  1. Really fun! At first, I wasn't sure where you were going with it, because it felt like this weird Tom Waits/"Circus from Hell" kind of feel, and then as soon as the theme came in, it's like "yeah!" Someone above wrote about smiling as soon as they heard the melody - I think that this is just one of those tunes that makes you happy and you've done it a great justice! I think that you captured a lot of the fun that's in the melody in your arrangement! Yeah! Nice work!
  2. Dug the mix! Really awesome interpretation - I almost didn't recognize it at first! You really bended the ear, especially with an original that's a bit more static, you really took it to the next level! Wasn't too keen on the ending, just because the energy was so strong leading up to it... then it faded off. BUT, a lot of people dug that too and it was an artistic choice to make, so it's definitely not a knock on the work. Can't wait to hear more of your stuff!
  3. I really agree with this - really cohesive work! It doesn't feel like a mash-up at all; while all of the pieces were different, you still gave them a feeling that they fit together, which is really epic. Awesome patches and samples, solid production... yeah! I love this, amazing work!
  4. Members on the first page stated that it could be played by "high school band," and that "should be telling of something." Ummmm... that shouldn't be telling of anything - there are masterpieces for a secondary school wind ensemble and one should not downplay the legitimacy of "high school band" This isn't to say that I don't agree with the fact that the piece is very wind-heavy and could probably be played by a wind band, which I think is a strength. I hate when symphony composers just cake everything on for strings - if you have all of these colours for orchestral, you'd better use them! I think that Jeremy's done exceptional work here, most particularly at the first transition (bassoon bass line; awesome writing for clarinet and oboe, I hear a little bit of Mahler in there...). I think that the strongest element of the piece is that it DOESN'T rely completely on the string section; in fact, it's mostly played by everyone else in the (synthesized) orchestra. The ending is a little bit weak for such a boisterous arrangement - I think that the loudest part is the first/second repetition of the first theme. Still, brilliant remix, really enjoy.
  5. Truly excellent work! (as with all of the work submitted/composed by these two) You've done a great piece some great justice with this arrangement. I think that there'd be a lot of pressure arranging such a behemoth of a piece that's SO awesome and the both of you really stepped up to the plate - can't wait to hear the other movements! Nitpicky stuff - I would've liked to hear a bit clarity on the string attacks. They sound good when paired with brass or xylo. On the topic of xylo, be a little bit leary of where you put the xylo when it's being paired with something in a run (i.e. 1:41 to 1:48ish) because if you put it in the middle, it'll sound a bit mushy, then get really clear, then as it gets lower, a bit mushy again. Also, it would've been really awesome to see you take some more creative control with the arrangement (three mushroom dances comes to mind, which was amazing arranging), as yours is pretty true to the original. Again, very nitpicky, but only because it's so awesome! Also, I would kill to know how you did the choral voices because they sound amazing. I love you how named the piece was well, very Carmina-Burana-esque, which is the feel that jumped out at me right away! Again, can't wait to hear the others, awesome work guys!
  6. holy crap! that's what reu looks like? nice playing! that's my boy! well-done! yeah!! I love his work from the CS project and his other remixes! yeah yeah yeah!!
  7. Are there still tickets? i may be willing to make the trek from Winnipeg if tickets are still up for grabs...
  8. I agree with BlueEnvy a bit - a bit more direction would be nice. It's okay, it quotes the melody in a coherent and an appropriate sort of way, but it left me wanting more. What else could you add to it? You've made a nice base painting, but it seemed a bit... incomplete. Is there anything else you could bring to the table to add more colour to the work? Really nice production and melodic input for the work, but even when you finish and submit a work, think of the next step... what could you have added to the work...?
  9. Dammit! I'm from Winnipeg and I'm in Sydney right now, but I'm gone soon! Sorry guys, seems I'm out! anytime anyone wants a Winnipeg Meetup... anyone... *cricket*...*cricket*. Have fun! can't wait to see the pics!
  10. Really nice work! I think that you made the 4/4 sound as natural as the original 6/8... to be honest, I had a little bit of a hesitation of how it would sound, just because there are so many duple-to-triple-meter changes that sound... I don't know... awkward? But it didn't! It was super convincing! You did a lot of really cool stuff with rhythm, especially in your percussion/drum loop stuff... very impressed! It says your a newcomer, sure as hell doesn't sound like it... good luck!
  11. did they release starcraft ghost? I remember thinking that it looked really cool, but never say anything from it...
  12. Could it be a StarCraft MMO? That would be wild... I don't even know what that would be like, but I wouldn't want to be the SCV that meets up with another dude who's a battlecruiser...
