  1. Hey everyone! I've posted this a couple times on the ocrwip channel but I figure it'd get more in depth feedback here. Here's a little something on a very minimal source (named Bloat of course) from Blood II - The Chosen. There's three different versions of the track in the game, one while you are navigating the level, one while you encounter an enemy, and the last when you fight the boss. Great game and really horrific for its time. I'm looking for the .wav for "I live...again," but I haven't had any luck. Instead I just took some sound on my comp and put it in to give a rough idea of what I plan to do with the .wav in the event that I do find it. Hope you like it! 2. Alright Raven WIP is up on the boards as well. Thanks to usa and roz for the critiquing on my eqing on the Decision Bell one. I have to admit I did go a little overboard. It was just too refreshing to hear a clear sound after sticking with the muddied version for such a long time =p
  3. Holy smokes dude, that's awesome. O.O
  4. In terms of the music theory stuff, I don't know much in terms of which resources to look for because I learned (and I'm sure many others) learned through classes or private lessons. The basic thing I follow on is if the chord sounds nice use it but understandably there needs to be some background before that chord can even be constructed. For learning how to tweak with sounds, I think zircon's guide here is quite a good explanation of the basics for tweaking envelopes and filters on oscillators. (The VST, Synth1, is also renowned for its simplicity and ability to create some pretty crazy sounds so IMO it'd be a good one to start with.) Hope I could help a bit.
  5. hmm, that's awkward. you've tried changing buffer sizes as well and that's the first thing that came to my mind. the best way to confirm whether it's something wrong with the file itself or just your sequencer's settings is probably by sending that file to someone else to open. with my lack of knowledge of any sort of computer crud that's just my idea lol. someone intelligible should probably say something.
  6. Sorry for the double post but I think I have a little something going on for Raven right now. Is it alright if I take the track?
  7. hey thanks man. lol unfortunately I haven't got the time to play it right now because of june exams and whatnot, but Okami's sitting on my kitchen table ready to be played in two weeks. I was just wondering in general, is there a way to find out which effect or sample is totally eating up your computer's CPU? I can barely do a playback of what I have in FL Studio 5 without it getting insanely choppy. It sorta sucks because mastering is really difficult when you can only hear jagged bits of your piece. Any ideas? Or do I just simply have to upgrade my computer lol? thanks again!
  8. Just to tell everyone in the project, Decision Bell is up and ready for critiquing in the WIP forums. Hope you enjoy it! =p p.s. sadly, I never did find those tabla samples again but oh well...it wasn't like they were essential to the piece.
  9. Looks like someone is multitalented =p As some people have already suggested, you should continue this act you got going I'm in full support of it anyway. Perfect meld of humour and education for me.
  10. Notes should snap in automatically when you start up FL Studio. The snap bar is located in the menu with all the midi input options. It says SNAP and gives a drop down menu with Line, Cell, (none), 1/6 step, 1/4 step, 1/2 step, etc. There is also possibility that the attack of your samples is too low so they sound delayed when played according to your piano roll. So yeah, either it's your piano roll or your samples. =p Btw, you're improving a lot. Just try to solidify melodies and make them stand out from the interesting soundscapes you're producing. Things sound quite sparse right now only because there's nothing for us to follow but a thick wall of sound. The main thing is you want somebody to be able to hum something after listening to your piece a few times. Make it memorable yeah? Nice work tho!
  11. I'll be quick here since I don't have too too much time. Shift this from an atmospheric dance track to a psychedelic DnB track plz. My ears are crying for a nice sub bass and quick drums. That's just me though. Eerie atmosphere you've created here. I'm really glad you touched on this under-mixed track. I forgot who posted a very similar track on this same source tune on the forums. I think it was JustChris who collaborated with some other. There's a remarkable similarity between the soundscapes of the two tracks if I remember correctly. The use of asian instruments is used in both also O.O Anyways I'll quit rambling. I'd love to hear this as a DnB track. More towards the production, The section beginning at 1:54 caught me by surprise because it is so bright. I think the "white noise" is being made by the arpeggiated chords in the background. It's just a little noisy on the treble side. Arrangement-wise, it is all over the place and unpredictable, but from what I hear this was intentional. It works for me =p The highlight for me was the beginning of the track(as was with your other Chrono remix). The Erhu that comes in near the end sometimes pops out a little too much. I think it may have to do with the delay effects layered on the sample since all the sound overlaps after a note is sustained. Sick stuff m8!
  12. This remix kicks ass. Production and arrangement is all there. I agree the cello could be brought out more since it takes over immediately after the bright lead you've got for most of the piece. The only thing nagging me, correct me if I'm wrong, is the notes in the melody that you're playing. Is there not a D natural (I think it's a D natural...) in the first phrase of the melody? It's around 0:30-0:31 where it feels like it's missing. Not too sure if it was a creative liberty you took or something unintentional, but my ear worms are pushing me against it. lol, such a small nitpick in such a great thing you got going here. Hope for the best m8! Excellent work!
  13. Hey thanks for the comments everyone. I definitely plan to put in a beginning and end to what I have so far and vary the drums. Probably the two things I'm trying to complete right now. I'd like to include a soft section in here somewhere for contrast, but I'm not too sure when. Kinda hoping it might spontaneously come to me. More interpretation of the melodies will be required also. Anyway, thanks again!
