Pretty solid. Some weird double bass sounds at 1:15. You're majorly pumping a compressor/limiter by the sounds of it. That's the only part where it's very obvious but might be best to watch your mastering compression in the future. Not the best string sample but it kinda works as something else in a weird way. Overall on the rough side but I think it's on the safe side. YES

My first amp was a little 10 watt marshall. RIP you epic rock enabler.

*NO* Pokémon Emerald Version 'The Attuned Tune of a Zigzagoon'
Fishy replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeah there's quite a lot of things that can be improved here. The clap and cymbal samples are pretty awful, kick and snare not much better. Build up with the bass is far too long and doesn't drop very well at the end of it. Pretty much all the sounds have an air of FL studio default samples/presets mashed together, which inevitably won't gel together properly. Not saying thats necessarily the case, but thats the impression I get. For the arrangement, the original is sparse so it's kind of to be expected that the remix would be but the question is why did you pick this source when there are others that would work much better from the game in this style. You've also then stretched it out to be really long which doesn't help the sparseness at all. There are a few cool ideas here and there but you've got to step back and look at it as a whole to see if it's working, and it isn't. I echo halc's recommendation, you can find a lot of help in the wip forum! NO -

The sounds used the intro immediately sound very mechanical and the samples aren't the best quality, including the rain recording. This is mostly the case throughout, some interesting synths but pretty mechanically sequenced too. The sounds used at a bit all over the place, mish mash of unrelated sounds and samples that don't really gel. I can hear you've done a lot to try and vary up the sounds and keep things moving, but if it's not coming together properly to make something cohesive then it has the opposite of jarring it up. In terms of arrangement, lot's of weird things jumping in an out like the drums suddenly simplifying in the middle of the section at 0:53, that slightly out of key line at 2:03, you've got 4/4 drum patterns over the 6/4 source which could be cool but I'm not entirely convinced it's been done on purpose and the ending just kind of stops at a sightly awkward unresolved point. I think you've got to start looking at your production as a whole rather then as individual sounds as it's not really coming together cohesively, although I can hear what you're trying to do. NO

What the hell are you talking about, aiming the mic at the center of the 'cup'. It's called the loudspeaker cone *engineer rage*... Fairly solid stuff on the whole. Rhythm guitars are nice and tight. The whole thing is a bit compressed, giving me tired ears slight, but that could also be the fact I've been judgin' for hours now. Nice tough with the celtic outro. YES -

Brave. This is just cruel. I have no idea what to do with this. The arrangement and orchestration are very impressive but you're clutching at straws quite a lot to pad this out. I'm pretty sure I hear the theme in major, minor, lydian, phrygian and god knows what else in there. It's totally unnecessarily long for a 13 second source, and could have easily been condensed to the most recognizable sections. What it boils down to: is the source dominant and recognizable as per the standards? In my opinion I don't think it is. If someone wants to do a mega breakdown and prove me wrong then go for it. I want someone to disagree with me. It really pains me to do this but NO. -
OCR02558 - *YES* Final Fantasy 10 'Silence Before Repentance'
Fishy replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
You're in favourite source territory with both of these. Pressure for awesomeness has been engaged. *5 minutes later* You succeed. The drums are quiet but do the job of keeping the drive going with nice varied writing. Nice piano arranging, good use of atmospheric pads. The source chords are just gorgeous and you've used them to your advantage well. YES -

<3 u Justin. This is an utterly ridiculous remix. I'm sure a lot of people won't 'get' it, but it's awesome and I don't care. YES -
Yeah I found myself getting a bit of a headache from the sizzle by the end of it. Check out your whole 2k-10k region, thats where the nastiness is. I don't really have anything to add from Larry's post. It's otherwise solid, but does need a re-tinker. NO, plz resub

That's some balls you've got there comparing yourselves to Rick Astley. Kudos for going live drums. Not a bad recording but they sound a bit dry/unprocessed. The guitar and bass though are super low in the mix and gain don't sound like you've done any processing to really make everything gel together. I'm sure it sounds much better in the room but the mixing here is really timid and holding you guys back I'm afraid. I took the time to listen through the sources first but you can kinda tell this is gonna be a case of medley-itis from the source breakdown you've given. Just to stress, there's nothing wrong with medleys they're just not what OCR is about. Neither are covers for that matter. I'm afraid it's a no due to the way the sources are used but I can hear potential in you guys as a group, just need to get your mixing skills together! NO -

