  1. Yeah, sorry 'bout that. I couldn't go into too many details in the e-mail, but ages ago (during the FF6 album kickstarter and release) Squaresoft got a bit touchy with their property - kickstarter money for a physical print is what did it - and they basically took a hard look at the site and all of the property it was playing around with. Got off pretty easy with just the samples being legally banned (still got the kickstarter done for a physical print, too!), but those were some pretty tricky times. It's why in the submission instructions we say no Squaresoft samples, and we do our best to respect that. Every other company is all good, though, as long as samples aren't the only way people can recognize the source. Figured a bit of interesting history to go with my rejection would be neat, since that incident is so old now a lot of newer members aren't even aware of it.
  2. Well, this is certainly a really cool interpretation. What can I say, the analog synths just sound so warm and tasty, it's hard not to just love it. Nice stuff, and welcome to the OCR boards. If you'd like some more personal interaction with our members we also have a live Discord server, too. Definitely check it out! ... I'm not personally on those servers much, but hey - I hear they're pretty dope.
  3. Hi! Attached is my arrangement of Dearly Beloved. Here's a DB link to the track just in case: Contact Information: - ReMixer name - TuneInWithChewie - Nestor Estrada - - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZp_9UatrDG7qRPs84KVu3g?view_as=subscriber or main website: www.nestorestrada.com/youtube - userid 35202 Submission Information: - Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2) - Dear Serenity - Dearly Beloved - Composed by Yoko Shimomura. I've always been a huge fan of Yoko Shimomura's work on the Kingdom Hearts series (and more). It took me a while to figure out the direction I wanted to take with this one. I bought some new modules for my eurorack recently and while experimenting an idea began to take shape. That idea became the foundation for this track. Everything else fell into place right after. I reached out to a friend to perform the oboe part I had written down and everything else was performed by me using analog gear, guitar, bass, and virtual software (some of which I sound designed myself and programmed to be playable through Kontakt). 4. I'll be honest, I personally think this is a pretty great little track. I do like how the performance shapes the phrases (with the dynamics, articulations and dynamic tempo), and frankly this does sound like a pretty tough piece to perform. That third section in particular has a lot of things going on under the hood, which is why the performance of it is less than perfect, I'm sure. I can predict a couple of other issues that others might have with something like this (the 1:38 minute track length, the repeated iteration used to expand each section), but I'm less convinced on rejecting this outright on those grounds. The site, while rare, has posted sub-2 minute tracks in the past, and the alternative to that repetition (e.g. altering the second iteration to make it stand out more) could, in my humblest opinion, cause the track to be sound unbalanced, though a minor alteration to the second iteration of each section to make it sound like an antecedent/consequent arrangement could help make the track sound less repetitious. Could be my piano bias, hearing similarities to other piano pieces like this in the past (like Chopin's "Aeolian Harp", for example), but I don't think the arrangement is at all far from passable. Despite my defense of other aspects of this track, the performance does need to be in tip-top shape to be posted. I don't think I could justify posting a track in this unpolished state, but I do think a polished version of this would deserve a solid look. So clean up the preformance, and perhaps give some thought on tastefully altering the direct repetitions so it doesn't sound like padding, and I could see this passing. NO

It’s creates all the feelings that a good boss theme should - anxiety, suspense, gets you pumped up — but it does in it’s own way by using the snare drum pattern to creates rhythmic dissonance, using mixed meter, a brilliantly placed rest making you feel uneasy, and a great chord progression. I took these elements and developed them into four different sections — an intro, the build up, the release, and an outro. Thank you for listening!

