  1. I'm quite familiar with the SA1 soundtrack but just reviewed the Twinkle Park theme and Sonic's theme again... musically, there's not a lot of variation on the original themes here, few liberties taken with the melody and the chord progression. I really would have liked to see more interpretation of the progression of the Twinkle Park theme, it was getting tiring by the end. however! structurally, this is interesting. The way it goes into Sonic's theme while keeping the feel of the TP theme so seamlessly is very good. take the last couple bars, you hear the a motif from Sonic's theme and then a motif from the main SA theme, nice. mixwise, the only problem I have is the reverby high-passed detuned saws lead, it's too loud! admittedly, most people will not think so because the frequencies in particular that are bothering me are often attenuated on consumer speakers & headphones. But people like me listening to this on expensive reference equipment may complain. i like this mix and i feel it is passable. yes
  2. this mix is quite thin sounding. I do like the lead instrument, I don't know if it's supposed to be a guitar, it's a plucking sound made by use of comb filters*, a synthetic abstraction of a plucked instrument, but not any in particular that I can tell. Sounds like a cross between a harpsicord and a clavinet. anyways, as I said, this is thin sounding and lacking the development department. this track does not go anywhere and that makes it very boring. no *or possibly FM, but it really does sound like basic physical modelling with comb filters.
  3. yay, super punch-out. i certantly do remember this, i think it was the only character theme that didn't have a heavy guitar sound in it, unlike all the other character themes. anyways, this is identical to the original but with an 808 kit and an annoying lead and it even retains the repetitiveness of the original. this won't stay on the panel for very long... sorry tb. no
  4. i'd like to give this a yes just so i can close the thread but, gee, i really think this should be sent back for a resubmit. musically, this is lacking variation on the original themes, the melodies are the same, progressions are the same, and the structure is the same. the only thing different are the drums, for which the sequencing is not impressive. and the weak transitions were already discussed. mixwise, I the balancing needs work, some instruments are jarringly loud (repulsive fake guitar at 1:04, for example) while others are buried. the delay is a bit overused, things sound sorta cluttered. annoying soundeffects already discussed. lower norfair was good though. please resubmit. no edit: oh whoops, this already has enough yes votes. cottmm didn't close the thread after he posted so i thought it was still undecided. nevermind then...
  5. starts off with a nice big filtersweep, then some weird drumwork... distortion, distortion, distortion. aggrgh! why? this must have been mixed on $7 computer speakers. very dry mix, not enjoyable. no
  6. i didn't find anything interesting about the drumwork... but like protricity was saying the big problem here is clutter and balance. the instruments meld in a manner that does not let the main theme stand out to give the mix the coherency it needs. no
  7. mp3.com? i hate you too! the other judges pretty much covered all the things wrong here. shortitude, oververb, etc... no
  8. S|r_NutS (formerly FielDYSnutS) says he doesn't want this mix judged anymore (it's from 7 months ago?), so I'm closing this thread. He's got a track he's been waiting 7 weeks for that I will probably "fall through" for him in a few days. He definately would like to have that track judged. If this is not alright then let me know...
