  1. Mario 64 actually had a really good framerate, so despite the graphical issues it probably will stay great til the end of videogames (aka the END OF TIME). I have to agree that games that rely on 3d graphics WILL age far worse than games that rely on 2d graphics, simply because while 3d games continue to progress and get better with time, 2d games were pretty much perfected graphics-wise in 1996 (yeah, later systems got a little better, but really - they haven't gotten too much better since Playstation). Thus, the classics of the past really don't look any worse than the newer 2d games. Also, old gameplay generally will not age well, but they remain fun for those that grew up with them.
  2. It's not bad information, though. It's also geared towards a unified sounding track, so it also would help the medleys get accepted on OCR, too (OCR just doesn't want a stream of songs slapped together as one track, to my understanding).
  3. Cripes, the date was extended?! I was workin' towards the May 20th deadline, too... Guess it's time to throw it back in the 'Procrastinate until the final possible moment' closet. nah, I'll try to get an update in a few days, don't worry.
  4. Don't worry - you've got you're daily neighborhood music theorist, to do the work for you! Alrighty, instead of analyzing every single change, let's say that every quick chord change is a simple neighbor tone combination (for example, 0:06-0:08 would have a lower neighbor, not actually have a chord change). I-bVII7-bVI-I <-- The flat chords use a technique called 'Primary Mixture', meaning they take chords from the parallel minor and use them. It's a cool technique. I-bVII7-bVI-V64-53 I-bVII-bVI-I-V-I-bIII-V-I I-bVII-bVI-I-bIII-V-I i-VI-iv-V <-- Oh, he modulated to minor, for a sweet little section, there. Tasty. i-VI-iv-V I-bVII7-bVII-I (-bVii7-bVII-V64-53 I-bVII-VI-V64-53 I-bIII-V-I I-bVII-VI-V64-53 I-bIII-V-I i-VI-iv-V i-VI-iv-V I-VII7-bVII-I I-bVII7-VII-I I-bVII-bVI-V64-53 I-bIII-V-I I-i-I-i...-V-I I think that's the basics of it... Personally I'd reduce a whole lot of that to neighboring motions, but a lot of people don't like it when I do that . Personally, this is one of the most interesting mixes on ORC that I've seen, and I had a bunch of fun mixing it. Also, I think you have an affinity with Mixture, J64H.
  5. No problem - I'll vote too and give some comments. I had the whole damn thing analyzed, Hewhoisiam, but the damn system ate my message. I might do it again in a bit for you .
  6. *hand flies toward the Submit button* Holy crap, that was a fast song, there. Sorry for the brevity, but I was under quite a time constraint. At least it isn't a single song compo, this time 'round! I hate single song compos . J64H is a cool guy so I wouldn't want him to get stuck with one of those. Alrighty, have fun voting, folks!
  7. The dance pad is not the most useless peripheral in gaming history...
  8. Hey Author, here's something I dredged up from the old forum - tell me that this isn't prophetic... We actually did make a 1 source song tribute album. We did make it 10 tracks long. I think this ended up being one of the best responses to a Youtube comment ever. If this became official (that's still quite questionable, for sure) then frankly nearly everything in there would've come true. The title wasn't quite accurate, but I'd say that was quite a prophetic statement there nonetheless, Author. That is called a new addition to the album, dammit - why did the guy get so much flak for making it in an unconventional style (Alright, the clipping was annoying, but really - the arrangement is quite awesome)? Cripes, Youtube can be narrow minded, at times... 'course, that goes without saying, I guess...
  9. Dear God, how did I miss this? I've been scouring the WIP forums for a Hard Corp remix, and here it is AND I MISSED IT! I would give constructive criticism, but it seems to already have been touched on by Txai so I'll simply say I'm waiting for an update, man. Sounds very promising, though, please keep at it!
  10. There's at least one out there that I'm quite satisfied with (it's mixed in with Mega Man music)... it came from here. And yeah, I'd love to do some Silver Surfer someday, too - it's the most epic chiptunage around. When I stop project whoring myself out I will get back to my dream .