So when there was a free Undertale slot on the Indie Games v2 tribute album, over at the Pixel Mixers community, it felt like too good an opportunity to pass up. Hopes and Dreams is one of my favorite tracks from Undertale for its upbeat and optimistic vibe and just plain catchy melody. Since I’ve been looking for an excuse to try my hand at a Nightwish-esque, that meant operatic female vocals. Fortunately one-woman choir Psamathes, a Pixel Mixers regular, was immediately interested to do some symphonic metal, so I got to arranging. As far as the arrangement goes, the source track is catchy but also quite repetitive, so I had to be creative. Fortunately there was enough material create a verse and chorus section as well as a bridge part. To spice it up, I wrote a riff + chant section quite heavily inspired by a part of the source (even though I completely forgot from where by now...), added a solo section and threw in some (intentionally keyboardy/ROMpler-ey sounding) orchestral sounds for that symphonic feel. No symphonic metal without guitars, and while I liked my Shreddage 2 midi riffs well enough to blend them in too, I was happy to work with jmabate for some great guitar work. He provided the lead and rhythm guitars and threw in an extra tasty solo bit as well as a few harmonies at the end to boot. Bass was provided by Kalu4ii Plays, another PM community member, and provides the rhythm section together with the pretty layered drums courtesy of Logic Pro’s Drummer (and heavily edited by yours truly). After the usual mixing hell (it turned out to be one of these high track count monsters with too many layers) it turned out not quite as Nightwish-esque as I originally planned, but I still feel it’s a great homage to Undertale, to symphonic rock/metal in general and it has plenty of good vibes and power. All of this was immensely helped by the fantastic singing from Psamathes and the extra oomph provided by the performances from jmabate and Kalu4ii, and I can't thank them enough for helping the track come to life! Psamathes: When Jorito asked me to sing on this track, I was very easily convinced: he just had to say "Undertale" and "Nightwish" in the same sentence. We eventually incorporated the symphonic metal influences in a more personal way, in order to fit our styles and musical identities, but the bombastic feeling stayed, and it really gave the song a special energy. Undertale is a game that got me through some very difficult times, and I loved how the original lyrics Jorito wrote somehow reflected the struggles I was going through back then. As a singer, I absolutely had to put all my heart in the interpretation, and I worked towards that both with enunciation and by using different voice colors. I was able to add a lot of nuances by experimenting with different operatic techniques, from the fuller, "determined" tones of the chorus to the lighter notes of the bridge, which immediately convey the insecurity expressed by the lyrics. I also sang all the harmonies in the choir section, and for those I had to make sure that I was consistent and varied at the same time. Technically speaking, this song was really challenging. The main melody of Hopes and Dreams is full of big jumps that take a huge amount of control to be sung with a consistent tone, and the upbeat tempo also required an almost surgical use of breathing to safely make it through the phrases. After that, it was all a matter of being one with the music! jmabate: When Jorito asked for guitars on the Pixel Mixers Discord, I really liked the music and it inspired me a lot! When the guitars were recorded and I heard the finished track, I really enjoyed the mood of the arrangement and the voice of Psamathes! 8. EVAL Oh, this sounds pretty kickin'. Production is clean, and the track sounds pretty kickin' to boot; almost sounds like it could've been in Persona 5, which believe me is a compliment (great freakin' soundtrack). Would've loved a source link, though; looking for an arrangement online on our own isn't too fun. I'm not sure how the arrangement connects with the source that I found, either - could be the case that I found the wrong source to compare to. A suggestion if you submit this: if you are confident that the source is certainly represented in the track (at least 50% of your arrangement being identifiable as the source, at least), provide some timestamps in your submission e-mail. Minor criticism: on your faster instruments the reverb creates high frequency mud, which sounds like an unnecessary hiss throughout those faster parts. It's not something that'd sink the track on the panel, but it's something you could try to avoid in future arrangements by using less reverb on your more nimble instruments. Aside from that, I think you should submit it, as long as you can provide the source in the e-mail as well as the timestamps I suggested above. Looking forward to seeing it on the panel.

Brief comments: My friend (deepeejr) and I grew up loving this game, and we were shocked to find out how few covers/remixes there were to this game's amazing soundtrack. We each recorded different parts of the lead and rhythm guitars. The drums and bass are MIDI, as well as a few synth instruments in the Introduction and Briefing (Stage Select) portions of the song. Also we sprinkled in a few sound effects sampled from the game which felt appropriate. The cowbell in the middle was a non-negotiable addition to the arrangement. My aim in this song was to more-or-less mix it as an organic-sounding rock tune as played by a 4/5 piece band. I took a hands-off approach with plugins and processing of the guitars. The drums have a fair amount of parallel compression and (perhaps excessive at times) reverb, but I wanted them to be featured prominently. The overall mix tends to be bass-heavy, since the bass is such a key and prominent part of the original tunes from the game – for example, in the Store theme. The bass sound itself hearkens back to a more "faux" sounding instrument, reminiscent of the bass sound used in the original soundtrack - which I felt actually sat better in the final mix, more-so than a more natural electric bass sound, given some of the bouncy/zany basslines the original soundtrack brought to the table. Overall it was a really fun piece to work on, and for my first submission to this site I hope it is up to the high standards that so many other arrangements have set. Looking forward to any thoughts/criticism you may have. Thanks!

