  1. started out promising. then it didn't go very far. no bass. some clipping here near the end. 2:52 shows how using a choir patch with slow attacks and releases for a quickly moving part doesn't work. doesn't seem like there was a lot of thought put into the instrumentation, like he just imported whatever soundfonts he had that sorta kinda worked. i like the delayed square lead though. but this still needs more attention from the composer, whose name is identical to my own if you only look at the first 9 letters. no
  2. the percussion sounds lofi with weird stuff going on in the higher frequencies, but that's probably due to the 112kbps encoding. the hard panning is ehhhhh. this lacks development.. doesn't build any tension, doesn't set an interesting atmosphere, the parts just come and go and i'm not really caring. ending: weird. no
  3. this is the original with new (but nicely varied) drum work and some weird pads. it's not just DiscoDan's soundcard; this there is some weird stuff going on in the low end.. the cutoff on the bass pad goes down but the res stays up resulting in a muddy overdriven sound. not a lot going on with this one... no
  4. i'd like to hear this without the pitch shift on the vocals.. because it sounds like it would be cool without it. as it is, the pitch shift makes the vocals completely unintelligible and annoying, especially with the weird artifacts introduced by the pitch shifting, or perhaps the original recording just wasn't ideal. i'm not sure. however i'm guessing the purpose of the shifting is because it's supposed to sound like a lemming is singing? maybe you could find some software to instead of changing the pitch of the vocals, change the chromatic formants slightly, which would still give it a unnaturally high voice sound, while maintaining the character of the vocalist. everything else was pretty cool, i like the piano part and the strings, percussion is fine. the bass could be more potent, try boosting the low end around 75hz or so a bit? post a version without the pitch shift.
  5. mm.. good sounds, was this done in reason? sounds like subtractor to me. decent amount of variation on the original, this is put together well. the layers of effects have been applied in an effective manner, not too much or too little. 4:00ish sounds pretty thin, a more sudden break would've worked better i think, but it picks up well enough. gets a little uninteresting towards the end, nothing really different comes up. ends how it begins, yeah that works alright. good enough in my book. yes
  6. this is completely "general midi file" sounding. too much reverb. is that supposed to be a ride cymbal? it's high frequency sound is uncomfortable to my ears. the only thing i like about this mix is that crazyfast piano sequencing. while the interpretation is pretty good it just doesn't deliver; this is quite boring and doesn't seem to go anywhere. no
  7. hmm, this sounds like it was tracked. which would also easily explain the tight quantization. anyways... this might work well for a low-cost production 80s anime. get what i'm saying? this sounds pretty cheap. instead of being redundant i will just refer you vigilante's post.. he summed up the bulk of my thoughts. no
  8. great subtractor patches. some nice tight and edgy sounds here. nice crunchy distortion on the guitar. but i have to agree with the others, why is the lead buried in the first half? it needs to be louder and/or you need to make a patch that cuts through more. musically this is a bit lacking in the development department. you may be able to get away with what you have here if you did more with the sounds. you know, like assign an lfo to modulate the env amount for the bass during sections and such. add remove layers of effects as the track progresses. and maybe take out some repeats, nearly 5 minutes is too long for what this track has to offer. close but not quite, resubmit. no
  9. all the problems were already pointed out, the only thing i would add is the piano parts sound rather unnatural, i'm guessing this was not sequenced by someone who plays piano often. anyways, try adding some key changes, ritardandos, dynamic changes, something to make this less bland. there's so much you can do in this style... no
  10. suzu says this is an alternate download link if you're having problems with the ftp: (RIGHT CLICK SAVE AS KTHX)
  11. i have some doubts about this mix, it's nice but it doesn't feel like a complete thought. after listening to the original, it's apparent very few liberties have been taken with the source material. sure, there's an improv solo which is very nice also, but it doesn't quite redeem the track. this is in the right direction but it needs to offer the listener more. no
  12. i was at a local jazz club a week ago so you know i'm into it, and this is no exception. GREAT performance! you guys are fantastic musicians. cheers.