  13. Zircon, brilliant... I really love all of the style changes and fusion of musical eras that all seem to cascade upon each other - it's like a royal rumble between Mitsuda and J.S. Bach, the Danny Elfman comes in with a chair from under the rink, and then MixMaster Mike and Joseph Haydn run down the ramp and pummel everyone... ... Amazing production, great mix, brilliant interpretation, too many good things to say!
  14. Really strong arrangement! Production is really strong and I think that you picked the perfect song to do with acoustic guitars. There are parts that sound a little bit tentative in the solo but all of your melodic stuff that plays off of the game is really nice! Are there more ways that you could've interpretted it? Maybe in the form? Range? Now that you can do it, push further - how much further can you go? Great work, I really enjoyed it!
  15. I want to go to Peabody, but no more university for me ... and Sounds awesome! I wish I didn't live so far away! It looks like you guys had such an amazing time! Anytime someone wants to have a Winnipeg meetup...? *cricket*... *cricket*...
  16. I loved it - I thought that you tastefully added your vocals to the work! The melody was good, maybe could've had a bit more direction or motion, but it really contributed to the really busy backgrounds (and vice versa, you know what I mean ) Really strong lyrics, particularly "space and time are friends of mine", good line! I don't think I have a whole lot of constructive things to say, maybe a bit more direction in the melody, but other than that minute suggestion, I think that you did an incredible job! Keep up the great work!
  17. Me too, another VGM podcast would be amazing, especially if it highlights OCR
  18. I agree with Coop and Atmuh especially, but I think that it's really key to distinguish between A SINGLE OCR PODCAST and a slough of other podcasts that beef up and feature OCR all the time. I have a video game music podcast (http://www.songofthefates.com) and while asking permission to play people's remixes, they're almost always OCR ones - OCR is like the Oxford or Cambridge of video game music and the remixers/composers/arrangers are the up-and-coming (if not already established) scholars in the field. Lots of video game music is considered art music and art music has been studied for centuries. Another example is the Super Koopa Troopa Show, who often had OCR remixes on (especially when Chrono Symphonic was released). The podcast knew where game music is, where it's going and who to turn to for high-quality reinterpretations of music that VGM fans love. The answer: right here. OCR has a big presence in VGM podcasts, but the problem is not the quantity of OCR on other podcasts, but just the small volume of VGM podcasts out there, with VGDJ being the top of the food chain until January. I'd be totally up for listening to some new podcasts and to keep plugging OCR on mine, but yeah, the line between "a single OCR podcast" and "a podcast that plugs OCR" is a pretty important one.
  19. I'm in Australia for most of May, but it'd be a good jaunt from Winnipeg... it's sort of close... ish... (not really, but it'd be an awesome time)
  20. I love this remix - amazing work. it's got a new-jazz/pat methany/bela fleck/joe cocker (who isn't really a jazz musician) kind of feel. Of all of the instruments, I really love the way you've mixed the vibes and guitars; the vibes just give this awesome shimmer to your guitar sound. Amazing groove, pulse, note placement - very delicious. Also, your patches are amazing... unless of course, this is all live, which would explain your awesome sounds, especially your drums. (sorry for all the jazz talk, just got back from the Brandon Jazz Festival, which is only a 4 hour drive from the Ontario border... but like, 20 hours from Lake Ontario, lol) Keep up the amazing work!
  21. Right on, guys! Solid arrangement, nice interpretation of the melody and cool reinstrumentation (kind of a smooth jazz feel). I really dig the breakdown about 1/3 of the way, when the guitar starts its accompaniment... very tasty!
  22. Definitely dig the mix, pixietricks It gives the haunting melody of Radical Dreamers somewhere to look to when the lyrics are attached - nicely done. I also like how all of the accompaniment is really static until the last minute of the song because it allows the listener to really focus on the melody and the lyrics (it reminds of me of klangfarbenmelodie in Schoenberg's works, where there's only one chord through the whole orchestra for like 10 minutes and you can hear it move from colour to colour, but that's a whole other thing...). On the other side of that, it makes a the switch at 3:05 a much bigger deal, and it's like "yeah!" I really dig the harmonies during that part, because it's less intrusive but still really, really nice. The kick drum is a bit loud for my taste, but that's cool, the production is really good for the rest of it. Awesome job, I really it! (Good luck on the recital!)
  23. Oh, I live in Winnipeg, the cold city is but too far... good luck! rock the shepherd (on the rock)! Kenley
  24. Well played, Eliot - awesome samples, complex beats, great production... wicked as usual. I also really dug the hints of Kefka in there! (Unless I'm totally crazy, but it sounded like there were!) I hope Montreal is treating you amazingly, if you get back in Winnipeg, send me a note! Happy Holidays! Kenley