  11. Don't worry, it's taken care of. And yeah, it's pretty long, otherwise it wouldn't be a problem, lol (it really is neat, though - don't let Rozo's niegh-saying get to you, too...). And the wave is 220mbs, by the way, and a hair over 20 minutes. Just sent them the 192 kbps version, and they're happy with it, so it's a non-issue, now. Thanks for the help, though.
  12. Mmm... I figure it's easier to use the time-stopper on Quickman rather than waste it on the lasers. That guy is a bitch, for sure, but he's weak against Flashman (instantly takes half his life). Who'd have thought?
  13. Glad this one made it through - one of my favorites on the WIP forums... Yeah, the guitars sound a little too far back in the mix, but otherwise it's just sexy music, man. For some reason, although I can hear what Will is saying I personally find the drums strangely fitting... Waitin' for more from ya! Oh, and for those that haven't played the game... just play the damn thing - it's seriously one of the best games on the Sega.
  14. Mmm... short and sweet, alright. I like the light sound of it, personally. It's quite repetitive, but I'm assuming that the source is very short, so that may just be the nature of the beast, unfortunately. Doesn't make it any less pretty, though.
  15. Alright, my drum comment was made with a lazy ear, lol. Sorry about that - it's the beat that's throwing my ear and getting repetitive, not the drums themselves. You could probably get away with it, but I would personally change the beat up, periodically. Laaaazy ears in the mornin', for me, and I'm terrible at wording things, from time to time. Sorry 'bout the misunderstanding. I'll stick to my guns about the conservative nature of the track, though. Listening to the track, you stick far too closely to the harmonic/structural elements of the source, there, and when the source is playing note-for-note it really is playing 'note-for-note', if you catch my drift. 1/6th of the track playing an original melody over the source's structure & harmonies isn't enough, there. The instrumentation is a fairly decent problem, enough alone to hold back the track, imho. It exhausts the ears to the point where it all sounds the same by the time you get to the end (even when it indeed is not). That's just the way the human mind works, when it comes to listening to music, unfortunately, so you really do need some more variation in the instrumentation, there. Hopefully that's a little clearer - it's understandable to get defensive about criticism that's completely wrong, like my drum comment
  16. I've had this on loop for the past 30 minutes without noticing... That's a good thing. Unfortunately, I can also assure you that this won't make it on OCR, as is, for a couple of significant reasons... 1.) Far too consevative - this is almost identical to the source, melodically, harmonically and structurally. The only thing that's been changed are the instruments, which while nice, isn't enough to be considered viable for OCR. 2.) The instrumentation is limited to some basic instruments (saw, square and some pads & drums). It could work with just those instruments, but the track uses the same instruments for the same things throughout the track, which gets tiring on the ears quickly. 3.) The drums have no variation, at all. They could be removed entirely and not even be noticed, really - add some flavor to the drums, different beats, fills and whatnot; that could really add the spice to the track that it needs. Production is tight, so good job on that. It's not a bad track by any stretch of the imagination (I wouldn't have looped it for a half hour if it was), but at the same time I can assure you that this won't make it if you submit it, and the primary reasons aren't something that you can simply 'tweak' and call it done, either (well, other than the drum comment). It would pretty much take a rewrite to get it to OCR's requirements. If you're up to that I can't wait to hear it - this IS one of the best sources out there .
  17. Don't worry - if someone doesn't like the new name then you can now slap them harmlessly with Cave Story instead of hitting them with hookers. It's just... less painful that way.

I like the name, so you don't need to slap me with Cave stoty, at least.

  18. I listened to it on another sound system, and it's safe to say that it isn't over-compression, really. The soundscape is a touch mushy, but it isn't necessarily over-compression. It's probably just a mixing issue, so get some of the melodies to the front and it'll be alright .
  19. ... No no, don't take it that way - I meant the track that you made really hearkened back to your older work (in a good way). I haven't listened to it on a proper system yet, so I'll go do that and see if there's any over-compression, if that'll help. There are some sounds that are mushing together a bit strangely, atm, but it very well could be the headphones I'm using. And yes, I'm looking forward to a remake of that soundtrack .
  20. Curly Brace is... Slut?

I never got that impression in the game :P. Weird to see a foreign name pop up in your 'friends' box, like that, so I needed to check it out, lol.

