Okay, there's one anime I've been talking about lately that I watched. It's called Spice and Wolf. I don't doubt that it's already somewhere in the thread, but I really like how it does things so differently that most other anime. A wolf goddess who has been providing a village with good harvests for centuries sneaks aboard a traveling merchant's cart and makes a deal with him to take her back to her homeland in the north. The series is basically medieval/renaissance economics porn. All the action and plot devices and twists and turns are all about various intrigues related to making trades at a bargain, understanding currency exchanges, purposefully manipulating the price of a booming commodity, etc. It's really really fascinating. Naturally, it's still anime weird, but it's really good in a subtle way.
