Considering the genre and the mood, the prelude arpeggio running verbatim works pretty well for me. Right now, the intro synth is kind of annoying. Its attack is a bit annoyingly long at some parts. You do take care of that by keeping it legato for the later half of the intro. The sound reminds me of something of the early 1000s for OCRs - I don't know what it quite is, maybe that there's nothing really standing out? Even if you're going for a sort of minimalism, things can stand to be a bit louder - maybe try compression? I don't know. Cool though.

OCR01962 - Virtua Fighter 2 "Juunen Hayaindayou"
SoulinEther replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I epically hate you for remixing this while I had ideas brewing for it for the longest time. (alright, for only the VF1 version, but upon hearing this I have come to appreciate the VF2 version perhaps a little more). No, I don't hate you. I've been listening to this off and on for a while - downloaded it from the album that you released. I think it's emotive, and you've combined two themes into a very pleasant and (i hate the idea of calling it formulaic but) reliably predictable (in a good way, I swear) - in that it meets my expectations in terms of structure without seeming jarring or just sorta pieced together, with a verse-chorus approach. Wish the keys had more of a role during those synth lead moments, perhaps more counter-melody or embellishment to fill out the sound. Maybe I'm just going through a can't-have-enough-counterpoint phase - it'll pass. And the drums need to sound more epic. Like, 23.1% more epic. Lo, ye OCR listener: digest this music, not what I say...eth. -
Let's talk about OverClocked ReMix music videos.

I've had an idea for a modestly cheesy, self-centered music video surrounding Starman (Don't Lose Yourself) where a man is basically constantly walking toward the camera in various places, including outer space (it may include some floating flight..). The scene changes with every bass kick. -
Diablo 2 1.13 Patch possibly as soon as next week! Join us!
SoulinEther replied to Tensei's topic in General Discussion
Having played other games like Guild Wars, where builds can completely change between every PVP battle, the ability to respec isn't so bad - it should keep you from having to remake characters (especially if you get the one from the act bosses, which allegedly has unlimited uses), and it'll let you experiment with slightly-off-builds that you wouldn't waste your time on otherwise. But you can still get tppk'd, so idk. -
Diablo 2 1.13 Patch possibly as soon as next week! Join us!
SoulinEther replied to Tensei's topic in General Discussion
Alas, with these patch notes, of this I am forever certain: SC and WC3 are the only reasons why battle.net still exists. But... most people who have seriously played D2 have put up with the bullcrap for as long as they have and moved on. D3 is going to be enticing regardless of the quality of the D2 product available today. Regardless of D2's flaws, I still have fond memories of it, and that will certainly be a factor in my decision to grab D3 or not. Blizzard has dealt with Starcraft for even longer, though. If only D2 weren't so broken (in terms of bugs, mostly.. forget balance issues). Or as popular in certain markets. I'm not sure what their best move is, though I'm inclined to think that focusing on D3 is the better choice, whether or not it has a monthly fee. A $50 price tag in comparison to a monthly fee is like an impulse buy, and should grab lots of users. Or just forget everything but WoW. I'm sure they didn't fix anything in D2 so as to discourage people from playing it (encouraging WoW consumption instead). Bleh. -
Even though it might involve a crapload of work on your part... it would be nice to see some shots of the inside as well, even if just from above after removing the top.

you gotta solo this type of stuff... damn, every time I see this it makes me want to go out and buy an atom board and make my own case. ..except i don't need an Atom-based computer. lol.

Have you put anti-static sheets or metal inside?

Personal. Becoming more... knowledgeable and prolific with composition. Considering how I'm not quite far in either aspect, I have a long way to go.

dead beat is played on the Alucard path, which you can still get to after the clock tower It is a much longer and harder route, and Alucard isn't nearly as strong as Syfa, but it does have a few, imo, better tracks in the game. Your string lead (violin?) has a long attack, and when exposed as in the beginning sounds unconvincing. You can try to tweak it, or you should be able to find a better free sample. Cadenza or Campbell strings? Or, maybe more ideally, the squidfont pack has several samples of strings available - I haven't messed with it much yet but it might yield better results. And you've got quite a lot of reverb going on on that string. It would probably be less noticeable if the attack weren't so long. Concerning the writing.. try stuff, lol. Or think of an emotion or something you want to convey.

After "You'll never be that sure of me / So wipe away your tears and we can be", you build up a crapload of (great) energy then it sorta... wanes a bit... as you glitch the vocals instead of completing the line. It rebuilds soon though, and I will admit I really enjoy the following natural "like the stars above" with all the harmonies/counter melodies. And what's with that clashing note/chord in the beginning? It just seems so out of place, lol. I guess mine is just a small structural quibble but yeah. This stuff is catchy. Lyrics are really good quality - simple, with a nice charm. It's already pretty glitchy, I think.

