  1. another update thought a guitar solo would be a good way to break the monotony but i don't have a guitar so used a synth one instead...i think it works pretty well actually maybe it's just because i'm getting used to the song but the repetition doesn't bother me much anymore. not there yet but getting close http://alexhhhh.googlepages.com/Leafcutterv8.3.mp3
  2. the idea you're describing could definitely work but it isn't really conveyed here...i think this is too rough to really say.
  3. quick little update, nothing huge though changed the drums in the middle section. everything is still repetitive but at least it has more energy now. oh and if anybody has any tips on how to do snare rolls properly (at around 2:22) that would help. i'm not sure mine sound that great. http://alexhhhh.googlepages.com/Leafcutterv8.1.mp3
  4. ahh ok. don't worry i am dumb hurr anyways i made a new version doing all sorts of different things except it's still really repetitive because i'm tired and don't feel like making it interesting today the transitions still aren't 100% but i think the idea is there also threw in some vocal samples for whatever reason http://alexhhhh.googlepages.com/Leafcutterv8.mp3
  5. yeah why yeah i thought it might be...turned it down a bit, but not too much because i like this dissonance uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah...couldn't think of anything. though avaris' idea of a piano thing could probably work there... hmm that definitely adds a different feel to it that i didn't think of before. almost gives it a groove haha yeah i thought it might...the idea of feedback doesn't really work with this song anymore anyways. i took off the hi pass and i think it adds a good metallic sound to the pads now than just having high pitched noise.
  6. ok so I have spent a lot of time today rewriting the song. The intro is a lot shorter than it used to be. i put in some drums which are just a placeholder for now while i learn to do dnb drums properly (it is the most tedious thing on the planet), but they add a lot of energy to the intro that i think was missing before. And the middle section just repeats a lot for now while I think of ways to make it more interesting without getting too complex. http://alexhhhh.googlepages.com/Leafcutterv7.mp3
  7. maybe i should've been more specific...learning synthesis is what i am interested in. i'm not starting without any musical experience whatsoever, and i have a fairly good understanding of quite a few areas of music. it's the more technical side of things that have been holding me back from really getting into electronic music, is what i'm saying. braincleaner's article on synthesis, for example, has been helpful in explaining things to me that i had not really understood before. and it seems like Reason is a good program to learn from so i will look into that as well.
  8. and jazz is... well that's just the technical aspect, but stylistically many forms of metal are rooted in jazz music.
  9. that was fast this is pretty good. i guess one little thing was the section at 2:00 kind of lost the waltz aspect of the song which was disappointing. plus the brass didn't sound too great there either. the transition to the zelda theme was really good i thought. great use of the midna theme as a motif. good job.
  10. well...it is very noticeably fl studio. that isn't necessarily a bad thing, look at that song by chumble spuzz that got posted recently. however the sounds you chose are particularly weak ones and they are all put together in a way that really doesn't fit (fx_eh sticks out like a sore thumb). as for the arrangement, you haven't really presented anything that could be seen as an interpretation of the original. it's pretty much a direct cover. i think the main thing you should focus on is coming up with a way to separate your version from the original.
  11. yeah this album is pretty good, much better than deadwing anyways. the more Opeth-inspired stuff they've done recently is not bad, but i'll always prefer the sky moves sideways era of pt i wouldn't worry about those people. anybody offended by the video probably wasn't listening to the song anyways
  12. really? i think that is a strange decision to make seeing as a lot of metal has its roots in free jazz
  13. hmm haven't commented on this yet this is probably the best site project on the site...short, cohesive, and mostly quality music. the whole album is enjoyable to listen to with the exception of son of wind and hero of lore...son of wind is just so cliche and mechanical, and hero of lore just makes me want to sleep when i think it was really meant to have some sense of grandeur. still, good job on this one.
  14. yeah i actually did start by going to ishkur's guide. it helps show the nuances of the different genres, whether or not it's supposed to be taken seriously. it's also a good way to make sure i don't end up like the people cocaine white is talking about. thanks for that link, brain cleaner. that looks really good.
  15. oh no i meant like if it helps illustrate my situation...not literally but thanks for your advice
  16. yeah that's sort of what i do right now, only i am trying to learn what all the different knobs and things on synthesizers and effects actually mean and how they are meant to be applied if it helps i mostly use fl studio
  17. i would consider myself pretty capable in quite a few genres of music, anything that doesn't require that i know what i'm doing when i'm turning knobs and stuff but electronic music is giving me a lot of trouble since i pretty much need to know exactly what i'm doing to achieve certain sounds anyways the point is i am trying to learn how to make electronic music properly, starting with dance music (i.e. trance, house, etc). trial and error hasn't been working, and i don't really know where else to start. anybody have any recommendations?
  18. i really liked it as usual reminds me of Autechre actually the Anti EP moreso than some of the other drill n bass stuff you've done
  19. this is the sort of remix i hoped somebody would make of this song though i guess things like the bass could be a little more aggressive good job
  20. this is pretty cool. made me want to check out aluminum's other songs anyways. loved the piano section. liked the ending too. good job.
  21. well i learned with a piano teacher...and she had a number of different methods, but the one i remember the most is she had flash cards each with a different note in either the treble or bass clef, and i would have to name and play as many as possible in 30 seconds. of course i did all this when i was like 4 years old so i'm not sure if it will be useful to you... another thing that might help would be the dozen a day books. they have lots of little easy exercises that would help both your reading and your technique, so i'd look into that. ehh not really. intervals and scales are really part of the most basic music theory elements and are really only building blocks for things like music harmony, form analysis, counterpoint, etc. which are more applicable to actual composition...however those things really only apply to composition in the classical sense and probably will not do you much good. not necessarily...you may be able to know the interval but unless you have perfect pitch you'll still need to find the key. if you really want to learn intervals though, there are techniques like using songs to identify them (e.g. a perfect 4th sounds like "o christmas tree" and a perfect 5th sounds like the star wars theme, etc.) probably the most effective use of your time is to learn to basics as you're doing right now, then focus on learning about modes and chord voicings and those sorts of things. that will give you the flexibility to play and write in pretty much any key.
  22. neskvartetten have a bunch of cool songs they haven't submitted here yet...
