So after a bit of handbags in IRC I just want to reiterate my point publically. OCR University makes no sense, relates to no joke that I'm aware of, misrepresents what OCR is to people who don't recognise it, isn't funny to those who do, and imitates a trend we have no relation to. As official merchandise it serves no purpose whatsoever, and an hour-ish of debate gave me absolutely no solid reasons to suggest otherwise. It is marginally more stylish then our current t-shirt, but that is not a good enough reason. All I managed to get out of people was a sort of 'why not' attitude. Why not sell t-shirts with just pictures of Dave on it? I think that as a community we can do far better and that is a better reason not to do it then any reason I've heard for it.
-
The first one makes no sense to me at all. If I don't get the joke then anyone who doesn't know OCR will just get confused about what OCR is. Srsly if that was a mix I'd no override it, fo reel. Second one is cool though.

OCR02316 - NiGHTS into dreams... "She Can Has Long Ears"
Fishy replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yeah Uprising was totally what I was going for. Was definitely a challenge getting all the genres from the original across both faithfully and originally at the same time. I should play this on Saturday (lol j/k I can barely play it at all, that solo is comped to hell and back). -

Shall I put you down as coming? We'll be doing a talk about OCR, a bit of Q&A, a little music quiz using some remixes. Me and Will are also gonna rock out some guitar! -
I've found three separate track list names. Even wikipedia lists two different names for every track, and I've not heard of either of them in most cases. If anyone knows the definitive list that would be helpful.

Just Sat the 3rd. I have shit due on Monday, shouldn't be going at all really but I simply must. -
That's not entirely true though. I was very new at the time, and I really wanted to be on it. Once the thread appeared I asked (got an indifferent answer) and started working on a free track anyway and kept sending him it and eventually got on. This before I had anything posted or even accepted. I can see your point too, and I don't think either is the right way to do it necessarily. But if someone wants to drop a surprise album with carefully picked remixers I don't think that can be viewed as unfair to the community.
-
Well there's a difference between secretive and surprise. votl was kept between the remixers involved for a long time, and was fairly effective at building up excitement as a result of carefully revealed information over time. It had 40-ish mixers involved, you can hardly say that's not a community effort.
-
Yeah economy picking is a two-faced bastard imo. Yes it's fast but it's hard to feel a rhythm with it. I try and stay away from it for everything but sweeping.

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 2 'No Country for Old Kongs'
Fishy replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Hrm... tricky one. It's hard to point out individual things that aren't working, but looking at it holistically it doesn't feel there. Very little happening in the bass. That piano sound is bizarre, sounds like it's right under my noise. Back off on the compression, the mids and volume on that thing. Some of those synths are very plain and woofy. A lot of instruments sound that way actually. Be careful with those mids, and probably worth cutting a bit of that range out of your reverbs. The arrangement additions do tend to meander at times. I'm not a fan of the glitches personally, the second one especially just sounds a bit gimmicky. I'm also finding my ears just want me to stop listening, which is usually a sign of over-compression resulting in leading-edge distortions and listener fatigue. Definitely some promise in there but the execution isn't there. NO -
OCR02662 - *YES* Final Fantasy 'Roaming... Please Wait'
Fishy replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Smash that china. Pretty cool. Lots of timbre variety, a couple may not fit but with something like this everyones gonna find some sounds they don't like. Gurgu transition is a bit odd as mentioned. It does go on a bit, and sometimes a bit tricky to remember what it is. On the whole though nice work. YES ps. You deserve a slap for that vinyl rip. -
OCR02506 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Dramatic Dark World' *RESUB*
Fishy replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
I could argue the fact it never quite takes off but never did the original. The intro is incredibly blocky and I can't decide if I like that. The additions and harmonies are all quite nice and the sequencing, whilst not stellar, is alright. It kind of drifts between not-quite-borderline and really quite nice at times. On the whole I'm good with passing this but definitely bear in mind contour and tension in your next submission as they are a bit absent here. YES -
I was joking. I spammed that shit on twitter anyway. TWICE!
-
This is closer to spam then the channel ever was.
-
Well this is stupid. If this is the result of a claim from a games company I will be very disappointed.

OCR02531 - *YES* Final Fantasy 8 'White Magic Is for Sissies'
Fishy replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
I simply must protest m'lady. Indeed it doth repeat on occasion, however the mixing is most apt for this particular oeuvre. Fucking brutal. VERILY -
Shadow of the Colossus is the best narrative through gameplay evar. FF....4, 9, or X (if you look past the voice acting) have the most powerful stories to me. The endings to 9 and X are polar opposites but very powerfully happy/sad respectively.