  14. Hey everyone! So I played Brawl more than I should have these past few days and I just decided to fool around with these two two sickass themes. This time around I've decided to link the old school synths of the zelda tune (something Mountain??? I did it by ear sorry...I only know this rendition of the melody because of zirc's remix from awhile ago) with the pumping orchestral elements of the MGS theme. I don't think I'm planning to submit this in the long run because there's something non-OCR about to me, but I can't quite grasp what it is. I think it largely has to do with the way it sticks quite close to both source tunes with exception to the end. Few balancing issues here and there, some sample choice issues with leads, drum variation is a no go, but this was all for kicks. Hope you get the same kick I got out of making it =p Enyoy! (or not!) Link vs. Snake - Who Wins?
  15. I like the sort of lo-fi chill thing you got going on here. Only problem is, it might just be TOO chill, as in there isn't much dynamic range throughout the entire piece. I'td be great to hear a little more variety in terms of the drums, possibly the bass sample, and maybe chord choice. THat being said, the instruments you've picked work really well together. I like it =p Oh in terms of the size for submitting, the site is already hosting loads of tracks so they can't be holding tracks that are 14 megs a piece. It'd just take way too much. But, you've got the bitrate going at 320 kbps. That's REALLY high, at least in my eyes. I usually keep things at 160 kbps tops for 6 min tracks. You can definitely lower the bitrate before eexporting it to lower the file size, or use a program like LAME to encode it for you. I don't think it'd affect the sound too much.
  16. Ah yeah, I'm starting to notice those balancing issues. I'll tweak with the velocities tonight and fix those up. I need to find some good soundfonts for nice generic japanese instruments and percussion. I've got a few instruments going on right now but they aren't anything worth devoting a single line of melody to. All the samples used are soundfonts so yea. *sigh* Guess I keep looking on hammersound lol. Thanks for the comments guys!
  17. lol reminded me of maplestory music for some reason. I like this happy music. =) great work guys
  18. hey thanks for the comments as usual roz. I'll get to making the bass a little more memorable. I'm not very good with shaping sounds since most of the time I layer them, but this is a good opportunity to learn. After stepping back from this awhile, I realize that the side chaining I did was a little overwhelming for the ears in that particular section later on so I'll get to balancing that up. In terms of the project, I have just found some good tabla samples so I'm trying to vary up the rhythms and such. Has anyone called dibs on Harvest November yet or is that still a vacant spot?
  19. Sweet, thnx for the comments. The percussion instrument I was looking for was not a Zils, but it was something I was looking for earlier so that's really great. With regards to the middle section, I'm not too sure how to more smoothly bridge the two sections. It was a little forced and it definitely shows in the arrangement. I'll try a few things out after I study for my goddamn math test. -_-" I wish I could just turn seventeen and graduate already lol. Anyways, cheers! amarriedmegaphone: I believe the source tune may be named something differently? The actual title of it is "Thank Goodness for Kokari." Regardless, I'm glad you took it as a separate arrangement. =) Btw, is a live guitar needed or is the sample used right now passable?
  20. Hey everyone! The recent pass of an Okami remix by McVaffe has inspired me to work on an Okami remix. (This game good btw? I wondering if I should buy it lol) Although it's rather rough arrangement-wise right now with only a middle section, I've been having a bit of trouble trying to fuse a western orchestra with a japanese influence. If it's a hit or a miss then please tell me. I got pretty lazy and layered a reverb effect on the Master channel because I haven't put any individual FX on instruments yet (only percussion) so it might be a bit muddied up in heavier sections. Lastly, I've tried to imitate the sound of a shamisen using a banjo. I'll get to recording something live when I get my mic back. Enjoy! p.s. does anyone know what that sleighbell/tambourine percussion instrument is called? it's typically used in traditional japanese tunes (thinking sorta kabuki theatre). Thanks. 21. Hey everyone! Here’s a little something I whipped up in a few hours...a wild take on Wildfields, har har. Initially, I intended to use this chord choice for an Abadox melody, but it seems as if it just fit with the Wildfields tune. If it’s anything, that might explain why the original melody is pretty non-existent as of right now. (It only comes in at 1:36) I plan to incorporate it into the piece much more. Hope it’s sorta catchy and you dig. Thanks! LINK: Seiken Densetsu 3 - Wildfields ReMix
  22. I dunno if it's just my headphones but I'm getting a whole ton of muddy bass sounds. I believe it was intentional since it's supposed to be like an eruption...buut it was a little overwhelming on my ears after awhile. Maybe placing the SFX at the beginning and end would have been sufficient. I like the synths right around the 30 second cuz they were kinda quirky and were quite reminixcent of Megaman music alone. A little repetitive, but mainly because I couldn't hear transitions and changes as well as I would like to. A good listen though!
  23. lmfao, thread favourite'd because it made me lol. snappleman is god. anyways, yeh the piece you got right now goes on for a little too long personally, but I dig retro music big time and this hits the spot exactly. FCKIN MCGYVER!!
  24. Pretty cool stuff man! Here's a few fastcritiques that may/may not help: * The oboe coming in at 0:21 had a little less "character" than the flute you had in the previous version you had. I wouild stick with the flute sample but that's just me. The lightheartedness of the flute fit the overall mood of the piece. * The synth did feel slightly out of place for me, but I think it mainly has to do with its entry into the orchetral. As it settled in, I thought it sounded perfectly fine. You've gotta come up with some sorta creative way to bring it into the soundscape that isn't too sudden. Sry to say but I don't have any clue how to do this lol. * Starting from the introduction of the strings to the new section at 1:38, the attacks on the strings were getting a little too similar to me. Maybe alter up the attacks on the notes if possible? All in all, really sickkkk. hehe, nice work =p
