OCR03209 - *YES* Final Fantasy 9 'Ground Zero'
Nutritious replied to halc's topic in Judges Decisions
Nicely expands the original. Cool percussion stuffs. Nice Production. Halky goodness. yes -
Don't forget that he also founded and helmed Pixar Animation Studios before selling it to Disney in 2006. If you want to talk about impact, think about how many people have seen movies like Toy Story and Finding Nemo. RIP Steve

OCR03804 - *YES* Seiken Densetsu 3 "Mother of Turmoil"
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Wow, very nicely produced orchestral piece here. Nicely mixed parts and very effective sequencing of the various parts. Watch the reverb of the big percussion parts and it adds a lot of "boomy" noise to the mix. Arrangement-wise, I agree that this is very much on the conservative side for what we're looking for here. The melodic & harmonic work in general matches the original. Though they're are some structural changes to the song in general. Sections like 1:41 definitely help this this regard as you've retained original elements, but arranged them in a creative way. This is a tough call to have something so well produced, but yet this conservatively arranged. I'm going to go Yes, borderline on arrangement as I think this is cutting it close, but does have some personalized elements helping it just squeak by. -
*N/A* X-Kaliber 2097 'Psy-Kaliber 2097'
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Wow, rockin energy here guys. Andrew's right, vast improvement here from the original. Plenty of energy here with all of the distorted synths and high pacing. I thought the half-time section in the middle was an EXCELLENT changeup that had me nodding my head. There were a few production issues I'll point out. Balance could use a little work. For example, at 1:15 the crunchy bass synth is featured prominently, while the melodic synths are in the background, washed out in reverb. In general, there were some pretty heavy bass freqs present throughout, especially in the intro, which come across a bit overpowering to other elements. The connections to both original tracks were clear, but you also incorporated lots of changeups, creative effects, & modulations to make your mix stand apart. I'll also point out that there was some very nice transition work here, guys. To DA's crit, I can see where she's coming from as the last 2 or 3 sections, while not rehashes, didn't feel like "necessary" additions (I'm talking pretty subjectively from a song energy ebb/flow and progression standpoint). Still, though, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the track; so the length & progression isn't a problem for me. Yes -
OCR02472 - *YES* Mega Man X3 'Super Fighting Robot X'
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Man, this sounds like something that could've been submitted to the site a few years ago (in a good way). It's got that old-school ocr electronic sound. No question what sound is being arranged here at all, as Sir Harby both makes strong melodic connections, but also adds his own soloing and expansions to compliment the material. To OA's point: yeah, the snare sticks out over things, but not to the extent where it really bothered me. Despite the weak source (some of it sounds badly detuned or just bad sound design) The Megaman style definitely fits the Willrock style, so I'm not surprised at how well you executed this. Good job man. 'oy, guv -
Yup, happens sometimes. Usually Escariot is on top of it pretty quick, though. I'll try to hit him up to check it out. Thanks for the heads up. I'll also mention I got a KICKIN wav from sir jordanius for the castle theme, which is now done. Lots of finished tracks now! So so close.

