  1. Hey guys! Thanks on the comments and welcomes. It's great to be amongst great ears and producers. Seriously, those over WIPs need to be addressed also - to be honest, I think creativity was much more natural back then when production wasn't such a worry of mine. I'm a little saddened by this fact. I'm hoping that maybe restarting some of these old projects will bring to light the same spontaneity that led to their making. I feel like nowadays everything I make is too formulaic and safe, following the same process. My Manoria Cathedral project file is on my old computer which is now somewhere stored away.....arghh I should have backed things up back then. I don't think I could come close to recreating its sound if I tried nowadays mega sad Gario - So glad to know that you're still active on OCR! The similarities between this mix and the Tor one (cheers on the kind words) are undoubtedly because of recycled samples. Unfortunately, I don't have too much control over the timbre of my instruments beyond altering velocities because I primarily use sound fonts for instrumentation. Being honest as well, my control of automation within my DAW is terrible, so I'm not capable of sculpting sounds as much as I'd like. Question on that, do you think it's submittable by today's standards? I've always dreamed of getting something on the site but I have the terrible tendency to never finish things - seems like the Tor remix was an unusual exception haha. I don't have the freaking project file though!!! Arghh it's on my old hard drive and I have absolutely no access to it right now. Anyway, as always, very helpful critiques towards the track! I consciously boosted the mids of the slightly-faux sounding bass plucking instrument, so I've definitely overcompensated - well spotted. As well, completely agree on that flute, it's quite fake sounding and I forgot to mention that I was hoping that I could replace it with something live or just a better sample in the future. I do like the "worldy" quality it does add to the soundscape though. As far as the melodic lines go, I'm wanting to be able to vary it up more, especially with the violin played by Jeff Ball. I only have one recording from him so it's a bit of a problem. If anything, I'll have to somehow make a violin sample lyrical enough so that it doesn't contrast too strongly with the live sample. Until the next update!
  2. Hey guys! So, ummm, hey again after like 2-3 years of being gone from OCR lol. I don't know what the inclination was to suddenly work on this ancient WIP, but I've added a few measures, cleaned up the project file (my project management was complete crap back then and still is a bit), and done some overall levelling with EQing. It was really weird using Squidfont soundfonts again since I haven't touched those in ages. The time I spent away from this site was primarily because I moved to Montreal for university, and I wanted to put a more official foot into the music world. But enough of myself, to the music: Link: Final Fantasy VI - Searching For Friends (Robotaki Remix) I hope nothing's changed too much around here! I really missed this community. I'm not sure who's still around from when I used to post to these forums but it'd be great to catch up with those people who helped me continue producing : ) Shoot me a msg! Ah, I just remembered the guy I worked will was Jeff Ball who provided me with a violin line of the main melody - sounded amazing back then and it still sounds amazing today. Anyway, hope you enjoy the oldie. EDIT: HAHA I just noticed I still have my old ass sig made in MSPaint. Too good and lame.
  3. Haha great thread Gario. Definitely is a pleasure reading everyone's posts. I started "producing" music about 4 years ago using FL Studio, which I still use today. I say "producing" because it was earlier around the winter of 2005 when I first got an interest in making music on a computer using the pre-made loops on Garageband, but then busted the balls the next year to jump into FL Studio. (Zircon heavily influenced this decision methinks hehe) This was by FAR the most rewarding hobby decision I've ever made in my life. I still remember sweating like hell over posting my first Secret of Evermore - Boss Battle Theme remix to the WIP forums, waiting for the harsh comments and whatnot haha. To my pleasant surprise, all the feedback was very constructive. So whatever you do, if you feel fairly confident about your track, POST IT TO THE FORUMS and you'll get help that will make you better as a musician. This is even if it's just a midi rip - if it is, so what, you'll be told it is and from there you'll get better ^^ OCR is one of the most (if not THE most) growth promoting online communities I've ever been involved with.
