  1. Forgive my ignorance, but what genre do you typically produce/listen to? Whatever the answer is, my suggestion is to listen to something else. Whether it be rock, rap, country, R&B (new and old), whatever, expand your musical boundaries to the point where you want to write those types of songs.

Listen to old R&B and pop songs and figure out how their structure is laid out, in a sense all modern music is based off of that time period. Basically anything that came out on Stax or Motown applies like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Stevie Wonder (this man released 5 brilliant albums in a row in 6 years, what a legend), Booker T & the MGs, Marvin Gaye, etc. as well as The Beatles, The Zombies, The Rolling Stones, and any other big name band that your parents listened to. A lot of modern music has some interesting arrangements as well, specifically the mathcore genre as well as a lot of other rock stuff and even some rap artists (Daedalus being a recent fav).

The whole point of this post is to say that there's not going to be a tutorial that will magically make everything better. There are definitely useful techniques but ultimately the best thing you can do is to listen to as much music as possible and experiment as much as possible.

Alright. I used to listen to a lot of electronica, whether it be OC ReMixes, The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Propellerheads. I listen, to Pop, Punk, Rock, Hard rock, Death metal, Metal, Nu Metal, Punk Rock, oldies rock. I listen to a little bit of everything. Depends on the mood I'm in which will have me choose what I'll listen to. I really have gotten into Deadmau5 and Morgan Page, DJ Dan.

I like House and Dance a lot. I was going to start doing what you said, when I get some time. Figuring out how songs work and such. Experimenting etc. Was going to start with some of Morgan pages laid back songs.

But starting with older music, would that be a better idea? I'd personally want to start with Morgan Pages Electropop Its fun, catchy. and then go into Deadmau5 later and some others.

But yeah, starting out with older music figuring out how they did what they did, you think that would be a better option? I ask because I don't think I'd be as into doing as much as I would with some house and dance music.

  2. So, as some of you guys may know. I haven't been entering compos much in the past few months. School will continue to hinder that, atleast until the summer. Something happened though, I got all into loving all this elctronic music. But I've always felt that everytime I asked for help, it only went so far.

I kinda just, gave up. Thats not me, I get pissed when I lose a game of Madden football. None the less give up at something.

What I have as far as equipment and software:

    Shitty midi keyboard

    FL Studio 9

Money to get new stuff - $0

I have a ton of great drum samples and some other odd ones. What I have noticed though. I don't like KORE Player at all. I can't stand it anymore.

I do use Harmless a synth plugin for FL Studio.

What I'm looking for is some guidance.

Where can I find some tutorials that will benefit me? Some helpful articles? When I say tutorials, I've done most of zircons and such.

    I just want to LEARN.

The main reason I quit compoing, is most of my tracks have no structure. I want to learn what makes a song a song. How to peice it together, time things. I failed to learn these things before.

I kinda know what makes a song a song, but when it comes to writing it in FL. There really is no structure when I try to compose.

So basicly I'm saying, where can I find good tutorials? Good Articles to read up on to help with whatever.

Anything that will help a noob. I've been around the community long enough. Time to stop dicking around.

  3. See my first post along with gibbo's response(s).

things are going fairly smoothly for me, as long as i keep motivated. I can comfortably curl 35s now (up from ~22lbs about 2 months ago) and pushups aren't a thing of death anymore (I think the weight loss helped with this...though i won't say i'm not getting a stronger chest, I know I would get better results with a bench)

are things progressing for you in that routine? and I only have a set of 20s and a jug of whey protein. And do you feel satisfied after your workouts? Thats my main problem. when I was in the gym. I left with a satisfied feeling, but at home its different.

  4. Hey, Halt is back again.

So I'm still a solid 120lb. Played some basketball last friday. I'm pretty out of shape.

I can't get into a gym, I use my high schools gym because my college doesn't have one, and I know the people that work it, so they let me in for free. Only problem is the schedules are so wonky I can't work around it and set a solid routine in.

What are my options? I've Talked to Lukas about this more then once.

Back then, my workouts didn't seem satisfying, I have a set of 20lbs dumbbells, and a jug of whey protein.

I guess I'll have to work from home. What can I do to get the best workout from home? (Maybe set up a routine too?)

  5. this happens after prolonged exposure to the brewers

Hey Man. I never even liked baseball. My dad will always hope that one day, the brewers might actually win a world series. As for me, I hope the sport dies.

Watching tennis is more fun then watching baseball.

  6. I miss listening to the OCAD crew, but the last like month and a half I've had no time, between college, NCIS, and stuff.