*NO* Deus Ex: Human Revolution 'The Fall of Icarus'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
First I want to say that I like your approach here. It's a very moody track that uses subtlety in writing well. Gonna echo Halc & OA that the left hand gets pretty repetative. In the first section it was also sounding pretty rigid with the same repeated velocities. I'd recommend some velocity variation in addition to some writing changes previously advised. One other note: you've got what sounds like 2 right hand parts starting at 3:25, which I'm not sure was intentional. This caused what sounded like some clashing notes in places like 4:12. Anyway, it could be chalked up to arrangement decision. EDIT: Just a suggestion that came to mind on the ending. Strictly my opinion, but I would've liked to hear some supporting element (pads or atmospheric stuff) behind the fading piano part to help finish the mood at the end. So yeah, you know what to do. Focus on that left hand writing and get this back to us No, resubmit please -
OCR03550 - *YES* Final Fantasy 9 "The Fallen Savior" *PROJECT*
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Maybe I'm hearing it different than Jessie, but I think there are some significant balance/mixing issues here. The whole track has really excessive levels in the mid-high range, which makes the whole thing sound harsh. You might want to check your mastering effects here, maybe it's some sort of maximizer or exciter or something that's making it come out this way. Mixing-wise, the non-guitar leads felt pushed back behind the supporting elements. Also, there are parts later where it gets really loud. I had to turn my volume down several notches once 2:52 hit and things are sounded cluttered to the point of distorting the instruments. I just judged a heavy dnb track which, while having the opposite EQ presence (heavy lows as opposed to the higher freqs here), was a step down in perceived volume level. That said, the arrangement is very cool and creative. Clear use of the original while bringing your own arrangement ideas to the mix. The guitars were well performed(as expected). Drum writing was very well thought-out. Overall, you've established the feel I think you were going for, just the execution needs some tightening. I really don't think this is far from a pass and, actually, could well pass as-is. Good luck with the rest of the vote. No, resubmit please -
OCR02578 - *YES* Wild Arms 'Priority Nemesis'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I've been getting more exposure to Flexstyle's music in the past year or so and I'm more impressed the more I hear. Great energy in this track. Your arrangement really takes up the energy from the original There are lots of fun changeups, creative effects, and dropouts to keep the listerner on his/her toes. Sweet track dude. There are a few minor issues I'll point out. There are times were the reverb felt a bit excessive on certain elements in the intro & end. Also, there's some clutter in the low end - I know you're going for heavy low end dnb, but in this case, it feels like you lost some distinction in the various elements. Gonna second Vig on the weak string stabs . Agreed on the weak ending too. Sounds either like he got lazy and just ended it or ran out of time/ideas. But, overall, great dnb goodness (badness?). Yes -
*NO* Chrono Trigger 'House of Green'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Hey, I dig the feel and sound choices here. Cool, creative approach with your production. Piano definitely stuck out to me, but it didn't kill the mix IMO. Arrangement-wise, I'm sitting on the fence here. I agree that on the intro, I didn't hear any real overt connections to the source until 1:26. From there, though, there's a strong connection for most of the rest of the track. I was worried it was going to be TOO much on the conservative side for the rest of the track, but there were some nice chord changeups and variations that you brought to the table to allay my fears. When it comes to the Memories of the Green section, though, we've basically got a straight up cover of that theme and just for one playthough (though the transition into it wasn't bad). I would've liked to hear some arrangement on that theme if you're gonna include it as part of the track. Honestly, I wasn't really feeling the lead sitar(?), especially when it started getting into more rapid note changes (2:56 for example), but again, it's not a dealbreaker for me. Transition just before the 4 minute mark was pretty weak. Felt like it should've either wound down gently or had a more stark dropoff - right now it's kind've in the middle, which isn't where you want to be. So yeah, there are a few production issues. And while the source takes a while to kick in, it is present for the majority of the track. But overall, I don't feel like there's enough that would quite bring me down to a No. Yes, borderline -
Any DirectWave users? I have a paid job for you.

I think I know what this is. If it is, Make It So. -
Total agreement on all of the production/drum writing crits mentioned already, so I won't beat a dead horse (I'll only say that even just varying up the hats from the 8th note pattern would've gone a long way in this regard). I heard a few mixing issues as well where it seemed like some elements were bleeding/interfering with each other, but nothing major there. One thing that threw me that I'd like to ask the mixer about is the sudden entrance & exit of the high string/pads at :24. It sounds like they get cut off mid-phrase, which doesn't sound intentional to me. Yeah, it's a stylistic choice, but I would've cut the vocal clips Fadeout ending was just ok. It could've been strechted out longer. Personally speaking, I prefer actual endings vs fadeouts, but that's not to say you should never use them - it just didn't feel like this song came to a real conclusion in the end. I will comment that you've done a great job expanding on such a short source; while both staying true to the original and keeping the track sonically interesting to listen to. I'd yes this, but I want to hear if that string part is intentional or not before it hits the front page so: Yes, conditional on string (flub?)

