  1. Cool stuff! Very conservative but very satisfying for fans of the theme nonetheless.
  2. This one is really fun, I like it a lot actually. Very clear melody and rhythm to follow and move to. There is one track made by someone in this community that just screamed out hip hop to me when I was blasting it from my speakers, even though I'm not sure that was his intention. That track is Diggi Dis's Schala mix on Chronotorious. Maybe not as applicable past the intro, but the first minute evokes everything I love about hip hop:
  3. How does one consciously decide to transition from electronica to hip hop without first understanding it from an emotional standpoint? We can break down J-Dilla and whoever on a technical level all we want, but I think we'll still miss what really makes a beat undeniably hip hop. Until you feel what Mos Def is saying in Respiration about hearing "the bass ride out like an ancient mating call...I can feel the city breathing, chest heaving, against the flesh of the evening, sigh before I die", you won't really 'get' hip hop. Hip hop will forever remain urban music; the music of the streets. To not understand this and go ahead trying to piece together a hip hop beat is folly. Your first track does actually sound like a hip hop beat. I can't say the same about the other two. I would say the first one comes closer largely due to the jazz elements and a beefier drum loop. It's a good start considering your previous influences, but to be honest you'll really have to eat, sleep, and LIVE hip hop before you can start making it.
  4. Well, this is obviously going to be on OCR eventually. Just wondering: why aren't you guys doing a collab track for the Sonic album? I feel like that soundtrack is right up chthonic's alley.
  5. This is still one of the strongest projects on the site and perhaps its most overlooked. It is superior in flow and consistency, one of the few projects that actually passes as a real ALBUM. It had a project director that knew exactly what he wanted and put it together. It would be sad if this is the last OCR album of its type. It seems like we're at the point of no return where projects are multi-disc mammoth collections emphasizing a wide variety of styles. Give me 10 proven artists united under a clear vision over 4-disc sets of disparate parts any day.
  6. Just watched all 8 for the first time. I think MK vs SF 2 and 3 are still the standard for these over-the-top DBZ-style animations, and I get the feeling they were a big influence for SMBZ. Really really good production values on this, except for the sometimes horrendous dialogue. Some love for AmIEvil in Episode 7!
  7. I am reminded of this post in the comments thread of mv's "Foray into Eastern Horizons"
  8. The sampling of Rakim's "pump up the volume" vocal was used by Scott Peeples on PheartheMonkey.
  9. I think this is the best work of both of these guys, and I've probably listened to each of chthonic's mixes like 20 times. no wonder the past two years haven't been quite as happy for me, the dude wasn't posting mixes! onward to more joyful days as I dance to this song!
  10. Classic Michael flash video from a few years back: http://www.hcn.zaq.ne.jp/cabic508/rsf/mq.swf
  11. Surprised that this is the site's first remix of Fighting of the Spirit. Congrats on the project release!
  12. Were you on shrooms when you made this? I wouldn't be surprised.
  13. Good luck with this one. Jay Chou is a semi-decent songwriter, but you have to sift through a lot of crap because he releases an album every freaking year. Other than him, contemporary Chinese music is largely disposable. I confess I am a huge Faye-natic, even though I get some condescending looks when I go through my list of favorite artists and she comes up. Sky and Restless are her two best albums. Much of the Chinese music industry is still stuck in pop, so you'll be hard pressed to find any good rock or experimental stuff.
  14. Many of his tracks feature rapping, and it's absolutely beautiful when it works. Also look into Cookin' Soul for some more inspiration. Hip hop production these days is more beat-oriented and goes away from its jazz roots, but you don't need to sacrifice melody for rhythm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aI0J3Vuy9Q
  15. I've been pondering lately just why nobody has tackled this soundtrack yet. When the fan translation was released, the first reaction from a lot of the gaming community was just how awesome the music was. I have had "Mom's Old Home" stuck in my head for weeks... Anyone willing to give it a shot? You'd be adored by the internet forever for having the first Mother 3 OCremix...
  16. This is unbelievable. I have a feeling this will be one of those overlooked remixes just because it comes from a little-known game. It is some of the most amazing musicianship to ever come from this site.
  17. Tough luck on the judges' decision, is there anyway the public can still hear this?
  18. I don't think the game is quite the landmark Earthbound was, but it's every bit as memorable and continues to resonate with me a week after finishing it. Games like this give me a little bit more hope for the future of gaming as an art form. Someone please please remix these amazing tunes!
  19. I remember first hearing this and thinking it was something I could appreciate musically, but not something I would be listening to years later. Well, I'm still bumping it to this day, and I practically rock out to all the crazy rhythms and tempo changes. This piece practically changed my whole perspective on music, and that is no hyperbole my friend.
  20. Woah, I was just listening to this 5 minutes ago when I see this on the front page. Nice! You've made two of the best Metroid mixes ever.
  21. Yes! Dark Side of Phobos was a good effort, but this one is more melodic, ambient, and just plain fun to listen to. It doesn't drag on at all, it's a lean and concise vision that harks back to Kong in Concert. Love the fact that Evil Horde takes the pivotal track 2 in both albums. Hangarmageddon was my favorite from Dark Side, and I see his inclusion here as sort of a way to spiritually link the two. Love what Jovette Rivera did, I loved his Voices of the Lifestream track and his track here is another pivotal one. Crushing Headache...wow, I think this is TO's magnum opus and my favorite piece of the album. Mazedude is simply clutch with his stuff and his stuff adds a lot to the cohesiveness, they transition very well with everything else. Pleasure to see Ailsean kicking ass once again, I was expecting a shred track but with Evil Horde's contributions, it would have been redundant; a shining arrangement from Ailsean. Red Waltz...we all know it's another pretzel classic, and the perfect closer to an album that I felt succeeded enormously in bringing the melodies out from the dark and sparse soundtrack.