  21. PAAARRRAAAAALLLLLEEEEEELLLL FIIIIFFF... no, I won't go there. I'll just say either take the polyphony out of the pad, or change the pad entirely. It'll clean the track a little and make the overall soundscape sound a little bit better. The synth combination is a little bit odd, tbh. Strange isn't bad, if you can make it work, but this isn't a case where I think it works. Try getting a more consistent sound first (techno texture + pads work for that, although the pad itself isn't a good choice, like I mentioned before), then add some of the oddities in there (Mmm... chiptunes; tasty, tasty chiptunes) and see if you can get a better synthesis out of it, if you want to stick with what you got. The soundscape is a little too full too often. Clear out the instruments periodically and give the ear some room to breath. It can be a nice sound to introduce everything at once, but taking things out keeps the flavor fresh for the full sections, so don't be afraid to take instruments out, periodically. I think the source is there, sort of at the end there, but it's a little sparse, for me... I'd need to go back to the source (which you kindly provided, thank you ) and compare them to make sure, but I think it may be a touch on the liberal side, there, for OCR. The production is a little on the loud side (which is causing a little clipping), but rather than complicated mixing just turning down the compressor a couple of decibels would fix all that right up and match it to the volume of other tracks on this site, so it's not a difficult fix. The mix really hides the thematic elements and pushes them into the background heavily. Mix them into the front a little bit more - that might actually help people hear the source, there. Not bad for a first post here. I think it could turn out quite nice, but for now it's not clicking for me, quite yet. Keep working on it, and don't be discouraged. Oh yeah, Welcome to OCR .
  22. Yeah, absolutely nothing wrong with a cover track. Covers can be great, in their own way but people are naturally going to assume that you're submitting to the site, so you'll probably get some flack for that by at least one or two members if you don't give the heads up. Don't worry about it, just know where they're coming from - covers are nice, but they'll never get on the site. If that's not your goal then you know... don't worry about it. Just take notes in case you want to write something for here, sometime . EDIT: Not fair to come into a thread without listening tot he track & commenting, so here are my thoughts... RAWR, NOT A REMIX, LAWL... j/k, we know it's a cover Personally, I feel there's too much emphasis on harmonics in the track - I was expecting it to really open up and get 'heavy' after the harmonics laid the framework, but it never left the harmonics . They're really great for an effect, but if they're used for too long then they tend to hurt the ears a little (I mean this literally, because of the high frequencies). The drums are mediocre - I can tell that they are a simple repeated pattern from a drum machine (especially that pattern repeating at 1:22 - ouch...). The militaristic 'march' pattern you have could work, but you really, REALLY need to adjust the velocities on the snare in order to make it sound realistic. Cover or not, please do more with the drums. Otherwise, it's not bad at all (as a cover, of course )
  23. Yeah, my ears are hurting from the tuning of the piano, but that's more because that reminds me all too much of what my piano sounds like, atm. The arrangement is close enough to the source, IMHO, but Rozo's right in that you could expand on the rest of the source a bit. It feels like there's too much pedal going on in the music, there. Try to lighten it up a little, 'cause the bottom end bleeds into the rest of the music quite a bit. Perhaps double the releases that you're doing. Other than what people have already said, I like it. Much love to Cave Story
  24. Almost forgot this one - Laguna's theme from FF8. Don't believe me? The WIP forum was flooded with Laguna remixes, for a time. Here's proof... Yeah, 5 mixes, at a time, there. And for anyone that doesn't know, March is now dedicated to Laguna.
  25. 'Bout finished... Mmm, it's a long, sexy track. Great to see that this project is almost finished - we sure showed Youtube who's boss! Hey... is anyone else using Reason on this project? I need to get something akin to a final wav up there, but the final wav is... *looks around sheepishly* over 200mbs. I have a limited amount of monthly bandwith on my internet, so I can't upload something that large, but I can send the rsn file without a problem (it's *only* 5 mbs) so someone with Reason could extract the file and do whatever they needed to do to it. Alternatively I could send a relatively small compression (256kbs, or something like that) and call it 'final'...