  13. i remember that IMC popcorn, that's where my "wanta phanta" came from. in addition for being a dufus and remixing the wrong song, you got the limitations wrong too. there was a 2 megabyte limit for the filesize, not a 2 minute limit for the length. my submission was over 2 minutes. anyways, vigilante summed up the problems with this: guitars sound muddy, too short. i would also like to complain about the balance of the mix though, all the parts are loud and sorta steping over each other, i think you pushed the volume up too hot... it's not distorting yet but i can hear the the limiter working. i found that 24 hours was not enough time to come up with something ocr-quality, i had to work on my mix a bit afterwards before i felt confident submitting it. no
  14. OMF2097, that was a great game. i'd like to see more remixes of old PC games. seems like only consoles get love 'round here. anyways, this remix has terribly dry sounds, balance that leaves to be desired, and there's a bit of clipping. the arrangement and interpretation of the theme is a step in the right direction but it needs to be developed more. by the way, the OMF suondtrack is here. I think it's Arena2. no
  15. this is probably the most abstract ReMix i've ever heard. one needs a sonic magnifying glass to find the warped fragments of the original in this. the dynamics and sounds are very good, but i really can't see something that makes such little use of the original material on OCR. i'm very sorry timberwolf, an avant garde artist such as yourself may never be understood in your own time because of shallow minded conformists such as myself. no
  16. i like hip-hop. don't let anyone tell you otherwise. but this is pretty bad. the beat is not phat enough. the vocals are lo-fi and do not cut through. no overdubs?! and why does this go on for 5 minutes? no
  17. i just wanted to leave a tip to the Coop: please program more detectable velocity changes on piano parts in the future. the piano part in this track sounds very mechanical and lifeless. better piano samples would help too. that's my only gripe. this sounds very GM-ish.
  18. this is really an annoying mix. it's lacking good balance, some instruments are jarringly loud. it's been a while since i've played DN3D but i remember this tune and this mix doesn't add much to it aside from annoying percussive sounds. very little development here. no edit: btw, i apparently used up all this guy's geocities bandwidth so if you can't download it drop me or beatdrop (just sent it to him) an IM or something.
  19. boring, repetitive, suspiciously similiar to the original, no arrangement quality whatsoever. this will not stay on the panel for long. no
  20. after reviewing the original, i would have to suggest submitting this to vgmusic.com instead. this site is for arrangements. no
  21. yeah, this is a poor attempt at orchestral style. some ok percussion. but all the instruments are playing rhythmically and often harmonically in unison while the string bass just holds roots ... you can do so much more than this given the style! the samples are a roland jv/xv i think. man i hate roland synths. no
  22. well cotmm was on the dot with his review, the loud drums overbearing strange fragments of a melody... it just doesn't work. it would take an amount of effort to make this track more boring than it already is. overall this does not sound like a complete thought, it needs to build more and do more. right now it sounds like you left a few tracks muted when you bounced it. no
  23. incredibly dry sounding. too short. no development outside of annoying percussion breaks. no ending. i'd like to say there are some off-key notes but since that's not politically correct i'll say there are some... "artistic" notes in this track. (: no
  24. as promised, here's a mix from S|r Nuts. he's been waiting 8 weeks. the FTP does work, has good bandwidth, but is kinda laggy. Ok, here's the info regarding my submission: This is a mix I made for one of the imc's. Got second place, lotsa people liked and, I love it, and it's one of the best mixes I've made IMHO. That's why I wanted to submit it, I think it has a chance. The original theme is the xiaoyu song from tekken tag 2. I don't know where you can find the source because all that was provided in that contest was the mp3 (I think). This mix has some rithyms that gives a house feel, but with trance patterns and synths. As always, made with fruity 3, fruity generators(no defaults, I dunno why some judges thought they were defaults in my last submission) such as 3xosc( I just love it =p), tst404, and maybe some other vsti's, along with some samples for the beat. Maybe it wasn't noticeable for some people, but maybe you'll notice that a lot of programming went into this(well maybe not as much as in my sonic mix, but there's a lot of programming in here) and lots of changes in the original melody. I hope that you, and ocr listeners enjoy this. get it at: or, if link doesn't works, go to and look for it. thanks for your time, and keep up the good work.
  25. well, the other judges summed up the problems already. this is pretty dull in the development department, instruments aren't very interesting and it is quite repititious. no
