Vig's right on. This is a fun arrangement (love the fast-paced nature to it!), but right now it's just a bit overcluttered. Doing some adjustments, like the bass, and cleaning things up will do the trick nicely. I'm not entirely sure if I'm completely sold on the tempo changes, but they do add some interesting elements to the mix, so I think it might be more of a personal thing than anything else. This is a fun theme to take on, and there are some things that are pretty good in your approach here. I like that you start with some synths and ideas that add a lot of anxiety to the track. The short synths and ideas do a good job of that. What I notice even as early as about a minute in is that there's a lot of repetitive parts here, and I feel like ideas stay well past their welcome. If you were to trim down on the repetitiveness by about 2-3 minutes you will be presenting new ideas at a pace that I think won't be too forced and will hold interest better. The synths overall are kinda weak overall, and I felt like there was a lot of empty space in the mix. I think adding some pads as well as some other parts will help fill out the soundscape and give you more to work with. Having more than just drums, bass, and melody will add another layer of interest to the mix. I also agree with Vig in terms of the drum volume, turning that down a touch will help the other parts cut through a little better. I definitely think you can work with what you've got and get a pretty good arrangement here, but I'd definitely suggest using the WIP forums (another Jesse suggestion!) and get some solid feedback overtime to improve this. Not a track you'd think about much, but I like how you've approached it. I think the sounds overall are pretty novel and fun to listen to, and I definitely enjoyed listening. I do feel like there's a touch of treading water in terms of the arrangement being a bit repetitive (background especially), but I also think there's a lot of good here to overbalance that negative. I like it. YES -

I cut most of the vocal samples, and in the intro section, I added quotations of a more melodic source piece to make the source usage a bit clearer. I also added a new section in the middle. I wanted to touch this one up a bit more, but I can’t open the fucking project file. Ah well, I think it makes the cut anyway. Sorry about how much of a pain in the ass this breakdown is…Here goes. Source breakdown: 0:00-1:07 Main Theme, Daniel Theme (The Main Theme tune is pretty abstract, but it has some low melodic lines that I incorporated into the remix. I sprinkled little references to the epic melodies that show up in the Daniel Theme around 2:03. Listen closely at around 0:18 in my remix for an example) 1:07-1:55 Original 1:55-2:19 Back Hall 2:19-3:14 Main Theme, Daniel Theme (This part is supposed to be a reinterpretation of those same low lines from earlier. Note the melody that rises up at 2:50. That’s from the Daniel Theme) 3:14-3:25 Original 3:25-4:49 Daniel Theme (Clear examples from the section of the Daniel Theme that starts at 2:03) 4:49-5:25 Original 5:25-6:19 Back Hall 6:19-End Daniel Theme (Just the chords) LT EDIT (8/3): I got a more detailed breakdown from Brent: Hey... Sorry for picking such pain in the ass source tunes. Here is a more detailed source breakdown: Menu Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShUe_gB-pOY The ambient intro was supposed to be a reinterpretation of the menu theme, but in practice I ended up really just recreating the vibe. Some of the droning bass parts sort of line up with the low bass melodies from the source tune, but I can't even really remember which parts go where. Later, at 2:19 in the remix, you can sometimes hear that nasty distorted synth match the melodic contour of the bass melody at 0:19 in the menu theme, but honestly that's kind of a stretch too. It seems that the only part where I really unambiguously use anything from the menu theme is the bass part that starts at 2:43 in the remix, which sounds like the bass melody at 0:36 in the source. Maybe there are more clear examples, but It's been so long since I did this stuff that I really can't remember. Daniel's Theme: Just in case the remix is still eligible even with such tenuous links to the menu theme, here are all the references I made to the "Daniel's Theme" source tune. For clarity's sake I'm gonna call the cello part from Daniel's Theme that starts at 2:01 the "First Theme" and I'll call the one that starts at 3:11 the "Second Theme". These are the only parts from Daniel's Theme that I used. The high melody at 0:18 in the remix corresponds to the Second Theme. The melody at 0:38 in the remix corresponds to the First Theme. At about 2:51 in the remix the whistle synth is playing that same melody from the First Theme. These examples are kind of obscured. I was trying to keep these melodies in the background until they truly "arrive" at 3:26. at 3:26 you first hear the First Theme and it just repeats a while until 4:25, which is transitions into the Second Theme (though I think the rhythm is a little fucked up) Back Hall: The sections at 1:55 and 5:25 in the remix are supposed to have the chord progression from this source tune. I think my transcription is a little off. I'm not sure if it's close enough to count or not. Summing up... Any part in the remix that isn't mentioned here is original. I guess with the menu theme barely being represented in the remix at all, the whole thing may be ineligible. haha... my bad, I didn't mean to make this thing so hard to follow.