  4. I'd be honoured man, if I didn't reply too late. With regards to requests, I absolutely love Nujabes' extended version of Hanabi feat. Uyama Hiroto. It's quite a rarity (as I couldn't find where to DL the track) but here is what it sounds like: Cheers
  5. My small remix tribute to Nujabes is now up on YouTube. I like to think in some way maybe he'll hear it :/ Ah, this news doesn't lighten up at all... Hope you enjoy the track.
  6. I've just caught word of some tragic news. One of my greatest inspirations, Seba Jun, passed away last month in a car crash on February 26, 2010, the same day a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan. He's most well known for contributing a large body of tracks to the anime, Samurai Champloo, and for founding the company, Hydeout Productions. But even so, he kept a really private life staying away from the public spotlight; I think that says a lot about his character. It goes without saying that I'll miss his music. Please check out his tracks if you haven't yet. You can read more about it here: http://www.nowpublic.com/culture/nujabes-confirmed-dead-hydeout-productions-2592696.html --------------------------------------------------- His close friend, Shing02 (who Seba also collaborated with for the Luv(sic) trilogy) says: Today, I have very somber news for the international hip hop community, especially fans of the independent hip hop scene, and those who have followed my career. It has been announced that Jun Seba, aka Nujabes, Japanese hip hop producer extraordinaire, passed away late February. Official statement from the label (in Japanese) here: http://hydeout.net/hydeout/2010/03/_hydeoutproductions.html We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend. Through his soulful music, Nujabes has touched so many people around the world, even beyond his dreams. He was a mysterious character to most as he avoided the public limelight, rarely conducted interviews, so only a few got to know the man behind the signature production. Yet it continued to amaze me how young listeners of all backgrounds learned of his enigmatic name, and expressed support for his music. As I write now from Japan, I had been leaving him messages the past couple of weeks, trying to get in the studio together, so the news could not have come any more unexpected. Even last week, I passed by his house and called him thinking he was still home. I met Nujabes around 2000 and as an upcoming MC, I was fortunate to work on tracks such as Battlecry, F.I.L.O, Luv(sic) parts 1, 2 and 3. We had been working on the next trilogy of Luv(sic) over the past year (which we’re determined to see through). The last time we talked in January, Nujabes emailed me to wish Jeff Resurreccion, a 19-year old beatboxer who had just passed way from cancer, his heartfelt condolences. While we continue to respect the privacy of his family, we will work to preserve his legacy, and pay tribute to the body of work, some unreleased, that he has left for us to enjoy. Jun Seba will be dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and fans worldwide. in peace, Shing02p --------------------------------------------------- I'm currently remixing a track from Poem of Sky and Sea - 5 Centimeters Per Second in a "Nujabes" sort of way, and will be uploading the track to YouTube as a small tribute to this amazing artist and person. I'll post the link here whenever it gets finished. EDIT: Finished tribute - REST IN PEACE.
  7. Here's a little Phoenix remix that I put together in a night or two Hope you like it!
  8. Remix of Taeyang (태양) - Wedding Dress (웨딩드레스). It's a pretty conservative take on the original track but hopefully it'll still be a nice listen This track is one of the few K-Pop tracks that I genuinely like. Enjoy!
  9. Are you asking about side chaining on a layer that has a reverb effect on it? You can link the peak controller to the volume slider of the specified channel instead of an effect which affects the volume. Hope that's what you're asking!
