I like to pan stuff heavy wide as long as it's balanced by something on the other side ala Steely Dan type stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0ec7n0QL4k&feature=related I think it makes individual parts of the mix stand out more. It's a lot easier to appreciate funky little guitar or piano/organ sounds if they have their own space, but it's gotta be balanced. Obviously this does not apply to all all genres. In terms of classical music and recordings, the consensus is to pan things as they would appear on stage.

*NO* Final Fantasy 9 & Wild Arms 'Weeping Shards' *RESUB*
Fishy replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
So for this most part this is atmospheric and spooky. The one is exception is that guitary synth. It just doesn't fit to me at all. Everything else sounds fairly transparent and reverberant; that synth is comparatively super dry and in your face. One of the diminuendos in particular at 2:33 just drops off awkwardly, you need to smoothen that out. I also agree that the louder bits are disproportionately short. I think this is close but like Jill I'm not convinced this is as good as main site stuff. It is close and the potential is there. You should look at making those louder bits powerful and epic (and preferably longer), and keep those quiet bits atmospheric. I'd also recommend finding a synth sound that matches the soundscape a little more naturally. NO, plz resub -
Yeah like Justin said, I recently (last week) moved to Canada, which was a very late decision and complicates things greatly in terms of how much time I have now. I'm working at some studios over here so my schedule is highly irregular. If the due date is soon it's unlikely I'll have time. If this is the case, then I apologize for not being a bad enough dude.

*NO* Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 'I den Svarte Skogen'
Fishy replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
Guitars are pretty good, vocals are ok for the style. Drums? Need a lot of work. The kick should be huuuuge and clicky. The snare sounds too weedy. You're using a blastbeat too often for this kind of tempo. It's too slow to be really effective. Try and change up the patterns more often. Listen to some commercial (lol) black metal and see how much louder the drums are. Try an imitate that balance more. The drums are the only thing really letting this down. The acoustic passage is pretty nice. All around good work but those drums are letting the piece down. Get them loud and in your face like they should be! NO, resub plz -
*NO* Super Mario 64 'Definitely Koopa' *RESUB*
Fishy replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
I pretty much agree with the above. The timing of the performance wasn't great throughout. The synths don't particularly match the guitar and bass parts. The guitar sound is really thin and weird. Like the other guys said, the individual sections feel like parts from two separate songs and don't transition well. The problem with the lo-fi synths is that they just sound too forward and dry, and this sticks out loads and becomes quite jarring. The drums on the other hand clearly have something resembling natural reverb and sound like they're in a real space. The synths don't, so they don't fit together well. Some good ideas but the production needs work to execute them properly. NO, resub plz PS Going to tape and back again is a bit eh. Go straight to tape if you want the real analogue sound. -
I enjoyed the telephone line and the name idea. Nice FFX joeks too. The arrangement however is just too undeveloped. There's not a great deal added, it just feels like a slower more spacey/reverberant soundscape. I couldn't really hear much of a structure and the ending was a abrupt. The sounds used feel pretty MIDI/basic, especially the lead guitar sound. It was fun, but the arrangement is too conservative for OCR. NO

I looked up A Scholar and a Physician a while back. They're making some very interesting synthpop music: http://www.myspace.com/ascholarandaphysician The counting song on their myspace is particularly entertaining to me. -
Some basic hardware/setup questions
Fishy replied to ichrius's topic in Music Composition & Production
when people say 16-bit and 24-bit, they refer to bit-depth. This basically just decides how many possible different values you can have of a digital sample. The more values you can have, the more likely you are to be closer to the actual analogue 'value' you are recording. 24 bit takes up 8 more bits of storage space, but calculating the sample is not any more or less cpu intensive. Technically speaking I suppose you could say a higher bit-depth is 'higher quality' but 16-bit is already CD quality. There is little to no point in going higher then 16-bit. Most people record higher but when you burn to CD everything goes back to 16-bit so ya... not much point. If you have the hard drive space then why not I suppose. When people talk about 32 or 64 bit, they are referring to your operating system architecture. In short 64 bit allows you to use more RAM, but not all programs and plugins work with a 64-bit architecture yet. 32 is safe. There are other differences obviously but if you plan on going 64-bit, make sure everything you want to use works. Check the specs. If you want to use Fruity Loops you have to go with windows, there is no mac version. -

24-bit doesn't make much difference to your CPU, only to your hard drive space (takes up more room). Go with firewire instead of usb, much better for real time stuff like recording. I don't have one but hopefully someone with a decent one can chime in..... now: -
lol, that was a quick recruitment. Good luck dudes. Snapps: If you want a secret forum within OCR for development send us the details by pm and we can probably hook you up some official support from the go if we like what we see (and you usually deliver the goods I'm sho). Also I would totally be up for a cameo appearance. Just one power chord somewhere.

Surely you guys would be better off telling the artists directly in their wip threads or by pm? Go and do that now.

* I was worried that they wouldn't find a smooth way to continue using GlaDos that was also believable but it looks like they've hit the nail right on the head with the new bots idea. I assume this is one of those set in the past dealies. Valve are generally awesome sauce when it comes to gameplay so I have full faith in this. I don't have full faith in the speed at which they release things but you've gotta wait for quality I suppose.

Being a judge makes you appreciate music done well in any genre after a while. I can enjoy a huge amount of styles a lot more then I would have otherwise having heard excellent (and awful) examples of each.

Yo, so what we have on this project so far is too good to let a few slackers hold us back. What with ff9 being passed on to me not too long ago (which is huge in scope compared to this) Justin kindly offered a helping hand. He was one of the first guys to finish so he's really determined to get this thing done so don't expect to get away with slacking y'all. Let's do this.

Don't be like that Brandon, you know why . From the standards: "While OCR site projects do not pass through the Judges Panel, we expect a certain level of quality with every release." The absolute minimum is at least 1/3rd should be post-able; that obviously wasn't the case with what he saw. Official projects still represent OCR and therefore do not get a free ride. This somewhat used to be the case, it isn't now. D'awwwww... We have no official stance on this. There have been cases where tracks have been released earlier as teasers, but never when projects have been started after a track was posted and appeared on anything. If the only reason you are adding an existing track is to push up the quality, we are unlikely to think highly of this. I'd say this is a case by case issue, but it's kinda missing the point of projects. We would be likely to dissuade it.

The Extra Credits thread!! EC is amazing!

D'aww I think you missed a golden opportunity to discuss Heavy Rain. I literally spent 20 minutes trying to decide what to do in the final trial. It was decision-based torture throughout. Although to be honest it would've spoiled the story somewhat so I can understand why you might not have. -
My money's on Charlie Zeleny to replace him. I called it.
