  1. :3artists-wise i'd suggest casiopea, t-square, yellow magic orchestra, level 42, swing out sister, list goes on...
  2. yeah that's my feeling. i love wave race's music (well, everything by Totaka), though in this arrangement the things i originally liked are all... gone the laid back latin feel and lush instrumentation. and where are those glorious jazzy harmonies hiding? admittedly the title music isn't the best example of this on the OST though. regardless, it's a convincing arrangement, and has some slick production. solid execution for what it is.
  3. very happy to see a Kirby 64 mix, and what more it's of a boss theme! if there's one thing Jun Ishikawa excels at, it's writing stupid-awesome intense battle music. so, kudos for picking a great OST. i must confess I'm not a big fan of this remix, unfortunately - it's not bad at all, just perhaps too repetitive or otherwise plain for my likes. one thing i think this suffers from is, rather than being an obvious remix, it instead has more of a vague similarity to the source tune and could easily pass as an original (had i not been told, i wouldn't have guessed it was a Miracle Matter remix) though I think this is largely out of your control with this source tune, there's not a lot of melodic content to work with, I think most of what is recognisable about the original track comes from the sounds. perhaps i'd have enjoyed it more if it incorporated some of the standard boss battle music as well, since the two tunes are alike and would fit well together in an arrangement. bah, critical ol' me. i do however dig the drum programming starting around the 2:30 mark!
  4. great mix! quite a faithful cover really, it preserves all the aspects i enjoy in the original track and expands on them (delicious arps!)
  5. Might be the ones I made, they're on my site here. Glad to see they're getting some mileage this track is good fun!
  6. Great to finally see a Pilotwings mix appear on the site (basically any Soyo Oka remixing goes down well here in dave-central ;>) I like the direction you went with this - stylistlcally it's verrrrry similar to "THE CUBE" by DJ SUWAMI, an equally awesome tune - in fact the similarities are so rife that I'd be surprised if you hadn't heard this track before. I guess the only case I'd have against your arrangement is the sparsity of the original material; you've almost made an entirely new track, since you're essentially taking those chord voicings and building around them. I'm guilty of doing exactly the same thing with F-Zero's rankings/select time music too though. gulp my favourite thing on OCR for probably a few years, nonetheless
  7. this is just incredible. i really really hope this gets posted!
  8. Sam's been showing me some of your tracks, this one included. Just wanted to pop by and say this is h0mgz awesomes, and i hope you continue in this vain :3 I'm a sucker for highly liberal stuff of this type, plus I can take any amount of SoM love. Looking forward to seeing this completed, and anything else you make/have made~
  9. ah well, I've got a rack module that gets a lot of use, and while I'm not currently using it independantly of the computer (connected via MIDI-out and line-in), it's a nice option to have available. i would prefer the keyboard not to be dependant on the system, as it seems like there's a higher chance of incompatibilies and other weird funk appearing (wouldn't be able to use it if the computer was out of action for any period, or if drivers weren't available for a given OS in future, or other software issues like latency that I don't get using MIDI in/out.. maybe other things too.) i'm still on XP SP1 too, so who knows, it may not even work with that (admittedly my fault, but yeah...)
  10. That problem with the Axiom is curious. I don't think it'd bother me too much, especially if most aren't as bad as that vid. I wonder if the problem goes away over time with continued use, or if you just have get used to it. The thing bugging me more at the moment though is that an AC adapter doesn't come as standard, and using USB kinda bugs me.
  11. As chance has it, I'm also looking into an M-Audio Axiom 61, seems very full featured and also very reasonably priced. The only other controllers I've found with a similar set of features are the CME UF60 / UF70, which are more expensive and have some stuff like wireless MIDI and breath controller input. So I guess if those interest you that's the only other thing I can think of to recommend right now. I'd also be interested in any opinions either-way.
  12. i went to the hammersmith/london one in november '06 with some other vgmusic staff. also met rexy! it was a hectic but fun weekend. the show was good, quite a laugh, the music wasn't totally my bag but it was enjoyable nonetheless. i liked the arrangements of outrun and sonic the most, and some of the other classic stuff. i have no idea idea how much it's changed since then, i guess they have new content now. i doubt i'd go again, but worth going once at least IMO.