Forgive me, as I need to get back into the groove. [:

Why would I cry at the site of Roadkill? Roadkill is delicious, and it has already been tenderized by tires and grills.

My cat was roadkill you bastard. If I got to see him in roadkill form I probably would have cried :( I miss my cat.

  7. uTorrent confirmed.

I like that you can set it to shut down your computer once everything is completed, thus saving electricity.

But you don't seed when that happens.

But you also got all of the stuff you want.

I guess it's a fine balance between saving money and seeding. Choose wisely.

You know. We crunched the numbers in my last semester math class, about power consumption.

We used a 500w PSU. Now, we figured if you were pushing ALL 500 Watts for a month straight on 24/7, it would cost like a little over $20 a month. like 28 something if I remember correctly. So they don't use up THAT much electricity.

  8. What if one of the insiders (like DJP) who has direct access to the forums copies GrayLightning's subset of data out, then brute forces or de-encrypts it (whichever is easier). A password can tell you a lot about a person.

If that doesn't divulge much, then run a test of his password against all other accounts in the forums and see if it matches up with anyone else. Those matches could then be his other aliases.

Or a moderator could just delete this post cause I'm suggesting the data owner to potentially hack one or more of it's user's accounts. 8-O

Though desperate times call for desperate measures and we've all seen what larger companies have done per the requests of others... like GOOGLE.

So how about this... DJP I'm suing for you to run a test against GrayLightning's account! :-P

Now watch... everyone's gonna go change their passwords and someone's gonna try to brute force the forums from the outside and will make the servers go down... Hopefully no one is this stupid.

I'm going to point out, brute forcing is highly illegal. :\

  9. I couldn't help but post here...

...but not having known GrayLightning, I must say this makes almost everyone on this site look like a bunch of manic stalkers. Though I don't see how a group of over 100 people could manage to stalk someone without them noticing, hehe!

Well if you do find him, drag him back here and duct-tape him to his computer. We need moar mixes from him!

maniac stalkers? The guy was a friend, remixer, great musician, and all around great person. Its not common that a group of people would pursue him. He just up and vanished without a trace. Really makes you wonder, what the hell happened. Not having met him either I can't vouch for much. But its clear he was a big part of OCR.

Edit: oops, my bad. Manic, lol disregard kthx.

  10. I've had both cable and DSL here, and for me, it's always said I'm from Irvine, which is only 20 miles away... considering how vast North California is, it would it least narrow it down to a county/area.

I never thought about the possibility of him working in some sort of FBI/top secret kind of government position... but I imagine that it's a possibility. In that case, we'd probably have to settle with confirmation from family or friends that he is ok (lol, which sounds like a longer shot).

Yeah, I've had some say I live in new york. I live in wisconsin. But thats the point, you would be able to narrow it down since there are reliable trackers out there.

  11. Oh, right. For his old posts here, yeah...could even use the IP address to determine if he was honest about where he said he lived.

Yeah, only thing is. I know of like the have sites and shit you type an ip in, it tells you where it is. Some of those are off by a LONGSHOT. As long as you guys know his last known place of living on that ip it will prove if he was where he said he was.

  12. But having an IP address and an ISP means that we are able to potentially match it with anyone else who was a regular poster on OCR.

You should be able to trace the ip to where it was broadcasted from or whatever. and that would maybe give a better chance at slimming down possible family members, or have a general area where he might be.

  13. 9 is pissing me off. First I had trouble with the damn ASIO, now it's not giving me any MIDI playback no matter what I try. The only half-clue I can get is that whenever I change the port number, I get a FL error message saying "There is no driver installed on your system."

Here's what I got set on it right now.

    Capture0.jpg

Drives me nuts I have to do this every damn time. What am I doing wrong?

Only problem i have is win7 won't recognize my drivers for my keyboard. ASIO works great though.

  14. If you have a Mac with an Intel processor, it might be better to dual boot. I did it (it's fairly easy) and it's been working great. Parallel booting uses a TON of CPU and RAM so a lot of programs will lock up/not run unless you have a really powerful setup.

To dual boot, its best to have a good amount of space (30+ GB) left on your hard drive for Windows and all the programs/files you want to have. Dual booting basically splits (i.e. partitions) the hard drive into two separate drives, allowing you to (virtually) have two different computers (one Mac OS X, one Windows) in one machine.

EDIT- It might also be a driver issue. I can't get the microphone to work on the Windows side of my machine and I have the newest drivers from Apple.

Hes probably right, its most likely a driver issue. I doubt mac has drives for a windows OS. best bet is to get a headset and do it up, since its a mac mic, it has no drivers for windows :P