  10. Hey guys! I've been trying to experiment with more laid back genres as of lately and have turned towards mixing Ryuichi Sakamoto's piano works into an experimental hip hop sorta way. This one is of Mill Theme from a film I believe, along with a small accidentally rendered idea from Love Theme. I included a little bit of my humming vocals for ambience. I just wanted to share a couple of the ideas and hope that it sounds okay. Feels like I've almost gone backwards in terms of the way I'm making music now, since my older stuff sounded more like this It's refreshing! Enjoy! DOWNLOAD (WIP): Ryuichi Sakamoto - Mill Theme Remix (feat. Sachiko) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just as an extra, I'm still mixing K-Pop tunes. SNSD came out with their recent album, "Oh!" which was a big hit on the Korean markets. A track which particularly seemed mixable was Show! Show! Show! I hope you like what I've done with it! (isolating vocals via high-pass was really difficult :s no acapellas released yet) ORIGINAL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWCeV31yMtI REMIX:
  11. Whaaaat....this means i'll never be able to get NO'd by zircon on the panel. CRAP!!!! why didn't I send any tracks in the past 4-5 years! gaeithaoiheoaiehoih @.@
  12. Hey guys! I just have a small question. In FL Studio a lot of the VSTis I use don't change in pitch the same amount as other plugins when I alter the master pitch. What is the reason for this, and is there a way to make them all change to the same amount? Thanks!
  13. I'd love to take a picture of my computer but it'd be really boring. Keyboard, mouse, monitor, mouse...plus my desk is a graveyard of Ramen bowls lmfao, and those can't make music (I don't think so at least). This thread makes me sooo jealous
  14. Hey guys! EDIT: So now it's finished after a long time sitting in front of the computer. It was really hard cramming 12 artists (15 tracks) into a mix that had to be less than 11 minutes, but here's the final product! Artist - Track Name: [1] Seungri (Big Bang) - Strong Baby [2] BoA - I Did It For Love [3] G-Dragon - Gossip Man [4] Son Dam Bi - Amoled (ft. After School) [5] 4minute - Hot Issue [6] Rain - Rainism [7] f(x) - LaChata [8] Super Junior - Sorry Sorry [9] DBSK - Mirotic (minor appearance) [10] DBSK - Wrong Number [11] T-ara - Bo Peep [12] 2NE1 - Fire [13] 2NE1 - Lollipop (ft. Big Bang) [14] Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. [15] Brown Eyed Girls - Abracadabra LINK: Mediafire - Seungri - Strong Baby (Robotaki Remix) Tindeck - Enjoy!
  15. Haha, I'm glad you like it man! Yeah, I added a whole bunch of synths to the originals, phattened up the beat, and added transition FX. The points you picked out are sections exactly where there's only sample slicing going on on top of what I laid out. Other times I just brought out melodies by layering the passages with lead synths. The MV is officially up on YouTube (I ended up using Vegas Pro 8 to make the video) Happy listening/viewing!
  16. Hey guys! I'm back with another mega-remix of a bunch of artists from all parts of the globe. The roster for this electro mix is: 1. SNSD - Genie 2. Lady Gaga - Paparazzi 3. Britney Spears - Toxic [4. Royksopp - Tricky Tricky] <-- it's a really small appearance in the mix. There was a lot of sample cutting and manipulation to get an active electro mix, but I focused on keeping things as seamless as possible between the songs. The general form goes SNSD - Lady Gaga and Royksopp - SNSD - Britney - SNSD. DOWNLOAD: SNSD 소녀시대 - Genie 소원을 말해봐 (Robotaki Remix).mp3 MV ON YOUTUBE: Hope you like it! p.s. I find the source tunes insanely catchy, lol. Got the worst case of ear worms right now.
  17. Hey guys! I've recently taken to remixing popular Korean Pop tunes and have found it extremely rewarding towards developing my sample manipulation, vocal extraction, overall production, and sense of song structure. So far I've finished 3 remixes: 1. 2. G-Dragon 권지용 - A Boy 소년이여 3. (also mixed with KARA 미스터 - Mister)I've linked each to a youtube video of each source if you want to hear the originals. They are all available at my page here I hope you enjoy listening to them! They were tons of fun to make
  18. Hey mono! This is really chill and you've chosen a really cool source. You've made something here that has a ton of character and sounds interesting because of your sample choices. Here are a few things that I hear off the top of my head: 1. Drums sound great already, but I think maybe a touch more compression on the kick and snare could go a long way because it starts become less apparent later in the mix when things get going. A little layering on both could also help 2. Bass sample could be switched. It's a little too "synthy" because of the grit of the ?saw? wave you have at the moment and it doesn't fit in with the whole vibe you've got going. I feel like an e-bass sample could fit here really well, but keep playing around. 3. Soundscapes you've put in here take me straight back to playing Silent Hill so they're great. Maybe play with stuttering FX that they use in the games all the time because those give me the creeps. You're already aware of production so nothing needs to be said there. This has so much in it at the moment so keep going with it!