  13. Yeah they're not bad, wide frequency response. The biggest problem I have with them is the way they're positioned, I literally have no better way to position them in here. I'd need to buy a flat screen in order to get more space on the desk, this monitor is way too big, wish it'd just hurry up and die Also, I dunno... speaker systems with bass wheels on the volume control don't seem a good idea for mixing purposes. Admittedly I never touch the bass wheel, so I'm familiar with how much is too much/not enough bass, etc. Still an obstacle I'd rather not have, and if I'm ever going to be seriosmusicianlol then I'll need monitors. Better save the pennies eh? I really like the look of that keyboard djp has. I'd like something similar, full range semi-weighted, pitch+mod (guess that's standard anyway) and maybe some other programmable faders/knobs. Also polyphonic aftertouch, though I don't know what sort of premium you pay for that. Then there's the question of whether it's worth spending extra for a ROMpler or synthesiser component, and who knows how many other features you only realise you want AFTER you've gone and made a purchase on something that doesn't asdhgbkhbasdk okay you get the point. I guess most of the time we're spoiled for choice with music gear, but keyboards seem especially bad in this respect.
  14. i'll stick my neck out and post this, and I will probably regret it later! my current setup is bare-bones and not very efficient. maybe it'll at least show people how not to do it? i guess? http://www.shakal.net/lunar/temp/room.jpg stuff = fairly cheap decade-old casio CTK-631, consumer-range creative 5.1 speakers which are in stupidass places (hard to know where else to put them), mu100 tone generator (out of shot on the desk behind the chair, w0pz), beyerdynamic dt-231 galactic cans (again, consumer range FWIW), and i'm using an audigy 2 soundcard. everything else is software, and there's not a whole lot of that either, relatively speaking. funtimes. so yeah i should start laying down shitloads of dosh and get a more efficient work environment in here, for sure. it's pretty embarassing. it got me through my degree though.
  15. i like what he's doing. yeah it's essentially the same as what emulated music sites have been doing for years, but it's cool in that it makes the soundtracks more accessible to people, and it's practically effortless to find new music this way. he's got a wide and diverse selection there, and he includes all the game and composer credits (though a little shaky at times.)
  16. I watched Legend of Lemnear recently on account that Norimasa Yamanaka did the music. Didn't care for the anime itself though. The only other one on your list I've seen is Cyber City Oedo 808, which is good fun. I'd like to see the Genocyber stuff though... the adverts on my old manga video VHSes are... intriguing to say the least
  17. This is my favourite era for anime too. People I know wonder why I watch "that old shit", but it's so full of charm, and the music is usually awesome as well. Big sucker for cyberpunk stuff, too. And, like-wise, I tend to stick to movies, OVAs and short series. The only big series I've watched to completion is Ranma. Some faves of mine: Bio Booster Armour Guyver, Appleseed OVA, Battle Angel Alita (1993, close enough, the american dub sucks so get the mangavideo dub if you can), Robot Carnival, and Ranma too. AD Police, Tank Police, Cybercity Oedo 808 and Project A-Ko stuff is all good fun too. Of course any Miyazaki stuff is great to watch as well. They're showing Howl's Moving Castle here over xmas, and I haven't seen that yet. Funtimes.
  18. Absolutely, it's a great site. Glad to see this got accepted. Rock on!
  19. Cool arrangement, lots of fun new ideas in there that work very nicely. It sounds like you have a good grasp of using FamiTracker too. It sounds pretty much done to me - have you considered posting it up on 2a03.org or the famitracker forums? I'm sure people there would appreciate it I wouldn't bother submitting this on OCR. Perhaps Remix:ThaSauce would accept it?
  20. I didn't know about Casiopea until earlier this year. Can't believe what I've been missing. edit: although they are japanese, so it makes sense.
  21. Yoshi's Story is one of the most blatant examples I can think of, if it has't been mentioned already. And yeah Mario Land 2 is aswell... perhaps totaka has a thing for them. Saga Frontier II is another good example. But as noted, most soundtracks use it to some extent. I know one that didn't - Secret of Mana. I think only two or three tracks share the same theme.
