OCR02363 - *YES* Cave Story 'The Unbroken'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Ok, sorry for the delay. Edited the first post with new version. Intro is mostly the same, but made some arrangement changes later. If you need a breakdown, I can provide. -
*NO* Super Mario Bros. 'Get Down Like a Goomba'
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
First off, production was sweet. Perhaps a bit loud in the intro in some of the freqs, but you clearly know your stuff. That said, unfortunately, this mix is far too liberal for OCR standards. Only source I could pick out was a couple direct quotes of the mario theme at :00 - :09, :42 - :58, & 1:28 - 1:30. We're really looking for more overt source usage as well as some level of interpretation/personalization on source themes. Given your production chops, I definitely hope we can get something from you a bit more in line with site standards. No -
OCR02288 - *YES* Pokémon Red Version 'Abandoned Battlefield'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I think Vinnie hit the nail on the head here. Yes, there's some muddiness that could be cleaned up, and some moderate compression would bring out some of the more quiet sections (especially the intro). However, the arrangement is fantastic and brings a lot of emotion to the piece. I loved the switchover around 2:00 from the more upbeat first half, to the more brooding, melancholy second half. Music box was a very nice touch at the end. Overall, arrangement outweighs production gripes IMO Yes -
Yeah, lots of high-end hiss at 1:28. It's a problem as well at 2:25. Seems like your pads are the big offenders here. It got a bit fatiguing on the ears after a few listens. Otherwise, there's general clutter/muddiness that needs to be cleaned up at :10 & 2:25. As mentioned, the samples weren't the greatest (drums especially), but that alone wouldn't be cause for rejection in my book. You've actually done quite a good job crafting a nice soundscape from free samples, which def isn't easy to do. Arrangement checks out here. Nice expansion on the source melodies. Leads get a little crazy, but I can dig it. So definitely get those high freqs under control and work on mixing balance. No, resubmit please

Groove bias! I LOVE this track. Sure, it gets repetative, but it's short enough that it doesn't get annoying. The beat is infectious and I love how the bassline moves around so much & interacts with some of the pluck synths later. It sure keeps a lot of interest in the oft-neglected lower end of the mix.

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
Nutritious replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01462/ Listed source is Bionic Commando Theme, though I'm pretty sure it's the Area 2 (& others) music. The three NES mixes we have list the same sourcetune from the NES version of the game, but they remix the Area 1 music. So, unless it's different in the gameboy version of the game, this should be renamed to Area 2 or whatever the official name of the OST track is. -
*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 'A Hog in His Prime' *RESUB*
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Gonna keep it short as most everything's been covered pretty thoroughly. Fix up the guitar tone (eq mainly) & smooth out the overall arrangement/progression of the song. Wasn't mentioned specifically before, but there are some loose performances issues at 1:19, 4:19 (listen to guitar plucks and recorder together). I've heard similar guitar eq/production issues with several of your recent songs, Brandon, but I'm assuming these were all subbed prior to you receiving any feedback on it. So I look forward to hearing some of your more recent stuff where you've had a chance to address this. No -
finished I really like this remix
Nutritious replied to erineclipse's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
It's part of the OCR album for Sonic 2: Headgehog Heaven. And, as Rozo mentioned, this forum is for posting of your own remixes. Gonna lock this one down. -
OCR02317 - *YES* Gitaroo Man 'FML (If I Could Drift Away)'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Not much to add to what has already been said, honestly. The mixing issues, chord choices & muddiness are definitely factors. Very nice arrangement, though. And the overall atmosphere is very cool. I could honestly see this one going either way, and I'm pretty torn myself. In the end, I feel like the few production weaknesses of the track are compensated for by the strengths in arrangement & writing, so I'm going Yes (borderline) -
This is one of those collaborations where the strengths of both mixers shine. I can say from experience this definitely isn't always the case. Love the crunchy, distorted drums halc brought. He seemed to restrain himself a bit here, prefering to set the stage and let Stevo cover the leads. The pace was slowed, but felt delibrate and the arrangement was pretty focused. Nice performance overall by Stevo. Kinda felt like the lead guitar lost its focus a bit around 4:12 in where to take the melody, but recovers pretty quick. Nice work here guys, love it. Yes

*NO* Super Mario Bros. 2 'Hayride Dreams'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Very creative approach here. I was worried things were going to be too coverish starting out, but as things progressed you brought some nice personalization to the themes. I particularly enjoyed the quick song cameos you tucked in there - the original Super Mario Bros theme at 1:21 was a brilliant touch. So, yeah, that brings us down to production. Basically, my only beef with this (that has been mentioned to death already) is timing issues. I think OA put it well, though, that it brings a certain charm to the song. Given the genre of the song, I feel it's not as big of an issue as it would be in other contexts. I certainly would like to get a tighter version if possible, but I don't have a problem with this one eking through. Yes, borderline -
Sounds like some mad dblue glitch abuse here I appreciate what you're trying to do with glitching up some of the original sfx at the intro and 2:16, but the execution isn't there. If you're gonna use sfx like this, try to do it in a way that compliments the mix. Gonna echo OA on the bass sample. I'm not entirely sure an EQ fix will be enough to help it - though certainly try it. Balance issues were also apparent here. For example, the bells and pads that come in at :15 are mixed very loud. Add the lead at :28, which is also mixed pretty loud, and what sounds like another LFO pad type thing, and things get very loud & crowded. If you can work on toning back some of the offenders, it should really help the mixing/loudness issue in general. On the arrangement side, I'm concerned about the sections that are rehashed fairly near verbatum from the first half of the song. 2:17 - 3:40 is essentially a retread of :00 - 1:32. Nothing wrong with bringing familiar themes back, but you need to bring something more/different/fresh to the table the next time around. Sorry if this comes off as a pretty negative judgement. I've focused on a lot of issues on this track, but there are some very nice elements as well (lead & synth sounds, pretty solid drum work, etc), which were present as well. So don't be discouraged - you've definitely got a good start here, but work is still needed. No, resubmit please