  9. are these 22khz samples? why does this track sound so dry and mechanical... oh well. Good original stuff over the starman theme, nice laid back feel. But this is way too monotonous for a yes. the same 2 chords over and over and over. this needs a bridge section or something to keep it more interesting. this is a step in the right direction, it just needs to go all way. no
  10. hmm, a symphonic band arrangement with no dynamics? no key changes? no tempo changes? no trading the theme around between the various instrument sections? no longer than a minute and 11 seconds? no
  11. i like seinfeld and i love this episode! ... but this remix is horrible! the seinfeld samples are so low quality they hurt my ears and they make up the whole track. and there's not much going on here musically, although I can't hear the music much behind those loud seinfeld quotes. april fools day already passed, so I can't think of any reason why this should go on OCR. no
  12. this would make a great addition to DDR fansites but perhaps it is too short for OCR. I don't think we want to encourage more of these, this is not a DDR site. Resubmit something longer and you'll definately get a yes from me. no
  13. hahahahahahahahahahahaha! that was great! no
  14. sound like imitation-909 samples to me, and oh look he used a korg triton, so that would back up such a theory. but.. i guess it doesn't matter. the lead sounds a bit buried, needs to be brought out more, or eq'd to be brighter. some reverb on those orchestra-hits would make them sound cooler. so short, this song went nowhere fast. anyways, what malcos said.. doesn't stand out in any way. no but fedex me your triton and i'll give you a yes
  15. lots of very nice ambient textures and good quality samples. but i'm quite in agreement with the others... there's not much of an arrangement here. take away those nice samples and ambient textures and it's not much better than the cheesy remixes done in fl that we get. no
  16. wow, X2CD Converter can make game remixes? seriously, this is a good idea, chamber choir synthpop. It just falls short in the implementation. The vocal samples and substractive synthesis sounds don't quite fit together. And some sections sound very thin. ending?! no
  17. well I also competed in imc12 so I'm quite familiar with the source material. There are good variations of the original themes here, the original is less than 50 seconds long, so extending it to any length while keeping it interesting takes some time. And this pulls that off nicely. I'm not liking all of the sounds here, although they're not default patches they just have that FL sound to them, much like how the Nord Lead has a characteristic sound to it. But that's just a personal preference. There is some painful resonance at 1:43.. uurrgghh! nice drum programming at 2:10ish section and good use of filters. Combining both sections of the original together at 3:00ish was very clever... why didn't I think of that? passable. edit: Ok, he fixed the spot at 1:43 so now it does not cause my ears to hurt. so, as promised... yes
  18. nuts has been waiting six weeks, so here it is. i'll give it a vote this weekend. oh yeah, 600th post! hmm! - analoq Well, since I submitted a remix before the beggining of the year and I haven't got any response for it, and since I submitted this some time ago without any results again, I'm contacting analoq to get this in the juding thread. Well, this was a remix I made for IMC12, the Metropolis Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It got good reviews and I think it sounds good too. Though I have better songs than this now. Anyways, I used lots of effects for this, filtering, gating, panning, flange, and.. well I know you'll notice all that (that's why you're judges here). This was made with fruityloops 3.5, 3xosc, tst404 and umm some drum samples, it's fast, as sonic would be, and well I like it a lot, and I hope that you and all the ocr listeners will too. (edit- file updated) If acepted, this should be credited to S|r Nuts. I think I'm not forgetting anything but if I do you can Pm me or send me an e-mail.
  19. no! don't ever cross encode or advocate it unless it's absolutely necessary (such as cross-encoding for use on an iPod) ... you get all the artifacts of the ogg plus artifacts introduced by mp3 compression. Play the ogg, you can do it! Winamp - Versions 2.80 and higher (3 included) play Ogg Vorbis files providing you download the Standard or Full installer. The Lite versions of Winamp do not include the Ogg plug-in. Windows Media Player - There is a DirectShow filter that will enable you to play Ogg Vorbis files with Windows Media Player HERE. Quicktime - A working QuickTime component for Ogg Vorbis is available HERE. Works on PCs and on Macs. oh yeah, and good job vigilante! sorry for the rant. cheers.
  20. well i still hear offkey notes around 1:39 lest my ears deceive me. but it seems to have enough yes votes anyways.
  21. hey I couldn't find the rar file on the judges web... so i downloaded it of dj shade's website. hopefully they are the same. anywas... cluttered, mechanical sequencing and lofi samples galore. few liberties taken with the original in regards to arrangement. this sounds like the guy was using a tracker. if this is the case, then the goal is to make it sound like you're not using a tracker. if not, then i guess i'm mislead by the lifelessness of this mix. no
  22. protricity is sorta right, this is carried by the nice samples... i like the flange effect though. but it's really the same thing over and over again, the variation is mostly with the instrumentation and dynamics, no real interpretaion of the original melody or chord progression. and it's a little short. But it is very nice... I think it would benefit from a resubmit but I'm not entirely opposed to it being posted either. *shrug* no
  23. well the link isn't working for me right now... but i know suzu so i'll get it direct from him later today and edit this post. EDIT: arrgghh he says he doesn't have it anymore. can someone please upload it to the judges webspace or something?
  24. in addition to being at 96kbps, it's also at 32khz... that's just unacceptable. Offkey notes at 1:45 ... and 2:10 ... and everytime the theme repeats ... arrgghh! that too is just unacceptable. no
  25. This sounds like a 4kb MIDI file played through $6 computer speakers... despite the fact that it's a 160kbps MP3 being played through $600 nearfield monitors. I'm in agreement with Beatdrop, the mix kills it. Also the arrangement is nothing special, but really, this sounds patently ametuerish. no
