How do you process YOUR orchestra?
GarretGraves replied to GarretGraves's topic in Music Composition & Production
the thing is that I've heard the demos on Garritan's website and they have some awesome, crips quality demos using this software. and EWQLSO is like $1000 so i guess for now im left with this. I know I can get it to sound good cause other people have done it! I have no controller. I'm just pointing and clicking. I am however looking around for one but havent had the time to shop. Any recommendations? -
I've tried a dozen ways using GPO to get a good solid sound out of it but I cant seem to get what I want out of it. I've thrown multiband compressors, all kinds of verb (not all at once) and have tried and tried again to mix all the instruments and trying to mimic what I hear of the movie soundtracks I have. (Cold Mountain, etc. Dramatic films). But no matter what I do it still sounds TOTALLY fake and not very crisp at all. What am I missing?

Line 6 Pod/etc. tone bundles
GarretGraves replied to Level 99's topic in Music Composition & Production
Yeah I'd like to hear it. I've been playing guitar for 20 years or so (im 26 now) and I still get jealous of other people's guitar tones. Just when I think I got a tone I adore, someone comes up with something identicle to Satrianni's or whatever (which is what im lookin for). It wasn't until recently I started to learn about the tech side of guitar playing so now im trying to learn all I can to get that nice crisp sound im lookin for. Any info you have would definately help. I myself am using a Dead McPhantom with a DiMarzio Evolution humbucker at the bridge and a Dean stock at the neck. I installed the DiMarzio myself but something tells me I shoulda went Seamore Duncan. -
Line 6 Pod/etc. tone bundles
GarretGraves replied to Level 99's topic in Music Composition & Production
This Line 6 Pod XT. Is it any better than the GearBox? By any chance could you provoide a sample of a great distorted high-gain guitar using these presets? also, do you use humbucker pickups, single-coil pickups, or a telecaster? -
Amplitube 2 latency issues/popping problems
GarretGraves replied to GarretGraves's topic in Music Composition & Production
crap. I don't got an amp. ya know, you'd figure if people were getting this problem even on behemoth machines, they'd have a fix for it. I'm debating going on their website for tech help. But i thought I'd try here first. -
Ok so I got Amplitube 2 Metal a month or so back. The first thing I noticed was the latency problem. There was a delay between strumming my guitar and the sound. (duh). So I toyed around with the settings and discovered that if I lower the buffer size to 128 in the control panel for my Line6 Toneport DI, the problem is solved. But then I start getting pops once every few minutes and if I play with FL or Audition opened they get worse. And raising the buffer size to 256 and beyond INCREASES the latency problem. I cant record this way. Is there a way to fix this issue? my specs are as follows: Intel Core 2 duo 6300 @ 1.86 Ghz 4 gigs of RAM (Win XP only reads 3.25 tho) Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card.

Do all DAWs sound different?
GarretGraves replied to GarretGraves's topic in Music Composition & Production
Yoozer? Man up and BUY it? Of course I'm going to BUY things. But if you had the opportunity to TRY something BEFORE you bought it, wouldn't you take it? Seems logical to me. Besides, I'm not gonna waste money on something I can't use. But I dunno. I checked in Device Setup and it shows my ASIO TonePort DI-S that came with the GearBox. It's connected through the Line-in on the Audigy 2. (Not sure if there's another or better way to connect it.) I'm lookin it over. I'll try and mess with it. If anyone knows anything please post. Thanks! EDIT: I noticed something. I recorded on a stereo track (Stereo In/Stereo Out) I can only pan left but it still stays center. Then I made a couple of mono tracks (Stereo Left/Stereo Out) and vice versa (Stereo Right/Stereo Out). Same effect. Pan left and you still get sound. Pan right you get nothing. The panner turns into a volume knob. I also noticed (and maybe i shoulda mentioned this earlier) on the Toneport, there are 2 analog outs (1 and 2) and a D.I. Out. Dunno what the D.I. Out is for (digital? I'll read the manual later) But out of the Analog 1 and 2 outs I'm only using the 1 and not the 2. Is 1 for left and 2 for right? You'd figure they would label them as such if that were the case. And I've only been using 1 and not 2 and I could pan just fine in Audition so it never really crossed my mind til now. Thoughts? -
Do all DAWs sound different?
GarretGraves replied to GarretGraves's topic in Music Composition & Production
Oh yeah it's stereo. Im not quite sure how ancient Cubase is. I'll look into it when I get back from work. As for the 'sound of the DAW', I'm not really worried about it so much as I want a better interface than Audition. Audition seems limiting to me now. And it handles certain things differently than other DAWs i've used at school. And people have sworn by Cubase and I have SOME experience with that and Logic through recording arts classes. Since I don't have a mac, I chose to grab Cubase from a friend of mine. I've learned that if you want to progress in this field, Audition will only hold you over as a beginner. So it's time for me to move on. Thanks for the help guys! EDIT: Ok It's Cubase 5. The newer one. -
Do all DAWs sound different?
GarretGraves replied to GarretGraves's topic in Music Composition & Production
Im using version 5.1 and my sound card is an SB Audigy 2 -
Sounds stupid but let me explain. Do you find that some recording quality is different or worse between different DAWs? No plugins. Just bare. Cause I'm wondering if Adobe Audition isn't cutting it anymore. EDIT: Follow up question. I just installed Cubase and for some stupid reason I cant get the audio tracks to pan. I'm sliding this thing that says "pan" left and right and all it does is turn the volume up and down. I tried recording both mono and stereo tracks. same effect. what gives?

