  1. That is one lovely flute sound. Guitar is not bad either. The themes both fit the style and each other well. Drums are fairly simple but can't argue stylistically with that. The live guitar and flute make up for the slightly static drum/bass sequencing. The guitar improv works well. Not too much else to say about it. Overall a bit on the simple side but it flows well, with a nice (if a little repetitive) groove. I like it. YES
  2. Yeah it has happened. It's up to the director of the project if they want to put an already released track on it. EDIT: SNIPED U
  3. Satriani Scream Recipe You will need: A guitar. Some high output pickups. A large amount of gain on your amp or on your distortion pedals. A whammy bar (preferably floating tremolo/floyd rose). A pick. Method: - Preheat your amp to high gain. - First try to produce the effect by playing a nutural harmonic at the 5th fret on any string, and pulling your whammy like a mofo. This will probably be a lot lower in pith then a true Satriani scream. - Master the pinch harmonic. Try it on the low E string first. By rotating the back of your hand to face more towards the guitar as you pick, you cause the string to 'pinch' the side of your thumb immediately after you pick it. You should be able to feel this against your thumb. Keep moving up and down the string and you will find the different notes you can produce by doing so. There are dead spaces that produce nothing at all so move it about if you're stuck. -Try that shit on the B or G strings and produce a high ass note. You can whammy bar into or out of it for cool effect. It is damn near impossible to do on the high E string consisntently. Not even Satch himself attempts this. - Advanced satch screamers can produce a pinched harmonic on both the B and G strings with one picking motion. This sound epic when whammied as they change pitch at different rates, producing a nutral flange. -Add salt and chorus to taste. (But seriously at what point do you get stuck in the above recipe?)
  4. The submissions standards answer most questions about arrangement you might have: http://ocremix.org/info/Submission_Standards_and_Instructions The answer is usually in there, but I understand it's not the most interesting read to wade through .
  5. I never even submitted my DKC2 track, it just appeared on the front page. Wes must've submitted it for me. Confused the shit out of me.
  6. You can use it for reference. You can't just import it and give it new sounds, without meaningfully rearranging it.
  7. AKG 240 MKII for headphones. I own some Fostex PM.04 monitors which are pretty nice for their size/cost. But if I really want to enjoy it I usually go to the studio and chill out in an edit room or something. We have an epic listening room with some B&W 802 (kinda like mini Nautilus) which sound amazing. The view is epic too, but hard to see. That's not me, I took the pic.
  8. There are no threads for direct posts. I'm not even 100% sure what the DP process is. From what I picked up in jchat they get nominated by whoever's working the inbox and then larry/dave decide to DP or send it to the queue. Also Dave posts as much info as he thinks is relevant from the submissions (which frequently have nothing mind you). The latest dp (halc/chth) had loads of their comments. You get what we're given. The only difference is when they do write nothing in their sub you don't get judge comments in their place.
  9. It's up to us, but most stuff that's actually out of the inbox and in the queue is from midly the same time. I tend to get the stuff from sources I know very well done quickly and then work from the oldest. Mixposts is totally up to Dave, he posts what he wants in the order he thinks is balanced.
  10. I am working on something (probably with a few people helping) for that track. It's one of my favourites, just trying to figure out a good angle.
  11. Most reverb impulse responses are just as long as you would expect a real reverb room time to be. Somewhere between 0.5 to 10+ seconds. They have some more surreal ones that last longer. I have made my own impulse responses before but the ones that come with logic are much better. I tend to use <0.5 seconds for using the colour of a room impulse that I like or >1.0 seconds for more realistic orchestral reverb.
  12. I use Logic's convolution reverb almost exclusively. If you have really good impulses nothing much compares.
  13. Think? You know damn well they are. Well... hard to find a foot wrong here. Phat beats, epic source, nice strings/piano samples. My only real criticism is the section with the main halo theme didn't feel as epic as it usually does the first time it enters. Ending with the piano was a cool idea. Pretty solid all around. Just as a sidenote, some of the halo music is really excellent. Moar remixes. Shame they didn't really evolve after the first game though. YES
  14. The harmony in the intro is a little odd, but once things kick off we're cool. Like the combo of orchestra and slightly more esoteric instruments and sound design. Generally very high quality samples being used well, a few odd trills though. Agree with Deia about the strange piano bit and the transitions, but these aren't too damaging. Arrangement flows okay and doesn't suffer from medleyitis. I know Jaka is improving his touch very quickly but this is still safely above bar for me. YES PS This guy is one to friggin' watch! He is improving at a pants down crazy rate since this sub. His 3 FFIX project tracks are sweet as, completed with '07 AnSo rivaling speed. You 'erd it here first.
  15. Immediately those harpeggios sound slightly out of time. Stuff like those tom hits should sound huge and epic, here they just sound half hearted. Use layers of drums and maybe other instruments and give it some oomph. When things kick off it gets better. Incredibly boring drum beat, you can do much better then that. As soon as that section feels like it's about to change up and go somewhere interesting it just disappointingly does a big volume drop. The voice over was ok I guess. There was no real build up to the guitar drop in either time, it just starts. I can hear what you're going for in the arrangement, but the executions are not nearly epic enough to pull of those transition properly. The sudden drops and build ups carry no tension. You've got to be more creative with both production and arrangement to raise the tension from drop ins\outs. If you want those moody piano bits you need to make the listener know something is building and you are about to melt their face with a riff, but they have to wait . Not much variation or creativity in the drums department. Guitars were generally speaking okay but that rhythm tone was a bit weak, no chunky meat to it. You've layered and played them well but the tone is all highs. I know that seems like a lot of negative points but just trying to give you some specific things to work on. NO, resub
  16. The registration fee is not the issue. Getting there from Canada is. That's some serious dolla unless you book very late.
  17. The whole 'preregister early' thing is just making this harder for me. I'm financially independent and also in a separate country to my contingency parents house :3. I really can't say either way yet.
  18. So it finally finishes downloading and apparently you need Snow Leopard. Regular Leopard won't cut it. I love steam for my PC but srsly, valve is testing me.
  19. I prefer L4D1, but I SUPPOSE this will do. I still hate you valve. EDIT: Oh so apparently I can't even get L4D2 despite paying for it because their poor widdle servies are too busy. So sorry valve, it's not like I expect you to prepare to game releases properly or anything. You should totally use all that money we just gave you to make a big money bath instead of buying more servers.
  20. RELEASE THEM FOR MAC ALREADY! It's the 5th you valvey bastards.
  21. I'm issuing a final deadline now, and I'm gonna get these spare key tracks filled ASAP. Our progress has been excellent thus far and it is an entirely reachable deadline. Just freed some lazy tracks up, please apply promptly. March 24th.
  22. So we're getting some more electronic stuff to balance out the styles lately. chthonic and halc taking crossing those hills and bran bal - loving what I've heard from these guys before. Potential epic signing for Dark Messenger in the works. I won't settle for anyone less then epic for that track.
  23. To be honest I'm not sure why Andy overrided it. If the production is that bad it shouldn't have been panelled to begin with.
  24. Sorry but there just isn't enough source. It's only obvious what it is because of the intro. If you skip to the dnb section there's very little obvious connection from then on. It would not be identifiable. You could just take some dnb in the same key and paste that little bells riff over the intro and outro and it wouldn't be far from the amount of connection here. It's missing the point of an OCR arrangement entirely. This still kicks ass mind you, just not OCR material to me. I think you guys should listen again. This isn't dominant and it's only artificially identifiable by planting the bells riff in your brain before essentially doing it's own thing. Awesome production and style. If you make anything with more of the original please submit it :3. NO