It's a sort of spiritual sequel to my previous remix "Anathema, Quietus & Apotheosis". Due to time constraints of the project and personal life, I had to approach this remix differently - after envisioning the concept, I laid out the the rhythm and harmony (mostly just drums, bass and a few orchestral elements) of the whole song beforehand and, without making any changes to it, built everything else on top, mixing coming last. During the process, I was afraid of it being an endeavor too ambitious, but it turned out alright (although with more time I would have considered more complex harmony) and produced results before the project deadline. The song was mostly and probably most obviously inspired by Hellfire from FFXV, which made me inclined to spend hours tweaking EQs and compressors to achieve the epic drum banging, among other things. Another influence, to a lesser extent, was Demetori - 星条旗のピエロ ~ The MadPiero Laughs, mostly for guitar writing/technique. Thank you for your time.

  13. Dear OCRemix Panel, Please find attached an MP3 file of my arrangement/cover of the theme for ‘Garoh' from Golden Sun: The Lost Age for your kind review. (I have also included a link to an online version in case the attached one doesn’t work.) The piece includes about a minute of original composition; the rest comes solely from ‘Garoh’. I title my arrangement “Under a Full Moon”. It is an orchestral arrangement with a trio of real flutes. The information required is given below. Many thanks for your attention! Very best regards, George Personal information: ReMixer name: satoka-eldon Real name: George Goodwin Email address: Website: http://eldonreeves.com UserID: 34976 Link to original track: http://ocremix.org/song/4299/garoh Link to my arrangement: Some comments: I transcribed and arranged this track more than 10 years ago using a very primitive version of Sibelius, along with a bunch of other music from the first two Golden Sun games. It was much, much later that I realized other musicians were uploading upgraded and arranged versions of pieces to the Internet, and only now that I’ve gotten round to following suit. (Better late than never!) The melody to the original theme to the town of Garoh (home of the werewolves of Weyard), is played by a flute. It has a wonderfully melancholy feel to it. I took the original theme and arranged it for an orchestra, and played three flute parts over it, really trying to capture that melancholy feel. The original track doesn’t include any percussion, so I used rubato throughout the piece to try to make it feel more personal. I also added a minute’s worth of original material (from 0:32 to 1:37) given the brevity of the original piece. The first half of the addition includes a brief modulation into E minor, and includes several chromatic runs in the melody. The second part follows part of the chord progression of the original, foreshadowing the final climax of the piece. The final section from 2:10 was modified from the original alternating F-G chords to include a rising bass-line, to try to enhance the climax. I got a lot of feedback on my arrangements over the last few months from a lot of different people, and have learnt a lot about producing music using a DAW. Thanks goes in particular to the musicians at the Golden Sun Reddit and at the OCRemix forums~

I want to thank the judges profusely for asking me to resubmit – I can’t describe in words how much I appreciate the opportunity. Many, many hours have gone into this final version. I hope I have made you proud with the newly-polished production of my take on this awesome classic tune! Comments from original submission: I fell in love with the haunting melody the first time I heard it (which, oddly enough, wasn’t from the original soundtrack, but from a fan-made game that featured a remix of it). I didn’t really intend on remixing it to the extent that I did; I was originally planning to make a grand orchestral cover. However, I one day stumbled upon the anime No Game No Life and became absolutely infatuated with the opening theme, “This Game”. It’s a very upbeat tune with rapid pianos, bass-licks, drums and guitars, and I probably spent a day or two deconstructing it because it was so dense with crazy counter-melodies, polyrhythms and key modulations. I knew I had to make something in that same vein, and while working on creating my orchestral version of Rainbow Resort, the idea struck me: a bait-and-switch intro leading into an upbeat, frantic and super-catchy arrangement of the timeless Kirby track. I ran into a couple walls in the development process (and probably pounded my head against a couple real life walls), but focusing on finishing is what kept the fresh ideas coming. I’ve never worked harder on any composition in my entire life, and I’m genuinely pleased with how it turned out. I honestly couldn’t genre-ize this piece if you asked me to. Perhaps it’s some sort of hybrid between rock/metal and soundtrack music. I hope you’ll find this rather unorthodox arrangement of a classic 8-bit Kirby tune as endearing as I intended.