New Member - First OCR - Opinions?
GarretGraves replied to dbrown1986's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
It is repetitive and lacking timbre (tone color). Arrangement is something that I myself have never been able to tackle. And I also get confused about it. Like, when is too much original work TOO much where it strays completely from the source of the remix? And when is there not enough original touches? Stuff like this seems to be the reason why this particular forums exists so to take a sort of trial-and-error approach to submission. Trust me. You're gonna go through a LOT of tries before you create something the judges find worthy of accepting. Ever heard the term "audiophile"? These guys are audio NAZIS! But that's not a bad thing. They are pros and will not hesitate to give you a critical review but considering how skilled they are they can teach you a thing or two. I find with every failed submission I learn a lot more about my skills. Sometimes I get depressed and discouraged when I get rejected. But after a week or two of sulking and questioning why my sound isn't as fat as the other mixers or why my guitar seems to be lacking a quality greatly needed, I take a goooood sharp look at when other people are doing and try to gain some inspiration from them. I have yet to get a remix posted. But I'll be damned if I don't gain some experience from every attempt. -

It actually does help, Jago. Thanks. But I'm still having issues as far as controlling the samples. Like I cant make strings crescendo without setting more than one trigger on the piano roll and it makes it sound robotic. I'll keep toying with it. -

I need a USB recording interface. Which one?
GarretGraves replied to The Biznut's topic in Music Composition & Production
I bought the Line 6 Greabox Silver with free gold upgrade for $100. I get a pretty good sound out of it for metal at least. I tried Amplitube with the TonePort that came with the GearBox but I get latency issues with it. Like a 40 ms delay. It doesnt sound like it always but you definately feel it in your playing. Im not sure what ASIO you're supposed to use with it. But for something cheap and fast, Gearbox is something I recommend. I also hear Guitar Rig 3 is great. But I believe they're up to 4 now. Might be worth lookin into. EDIT: Is this possibly better than the Gearbox? -

You're right. There is an update. But I'm outta funds at the moment plus I am unsure if the new version sounds better or not. If someone could confirm THAT that would be great. EDIT: By the by, my version os from 2004. -
WIP - Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
GarretGraves replied to Suitmonster's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Hithats seem just a tad loud. That's really the only thing that's buggin' me. But I like this. I thought the applause in the middle was pretty random but I took it as a comedic moment which I always welcome. -
Doom II remix WIP in need of opinons.
GarretGraves replied to GarretGraves's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Well said. Well, what do you use for strings, Meteo? I'm using Garritan Personal Orchestra which I keep hearing is pretty awesome to have at an affordable price. When I the stock reverb in FL i get better results with it than this Garritan Reverb plugin. I'm still learning how to mix these instruments but im optomistic about the results.Well, until your last post that is. haha -
Doom II remix WIP in need of opinons.
GarretGraves replied to GarretGraves's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Should I take the strings out in the beginning entirely? Im new to GPO so I dont know how to make them sound more realistic. im told the key is reverb. The snares in the begininng are coming from Superior Drummer and not GPO so that's probably why the snare stands out a ton. I guess I could move the section at 2:19 at an earlier time. My goal was to build up to that part. Stay subtle at the beginning only hinting the source material the show more of it as it goes on then finally a big finish. But if it aint workin it aint workin. I'll give it a go. Thanks! EDIT: Oh and sorry for posting in the wrong forum. I was thread hopping and forgot where i was. Move me, please! -
it's WIP but I think I'm onto something here. It's not finished lengthwise and I have a feeling it could use more color of sorts. It's metal, by the way. Here it is: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9CN740V9 Using Superior Drummer 2.0 and GPO in FL 8 and recording audio in Adobe Audition. I only do this cause i dont know how to record audio in FL. Or if it's even possible. Probably is. I'm just lazy. I put a compressor on nearly everything on the drums except the cymbals. The kicks are what I'm REALLY proud of so far. I've never mixed kicks so well before. Multiband Comp on the master track in Audition. Some reverb using Garritan Ambience. The solo at the end is obviously not final. I just did a take or two and left it for now. Here's where I get seriously picky. I've always had this pet peeve of other rock tracks on ocremix overpowering the rock elements with electronics and such. Or using them at all. I have a string section in the beginning but that's about it. I refrain from using any electronic sounds or techno sounds or whatever not just because i dont have them but because it seems trendy. I know it's a bit narcississtic (sp? lol) of me to state such a thing. But now I'm actually considering using such tactics. It needs color. Period. Thoughts? EDIT: I'm an idiot. Here's the source.