  19. Hey! So the midterm rush at McGill is finally over! The weekend was free, so here's a remix on a short little source, "Bed and Breakfast", which plays somewhere at the beginning of the game when Ness is still in his pajamas getting out of bed or something. I think what i have right now is a bit liberal, but the original chord progression is there, and the melody does play here and there throughout the track. I've taken liberties with the time signature and the harmonies in later sections. The track took start from the low frequencies of various chime samples. I hope I've kept consistent with the feel of Earthbound music because I've tried to throw in as many Earthbound-y things in there like the rock organ from Skyrunner (2:03), the off-pitch sine melodies, that weird ambient portamento sine thing (plays at 0:16), and just the overall soundscape. Drum processing and reverse sampling took the longest this time around. I've tried to capture that surreal semi-groggy feeling when you wake up on a summer's day after way too much sleep. But once you catch a whiff of breakfast, hallelujah haha. The sine bass is a little loud right now I think so I'll keep playing with it. Enjoy! SOURCE: LINK: Earthbound - Bed and Breakfast
  20. Hey! Sorry it's been so long on the update (years nearly yeah...) Ever since I moved into university I've had to start afresh on a new desktop, so all my old project files are stuck back at home. Unfortunately, this remix was one of the project files on my old computer. Listening it over again though, I'm thinking of just cutting the track around the 5 minute mark, touching up and considering that finished. Would that be enough? I'm at this midway point where I'm afraid to start again because I feel like I'd lose a lot of the stuff I had going in the past, but I also DO want to do a remake because I feel like I could do much better. :S
  21. Wow DZ, thanks so much for your input on my remix, that's awesome. In the midst of all this work, what I need is a clear-cut "fix this" and "leave that," and that's exactly what you've given me. I will remove that wretched 2:45 stutter because I do agree that it breaks the flow of the piece entirely. I'll get on to it asap! This source is lovely so I'd do anything to make a remix of it better.
  22. Hey! Thanks for the comments guys So I'm at university and I've had barely any time to work on things, but I realized I had an unposted update of this track. The link in the first post is updated now. I remember working on percussion and overall production since the last post. Listening to it again after some time, I believe 2:16 would be a perfect time to introduce some twist on the original melody. Oh and, easter egg sampling in the end section See if anyone recognizes what was sampled haha. The ending will NOT be a gong in the final version! (Noted, I really want to work on that Metroid, Glaciers Never Sleep remix. and that Okami one. and Chrono's Theme. Manoria's Cathedral. Dome 16. :S What a goddamn mess...so little time)
  23. Apologies. Link is fixed Super Mario 64 - File Select ReMix I will try adding a harmonic part as you've suggested, Ascendency, and see how it works out. Thanks on the idea! And thanks for the uni wishes m8.
  24. I'm with dannthr on this one. Nothing beats the crazy ass sounds you can do with one your own recordings, or even your collection of one-shot .wavs. Slice, pitch bend, slow down, speed up, reverb, etc. them to death and you'll get what you want. In this oldie I made a while back, there are some ambient 'clanking' sounds used which are just metallic snare samples that are put much lower and reverberated, with an addition reverse entry to make them 'breathe'. If you're going for environmental SFX then there's a wealth available at http://www.freesound.org/. I believe all are in .wav format and are mostly of good quality (stereo recording). Cheers!