Question about buying FL Studio
Nutritious replied to Breakdown64's topic in Music Composition & Production
Can't really comment on the academic version, but I believe you can buy the boxed version through Image Line directly. As with all FL Studio DAW purchases, you can use the affiliate link of a current FL Studio owner for a 10% discount. If you'd like to do that mine is: http://affiliate.image-line.com/BDDDFEH481 FYI it benefits both the buyer and affiliate. One warning, though, IIRC the boxed version does NOT come with free lifetime upgrades (the software-only version does). You have to purchase it separately. With that in mind, as well as shipping costs, the downloadable version is really a better value. -
Navigate to the loop in your browser window (left side of FL screen), right click it, select open in Fruity Slicer. Fix original tempo if necessary. Now you can rearrange the notes easily. Also see: beat slicing. EDIT: I think I misread what your problem was. You may want to mess around with different stretching modes too, like slice map (or whatever that's called)

Mentioned this back when I Mod Reviewed this on the feedback forums, but the piano writing is too much on the rigid/simplistic side - mainly on the left hand repeating parts. Good advice already mentioned to get the pads pushed back (they sounded like synth brass to me initially and they still kinda do) and see what you can do about cleaning up the general soundscape. Very pretty song, though, and I'm looking forward to seeing this one come back again. No, resubmit please

Well, right, that's what concatenate does :/. Go to another column next to your data and hit the formula button. Search for Concatenante. It'll bring up a little box that'll walk you through it. This will automatically combine data from both cells into a third cell. Anyway, wayward son is suggesting the same thing, just doing it all in one function - so that may be easier for you.

*NO* Kingdom Hearts 2 'Spaniatronic' *RESUB*
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Man, I was so onboard with this up until 1:08, with the really up in your face & rigid acoustic guitar. The following section at 1:21 was also a weak point, with the too loud synth sequence cluttering things up. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the synths - I feel like you could just drop them entirely if you wanted - but at the very least push them further back. Trumpet high notes definitely sounded fakey at the very end. Not entirely sure what you can do about that, though. It just sounds pitch-shifted instead of performed/sampled if you know what I mean. Larry mentioned that many sections needed padding to fill them out, and that may have been what you were going for with the synth pattern. It sounds a bit empty in the lows & low-mid areas until the synth comes in and fills that hole. I can hear the off-note bass you have going, but it's quiet and gets buried in more busy areas. I'd recommend bringing it up and expanding the bass work and letting it have those low freqs, rather than the synths. That said, very nice arrangement here. There was some impressive sequencing work to get the most out of your samples. Just needs some additional production work to get it over the bar. No, resubmit please -

Awesome, gonna grab this when I get home. Thanks for the find -
Didn't look at what Phil did, but anyway. Assuming I understand what you're trying to do, you could concatenate A and B in a separate column (D), then vlookup on D for the values you want & return the corresponding C value.

*NO* Legend of Zelda 'Evigilo Insperatus' *RESUB*
Nutritious replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Gotta echo the concerns on the drums here. They really stick out over everything and are pretty stiff sounding. It's really a beautiful ambient soundscape you've developed here, which really doesn't gel with the percussion work. There's some good advice above on how to fix them. Got some distortion near the end with the entrance of the low piano notes. Sounds like there's a lot of fighting with the various other elements here - notably the kick. Kick has a ton of reverb at this point, which may be the main culprit (I still heard some distortion even when the low piano notes stopped playing). There's lots of promise here, but production needs some tightening up. Hope to see this one back here soon. No, resubmit please -
Since you mentioned that your own flac files work, you could try converting them to wav and back to flac with your own conversion method. The only other thing that came to mind is I noticed is two of the three songs have a special character (accented e).

OCR02258 - *YES* Seiken Densetsu 3 'Starlight Festival'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Very capably performed piece here. Loved the dynamic changes you brought here, especially coming into sections like 2:05 and 3:14. I actually can hear the high end ringing that OA is talking about. It was most prominent at 1:02 - 1:10 & 1:57 - 2:05. It sounds like a high end mechanical whine or something - could be an artifact of the recording process or some sort of harmonic resonance. I don't think it's a dealbreaker as it's really subtle, but it would be nice if we could get a version without it. (EDIT: Later comment: the more I listen to this piece, the more I notice the ringing. I really would prefer to have a version without the ringing if possible. I'm not going to go conditional on it, but it would certainly be nice.) I can hear what Vinnie is saying about the higher notes lacking body. It sounds like the piece is a bit low-mid heavy, which is going to favor the low end notes over the high end. Still, I guess I don't feel that it's as big of an issue here as he. The arrangement is definitely on the conservative side. Much of the structure and the melodies from the original are retained here. You have brought some nice flourishes, embellishments, and additions of your own to bring it over the arrangement bar. Yes -
Right on. Definitely loved Lei's theme from Tekken 3. WAV files aren't lossless? That's news to me...

*NO* Super Metroid & Metroid Prime 'I, Samus (Godwave)'
Nutritious replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Not much to say here that hasn't already been covered. There's a lot of reverb and long decays on various stuff here, which is contributing to the muddy soundscape. Gotta also second the unnatural quick note changes on the choir and the drum repetativeness. Plenty of advice on this thread to follow up on and get this one sent back to us. No, resubmit please -

Hey guys, I was gonna tweak the intro a bit to get more source in there, so please hold off until I post a new version. Thanks .