OCR00854 - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon "Rude Awakening"
SoulinEther replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Rize is (at least now) definitely capable of better sound, especially with his drums. But this piece is not bad. It's (clearly) repetitive, and I'm not sure if the solo + ending is enough to redeem the whole piece, but this works if you really like the theme. It could be a lot more aggressive, in the sound and in the arrangement departments. Still, I won't deny that I can replay the whole song in my mind, lol. It's worth listening to, but your mileage may vary. -
OCR01927 - Castlevania "Vampire Snap"
SoulinEther replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Maybe it's the four on the floor but I find this piece much more accessible than the other remixes on the album. Instrumentation is diverse, fantastic, funktastic, interesting, and filled with surprises. Sounds like there's a vocoder in here somewhere. Dissonant tones here and there to boot. Original stuff and solos are interesting and emotional - 2:00 - 2:16 is awesome, then it ties back well to the theme. 3:15 is also the start of sweetness. If you've heard something else off of this album and you weren't too sure about it, definitely try this one out - it delivers. -
OCR01928 - Castlevania II "The Solace of the Daylight"
SoulinEther replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I really dig the organ intro, and the groove it leads into. In fact, I wish that organ would reappear... The first piano solo is neat, but my interest wanes as I wait for it to take a specific direction again, or to return to more of the daylight town theme. DA mentioned the melody repetition but I think it wasn't that bad - variation would have been nice, but it works for me. What doesn't work for me is, again, it goes off into a solo that seems so distant from the source. Overall, it's a bit repetitive, funky, soloy, but... the solos and original writing feel disconnected from the source, and kind of ramble. I have a hard time keeping this piece in the center of my attention as I listen to it. -
WIP - My first remix - Ico: Castle In The Mist

Yeah, I don't think it's a release but attack - timing. -
Seriously, it's ridiculous how time flies. Hell, I haven't even removed those links in my sig since last year.I'll try to do my part.

OCR00991 - Final Fantasy IV "Over and Under"
SoulinEther replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Found it. Yeah, I like this one better. Not sure about some of the vocal harmonies as a stylistic choice, but it's much more pleasant overall. The vocals at the ending could be stronger, too, though the performance overall is certainly more pleasant. Its arrangement is brilliant, however. Despite the fact that I've heard FFIV's main theme a billion and a half times, this piece keeps it from getting stale, and its more original sections mesh well with the source. I usually skipped over this track whenever I came to it - it's not bad, but it wasn't convincing enough for me. This new version is pretty tight, and I'll probably add it to my current playlist. -
WIP - My first remix - Ico: Castle In The Mist
SoulinEther replied to Brandon Goins's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
2:57, 3:01. The guitar is slightly late at the start of those measures, it seems. Maybe I've become overly sensitized to it since I noticed it, but I guess it's not really that significant. It just sounds kind of jerky? Like something is abruptly changing notes, or something... the downbeat is so accented that the odd timing is noticeable to me, I think. Maybe I'm crazy. Then again, I probably am whether or not you or anyone hears this, lol. -
Aren't those headphones the same as the MDR-V6? Just not labeled professional or whatever?

if you buy a shirt or hoodie, you get the decal/bumper sticker for free. just saying. lol.

WIP - My first remix - Ico: Castle In The Mist
SoulinEther replied to Brandon Goins's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I can't help but listen to it and get lost in that picture. Something about this seems a little odd. Like... at the start of some measures (especially notable after the strings cut at the end), there's an odd, abrupt timing/release of something. I'm noticing it on the 4th and 8th (and slightly on the 6th) measure of the ending, and I might have noticed it elsewhere, but I can't really put my finger on it so easily elsewhere. And I'm hearing that the original uses almost only hard plucks and stuff, but maybe you can squeeze more emotion out of more varied dynamics. I can hear either working, honestly, so that's totally your discretion. (edit: well, you do vary dynamics. not sure where i was coming from w/that) Really like that piano sample (that you made?) and the way it's incorporated here. It engages. really good stuff. if this is your first victim, i wouldn't mind if you kill em all. -
Oy, I thought I'd never forget about that. Trace of Rage + Albus that way = gah, and then the ending too. I don't know if I cried, but I was damn sure sad.
-
FFIV, just before the last fight. And then getting beat... and then repeating it three more times.. and then going back and leveling up more... and then actually beating it. But I only got a little teary-eyed the first time. The ending was nothing either.

the only peaceful game i can think of is like.. the sims. Introducing a new expansion pack to the hit title - The Sims 3: Legacy of Peace! ...it should (ironically) include a new neighborhood war mode. insert campy poster here. lalala.. peace just isn't as interesting. edit: why not rag on "darkness" while we're at it?