Previous rejection / information: http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=39420 There's a new person on this song: XPRTNovice on Saxophone. Please include him as an artist if this gets posted. I refined this submission a lot since the last one, basically restarting the project. In about 6 hours I re-sequenced the entire song, and about that time in the XPRTNovice found me in the WIP forums said he wanted to record a Saxophone over this piece. About 2 days later he gave me a few takes, and I rolled with this one. I took some more crits from the WIP forum, and this is the end result. Huge thanks to XPRTNovice for pulling this off. The solo he put in really helps the piece a bunch, and the playing is absolutely gorgeous. If you're going to love anything about this song, it should be the Sax. Funny but relevant note: I never played through Chrono Trigger when I started this song, so when you guys said this had Schala in it, I had no idea what you were talking about until I ran into the theme on Chrono Trigger DS. The similarities between the two are completely coincidental, but if you want to count that middle section as Schala, feel free to do so. Thanks for listening! So, personally not diggin' this a super lot, but you've done a lot of good personalization and a pretty drastic style change that still keeps the super depressing mood of the original. A lot of the little harmonies on the vocals are nice touches, and the countermelodies also add some extra flavoring that is pretty good. I'd agree with Jesse that there are some parts that are a bit crowded, but I think overall the track has some decent to good clarity, and I never felt like it was to a point that it would need a serious fix-up. Nice solo, too. YES -
I'm going to disagree with Jesse on this one; I feel like all the variations of the source you presented were well-thought out and provided a strong arrangement as a whole. It's definitely a structure we aren't used to hearing as much on something so short, but I personally never really felt like the track was treading water. I do think that Vig's reasoning is valid, though, and I can see this getting a NO on those grounds, but I was cool with it. If it does end up getting a NO, I would suggest maybe adding a B section from another source (Stone Temple from MM would probably fit quite well, as only one suggestion). Good luck to you! YES

After reading Vinnie's vote I think he is right on for this. The source feels a little too pushed to the side for a good portion of this track, and I think a little more incorporation would strengthen this a lot. Similarly, Vinnie's production crits make a lot of sense. The bass seems like it needs a little more, and there's definitely a difference in the sound when the bass isn't present that I wish was more clear throughout the track. I do think this is a close one. Send it back with some fix-ups please! NO (resubmit) -

Been thinking on this one for a while. I think Jesse's crits are very valid, but I don't think the arrangement is as disjointed as he implies. I never really felt like things were out of place or completely unrelated. I do think the ideas feel a bit one after the other, and some more integration of the ideas together would help make the puzzle fit a bit more strongly. The production I will definitely agree with Jesse on, especially in regards to the dynamics. There is a lot that can be done here in regards to volumes that would really help make things be more interesting and add some more flow to the piece. I encourage you to look into that as well as some ways to clean up the sounds a bit. I think this is close, but I'd like to see Sven add a bit more too it. NO (resubmit) -

Sections of this source remind me a lot of Lufia/2. Very interesting. I've loved watching your submissions improve over time, Liam, and this is a good example of your great performances here. The arrangement is fairly close, but you've added a lot of depth and personality to it. You've definitely "made it your own." Very enjoyable listen! YES

This would be ridiculously awesome to see performed live. LOVE what you've done here, and the arrangement is stellar. Unfortunately, as the gentlemen have all hit on before me (with various results), the loudness war is being won here, and not in a good way. Definitely another pass on the mixing to bring it down just a touch and to separate the parts more would make this all that more enjoyable. Please send this back! NO (resubmit, please!)

I'm pretty much with Vinnie on this one. I think when it's there, the arrangement of the source is a lot of fun and is well thought out. The two detractors from this as a whole for passing are how long it takes to get into things, and taking that one step further on production. I do think this is just over the bar as-is, and while I wouldn't mind seeing Paul John take another pass on it I'm good seeing it up on the site unchanged as well. YES (borderline) -
I'm with Vinnie on this one. I definitely agree that the percussion writing is repetitive, but I think there's enough going on elsewhere and there are enough effects that it is forgivable in the big picture. Definitely something to work on the for future, Emery, but the writing in the other parts is pretty great, and the combo of the sources works quite nicely. I dig. YES

Well, this one's a popular one on YouTube, so I figured I'd submit it. This is my contribution to the Harmony of a Hunter album sequel, "Harmony of a Hunter: 101% Run." What I played I enjoyed, but, never enough to buy the system and the games. But, I really enjoyed the Metroid Prime soundtrack. So, when it was available, I took a listen to the MP2 soundtrack, and... honestly... wasn't that impressed. The only tune that really jumped out at me was the Torvus Bog track. So, when I was contacted about contributing to a HoH sequel, this was the only track I wanted to do. And, they were cool with that. Landing upon a suitable style took some time... nothing was working... and then, for some reason, I felt like trying the theme out in an aggressive chiptune-fusion genre, and... it worked! I've often taken game themes and slowed them down, to add a groove, make it more chill, etc... it's rare that I do the opposite approach and make an originally ambient track more hard-hitting and powerful, but this is one of those instances. Gonna have to agree with Vig on this one. The track is pretty sweet to listen to, but a majority of it feels too distant from the source. Having just the chords to work on isn't enough, IMO. Definitely a clever and interesting approach here; Chris went for a distinct style change, and I think he achieved a good result here. It definitely takes a few listens to wrap your ead around the mix and where things are situated, but I think once that's established there's plenty of recognizable source here. Dunno how the crowd's going to react to it, but I thought it was enjoyable none-the-less. YES