  16. EVAL Oh, we've got some Undertale going down on here - great soundtrack. You do some fine work with the live guitar work, and it's pretty solidly produced, as well. Since this has the EVAL tag, though, I've got to say how it'd fair on the panel, and to that I'd have to say it'd likely be greatly enjoyed, and then quickly rejected because it's a really close cover of the source, with similar/identical instruments to the source to boot. The final section that plays Undertale is very jarring, as well, being a completely different in instrumentation and style; it's basically two different songs side-by-side. So while it's a fun cover, I'd suggest not submitting it to OCR at this stage as it's indeed a cover, which OCR would not accept. Great stuff, though - glad you shared it with the WIP forums.
  17. EVAL Well, this is some really great stuff. I can't say too much about this; it's some quality metal that'd likely pass in the panel (if it weren't directly posted on the site). It's a pretty straight arrangement, but there's a lot of machinery going on in the background that help it stand out, as well as some sweeping solos. We need some Megalovania on OCR, so here's hoping you send it our way. I wish I could give more productive advice on this, but you really did sweep this one out of the water. Hope to see it on the panel soon!
  18. To be honest, the strings bug me much less than the guitar does; they sound fake, but to be honest they sound SO fake that there's really no uncanny valley - they're just another electronic pad that carries the theme. At best, my complaint is that they're a vanilla instrument that's a little too similar to the pads, but that's getting into personal preference territory. They're not great, but they're passable - I give them a pass. The electric guitar is a far more guilty culprit of being too low quality and uncanny valley. It would be better to use something that either is more realistic/live, or something that doesn't try to be a guitar in the first place (a saw/supersaw with guitar-like bends fattened with delay/reverb, for example). There are long stretches of the arrangement that doesn't have that guitar where it's ranges from decent to great, but where the arrangement has that guitar it's just so jarring how much that instrument doesn't belong in this. Oddly enough, it's not so bad as a background instrument at 3:51, but otherwise it's just not the right instrument for the center stage. The arrangement is cool and dynamic, but if I'm going to be honest the instrument quality of that guitar does sink it for me, and it's front-and-center for a significant portion of the track. I've been called out for being too harsh on singular elements before, so I could be persuaded otherwise if anyone feels this is too harsh, but for now I think it's a big enough issue to send this back to the artist for a fix. NO

  21. Gotta say, this is an interesting approach. Glad this isn't an instrumental, since those vocals really do have a lot of character. I'm surprised how (relatively) in tune you keep your vocals at those deep tones. It's not perfect, but considering you're going for a rough, snarling sound I would say it's passable. Not for everyone, but I like em'. The backing instruments, though, are a non-starter. They're not at all humanized, with the strings and brass being particularly mechanical. It doesn't help that the brass has a long solo at 1:55, which magnifies just how mecanical it is. The levels all remain the same, the attacks and releases of all of the notes are the same, which just makes it sound like a computer is hitting all of the notes the same way all the time (which it is, but the trick is to make it not sound like that). The arrangement is pretty good, but the mechanical backing instruements send this below the bar. If some time is spent making the backing orchestral elements sound more realistic this would have a chance on the panel (granting that others consider the vocals passable, which is in the air), but right now this is a hard pass. NO

  23. Yeah, Nutritious' is on point on this one; the arrangement overlays the source track. Though quiet, the backing track is there throughout. It's kind of cool that the artist actually (allegedly) got permission from the original composer to do this, but as per OCR's standards this isn't considered substantial enough to be considered an arrangement: The track, while pretty neat unto itself, is in essence taking the original game audio and adding items on top of it (standard specifies drums, but this applies to other instruments too), which violates this standard. I should've caught it in the inbox, but no biggie. NO, OVERRIDE