OCR02393 - *YES* Quest for Glory 'Late Snows of Winter'
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Didn't hear the original sub, but really enjoying what you've brought to this track. I played through the re-release of heros quest way back in the day. So, for some context, this track is associated with one of the few safe spots to rest outside of the Inn (you don't want to be out a night in the forest unless you're pretty strong). So you've brought more energy & epicness to the original, but still retained the same mysterious calm the original held. Melodies were nicely played with while still retaining a clear connection to the original. Guitar sounded a bit out of tune, so something to watch out for. Production is overall nice. Guitar & orchestra comes through clearly. Drums are punchy without being overbearing towards the other elements. Heard that wrong note at 2:10 as OA did, but that's the only one I detected. Nice work here man, I approve Yes -
OCR02389 - *YES* Chrono Trigger 'Lucid States'
Nutritious replied to Liontamer's topic in Judges Decisions
Nice groovy take here on a way overone source. Agreed that the bass is quite heavy - that kick takes up SO much space. Also agreed that clean vocals felt pasted on. They could've used some more wetness to sit alongside everything else a bit more nicely. Besides that, not a whole lot to complain about. Generally cleanly mixed sound and solid production overall. I guess I could nitpick some harsh freqs in the effected vocals too, but really minor point there. Sidenote: while I was and am a huge fan of the soundtrack, zeal wasn't near the top of my favorite tracks from CT. Not sure why it always gets so much attention, but I'm not complaining. Source is all over this mix, but is changed up, modulated, sometimes mangled, which definitely brings a fresh new look at an oft remixed OST. Nice work Yes -
Big McLargehuge Also, I approve of this thread. My brother and I had a semi-tradition of turning on the annual MST3K Turkey Day marathon in the background over the holidays back in the day.

*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog's Gameworld 'SoNICO Colors'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I think DS really summed this up well. The synths were on the vanilla side - felt like they needed some more nuance & interest for the style here. As mentioned before, drums really stuck out here as not gelling with the rest. I'll also echo the missing low end here. I can hear bass, but it and kick really aren't using up any low end space. On the positive side the strings and piano were quite nice sounding. I can see where Zirc would be coming from in his suggestions for a new approach. This kinda feels like it's suffering a bit from an identity crisis. I'm all for genre-bending, but things still have to work together cohesively. I just don't think the dnb drums, organic strings/piano, & vanilla-ish synths are clicking right now. No, resubmit please -
I'd be fine with building off of what Juan had previously as long as he is. If not, and you have some good arrangement ideas, you can run solo with it if you like. ============================== In other news, final cutoff deadline set. See first post! I'm gonna be quite a nuisance in the coming days harrasing you guys for final wavs.

Nice work man. Production is very clear, despite all the heavy elements present here. Energy is pretty high throughout the track, but you changed things up enough to keep it interesting. Great job on the guitar sequencing - especially on the chuggas. Could've fooled me, dude. Drums writing was also very strong here with a lot of changeups & fills. EDIT: Ok back for the arrangement part of the vote. I ended up having to stopwatch this as the source isn't blatantly obvious to me for most of the song: :00 - :36 source (chugga and lead) :37 - 1:09 original 1:10 - 1:36 source (chugga sounds like modified version of source) 1:37 - 3:32 original??? Am I missing something here?? I've been listening to both the source and remix over and over and can't pick up any source usage from the entire last half of the song. Can you guys chime in and straighten me out if I'm totally missing things here? For now I'm gonna go No, resub unless someone can chime in with additional source usage. -

Not bad dude. Very nice attention to detail - I can tell you spend a lot of time on the various effects. Trying not to beat dead horse, I'm gonna echo that this needs some balance work (others have already covered how) as well as some drum variation. A little work in both areas would likely bring a yes vote from me. No, resubmit please -
Almost definitely: (2007/12/07) Super Mario 64 'Through the Flames' was my first accepted track (after being rejected on my first submission) and still is on hold for posting. Gonna beat Fishy's record in Feb 2012. But partly my fault since I took over as the album's project director . It will get done!

OCR02370 - *YES* Sonic Advance 'The Glacier's Peak'
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
For some reason, this reminds me of Mazedude's Reich Lake. I guess something about the repeating chromatic percussion . Definitely agreed that this is on the dry side. It didn't really bother me until the piano melody entered at :22. I think this could've been pushed back & softened with some reverb without losing the effect you're going for. Some of the high strings stuck out as dry as well at 1:37, which leaves them exposed and loses some of their realism. Overall, though, the production is nice and clear sounding. I was worried about how conservative this way gonna be, but you brought some additional interpretation as it progressed, while keeping the background underpinning everything. A few notes I wasn't too sure about in the :42-:50 range which may have been outside the chord; a couple notes in 2:41-2:43 just sounded flubbed with some awkward cutoffs. I don't think I'm going to go conditional on something like this, but it might not hurt to ask about these. Various minor issues aside, this is a very nice, laid-back track you've put together here, Jeff. Yes (ask about piano notes) -
OA nailed it here. Very good use of tempo changes here throughout. I'll echo again the rubato comment. Also, I would've liked to hear a bit more delicate velocity tones (not sure if that's the sample or whatever). Nice arrangement, though not a huge deviation, has a lot of nice flourishes and additions. For some reason :30 makes me think of chrono trigger. Yes
