding so crowded. anyway. I think there's more you can do to make that bassline even more interesting, especially during the drops. but a more well-balanced mix would be enough to flip my vote on this one. NO(borderline, please resub)

the synths in this definitely had that old-school OCR kind of sound, but they sounded nice. once the leads dropped in things started sounding pretty modern. nice guitar performance later in the track, and a lovely ending. reminiscent of both WillRock and TGH's work, but you certainly have your own mojo about you. really nice work, extremely solid and passable mix you guys have here. YES

Hey everyone, just a reminder that the initial wip deadline is a week from today (June 1st). Feel free to send your wips to either ToN or myself, or post them in the project forum.

OCR02216 - Pokémon Red Version "Shades of Red"
halc replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Thanks! Yeah, I know what you mean about the instruments dropping out. They even did that on my old MacBook speakers. It's caused by some weird combination of stereo-spreading and other fx, no clue why it happens though, heh. -
AMAZING debut album. so good.
