  1. Awright, update (finally!) A couple other music projects kept me away from this for a couple weeks, but I've been able to get back into it and start working again. Updated: -New bass synth (geez that old one was loud) -New strings -Added more content to flesh it out -Rerecorded Sax, now more in sync and tuned -More content in general -Worked on balances and EQing To Do: -Probably another sax section on latter half of song -Revamp the drums
  2. Yeah, that's what I figured I was going to have to do with Sound Forge, but didn't know if the extra step was necessary. Thanks, Zircon.
  3. Am I missing something, or is there no option to use variable bitrate encoding for mp3s in FL Studio?
  4. Married for a year and a half now. First bebeh 3 months away
  5. Along with what was stated before, the brand and efficiency of a power supply is more important than the wattage. If you're still trying to decide on a PSU, I'd recommend reading THIS thread.
  6. I was gonna suggest the same thing. I needed a decent recording setup, but didn't have the cash for all the gear like mixer/preamp and such. Bought the CO1U and it's worked great for recording my saxophone.
  7. Ok, a few suggestions: -At the beginning with the ocean wave sound, I'd say put it more in the background by lowering the volume. Also, give it some reverb or something, because currently it cuts out between each wave sound, so it sounds fake -The breathy flute at the beginning jumps around on notes and sounds too rigid. I'd try adjusting the velocities and not jump to higher notes suddenly, try to "humanize" it a bit The rest of the song isn't really my type of genre, so I can't comment on it.
  8. Ok, so it's been a while since I've updated this song - it's for good reason! The past few weeks have been spent brainstorming, getting new equipment, trying new parts, and recording. So, finally, a new update. Significant changes: -Synth Lead(s) gone (good riddance) -Replaced middle section with completely new/original section -Added alto saxophone part to replace synth lead (it's pretty much my first time recording for a song, so be nice) -Worked on mastering and EQing -Various other minor changes
  9. Ahh, this is sounding awesome. A suggestion on the electric guitar riff from :34 - :50 though would be to add a little strumming or rythym to it. Right now it only hits once for each notes and sounds very mechanical/unrealistic. There's a low synth below it (it hits on several of the off-beats) that has a good pattern which you could match with the guitar.
  10. Umm, when I went to that site, my anti-virus blocked execution of a trojan script (Exploit-MS06-014 according to McAfee). Don't know if it's a false positive or something, but just thought I'd let you guys know.
  11. Thanks guys, this is exactly the info I was looking for. I'm working on getting a new mouthpiece setup more suited for jazz. Also, might pick up some softer reeds - 3 1/2 are pretty tough now since I haven't been playing nearly as much as I did in college. Much appreciated.
  12. I've been working on a remix for a while now and began recording on my alto for an improv section. I'm fine on the notes to play and recording, however, I'm having problems with the tone of my playing. It's essentially a flat tone that doesn't lend itself well to jazz or funk-type improv. I played for several years in high school and college, but that was almost exclusively classical-type music. If you listen to live performers, there's a big difference in their play style in that they seem to shape the notes they're playing. Is there anyone that can help out with this type of question? I know there are at least a few sax players among the community, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
  13. Well, went in as soon as Best Buy opened and they didn't have anything (aside from no-name games and those Jumppack demo things or whatever they're called). Don't get your hopes up... Eh, I used to work there and whenever people couldn't buy something yet, they'd just set it aside in the back. Only time they really enforce not allowing employees to put stuff aside or buy early is big releases like halo 2.
  14. Oh man, wish I would've known about this sooner. I'm only 20 minutes away. Will still try to make it though. *edit again* Bummer, can't make it. Hope it goes well...
  15. I just posted a new version with both synths panned opposite: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=621908&songID=5034587 Still trying to decide if I like it...
  16. Song updated: -Distortion gone (as far as I can tell) -Replaced the lead synth, trying something out -Various tweaks -Fattened up the kick sound -Titled the song http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=621908&songID=4974782
  17. Song updated: -Still working on mastering to elminate distortion (especially near ending), any tips would be greatly appreciated -Added more content on buildup sections and ending To be done: -Automate effects on some of the sounds -More variation on notes/inflection of accompanying synth
  18. Some Big Foot monster truck game for NES I rented twice as a kid. "Races" consisted of tapping the left and right direction on the controller as fast as possible to make your truck move faster (resulting in very sore thumbs on those old NES controllers if I remember right). You could never seem to beat the computer player on tractor drag races no matter what. You could buy new and better parts for your truck though, so I guess that's why I liked it.
  19. Not a bad first tune. Here are a few suggestions of things I'd work on: The clap/drum loop from :19 - :28 gets a little repetative with the drum fill playing on every measure. Specifically, I mean the double snare hit at the end of each loop. It's probably more of a style thing, but I'd break it up to only have that fill play once or twice through the section. I like the drum roll at :31, but it sounds uneven. Might be on purpose, but if not you may want to clean it up to a more even rhythm. The pad playing the chords from 1:26 - 1:49 seem a little bland and subdued. I'd recommend trying to give it a little more style and feeling. That's all I can think of for now, so I hope it helps. Keep working on it!
  20. Updated version up at same link: -Working on mastering the tracks to eliminate distortion -Some rearrangement & changed effects/tweaked instruments
  21. Wow, yeah, I'm liking this so far. REALLY digging that guitar riff.
  22. There was a good tutorial by Zircon in the Remixing section, but it looks like it's a broken link now (probably due to forum restructuring). Anyway, I'm not sure that you'd want to put a compressor on your entire song, especially on an orchestral piece. Rather, I'd pick out which instruments are peaking out and put a light compressor on them - strong enough to prevent clipping, but not too strong as to distort the sound too much. Here's my (very) basic (and probably not very accurate) understanding of compressors, I hope this helps: Threshold: What level you want the compressor to kick in at. For example, setting it at -1dB won't affect your sound until the sound reaches a noise level of -1dB - pretty straightforward. Ratio: Almost like the intensity that you want the compressor to act on your sound. Example, ratio of 3:1 will only allow 1dB of sound through for every 3dB your sound exceeds the threshold level. The higher the setting, the more compression is taking place. Attack: The delay in which the compressor will kick in after the threshold is reached. Release: Similar to attack except on the back end of the sound. (If you can't tell, I'm a little fuzzy on Attack/Release. Someone can probably explain them a lot better) Gain: Once the sound is compressed, gain will allow you to bring the entire sound (not just what reaches the threshold level) up to whatever it is set to. In a sense, this allows you to turn up the volume of the track while using the other settings to prevent it from clipping. I hope this helps.