I friggin' love FF12 and I friggin' love the lowtown music, don't care who knows it. Lydian represent. Really cool arrangement, love the rhythms and the funking-up thereof. Not the tightest mixing job but solid enough for sure. Ending was also a bit eh but I'm friggin' ok with this. YES -
Gotta agree that the rhythm guitars aren't so tight, which shows in the fast riffs eg 2:43. I'm not sure about some of the synths either. 1:12 in particular sounds very strange when the fast run comes in. The general mix levels are also a little off in places. This is a tricky one, it's very close either way. I know this is sort of typical of you guys, pretty raw production combined with raw rock arrangement. I feel like I've heard more unpolished things that have been passed recently, so I'm gonna lean on the other side of the fence. YES, but borderline.
-
Definitely suffering from a bit of medley-itis. Gotta tie the themes together a little bit more creatively. The actual instrument arrangement is pretty solid, but the production is on the quiet side and doesn't really convey the energy of the arrangement to it's potential. The bit at 2:00 sums it up. It starts brilliantly, and you're expecting a huge build up that never quite happens. You've shown some good arrangement skills for sure, needs the production to bring it to life. NO

String intro is a bit awkward and dry as mentioned but the samples are nice. Otherwise it's a solid pass. Not mindblowing, I know you can do better but I'll put that down to the DoD time limit, I can never finish something good enough for DoD in time . YES

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Aerial Carousel'
Fishy replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Good start but it's a bit basic as my colleagues have mentioned. The leads especially are a bit too simple to rely on. The square lead in particular is super loud compared to everything else and gets a little annoying. Try and get a few different sounds in for different sections to really distinguish between them and give the overall structure a bit more shape as it tends to just plod on a bit overall. I do love this source track, and it's not far at all off the bar so I definitely want to hear a resub! NO, resub plz -
How do you feel about guitar drills when building chops?
Fishy replied to LuIzA's topic in Music Composition & Production
I suddenly improved my speed more in a few months then i have in like six years a few months ago and it wasn't as a result of those drills. I was distracted by them for years and it just got me frustrated that I wasn't improving. I found my speed by slowing things down so that I could learn to move as little as possible. Try and play as slowly as possible but don't make unnecessary movement, and with as little effort/tension as possible. After a while you can speed it up without making extra movement, and suddenly it's easy to play fast without effort, and that's the difference in my experience. So yeah if you're gonna do the spider drills, start them ridiculously slowly and focus on small movement and playing without tension. If you speed up and there's suddenly tension, immediately stop and go back to the start or you'll just end up frustrated and with bad habits. -
OCR02508 - *YES* Wolfenstein 3D 'My Loved Ones Are Gone'
Fishy replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I know it sounds repetitive but this is just awesome. There are things that could be improved (kick/snare) but this is raw appreciation and it's super effective. Just for sheer feelin' you get a yes my friend. YES. -
*NO* Pokémon Black & Chrono Trigger 'Oracle of the Spire' *RESUB*
Fishy replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
The main lead is a bit tiring to listen to. The waveform is a bit too simple and it gets pretty grating. Needs to have some kind of modulation to make it more listenable. 2:30 piano just sounds a bit ridiculous, those chromatic runs are harmonically questionable as well as being a bit over the top. Likewise the main drum samples just sound a bit lo-fi in a bad way, i'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume those are just the garageband samples and you've done what you can. Yeah the above three issues are annoying enough to stop me enjoying it, but the idea is creative and solid and the source tune is great so I definitely want to hear another version of this! NO -
OCR02535 - *YES* Castlevania 'Enough Time to Dance' *RESUB*

This could go either way. I can see where a few EQ cuts could be useful but after a few listens through nothing is bothering me enough to make a fuss about, and it's all already been said pretty much. YES -
OCR02569 - *YES* Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) 'mojo gogo'
Fishy replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Man you shred that sax. Drums are a bit quiet/weak but sound well written/sequenced. Not even remotely bothered by the copy pasta vocals. There is a lot going on in the arrangement considering it feels a bit rushed, very creative. It's not the most polished mix but I think on balance none of the issues individually detract from the track as a whole, so I'm coo. YES -
*NO* Final Fantasy 10 'The Dreamer Departs' *RESUB*
Fishy replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Sup dawwg. Yeah the violin lead is weak and those orchestral hits need to be something more suitable. Around 2:55 that synth in the left channel seems a bit out of place too. There wasn't anything that majorly annoyed me timing wise but can't hurt to tighten up things with a bit of quantization. So yeah, the above things are really the only things holding this back from a YES. There are a lot of things that are solid about this, really not far off! NO Also u come to next convention u. -
I count at at least four slackers. We should hunt those guys down.
